Among the many genres in film, gangster movies often produce terrific stories and electrifying drama on screen that has stayed with fans. Within the variety of gangster films that present narratives of crime, violence, wealth and interpersonal relationships, each movie captures viewers’ attention based on how well-constructed the production came to be. As essential to cinema as any other genre, the gangster movie also resonates with audiences due to the analyzation of darker subject matter and how effective the characters are when displayed in a vulnerable or cinematic light.
Given the sheer number of acclaimed gangster films throughout history, many of these riveting narratives have often come from the literary landscape. Depending on the story at hand, whether showcasing criminals from different historical eras, recounting true stories or a sweeping fictional tale, many gangster films work off of adapting rich source material that gives the building blocks in making a well-executed gangster movie.

Ángel Salazar, who played Chi Chi in “Scarface,” died Aug. 11, his representative Roger Paul confirmed to Variety. He was 68.
Salazar played Tony Montana’s (Al Pacino) henchman in the 1983 cult classic, where he joins the drug lord in trying to reach the pinnacle of Miami’s cocaine scene. Chi Chi saves Tony in the famous chainsaw scene, where he’s almost killed by rival gang leader Hector (Al Israel).
Toward the end of the film, Chi Chi tries to fend off foe Alejandro Sosa’s (Paul Shenar) hit men to protect Tony, using a submachine gun to hold them back. Once he runs out of ammo, he bangs on Tony’s office door, begging to be let in before he’s killed by the attackers. He’s the last of Tony’s crew to be killed, leaving the kingpin all alone.

The question of “who authored this movie?” has rarely, if ever, come up in our essays about Brian De Palma, and any response to it is less an answer than communicating received wisdom — intelligently and passionately, but as received wisdom all the same. Let’s state this upfront: Redacted is a Brian De Palma movie in more than onscreen credit.

Growing up in the '80s, Scarface was always one of those films I watched when I was younger because of the violence and Al Pacino's over-the-top, yet mesmerizing, portrayal of the title character and my enjoyment of it continues to this day. I notice a bit more than I did then, but the point of emphasis remains.
Of course, those were the days of VHS and I remember back in 2003 when Universal finally reissued Scarface on DVD for its 20th anniversary as eBay had been swarmed with bootlegged copies for years selling anywhere from $50-100. I know because I almost bought a copy on several occasions.
Eight years later and not only do fans of this '80s gangster classic no longer have to spend upwards of $100 on a cheap DVD bootleg, but you can spend $35 on a pristine high-definition Blu-ray edition that also includes the DVD edition of...
