12 Shows Like The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox You Must See
Image
Created by K.J. Steinberg, Hulu’s ‘The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox’ is a crime-legal drama series that narrates the story of Amanda Knox (Grace Van Patten), a young American student in Italy who is wrongfully convicted for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher. What starts as a case of misunderstanding soon becomes a complex legal case that captures media attention. The story explores her trials and tribulations as she fights against Italy’s justice system to prove her innocence and achieve liberation. The narrative, based on a true story, highlights the themes of justice and human rights in a nuanced manner. Inspired in parts by Knox’s memoir ‘Waiting to Be Heard: A Memoir,’ it is a deep dive into the idea of justice. If you enjoyed watching the performances and the themes in the drama series, these shows, similar to ‘The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox,’ will intrigue you.

‘American Rust’ Canceled at Amazon After Streamer Rescued Show for Season 2
Image

It was originally slated to air on Freevee before it was shifted to Prime Video. All 10 episodes of the second season dropped on March 28.

The first season of the show was based on the Philipp Meyer novel of the same name. Season 2 of “American Rust” was officially titled “American Rust: Broken Justice.” Jeff Daniels led the series along with Maura Tierney, David Alvarez, Alex Neustaedter, Julie Mayorga, Mark Pellegrino, Rob Yang, and Kyle Beltran. Luna Lauren Velez, Marc Menchaca, Nick Sandow, Britian Seibert, Christopher Denham, Amelia Workman, Leon Addison Brown, and Sara Lindsey all joined the show in Season 2.

‘American Rust’ Canceled By Prime Video After Streamer Had Rescued Showtime Series
Image
American Rust has been canceled for a second time. Prime Video has opted not to renew the drama starring Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney for a third season, Deadline has confirmed. The news comes four months after Season 2, titled American Rust: Broken Justice, premiered on the platform and had a quiet run.

The cancellation was foreshadowed by the recent casting of Tierney as a new series regular on NBC’s Law & Order.

American Rust has a long history. It initially was ordered straight-to-series at USA Network in November 2017, but a few months later, the network opted not to move forward with it. At the time, sources said the order was contingent on the producers finding a big star for the lead, which didn’t happen. It then moved to Showtime, with Daniels attached to star and executive produce, where it was picked up and aired for one season. The...

Carla Gugino to Play ‘Gone With the Wind’ Star Vivien Leigh in Biopic ‘The Florist’ (Exclusive)
Image
Carla Gugino has been tapped to play Hollywood screen legend Vivien Leigh in the forthcoming biopic “The Florist.”

The film is directed by Nick Sandow (star of “Orange is the New Black”) and will explore Leigh’s struggle with bipolar disorder in the 1960s, as she prepares to lead the Broadway production of John Gielgud’s Chekhov adaptation of “Ivanov.” Screenwriter Jayce Bartok (“The Cake Eaters”) put the script together based on a box of love letters.

Leigh earned her place in cinema history as Scarlett O’Hara, the central character in 1939’s “Gone With the Wind,” opposite Clark Gable. Leigh also played the landmark role of Blanche DuBois opposite Marlon Brando in 1951’s “A Streetcar Named Desire.”

“I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to excavate a woman as complex, contradictory, and compelling as Vivien. From the moment I read the script, I knew ‘The Florist’ was a journey I had to pursue,...

Jeff Daniels Teases Widening Murder Conspiracy in ‘American Rust’ Season 2 Trailer
Image
Jeff Daniels as eternally glum police chief Del Harris returns for a widening murder conspiracy in the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice, which dropped Monday.

After the sudden, mysterious death of a former police officer in Pennsylvania’s rust belt in the rookie season is not quite solved by Harris, to say the least, the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice returns to the fictional town of Buell, where a compromised Del and Grace Poe (Maura Tierney) try to rebuild their lives.

That’s until the trailer reveals a series of unrelated murders that may add up to a much larger conspiracy closing in on a tight-knit town. “We never really do move on, do we?” Del questions at one point.

The fateful wrench from the first-season finale cover-up surfaces, as does Del fretting over how to protect the murder suspect and son of his sometimes girlfriend Grace.

Jeff Daniels Drama ‘American Rust’ Moves to Amazon for Season 2
Image
Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney drama American Rust is returning for its second season — on its third platform.

Amazon announced that the sophomore run — titled American Rust: Broken Justice — will premiere on its Prime Video platform rather than the previously announced ad-supported service Freevee. All 10 episodes of the season will debut in a binge drop on March 28.

The drama was originally developed for Showtime, which canceled the show after its first season aired. Freevee picked up American Rust for season 2 in June 2022, with the show now airing on the Amazon flagship service. With Amazon having formally added ads to its Prime Video platform, Freevee programming has been migrating to the larger Prime Video.

Season 2 follows Del Harris (Daniels) and Grace Poe (Tierney) as they try to rebuild their lives after the events of season 1. Season 2 picks up with a string of seemingly unrelated murders, hinting at a much larger conspiracy...

‘The Unheard’ Review (Shudder)
Image
Stars: Lachlan Watson, Michele Hicks, Bill Sage, Brendan Meyer, Boyana Balta, Nick Sandow, Shunori Ramanathan | Written by Michael and Shawn Rasmussen | Directed by Jeffrey A. Brown

Not a companion piece to Unseen, The Unheard is a new Shudder Original that combine the talents of Jeffrey A. Brown, who previously directed The Beach House and writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen whose credits include Crawl and The Ward. It’s the story of Chloe who caught meningitis and spent six months in a coma as a child. She awoke to find that she had lost her hearing.

More importantly, she had lost her mother as well. She disappeared without a trace during those months. She and her father moved to Maine and she’s tried to put it behind her and get on with her life.

Now a young woman she’s returned to Massachusetts and her family’s Wellfleet summer house...

The Unheard Review
Image
Plot: Chloe Grayden undergoes an experimental procedure to restore her hearing. So she begins to suffer from auditory hallucinations related to the vanishing of her mother.

Review: The Unheard is mostly a story of young Chloe getting her hearing back. But it’s a bit more complicated than that. The supernatural twist of her hearing her dead mother through white noise feels like an element we haven’t seen in a while (Michael Keaton’s White Noise anyone?). I was reminded a lot of the film Sound of Metal, since both deal with the process of trying to hear again. Obviously, they’re very different (this one has a lot more murder), but in broad strokes, there are many similarities. One aspect I absolutely loved was Chloe’s clear fear of putting in her earplugs at night. It’s almost like a “What if I never hear again?” moment that she goes through nightly.

Video Interview with The Unheard Director Jeffrey A. Brown
Image
Watching the cosmic, otherworldly dread unfold in Jeffrey A. Brown's The Beach House was one of my favorite viewing experiences of 2020, so I was thrilled to find out that Brown is back with his next feature-length film, The Unheard.

With the supernatural sci-fi horror film now streaming on Shudder, I caught up with Jeffrey in a new video interview to discuss working with the talented Lachlan Watson, his personal connection to the film's story of hearing loss, and how he brought the film's creepy VHS aesthetic to life on screen. As an added bonus for fans of The Beach House, Jeffrey also talks about what his pitch for The Beach House 2 would have looked like!

You can watch the video interview with Jeffrey below, and in case you missed it, read Cass Clarke's review of The Unheard!

The 23rd annual Boston Underground Film Festival took place at The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Ma from March 22 to March 26. The genre-blending lineup included premieres, festival favorites, anticipated titles, shorts, and more.

The Unheard

The festival’s opening night kicked off with the world premiere of The Unheard, which pairs the exciting New England talents of director Jeffrey A. Brown, following up his dynamic debut The Beach House, and writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, hot off the success of Alexandre Aja’s Crawl. All three were in attendance for a post-screening Q&a.

Hearing impaired since the age of 8 as a result of meningitis, 20-year-old Chloe Grayden undergoes an experimental gene editing procedure to restore her hearing, which coincides with a homecoming to prepare her family’s empty summer house for sale. She’s the first patient in the clinical trial to show positive results,...

Spoiler Alert: The following story contains details from the season finale of CBS and MGM Television’s Clarice.

On Thursday, Clarice came to the end of its first (and likely final) season, presenting resolution in the case of the Anacostia River murders, as well as signs of personal growth on the part of the titular FBI agent, and a couple of major deaths.

By the time finale, “Family Is Freedom” kicks off, ViCap has uncovered most of the dark secrets of Alastar Pharmaceuticals and its emotionally disturbed CEO, Nils Hagen (Peter McRobbie). Putting her career on the line to aid them in their investigation is Clarice’s fellow agent and best friend, Ardelia (Devyn A. Tyler), who is told by her boss to stay out of the matter, but refuses to do so.

Clarice Episode 13 Review: Family is Freedom
Rebecca Breeds
This Clarice review contains spoilers.

Clarice Episode 13

Clarice, episode 13, “Family is Freedom,” only closes some of the cliffhangers “Father Time” ended on. We still don’t know whether Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) will be reinstated into the ViCAP team, and we never find out what happened to young Clarice when her Sheriff father left her at the mercy of some pissed off criminals.

The last image we saw of that encounter, when Clarice ran it through her repressed memory bank, was a young Clarice with a gun held to her head as her father hangs his head in shame in the distance. The men who said they were cheated, and called Clarice’s dad a criminal and a coward, warned him he couldn’t hide behind his little girl. We never learn how that scenario plays out. How does she live through that incident to become the wild card federal cop she is today?...

Clarice Episode 12 Review: Father Time
Image
This Clarice review contains spoilers.

Clarice Episode 12

In Clarice episode 12, “Father Time,” Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) finally loses her shit and clocks someone, and the series is better off for it. The young agent who rose to the top of a media circus on her first serial killer case has been scrutinized, chastised, hypnotized, and downsized since returning to the field. She’s had to run amok straight into danger just to get a point across which will solve cases. Tonight, Clarice lashes out at everyone, packs her boxes, and runs until her legs give out. It provides the most satisfying episode the series has given so far.

Starling has even had enough of her chosen, as opposed to assigned, therapist. Dr. Renee Li (Grace Lynn Kung), is the very definition of calming. Just a few words from her mouth usually silence the lambs in Clarice’s head. But...

Jodie Foster in Le silence des agneaux (1991)
Clarice Heads for Cancellation as Paramount+ Deal Nixed
Jodie Foster in Le silence des agneaux (1991)
Clarice is poised to be silenced by CBS in the coming weeks.

The Silence of the Lambs prequel was initially set to move to Paramount+ following its low-rated CBS run, but now the series is in a more precarious position than before.

Deadline is reporting that talks between the streamer and co-producer MGM have fallen through, with neither side able to agree on a deal to keep the show alive.

The news is not that surprising. Clarice was reported to be in contention to move from Paramount+ alongside Evil and Seal Team, but when the streamer officially picked up the other two, Clarice was notably absent.

Moving a series from broadcast to streaming is not an easy business because it means that new deals have to be struck, and Deadline says that the license fee for the show was set to increase from the $1.2 million - $1.3 million fee on CBS...

Clarice: Cancelled Soon? Season Two on Paramount+ Looking Doubtful for CBS Series
Aasif Mandvi, Katja Herbers, and Mike Colter in Evil (2019)
It looks like Agent Starling will be turning in her badge. Last month, it looked like the Clarice TV show, was poised to move from the CBS network to the Paramount+ streaming service (along with Seal Team and Evil) for its second season. Now, Deadline reports it's looking more likely that the show will be cancelled instead.

Based on The Silence of the Lambs, the Clarice TV series stars Rebecca Breeds, Michael Cudlitz, Lucca de Oliveira, Kal Penn, Nick Sandow, Devyn Tyler, and Marnee Carpenter. The series is a deep dive into the untold personal story of FBI Agent Clarice Starling (Breeds) as she returns to the field in 1993, one year after the hunt for serial killer Buffalo Bill (Simon Northwood). Brilliant and vulnerable, Clarice’s bravery gives her an inner light that draws monsters and madmen to...

Clarice Episode 11 Review: Achilles Heel
Image
This Clarice review contains spoilers.

Clarice Episode 11

Clarice, episode 11, “Achilles Heel,” could almost be called the “I-told-you-so” episode. After half a season of knocking down Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) as a rogue, unreliable, dangerous or mentally unbalanced cop, almost every character who got screen time this season gets to say their version of “we should have listened to Clarice.” This bodes well for the investigation, but also for the psyches of her closest acquaintances.

In the last episode, Clarice decided Catherine Martin (Marnee Carpenter) had to face some consequences for her actions. The surviving victim of the serial killer Buffalo Bill took his mother hostage, not entirely intentionally, but functionally enough to warrant observation. Catherine’s mother, the Attorney General Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson), is incensed over the idea her daughter is being victimized by the system, especially since she gave strict orders to the agent she forced to go rogue,...

Clarice Episode 10 Review: Motherless Child
Image
This Clarice review contains spoilers.

Clarice Episode 10

Clarice, episode 10, “Motherless Child,” finally addresses the elephant in the room. Well, almost. The Silence of the Lambs spinoff is a series of almosts. Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) almost gets killed every episode, as well as nearly always coming to the edge of getting fired, sometimes twice in an installment.

Tonight, Clarice almost helps Catherine Martin (Marnee Carpenter), who almost kills Buffalo Bill’s mom, Lila Gumb (Maria Ricossa). She also almost helps Attorney General Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson), who nearly fires her for it. Ultimately, neither one gets what they want, while Starling gets to decide what they deserve. Lila, who never wanted anything to begin with except to be left alone, loses even that. With great power comes greater entitlement.

Clarice also almost derails Agent Ardelia Mapp (Devyn Tyler) in her fight for equal representation within the FBI. Adelia is...

‘Seal Team’, ‘Clarice’ Could Move to Paramount Plus From CBS
Image
“Seal Team” and “Clarice” could soon be on the move. Variety has learned from sources that there are plans taking shape to move the series off of CBS to the ViacomCBS streaming service Paramount Plus.

According to sources, the current plan would be to air a few episodes of the fifth season of “Seal Team” on CBS before moving it over to the streamer, though deals for this are still being worked out. The move would also likely mean a reduced episode count for the series, which ran for 22 episodes its first two seasons, then 20 in Season 3, and 16 in Season 4, with the Season 4 set to wrap up on May 26. “Clarice,” meanwhile would move to Paramount Plus for the entirety of its second season.

Reps for CBS and CBS Studios declined to comment.

Should the move to Paramount Plus take place, it would be the latest example of a broadcast network...

‘Seal Team’ & ‘Clarice’ To Move From CBS To Paramount+; Military Drama To Get Network Sendoff
Image
In what could be a glimpse of the future of a symbiotic relationship between broadcast networks and their streaming siblings, I hear two high-profile CBS drama series on the bubble, Seal Team, and Clarice, will be moving to Paramount+ next season.

The deals are still being finalized but I hear the David Boreanaz-starring military drama, which is wrapping its fourth season, will kick off its fifth season on CBS next fall and air its first several episodes — likely four — on the broadcast network before migrating to Paramount+. Freshman Clarice‘s second season will stream exclusively on Paramount+. Reps for the streamer and CBS Studios, which produces both series, declined comment.

Already seen with the moves of A.P. Bio from NBC to Peacock, Search Party from TBS to HBO Max and Younger from TV land to Paramount+, broadcast/basic cable series, owned or co-owned by the net’s parent company,...

Clarice Episode 9 Review: Silence is Purgatory
Image
This Clarice review contains spoilers.

Clarice Episode 9

Clarice episode 9, “Silence is Purgatory,” offers a taste of temporary hell by exploring the connections of the show’s past and getting blocked from forward movement. The team is finally looking into the links between the River Murders and Alastor Pharmaceuticals. The company’s drug Reprisol is responsible for multiple cases of babies born with birth defects, and their well-connected attorney Joe Hudland (Raoul Bhaneja) keeps someone on the payroll just to kill anyone who steps forward.

“Silence is Purgatory” opens in the midst of the pre-shoe-leather phase of the investigation. The ViCAP team is working in the basement, out of sight from the prying eyes of the Bureau. They can’t even see each other that well. Even several levels beneath the FBI offices, behind closed doors, the agents are apparently still too wary to turn on the overhead lights. It makes...

Clarice Episode 8 Review: Add-a-Bead
Image
This Clarice review contains spoilers.

Clarice Episode 8

Clarice episode 8, “Add-a-Bead,” mirrors the procedural with the psychological. Clarice (Rebecca Breeds) lets her emotions find a safe landing place as her ViCAP unit investigates the suicide of a medical student who jumped to her death.

The opening segments of Clarice episodes are very atmospheric and color the entire installment. The glass ball in the doctor’s office reflects deep memories, and Clarice reflexively responds. Dr. Renee Li (Grace Lynn Kung) is the psychiatrist the agent chose over all the doctors which were ordered by the agency, and it is because she speaks the same language.

The work, the work, it’s all about the work. Clarice just suffered post-traumatic stress in a job where trauma is a daily occurrence, take a day off. The hypnotist is very effective. Up until this point, Clarice would jump down the throat of anyone who so...

Joseph Siravo, the screen and Broadway actor best known for playing Tony Soprano's father on The Sopranos, has passed away. The actor reportedly died on Sunday after a long battle with cancer, and the news of his death was broken by Garry Pastore, one of Siravo's co-stars from The Sopranos, with an emotional Instagram post. "Rip my dear friend, who fought an incredible fight," Pastore's Instagram post reads. "I will miss you. See you on the other side."

Including some photos of Siravo from the show, a fan account for The Sopranos is also among many from fans paying tribute to the actor.

Actor Joseph Siravo — who played Tony Soprano’s father on The Sopranos and also appeared in films like Carlito’s Way and numerous Broadway shows — died Sunday, NJ.com reports. He was 64.

Siravo died after a battle with cancer, having been diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in 2017. He was later diagnosed with colon cancer and had part of his colon removed.

Although not necessarily a series regular, Siravo played a key role on The Sopranos, popping up as Tony’s father, Giovanni Frances “Johnny Boy” Soprano, in memorable flashback scenes scattered throughout the series.
