Kishore Sahu was a prominent Indian actor, film director, screenwriter, and producer, born in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh. He began his acting career with the film Jeevan Prabhat and appeared in 29 films between 1937 and 1982.
As a director, he helmed 20 films from 1942 to 1974 and wrote for seven films between 1954 and 1977. His directorial debut, Kunwara Baap (1942), won the BFJA Award for Best Indian Film in 1943. Among his notable works is Nadiya Ke Paar (1948), starring Dilip Kumar and Kamini Kaushal, which became the sixth highest-grossing film of that year. His film Les plumes du paon (1954) was nominated for the Grand Prize at the Festival international de Cannes (1952).Kishore Sahu served as the President of the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA) from 1955 to 1956.
Sahu pursued his higher education at the University of Nagpur, where he became actively involved in the Indian independence movement during his student years. He graduated in 1937. His father held the position of Prime Minister in the court of the Raja of Rajnandgaon. Sahu was married to Preeti Sahu, and the couple had four children: Vimal, Naina, Mamta, and Rohit. He was also the father of Bollywood actor Vikram Sahu. His brother, Vijay Sahu, was a notable figure in his own right.
He received a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Director for Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai (1960), starring Meena Kumari. His film Raja is considered a landmark in cinematic art, while Veer Kunal was a major box office success. He also earned critical acclaim for Sawan Aya Re (1949), known for its innovative storytelling.
