Don Ryan was born in Ohio. He attended West Virginia University. Don served as an officer in World World I and moved to Los Angeles around 1920. His work as a columnist for two local newspapers inspired his first of four books, "Angel's Flight"(1927), now considered to be one of the first modern "Los Angeles" novels. He also began writing titles and scripts for films. In 1932 he and his wife Bobbie were listed in the Los Angeles phone directory as living at 6152 Glen Tower in Hollywood's Beachwood Canyon.
