Alain Guiraudie’s “Misericordia,” Carlos Marqués-Marcet “They Will be Dust” and Yeo Siew Hua’s “Stranger Eyes” all won big at Spain’s auteurist haven Valladolid Film Festival on Saturday, in a second edition under José Luis Cienfuegos whose prizes served as a vindication of the changes he has wrought at the festival as well as an indication of some ways European arthouse is going.

All three directors’ awards build on prior upbeat reception. Playing Cannes Premiere, “Misericordia,” which scooped Valladolid’s best picture Golden Spike and its screenplay trophy, was hailed by Variety as a “darkly comic backwoods fable of pansexual desire and small-town sociopathy” which marks a “welcome re-embrace of the streamlined murdery perversities of his terrific ‘Stranger by the Lake.'”

The 2024 edition of the Valladolid International Film Week, also known as Seminci, wrapped on Saturday (October 26), giving its top award, the Golden Spike, to Misericordia by Alain Guiraudie.

Misericordia tells the story of a man who returns to his hometown for the funeral of his former boss, the village baker, and decides to stay for a few days with the man’s widow, getting involved in a series of unexpected events.

Guiraudie also won the best screenplay award.

Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud’s Berlinale Panorama premiere Sex has landed further theatrical deals for M-Appeal across Europe.

Deals have now been closed in Germany (Alamode), Austria (Polyfilm), Benelux (September Film Distribution), Spain (Filmin) and Italy (Wanted Cinema).

Sex follows two men, played by Jan Gunnar Røise and Thorbjørn Harr, both in heterosexual marriages, who have an unexpected experience that challenges them to reconsider their understanding of sexuality, gender and identity.

It is produced by Yngve Sæther and Hege Hauff Hvattum for Norway’s Motlys, and is the first in a planned trilogy, with Dreams and Love to follow.

“Making a film called ‘Sex’ calls for all sorts of jokes and misunderstandings during production, everything from being summoned to a ‘sex-meeting’ to emails being censored because someone had written ‘sex-props’ in the subject field,” he tells Variety ahead of the trailer premiere.

“As for the screenplay, there aren’t that many jokes about sex in it. Some awkward humor, yes. But the main point has been about trying to show the short span between ecstatic pleasure and shame. Blue Fox Entertainment has revealed an official US trailer for a made-for-kids spirited holiday movie called Teddy's Christmas. This Norwegian movie first opened in Norway last year around this same time, and it has been dubbed into English for release in US theaters this fall. Christmas peace falls over a small town in Norway, but at the Christmas market there's hectic activity. Mariann discovers a teddy bear at the top shelf. Mariann wants to win the Teddy, but someone else does. But Teddy feels a connection with her and the two end up on an adventure together to reconnect in this remarkable & heartwarming Christmas story. Featuring Zachary Levi as the English voice of Teddy, with a cast including Marte Klerck-Nilssen, Jan Gunnar Røise, Nader Khademi, & Mariann Hole. There's not much to this trailer, strangely quite short.

Exclusive: Capelight Pictures said Tuesday that it is partnering with Blue Fox Entertainment to present Fantefilm’s Norwegian family Christmas feature Teddy’s Christmas in U.S. theaters nationwide on December 1, 2023.

The film stars Zachary Levi (Shazam!) as the voice of the animated title character, Teddy, in the English-dubbed version of Andrea Eckerbom’s hit Norwegian CGI-live action hybrid. Marte Klerck-Nilssen, Jan Gunnar Røise (The Thing), Nader Khademi (Countrymen) and Mariann Hole (Made in Oslo) also are in the voice cast.

The holiday story, which centers on an 8-year-old girl who pursues an adventurous living teddy bear, mixes live-action and CGI animation. While visiting a Christmas market, Mariann suddenly sees an unbelievable sight: on the top shelf of a carnival game booth, the most adorable stuffed teddy bear has just moved his head and sneezed. Feeling an instant connection, Mariann can’t think of any better Christmas wish than to win him as a prize.

A dozen years have gone by since the release of director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch the prequel Here). Looking back at the project now, van Heijningen has some regrets over the way the special effects were handled on the film, and that he was never able to make the sequel they had plans for.

Norwegian comedy series Power Play has won Best Series in the Canneseries International Competition.

The series — originally called Makta and written by Silje Storstein, Kristin Grue and Johan Fasting — is for Norwegian pubcaster Nrk and Ndr and is from Motlys and Fremantle-owned Novemberfilm. REinvent International Sales has distribution rights.

Fasting is the showrunner and Kathrine Thorborg Johansen, Jan Gunnar Røise star.

Power Play is billed as “the incredible story of Gro Harlem Brundtland, who in the late 70s works as a young doctor, fighting for self-determined abortion, when she almost by accident, stumbles into politics. As the government implodes around her, Gro learns to play her own games of power, climbing the ranks until she is the last woman standing in the ruins of Labour’s celebrated social democracy, ending up as Norway’s first female Prime Minister in 1981.”

Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer (below) for “Power Play,” which world premieres in the main competition section at next month’s series festival Canneseries. The fiction series is a raucous satire inspired by the real-life goings on behind the scenes when politician Gro Harlem Brundtland came to power in Norway in 1981. The power struggles and backroom bickering in the show bring to mind “Veep” and “In the Loop.”

Brundtland was the first female prime minister of any Nordic country, not just Norway, and one of Scandinavia’s leading figures in the fight for women’s rights, gender equality and abortion rights, with a standing on a par with Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Gloria Steinem in the U.S., or Simone Veil in France.

Acclaimed Norwegian helmer Dag Johan Haugerud (“Beware of Children”) has attached actors Thorbjørn Harr as well as Jan Gunnar Røise for the title roles in “Sex,” one of three pics with “Dream” and “Love” that form part of a trilogy about sexuality, longing and transgression.

The project is being produced by Yngve Sæther and Hege Hauff Hvattum for Motlys, in association with Viaplay and the local theatrical distributor Arthaus.

“Sex Dreams Love” will be pitched as a works in progress at the forthcoming Göteborg Film Festival’s parallel Nordic Film Market, which runs Feb. 2-5.

Harr and Røise earned respectively a Norwegian Amanda film award for best supporting actor and best actor for Haugerud’s “Beware of Children,” which snagged a 2020 Dragon Award for best Nordic film at Göteborg.

In “Sex,” set to start shooting this spring, the actors play two colleagues who in different ways are struggling with their sexuality.
