- He and his wife were poles apart in their political support, so they agreed to differ. As a result, each election the windows on the left side of their home in west London, England were adorned with "Vote Labour" posters and the right hand side with "Vote Conservative".
- Best known as the chairman of the music hall in the long-running TV series "The Good Old Days" (1953 -83). His relish in enunciating complex, polysyllabic introductions to the various acts was much imitated; he had begun doing this in small London theatres in the 1930s.
