‘Jason Goes to Hell’ & ‘Jason X’ 4K Review – Evil Gets an Upgrade in Flawed But Fascinating ‘Friday the 13th’ Sequels
Image
Horror fans can be a fickle bunch, especially when it comes to nostalgic franchises. We don’t want the same story regurgitated with new characters, but straying too far from the established formula risks losing what drew fans to the property in the first place.

After churning out eight Friday the 13th movies with little deviation over the course of nine years, Paramount sold the rights to Jason Voorhees to New Line Cinema. “The House that Freddy Built” teamed with original Friday the 13th director/producer Sean S. Cunningham to revive the slasher icon with 1993’s Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday — which sidelines Jason, does not show Hell, and is not the final Friday.

The film kicks off with one of the franchise’s best prologues, condensing all the slasher tropes into a single sequence that subverts expectations by culminating in Jason being blown to smithereens by a Swat team.

From Season 3 Might Have Debunked A Big Theory About How To Escape The Town
Image
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for From season 3, episode 10, "Revelations: Chapter Two."

A possible solution to escaping From's town might have been debunked in the season 3 finale. Even before the Matthews family became trapped in the first episode, many of From's characters have searched for a way to escape the Town. Abby Stevens (Lisa Ryder) tried shooting and killing all the residents, as she believed they were in a dream and this was the only way to wake them up. Sara Myers (Avery Konrad) heard voices that promised escape if she killed certain individuals.

Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) actually did escape the Town after being pushed out of the lighthouse during From season 2's ending, although she ended up trapped again in season 3. Dale (Cliff Saunders) tried to escape by going through the faraway bottle tree, but this ended up with Dale getting stuck and dying inside the wall of the Town's pool.

Image
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for From season 3, episode 8, "Thresholds."From season 3, episode 8, "Thresholds" features major reveals that answer several long-running mysteries. As expected, the episode largely revolves around the fallout of Fatima (Pegah Ghafoori) killing Tillie (Deborah Grover) at the end of From season 3, episode 7. However, this is not the only storyline that moves significantly forward, as Victor Kavanaugh (Scott McCord) makes a breakthrough discovery about his memories with Christopher (Thom Payne) and the ventriloquist doll, Jasper, that has far-reaching implications.

Meanwhile, the mystery of Elgin (Nathan D. Simmons) and the skeletal kimono woman he has been seeing receives some much-needed clarity, and is confirmed to be intertwined with what has been happening to Fatima. An even longer mystery of who threw the rope down to Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau) in the season 2 premiere is also answered in an unexpected and game-changing way. These developments make "Thresholds" one of...

From Has Now Completely Ignored A Huge Part Of Boyd's Original Story For 2 Seasons
Image
From's Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau) experiencing Parkinson's disease symptoms was a significant part of his season 1 story, but it has been overlooked in From seasons 2 and 3. As defined by the World Health Organization, "Parkinson's disease is a brain condition that causes problems with movement, mental health, sleep, pain and other health issues." Common Parkinson's disease symptoms include involuntary movements and tremors known as dyskinesias. The severity of symptoms varies between individuals, but cognitive impairment can also occur.

Back to the Future actor Michael J. Fox is one of the most well-known individuals who have Parkinson's disease, with his diagnosis being publicly shared in 1991. He went on to create the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, which is a non-profit organization that funds scientific research to find a cure. There are medicines that can help control symptoms, but a cure has yet to be discovered. As From's cast of characters face new challenges,...

What The Heck Just Happened: One Of Jason Voorhees Iconic Kills In Infamous Friday The 13th Sequel Gets Glowing Review From VFX Artists
Image
This article contains descriptions of graphic onscreen violence.

Corridor Crew VFX artists break down Jason Voorhees' iconic liquid nitrogen kill in the infamous 2002 sequel, Jason X. The 10th installment in the Friday the 13th franchise pictures Jason in a futuristic world. Having been frozen in 2008, he is later discovered in the year 2455 and taken to space. Directed by Jim Isaac and written by Todd Farmer, the infamous sci-fi slasher film stars Kane Hodder reprising the role of hockey mask-wearing serial killer Jason Voorhees for the fourth and final time along with Lexa Doig, Lisa Ryder, and Chuck Campbell.

Sam Gorski, Niko Pueringer, and Wren Weichmano of The Corridor Crew were blown away by the special effects used in Jason's liquid nitrogen kill, where he pushes a girl's face into liquid nitrogen, it freezes, then he smashes it on a counter. They suspect that the film either utilized "a morph" or...

What Happened To Tom In From & Why His Ghost Appears To Jade
Image
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for From season 3, episode 6.

Tom (Reid Price) is the latest From character to appear in the series after his death. Father Khatri (Shaun Majumder) and Abby Stevens (Lisa Ryder) are among the dead From characters who have intermittently reappeared before Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau) and others since they lost their lives. While death is a very real threat in the Town, the dead have a way of coming back to haunt, manipulate, or to give advice to those still fighting to survive in the bleakest of conditions.

Jade (David Alpay) has experienced hallucinations of dead individuals since he first arrived in the Town in season 1, although the hallucinations usually feature people he does not know, including American Civil War soldiers, or the mysterious symbol he is still attempting to decipher. This time is different when he sees the Town's deceased bartender and his friend, Tom.

10 Horror Movies That Expertly Switch Genres
Image
Horror movies often get the short end of the stick. Many moviegoers overlook the genre, writing it off as always being predictable, too graphic, or too reliant on shock value horror. Horror, however, has versatility that is hard to come by. The genre plays with almost any theme it wants, as long as the result is terrifying. Horror is the perfect breeding ground for social commentary and dissection of real-world issues. The genre is also ideal for mixing into other genres as well.

Some of the best horror movies ever made aren't just horror. More often than not, horror melds brilliantly with other genres. Think of some of the most infamous horror films out there. Alien (1979) and The Thing (1982) are two titles every movie enjoyer knows, but they aren't just horror, they're also sci-fi. Many great horror films are successful because they take advantage of blending genres.

10 Horror Movie Sequels That Subverted Their Own Franchise
Image
The horror genre has long been one of the most dynamic corners of cinema, turning in a slew of creative ideas that receive more sequels than any other genre. Naturally, with so many of these movies following the same old formula with each new entry, some directors have made a point of switching things up. Perhaps more than any other genre, horror audiences have grown accustomed to sequels that offer a stark departure from established lore, whether through new settings or entirely new characters.

Unfortunately, while horror is a place where creators have the freedom to experiment, fans aren't always receptive to these new ideas -- and they often have a good point. Simply subverting a franchise's core idea doesn't always make for a good story, but it can make for an interesting shift. These movies aren't perfect, but they deserve respect for challenging the expectations of moviegoers, even if they don't stick the landing.

From Season 3 Star Reveals 1 Storyline That Still Confuses Him
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for From season 3, episode 4!From star Harold Perrineau has revealed the one ongoing storyline for Boyd in season 3 that still confuses him about its purpose. Throughout From season 3, Boyd has been targeted by the creatures in the town, who tormented him by killing Tian-Chen (Elizabeth Moy) in front of him in the premiere episode. In season 3, episode 4, they forced him to abandon Randall (A.J. Simmons), who was tortured and left outside the Colony House at the end of the episode. However, this isn't the only storyline the town's Sheriff has been dealing with.

Speaking with Radio Times, Perrineau revealed he still doesn't know the purpose behind Boyd speaking to an imaginary Father Khatri (Shaun Majumder) throughout From season 3. The actor explained creator John Griffin could probably answer the question, also commenting on how he used to see his wife, Abby (Lisa Ryder), who hasn't appeared since season...

What Happened To Boyds Wife Abby In From
Image
Three seasons in, From viewers are still wondering what happened to Abby Stevens (Lisa Ryder), the late wife of the Township's self-appointed sheriff, Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau). Although Abby isn't currently one of the members of From's cast of characters, her presence lingers both figuratively and literally. Created by John Griffin, MGM+'s sci-fi horror TV series centers on a mysterious town that traps all who enter. To make matters worse, the unwilling inhabitants of the town are hunted by From's monsters at night. Luckily, the Township has found a great leader in Boyd, a former Marine.

Like the rest of the townspeople, Boyd, Abby, and their son, Ellis (Corteon Moore), were on a road trip when they encountered a tree blocking their path. After turning around, the trio found themselves in From's strange town. With nightfall approaching, the Stevens family joined a few other residents in an underground shelter to wait out the night.

From Is a Horror Series That's Actually About Purgatory
Image
Season 3 of the captivating sci-fi horror TV series From premiered on MGM+ on September 22, 2024, expanding the action from the mysterious middle of American Township to a hospital in Camden, Maine. As Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) learns how far she has traveled from her home, questions swirl around the strange hellish landscape the characters navigate after being trapped.

As Tabitha's husband, Jim (Eion Bailey), continues to search for her whereabouts outside of Township with Mayor Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau), the clearer the mysterious neighborhood functions as a purgatorial allegory for lost souls trapped in between heaven and hell, with their spirits stuck in a horrifying limbo full of ghoulish monsters and nightmarish creatures of unknown origin. The real question becomes whether the show's creators intentionally planned to make Township a metaphor for the afterlife.

Harold Perrineau Breaks Down Harrowing Scene in “From” Season 3 Premiere [Interview]
Image
The third season of MGM+’s propulsive horror series “From“ has arrived, with the first episode ending on the series’ most intense scenes yet.

Last season, Boyd (Harold Perrineau) managed to kill one of the humanoid creatures in the woods, unleashing a metaphorical Pandora’s Box of terror in the process. While the season ended with that particular nightmare resolved, at least for the moment, it feels safe to say that the monsters are rather angry.

That builds to one of the most sinister confrontations with the creatures yet in the third season premiere…

Spoilers Ahead: The episode ends with Tian-Chen (Elizabeth Moy) triumphantly assisting Boyd in rescuing the escaped livestock, only to realize they’ve walked into a trap. The creatures bind Boyd to a support beam in the barn, forcing him to watch as they torture one of the town’s kindest souls.

What makes the scene so...

Jason X (2001) – Awfully Good Horror Movies
Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Betsy Palmer, and Jeannine Taylor in Vendredi 13 (1980)
It’s time for a new episode of the Awfully Good Horror Movies video series, and in this one we’re looking back at one of the least popular installments in my beloved Friday the 13th franchise. That’s the tenth entry, Jason X (watch it Here), also known as “the one where Jason goes to space”. To hear all about it, check out the video embedded above!

Directed by Jim Isaac from a screenplay written by Todd Farmer (and some uncredited rewriters), Jason X has the following synopsis: The year is 2455. The Place is Old Earth. Once the shimmering blue jewel of the galaxy, Old Earth is now a contaminated planet abandoned for centuries. Yet humans have returned to the deadly place that they once fled. Not to live, but to research the ancient rusting artifacts of the bygone civilizations that caused this environmental disaster. And little does the...

Why Jason X Is a Perfect Friday the 13th Sequel
Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Betsy Palmer, and Jeannine Taylor in Vendredi 13 (1980)
This article contains Jason X spoilers

Anyone watching a Friday the 13th movie today comes to the classic slasher franchise with more than a few expectations. They want to see Jason Voorhees, of course, complete with his hockey mask and machete. But they likely also want to see some intellectually-challenged teens (played by people in their late 20s and early 30s) get torn apart by a lumbering monster they could never hope to stop.

It may surprise some Friday neophytes to learn that as formulaic as the series may be, not every entry contains all of those expected elements. Not only is Jason not in Part I (save for a closing stinger) and Part V, but he doesn’t get the hockey mask until midway through Part III and isn’t an undead killing machine until Part VI. Simply put, the idea of Jason in the public consciousness is usually...

X Marks The Spot For Jason Voorhees
15 years ago, evil got an upgrade…In Space!

Eight years after Jason Voorhees went to the hell of middling box office returns, New Line Cinema (who snatched up the rights to the character after Paramount squandered the Friday the 13th property into a tired series of faceless slasher sequels) launched their psychotic goalie into that far, far away galaxy where franchises like Critters and Leprechaun had already gone to die — In Space!!! The last-second climax of Jason Goes To Hell promised an ultimate fighting showdown between New Line’s other favorite son, Freddy Krueger, but the studio had to put that dream on hold while Wes Craven completed his final statement with New Nightmare. Desperate to keep his franchise alive while the promise of Freddy Vs. Jason tried to free itself from the muck of development hell, original creator Sean S. Cunningham passed the producing credits down to his son Noel, and...

Lou Taylor Pucci and Seth Green Talk The Story of Luke

The dramatic comedy The Story of Luke shows us a character we rarely see in modern cinema: a young autistic man who wants to forge his own path through life, instead of being dependent on others. Lou Taylor Pucci stars as Luke, a 25 year old autistic man who has lived a sheltered life with his grandparents, after his mother abandoned him. When his grandmother dies, Luke decides he wants to get a job and fend for himself for the first time in his life.

I recently had the chance to speak with Lou Taylor Pucci and Seth Green, who plays Luke's socially inept boss Zack, over the phone about this fantastic indie, debuting in theaters April 5. Here's what they had to say.

Lou, can you talk about the things you did to bring this character to life? Did you speak with autistic people,...

Friday The 13th: Body counts, boobies and bloody good quotes
Well, it’s been seven years since Jason Voorhees chopped up foolish teens exclusively. Sure he shared screen time with Freddy Krueger in 2003’s crossover Freddy Vs Jason, yes he accumulated quite the body count in the film, yes it was a lot of fun, and yes the film was pretty damn successful, but diehard fans such as myself certainly missed that special “alone time” with Mr. Voorhees. Now Jason is back, solely stealing the spotlight and the lives of reckless youngins, and despite a mostly negative critical response and dismal box office staying power, he's still one massive murdering machine.

Over the last 29 years Jason has claimed more victims than even imaginable. From random teens, to strange drifters, to diner employees, Jason has eliminated just about everyone to (unluckily) grace the big screen with the masked menace. As a result of Voorhees’ obnoxious kill rate, fans have pondered the...
