Opening on Friday, Nobody 2 currently holds a strong 90% approval rating from those who have ventured out to cinemas to see the John Wick-esque thriller. This may be a little lower than the 94% achieved by its predecessor in 2021, but it proves that once again Odenkirk is able to please his fans and action lovers everywhere.

Four years after the first Nobody film emerged as a sleeper hit at the box office, Universal has debuted a sequel. Nobody 2opened to mostly positive reviews this week, as it aims to outperform the original in its first weekend. The movie brings back Bob Odenkirk as a secret assassin who was reactivated in the first film after his family was threatened by a crime lord. The first Nobody earned positive reviews as well, and went on to gross $57 million at the worldwide box office, against a reported budget of $16 million. What made its performance all the more impressive was that it debuted in peak-pandemic 2021.

A new action movie with heavy ties to the John Wick franchise is performing well on Rotten Tomatoes. The John Wick movies star Keanu Reeves in the title role as a retired assassin whose revenge mission after the murder of his dog takes him on a violent and grandiose adventure.

The franchise has so far lasted for four movies with various feature-length and episodic spinoffs. John Wick Director David Leitch also co-founded the company 87North productions (with Kelly McCormick), which largely focuses on ushering other Wick-esque productions to the screen.

The 87North roster includes the Christmas action-comedy Violent Night, the Brad Pitt actioner Bullet Train, the Mary Elizabeth Winstead-led Netflix movie Kate, the stunt-heavy Ryan Gosling movie The Fall Guy, and a new movie that has just earned a solid Rotten Tomatoes score.

Nobody 2 Has Won Over Critics

Ilya Naishuller's "Nobody" exists in this tug of war between a "John Wick"-inspired bone breaker and a dark satire about an emasculated suburban dad who salivates at the thought of satiating his dormant bloodlust. It's a fun enough beat-em-up, with Bob Odenkirk giving more to Hutch Mansell than what's on the page. Even in its lulls, you can tell the "Better Call Saul" star really worked with the 87North stunt team to bring a level of physicality to his bloody brawls. With the 2021 film garnering mostly positive reviews and earning a decent success at the box office, it seemed all but inevitable that a sequel would be underway. Now that they've established that Hutch's family is well aware of their patriarch's deadly skills, it stands to reason that the next film would play on that.

Regular readers of mine and other reviewers are undoubtedly familiar with the complaint about “sequel drop-off.” Follow-ups trying to cash in on the popularity of the first rarely match the magic. In fact, that phenomenon is so common that disappointing scions usually get more of a sigh of resignation than outrage. The latter is saved for lame remakes and re-boots. The superfluous re-creations of The Bishop’S Wife and Mr. And Mrs. Smith come readily to mind as particularly odious. This one’s thankfully at the opposite end of the spectrum. Ain’t no drop-off to be found in Nobody 2.

I loved Nobody notably because of its surprise factor. Hutch (Bob Odenkirk) appears to be an ordinary suburban nebbish whose life is drab, drab, drab. Dull job; cookie-cutter cul-de-sac. An UNfunny Rodney Dangerfield on the respect scale.

Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad actor Bob Odenkirk says he is content with not returning to the iconic role. Odenkirk played Saul Goodman, the sleazy lawyer for Walter White (Bryan Cranston) through three and a half seasons, and then reprised the role for six seasons in the highly acclaimedBetter Call Saul.

Make no mistake, 2021’s sleeper hit, Nobody existed to count how many ways we could see its star Bob Odenkirk beat up bad guys. It instantly turned the Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul star into an action hero of sorts, a sort of Liam Neeson spinoff with a touch of John Wick. Key to it working was the genuine humor and “Everyman” aspect of this guy, Hutch, whose itchy trigger finger is set off right from the start as low life burglars invade his house, and then battles bigger foes with the Russian mob. His family including wife Becca (Connie Nielsen), son Brady (Gage Munroe) and younger daughter Sammy (Paisley Cadorath) knew nothing of his secret life.

Bob Odenkirk began his career in comedy, first making his mark as a writer for Saturday Night Live from 1987 to 1991 before he went on to write and perform in The Ben Stiller Show (1992), earning Emmys for both. Imagine National Lampoon’s Vacation crossed with First Blood and you have some idea of the delirious action comedy that is Nobody 2. This sequel to the 2021 surprise hit brings back the suburban family you’ve come to know and love, and like many a loving clan, they’ve got their share of problems. In particular, Hutch (Bob Odenkirk) and wife Becca (Connie Nielsen) are drifting apart, mainly because he’s working all the time to pay off their debts, and kids Brady (Gage Munroe) and Sammy (Paisley Cadorath) feel neglected.

Odenkirk stars as Hutch, a suburban dad and master assassin who’s like John Wick with a 401(k) and sensible shoes. The Better Call Saul star developed the character with screenwriter Derek Kolstad, based partially on his own experiences with an armed intruder breaking into his house. He told The Hollywood Reporter the secret to the success of his unlikely action hero.

We're still three days away from the release of Nobody 2, but early reactions to the action thriller sequel have given us a little insight into whether Bob Odenkirk's unlikely hero is still a hit with fans. Released in 2021, Nobody starred Odenkirk as Hutch Mansell, a former government assassin-turned office worker who reluctantly returns to his old life after becoming the target of a Russian crime lord. Grossing $57.5 million at the box office, the sequel was announced in 2022, and since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of Odenkirk's everyman hero.

It appears as if the wait was worth it, as reactions to Nobody 2 on social media have praised the sequel and director Timo Tjahjanto for delivering even more "bone-cracking action." As critic Bill Bria puts it:

The 67-year-old actress posed for pics with Roan, 25, Laird, 20, and Quinn, 19, at the event on Monday night (August 11) in Los Angeles. Roan is on the left in the pink suit, Laird is in the grey suit, and Quinn is on the right, wearing the pinstripe suit!

2021 was a very bizarre year for the movie business. The box office was on straight-up life support after the 2020 shutdowns brought on by the pandemic. At San Diego Comic-Con, Bob Odenkirk sat down with IGN to talk about his upcoming movie Nobody 2. During their chat, he shared some pretty wild and funny thoughts about which childhood TV and movie characters he would want to fight, and who he wouldn’t dare touch.

Odenkirk didn’t hold back. About The Brady Bunch, he said, “I would happily kill them, they don’t even have to do anything. Not the littlest girl I wouldn’t hurt, it’s not her fault she’s a Brady.” So, the youngest Brady is off limits, but the rest?

Not so much. Then he went after Alvin and the Chipmunks, saying he’d “step on them and crush them under my foot. You have to hear the bones and the gush inside their body, you’re gonna cheer.” That’s a pretty brutal mental image.

Bob Odenkirk is about to take a second stab at action stardom with Nobody 2, and if he has his way, it won't be the last time he plays Hutch Mansell. The Better Call Saul star wants to do multiple entries in the action franchise. He discussed it during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, hosted by Collider's Steve Weintraub.

While Hutch has tried to leave his days as a government-sponsored murder machine behind him, Odenkirk has plenty of ideas about getting him back into action while balancing his life with his family, and the film's balance of fantasy and reality:

"I somewhat boldly state that I think there could be four. I have ideas about where the character goes. The core sort of issue, which is, can you maintain, how can you live a civilized life, a family life, and then vent your worst rages on the world?...
