Born and raised in Detroit, son of Soupy Sales and Barbara Fox.

First band: "Tony Sales and the Tigers", with brother Hunt Sales playing drums. Carol Kaye taught him how to play the bass guitar (Carol has done session work for many artists, including The Monkees and Sonny & Cher). While a member of the Stooges, Tony was in a car crash (hit a tree while going 75 mph), which resulted in an 8-month coma.

While Tony was playing bass for band Tin Machine, lead guitarist Reeves Gabrels couldn't tell the difference between Hunt Sales and Tony Sales.

Tony first met David Bowie during Iggy Pop's "TV Eye" tour in 1977. Bowie was playing keyboards.
