These fields bring a sense of solace, an escapism for people. It’s unfair to make them a victim of politics. Art bridges distances and should be allowed to do so,” he said.

These Moments in ‘The Crown’ Season 5 Seem Beyond Belief — but Are They?
Image
“The Crown” is back — and so is the Netflix series’ accompanying drama about what is and is not factually accurate. This season feels particularly explosive, as the first batch of episodes to take place in the oh-so-well-documented 1990s. Among the many topics tackled are the dissolution of marriages, the discovery of the remains of the Tsar of Russia and his family, the election of Tony Blair — and Prince Philip’s obsession with carriage driving.

In order to sift through what is historically accurate and what is merely conjecture (if not outright dramatic fiction), we turn to the Internet’s favorite arbiter of fact versus fantasy: Jonathan Frakes, the host of late ’90s meme-fave “Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction.” Are these “um, what?!?” moments true? Or is Peter Morgan just pulling the crown over our eyes?

Did Prince Charles really cut short his second honeymoon with Diana and their children?

Although...

"The Crown" Season 5 Introduces Princess Diana's Last Boyfriend, Dodi Fayed
Image
In season five of "The Crown," which premiered on Netflix on Nov. 9, Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) has her first romantic relationships since separating from Prince Charles (Dominic West). Diana dates Dr. Hasnat Khan (Humayun Saeed), though their romance ends in 1997. Diana's next - and final - boyfriend is also introduced over the course of the season's 10 episodes: Dodi Fayed, played by Khalid Abdalla. Ahead, we're breaking down who Dodi was and the role he played in Diana's life.

Who Is Dodi Fayed?

Dodi was the eldest son of Mohamed Al-Fayed and was born in Alexandria in 1955. Episode three of season five, titled "Mou Mou," focuses on Mohamed's life story. Mohamed was a businessman, and, as the show portrays him, he was intent on working his way into the upper crust of British society. He and his brothers had a successful shipping company. In 1979, he bought the Ritz Hotel in Paris.

‘The Crown’ Season 5 Review: Netflix’s Royal Drama Returns in Reliably Fine Form
Image
Click here to read the full article.

When Prime Minister John Major (Jonny Lee Miller) carefully suggests in the fifth season premiere of Netflix’s The Crown that the British royal family might consider paying for repairs to their aging yacht out of their own coffers, rather than asking taxpayers to foot the bill, Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) pushes back with a personal appeal. “When I came to the throne, all my palaces were inherited. Windsor, Balmoral, Sandringham — they all bear the stamp of my predecessors,” she tells him. “Only Britannia have I truly been able to make my own.”

It’s a striking statement, in a number of ways. For one, the very phrase “all my palaces” invokes levels of privilege unthinkable to most. For another, it suggests the Queen herself struggles within a system designed to protect her role at the cost of her individuality. And if...

The Crown Season 5 Review: Bad Times For The Old Royals
Image
'Even the televisions are metaphors in this place," says Queen Elizabeth II when her ancient TV suddenly goes on the fritz, its screen fuzzy and fading. It's a cheeky, winking little line from the writers of "The Crown" as the series enters an era of decline for the royal family. Things are falling apart left and right, including people's bodies, as the characters age into health problems and general malaise. It was a stroke of genius to frequently recast the characters of "The Crown" as they age because it hammers home the inevitable passage of time; the sense that the clock is always ticking, and sooner or later, it's going to run out for everyone.

As usual, "The Crown" follows Elizabeth and her immediate family as they deal with the ever-changing times. I've long felt "The Crown" is the spiritual successor to "Mad Men" (though not nearly as good as...

Image
Variety can exclusively reveal the first look of Dr. Hasnat Khan, played by prominent Pakistani star Humayun Saeed, in Season 5 of hit Netflix series “The Crown.”

British-Pakistani doctor Hasnat Khan was a heart surgeon at London’s Royal Brompton Hospital, where he first met Princess Diana in 1995. Diana struck up a friendship with him, depicted in “The Crown” as taking place while she was visiting a friend whose husband was undergoing surgery with Khan.

Khan’s 2004 statement to the Metropolitan Police, which was submitted in 2008 to an inquest into Princess Diana’s death, stated that he was in a relationship with her from 1995-1997 and that she broke up with him after she met Dodi Fayed at a holiday with Mohamed Al Fayed and his family.

Dodi Fayed and Princess Diana died together in a road accident in Paris in 1997.

Saeed told Variety: “Dr. Hasnat Khan and Princess Diana were total opposites.

Elizabeth Debicki in The Crown (2016)
The Royals And Politicians Of ‘The Crown’ And The Actors Who Play Them
Elizabeth Debicki in The Crown (2016)
Netflix’s The Crown, poised to drop Season 5 on November 6, is irrefutable proof of America’s continuing fascination with England’s royal family. The series opens with Elizabeth’s wedding to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947 and Season 4 wraps with the resignation of longtime Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Along the way, the series, created and principally written by Peter Morgan, delivers all the insider drama and palace intrigue one would expect in a drama about the royals. The series is produced for Netflix by Left Bank Pictures and Sony Pictures Television.

Reinforcing its popularity, after the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, the show’s first two seasons bounced back into Netflix’s Top 10 shows, according to the streaming service.

Season 5 will introduce a host of new actors in the principal roles. Imelda Staunton will play Queen Elizabeth II, following in...
