Mad Max is a Tubi Streaming Success for Mel Gibson
Image
Tubi viewers have been rediscovering one of the greatest dystopian sci-fi movies of all-time, sending Mel Gibson’s original Mad Max riding to success on the free streamer’s chart. The low-budget George Miller-directed movie that kicked off a 45-year franchise is finding a new audience once again, possibly boosted by the recent revival of the franchise with 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, and this year’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Although Mad Max has previously seen success on other streaming platforms, there is something about being able to pick a movie to watch for free that drives audiences to some films that appeared to have had their time to shine long ago. Mad Max’s position as a pioneer of the post-apocalyptic thriller genre that would continue to enthrall cinemagoers with tales of future horrors makes its story always relevant in our tumultuous and volatile world.

10 Harsh Realities Of Watching Mad Max's First Movie 45 Years Later
Image
The original Mad Max is a low-budget, cult classic masterpiece that spawned one of the best action franchises ever, but that doesn't mean it's without its flaws, and those issues are even easier to see 45 years later. In just five movies, Mad Max has become one of the most recognizable and beloved action franchises in film. Everything about it, from Mad Max's main villains to the apocalyptic world of Mad Max, is a tenant of popular culture at large. The juggernaut of action that Mad Max became is all due to the original film, but it's not without flaws.

I've seen every Mad Max movie a dozen times, and I have a lot of love for the original film. There's no overstating just what it did for action as a genre and movies as a whole, especially Australian cinema. Truly, the first Mad Max was a miracle, from its...

10 Amazing Movies That Only Had a Tiny Budget
Image
Since the American film industry's founding, Hollywood has consistently proven itself to be the face of American creativity, fame, and prosperity, with everything from classic dramas to modern superhero films. While audiences today are used to blockbusters being made on hundred-million-dollar budgets, some even needing to earn billions to be profitable, that isn't always the case. A variety of cult classics and even box office mega-hits were made on a shoestring budget.

Hollywood has seen many directors come and go who have shown how to make do with less, with the limitations of small budgets sometimes forcing innovation and creativity. Many of these films redefined their genre, pushing the industry in a new direction for years to come -- despite being made for next to nothing. Not every filmmaker can replicate this success, but those who manage it show a good movie doesn't need a nine-figure sum to be iconic.

Why Mel Gibson's Beloved 1979 Apocalyptic Movie Poorly Showcases Biker Gang & Violence Explained By Expert
Image
Former Hells Angel Pat Matter criticizes Mad Max for its unrealistic portrayal of biker gangs, giving the scene a 2/10 for realism. The film's setting in a dystopian future justifies the gang's behavior, unique to other media reviewed by Matter. Mad Max's exaggerated depiction fits its post-apocalyptic world, and is still highly acclaimed by critics and audiences.

The original Mad Max movie provides a poor depiction of biker gangs and violence, according to a former Hells Angel. Released in 1979, the first film in George Miller's Mad Max franchise introduced Mel Gibson as the titular Mad Max Rockatansky, a police officer turned vigilante who sets out to stop a violent motorcycle gang. Other than Gibson in the lead role, the cast also includes Joanne Samuel, Hugh Keays-Byrne (who later played Immortan Joe in Fury Road), Steve Bisley, Tim Burns, and Roger Ward.

In a video from Insider, a former Hells Angels chapter president,...

How Many Lines Max Has In Each Mad Max Movie
Image
Max Rockatansky rarely speaks throughout the Mad Max franchise, and he's gotten quieter in recent years. Director George Miller believes minimal dialogue helps audiences focus on action, and Max's quiet nature helps with that. Max has never had more than 90 lines of dialogue in any of the five Mad Max films.

Though he appeared in five separate Mad Max movies, Max Rockatansky didn't actually have many lines of dialogue. Over the franchise's 45-year history, several different actors have played Max Rockatansky. Each of them, from the main stars to stunt doubles and voice actors, have added something unique to the character, but they all share something in common. Even Mel Gibson and Tom Hardy have been very quiet during their time as Max, mainly because Max has so few lines of dialogue over the course of five films.

George Miller, the director of all five movies in the Mad Max franchise,...

Screambox Hidden Gems: 5 Movies to Stream This Week Including ‘Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary’
Image
The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.

Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary

If bustin’ makes you feel good, Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary should be at the top of your queue. Imagine Sam Raimi remaking Ghostbusters from a Kevin Williamson script, and you have a pretty good idea of what this Brazilian horror-comedy is like: gory, self-aware, irreverent, and wildly entertaining.

When a local high school summons Bloody Mary, the Ghoulbusters — a team of local YouTubers with a cheesy ghost hunting show — are called in to take out the vengeful spirit. In addition to possessing people to the point of cranial combustion, the ghost exploits the high school setting by haunting inanimate objects,...

‘The Red Shoes: Next Step’ (2023) Ending Explained & Movie Summary: What Happens To Samantha?
Image
The movie, The Red Shoes: Next Step, revolves around the life of a young girl, Samantha Cavanaugh, who is an extremely gifted ballet dancer. Her world comes crashing down when she loses her role model, her elder sister, Annie, to a road accident in New York. She never wanted to fit into her sister’s shoes within the academy, but she did want to follow her as a role model. The film is full of anticipation of something good coming Sam’s way, even after a huge loss. The movie reeks of passion, enthusiasm, and motivation that would help real-life artists relate to the character.

We might mistake the film for a remake of the movie The Red Shoes (1948), but the two stories are completely different. While the old movie depicts a turmoil between romance and career, The Red Shoes: Next Step is the story of the struggle for fulfillment...

Where Was The Original Mad Max Filmed? All Filming Locations Explained
Image
Mad Max is one of the most influential action movies in film history, and director George Miller and his team seized the state of Victoria, Australia, to make Mad Max truly memorable. Back in 1979, George Miller made his feature-length directorial debut with Mad Max, a dystopian action film that introduced the audience to Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson), an officer of the Main Force Patrol (Mfp). Mad Max’s success made way for a movie saga, with two sequels, a reboot, and a spin-off focused on the character Imperator Furiosa, simply titled Furiosa.

Mad Max took the audience to a dystopian Australia facing a breakdown of civil order due to widespread oil shortages and ecocide. When a motorbike gang led by Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne) arrives to create chaos by vandalizing property, stealing fuel, and terrorizing the residents, Max and company do what they can to stop them. However, when it gets personal,...

Mad Max Movies In Order (How to Watch the Film Series)
Image
The Mad Max movie franchise, first created by George Miller and Byron Kennedy in 1979 with the initial movie of the same name, became a media sensation. The film series is set in post-apocalyptic Australia and follows the titular character Max Rockatansky (portrayed by Mel Gibson in 3 films) into action-packed adventures.

Later on, Tom Hardy took over as Max for 2015’s fourth installment – “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

The series chronicles the thrilling escapades of Rockatansky, a police officer in a dystopian Australia facing social disintegration due to war and depleting resources. Grief-stricken and enraged by the biker gang’s murder of his wife and child, Max embarks on a quest for vengeance.

As Australia rapidly plunges into barbarity with each passing day, he finds himself assisting small pockets of civilization – initially driven by self-interest but eventually out of compassion. Alone in the Wasteland, Max is determined to make that responsible pay for their heinous deed.

‘It definitely raises tension’: How ‘The Red Shoes’ weathered the Sydney lockdown
Image
Filming coming-of-age dance feature The Red Shoes: Next Step was an exercise in thinking on your feet, according to producers.

Directors Joanne Samuel and Jesse A’hern began production on June 15, just prior to the beginning of restrictions that would lead them to reschedule daily timelines, change locations, reduce film crew, become subject to regular police visits, and even switch an entire dance group.

Despite these challenges, wrap date was only delayed a week, with filming finalised on July 23.

Executive producer Tanya Esposito, who also produces alongside A’hern, told If they were glad to be able to finish shooting before further restrictions were put in place.

“We finished just before the second group of LGAs was locked down, so it’s really tight now,” she said.

“It was a nightmare to shoot in as it was, and I probably wouldn’t recommend it at the moment unless you are in a locked-in studio location.

When Gracie, ‘The Red Shoes’ principal, is injured, Sam is pressed by her ballet teacher Ms Harlow to take over the role and dance with Ben, an old friend, long-time crush, and renowned dancer.

Mad Max (1979)
Image
The true breakdown of society appears to have begun in Australia around 1979, when George Miller made this berserk extrapolation of every toxic futurist prediction on the books. Out on the open road the only thing saving society from horrifying motorized gang violence is a corps of equally crazed patrolmen in their interceptor vehicles. With this picture Mel Gibson went from zero to ninety on the star-meters, even though U.S. distribution fell to the failing American International Pictures. Kino gathers up the best existing extras, and includes audio mixes in two separate languages — incomprehensible Australian and marginally understandable Australian. With the non-stop action on screen, who cares?

Bo Report: ‘The Personal History of David Copperfield’ wins in crowded weekend
Image
‘The Personal History of David Copperfield.’

The floodgates opened last weekend with more than a dozen new releases led by The Personal History of David Copperfield, plus several re-issues as more cinemas turned the lights back on.

However the grosses per title reflect the “new normal,” with limited seating capacity and reduced sessions.

The safe distancing rules mean there is a cap of 20 people per session in Victoria, between 20 per cent and 45 per cent in New South Wales and 50 per cent in South Australia.

The top 20 titles racked up nearly $2.5 million, up 251 per cent on the previous frame, according to Numero.

Released by Roadshow, Armando Ianucci’s The Personal History of David Copperfield, a re-imagination of the Charles Dickens novel starring Dev Patel, Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi and Ben Whishaw, rang up $330,000 on 203 screens and $376,000 including previews.

Australian Fantasy Family Film 'The Legend of the Five' Official Trailer
Nicholas Andrianakos, Gabi Sproule, Leigh Joel Scott, Lauren Esposito, Lola Bennett, and Deborah An in The Legend of the Five (2020)
"Do you really think that five children would stand against the end of the world?" FilmInk in Australia has debuted an official trailer for an Australian fantasy adventure family film titled The Legend of the Five, marking the feature directorial debut of actress Joanne Samuel (she played Jessie in the original Mad Max movie!). This looks very much like a fun-for-all-ages kind of fantasy story, campiness and all. When a group of misfit teenagers encounter an ancient relic during a school trip to a museum, they find themselves caught up in a magical world, with elemental powers beyond their belief, and the responsibility of stopping an age old evil from destroying the world. The movie stars Lauren Esposito, Gabi Sproule, Leigh Joel Scott, Nicholas Andrianakos, Deborah An, Beth Champion, and Tiriel Mora. This seems like it's straight out of the 90s, but that may be a good thing considering the...

Damion Hunter epitomises the struggles of the journeyman actor
Damion Hunter in ‘Last Ark.’

For every actor who works consistently and achieves varying degrees of success in the screen industry, there are many more, like Damion Hunter.

Since graduating from Waapa in 1995 and Nida in 1998, the Indigenous actor has appeared in episodes of numerous series including Harrow, Redfern Now, Supernova, Farscape and All Saints as well as the miniseries Devil’s Dust and movies Wyrmwood and Around the Block.

Not enough, however, to sustain a viable career, so he retrained as a high school teacher in 2012 after working as a teacher’s aide in 2009.

He now teaches English and history at a college near his home in the Northern Rivers of Nsw and he has a sideline as a hip hop artist, but he has not abandoned acting.

His latest role is in Michael Joy’s movie Smoke Between Trees, which stars Tiriel Mora as Mathew Higgins, a middle-class...

Michael Joy addresses Indigenous identity in drama ‘Smoke Between Trees’
Elly Chatfield in ‘Smoke Between Trees’

Filmmaker Michael Joy knew he had to tread carefully when he embarked on Smoke Between Trees, a drama involving an Indigenous woman, her grandson and the boy’s grandfather.

As a non-Indigenous man he wanted to ensure the film would ring true for Indigenous people as well as relating to audiences generally.

So he consulted closely with Indigenous actors Elly Chatfield in her first lead role, Damion Hunter and numerous Indigenous Elders.

The producer/director/Dop/co-writer showed the film to a group of Elders with some trepidation and was both relieved and delighted when they gave thumbs up.

Tiriel Mora plays Mathew Higgins, a middle-class whitefella who is consumed with grief and anger. When his estranged 10-year-old grandson Ari (newcomer Robert-Joseph Slockee) re-enters his life, he has the chance for reconciliation.

Artist Elly Chatfield, a Gamillaroi woman from North-West Nsw, is Francine, the boy’s maternal grandmother.

First Trailer for Cheesy 'E.T. Meets Pixar' Kids Movie 'My Pet Dinosaur'
Making friends is easy, keeping them is impossible... What in the heck is this? A trailer has debuted for an Australian kids adventure movie titled My Pet Dinosaur, which is literally being pitched as "E.T. meets Pixar". The story is about a boy who befriends a dinosaur, that is actually a creation of a military experiment gone wrong. But as they grow closer, he does his best to keep him safe and prevent it from being captured. Seems more like The Iron Giant than Pixar. Starring Jordan Dulieu, Annabel Wolfe, Christopher Gabardi, Tiriel Mora, Harrison Saunders, David Roberts, and Joanne Samuel. This is made by a VFX supervisor, so he knows how to make it all seem realistic, but that doesn't make up for the cheesiness. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Matt Drummond's My Pet Dinosaur, originally from THR: Short description: A troubled town is plunged...

The Black and Chrome Version of Mad Max: Fury Road Is Coming in December!
The long awaited black and chrome version of George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road finally has a release date. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing the Mad Max: Fury Road Black & Chrome Edition on December 6th in a two-film collection that also includes the theatrical version of the film. It will also include a special introduction by Miller describing his vision for the film. I'm excited about watching this version of the film because Miller says it's the best version of it. When previously talking about his black and white vision of the film, he said:

"One thing I’ve noticed is that the default position for everyone is to de-saturate post-apocalyptic movies. There’s only two ways to go, make them black and white — the best version of this movie is black and white, but people reserve that for art movies now. The...

'Mad Max' (1980) Movie Review
Set in the near future, Mad Max portrays a dystopia on the brink of total collapse. Biker gangs do as they please and the "Halls of Justice" are quite literally crumbling. Yet, small pockets of a peaceful society still exist. People still go to restaurants and nightclubs and an attempt at order, of a sort, is maintained by the Main Force Patrol (Mfp), though the line between good and bad is slowly beginning to blur. Working with a tiny budget, director and co-writer George Miller uses the open road as his visual effect, bringing the action as close to the asphalt as we can get. Tires screech and eyes bug out of their head as a story of a society on the verge of being overrun by savages evolves into a story of revenge as the film's title character slowly earns his nickname. With a mixture of chaos, soon-to-be memorable moments of iconography and comedy,...

‘Mad Max’ is the beginning of the end of the world
Mad Max

Written by James McCausland and George Miller

Directed by George Miller

Australia, 1979

Somewhere in Australia are the first signs of the beginning of the end, the end of civilization as most people in the Western understand it, that is. While cities and towns still seem to exist, the institutions that govern them and protect society appear cracked and on the brink of disaster, such as the ‘’Halls of Justice’’ where highway patrol man Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) is employed defend the public from the insane biker gangs led by the one they call Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne). Together with partner Jim ‘’Goose’’ (Steve Bisley), Max is forced to reckon with savagery and brutality on the open road. Although equipped with his powerful Ford Falcon, Max still fears what is to come, or what might happen to him, his wife Jessie (Joanne Samuel) and young son. He represents the law,...

Blu-ray Review: Mad Max (Collector’s Edition)
Just in time for the release of Fury Road comes Scream Factory’s stellar Mad Max Collector’s Edition Blu-ray of the 1979 original revenge actioner that introduced most of the world to both Australian cinema and a young, rising star, Mel Gibson. Its influences are still being felt over 35 years later and it’s undoubtedly one of the best introductory films from a then-untested George Miller, who proved that even back then, he had an amazing eye for creating fluid action sequences.

Mad Max was Miller and co-writer James McCausland’s response to the growing global concern for a lack of oil after an embargo out of the Middle East in the early 1970’s sent much of the general public into a panic once fuel supplies began running low and prices sky-rocketed everywhere. Realizing the potential for violence under these circumstances, both Miller and McCausland dreamed up a dystopic future...

For the completeists out there, you also get both the original Australian English audio and the Us English bubbed audio.

I'm reading that the transfer is different than the last MGM Blu-ray release, but not necessarily better. But keeping in mind the low-budget, exploitation nature of the original film I don't think there's a "perfect" transfer to be had that w [Continued ...]...

'Fifty Shades of Grey', 'Selma', 'Lost River' and More on DVD & Blu-ray This Week
Fifty Shades of Grey This Blu-ray arrived only a few hours ago and as I type this my wife took it and is currently giving it a rewatch, all despite the fact she didn't even like it. I don't know what to tell you, but such is the way of the world. Personally, I did not enjoy this movie one bit, but I will always recognize Dakota Johnson as she saved all kinds of face and gave a solid performance in a junk movie. However, I should note this one doesn't actually arrive until Friday, so you're going to have to hold out just a little longer. That is unless you want to just buy the streaming version and own it now.

Selma Sean already reviewed the Selma Blu-ray for you (read that here) and gave it high marks, both for the film and for a solid set of bonus features.

'Mad Max': 25 Things You Didn't Know About the Mel Gibson Classic
"It's that rat circus out there, I'm beginning to enjoy it. Look, any longer out on that road and I'm one of them, a terminal psychotic, except that I've got this bronze badge that says that I'm one of the good guys."

And so we were introduced to the ticking time bomb of fury that is Mel Gibson, at least on screen, in "Mad Max."

Released 35 years ago this week (on April 12, 1979), George Miller's film about a near-future cop who turns vigilante when a biker gang kills his partner and his family, made an international star out of Gibson, made Miller an A-list director, and helped put the new wave of Australian cinema on the world map. It also launched a franchise that continues to this day; next year, Miller will finally release the long-gestating "Mad Max: Fury Road," with Tom Hardy taking over as Max.

While the original...

The Mad Max Trilogy Blu-ray Collection Arrives June 4th
Mel Gibson in Mad Max (1979)
Mad Max, the sci-fi franchise that introduced Mel Gibson to the world, will come together for the first time as a Blu-ray collection when Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (Wbhe) debuts The Mad Max Trilogy on June 4th.

The three films - Mad Max (1979), Mad Max Road Warrior (1982) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) - are all set in the near-future in Australia. From the very first film, Oscar winner George Miller (Happy Feet, 2006) proved a master at creating the gritty, bleak dystopian world and staging the incredible car stunts and crashes in the era when stuntmen, not computers, achieved the effects. All three movies starred Mel Gibson, virtually unknown until after the second film, as Max Rockatansky, a highway cop traveling through the Outback in a society descending into chaos. The films started Gibson on his road to international superstardom, led to his signature Lethal Weapon series, and later two Academy...

Two Mad Max Movies Set to Shoot in January 2012
Mel Gibson in Mad Max (1979)
Writer / director George Miller (Happy Feet 2) claims that he'll be starting production on the long awaited the Mad Max sequels this January. He's planning to shoot not one, but two back-to-back movies which have been titled, Mad Max: Fury Road and Mad Max: Furiosa. Today, Australia's Daily Telegraph got an update from Miller himself.

"We've built the vehicles. We've designed the movie. The principal cast is locked in. The film is funded. It has been for 18 months now. It's all ready to go. We just wait."

The delay in production is due to the unpredictable rain has temporarily ruined the desert environment of the Australian outback.

"The week we were to start, it rained the heaviest it had in 10 years. I'll never forget the first day -- we were holed up in a big sort of shed watching the rain. We couldn't shoot. If you want the rain to come,...

[DVD Review] Mad Max
Just as talking about the second most important thing to ever happen in Pearl Harbor seems kind of irrelevant, watching the original Mad Max after you’ve seen The Road Warrior can’t help but seem a little underwhelming. It’s not that the film is bad, or even not enjoyable, but it’s hard to come up with an aspect of story, character, or just plain cinematic gusto that Max accomplishes in a way that in any way compares to Warrior. Watching it, however, does enrich the experience of Warrior, serving as an effective (and more human) prologue that allows you to better know (as well as feel) just why Max is so Mad in the first place.

The Australia of the future is a right-wing dystopian nightmare: motorcycle gangs ran rampant across the countryside, terrorizing innocent people, and law enforcement is more or less powerless to stop them,...
