Yvonne Russo directs Onyx Collective’s four-part docuseries “Vow of Silence: The Assassination of Annie Mae,” premiering Nov. 26 on Hulu. The series shines a light on one of the most infamous and mysterious crimes in Indian Country. It will also serve as a quest for truth, while placing Annie Mae’s story within the broader context of the American Indian Movement, examining the Movement’s rise to prominence and its efforts to advocate for Indigenous communities. The 25th Woodstock Film Festival will feature a lineup of world, North American and U.S. premieres, joining acclaimed fiction and nonfiction films from Sean Baker, Steve McQueen, Alexis Bloom, Raoul Peck, Marielle Heller, Jesse Eisenberg, Jacques Audiard and many more.

The festival, which runs from October 15-20 in the Hudson Valley towns of Woodstock, Rosendale, Kingston and Saugerties, will see writer-director Paul Schrader receive the Honorary Maverick Award. His latest, Oh, Canada, starring Richard Gere, Uma Thurman and Jacob Elordi, will screen at Woodstock. As Participant Closes, 60 Stars and Directors Sign Open Letter for Hollywood to Keep ‘Harnessing the Power of Art to Change the World’

Dozens of top Hollywood creatives and activists have signed an open letter in response to the shuttering of production company Participant — imploring the industry to continue to effect change through film and television as the defunct company once did.

George Clooney, Aflonso Cuarón, Ava DuVernay, Jane Fonda, Regina King, Viola Davis, #MeToo founder Tarana Burke, civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson, Color of Change president Rashad Robinson and more are signators, in addition to groups like GLAAD and Human Rights Watch. The letter was coordinated by the National Domestic Workers Alliance (Ndwa), which collaborated with Participant and director Cuarón on a visibility campaign for his 2018 Oscar winner “Roma.”

“As we say goodbye to Participant, we must underscore that values-based storytelling is needed now more than ever,” the letter states. “There is a whole ecosystem of people, connected by the work of the last 20 years of Participant, ready to work with you.

New York Women In Film & Television Partners With Jordan’s Royal Film Commission On Female Training & Mentorship Scheme – Cannes

Exclusive: New York Women in Film & Television (Nywift) and Jordan’s Royal Film Commission (Rfc) are teaming up on a training and mentorship scheme aimed at aspiring female filmmakers in the country.

The U.S. Embassy in Jordan funded initiative is bannered “Hakayaha: Stories of Women in Jordan” and will aim to fund, develop and produce serialized work in the form of docu-series and narrative series.

The initiative will include all aspects of creating serialized work from development and writing through to production and post-production. It will include filmmaker labs that will run for two years and 30 filmmakers from across Jordan will be selected to participate.

The participants will be mentored by a team of Nywift directors, producers and writers.

Nywift and Rfc Jordan are due to sign a Memorandum of Understanding: Joint Creative Guiding Principles at a special event in Cannes on Tuesday.

At its first ever Television Critics Association press tour presentation, Disney’s Onyx Collective announced three new series orders: true crime docuseries “Ring of Fire: The Life of Annie Mae Aquash” (working title) directed by Yvonne Russo, an untitled project about car culture hosted by Swizz Beatz and “Searching for Soul Food” hosted by chef Alisa Reynolds and executive produced by Melina Matsoukas.

Onyx Collective also set an Oct. 22 premiere date for Oprah Winfrey, Tracee Ellis Ross and Michaela Angela Davis’ docuseries “The Hair Tales” and debuted a trailer for Raamla Mohamed’s legal drama “Reasonable Doubt.” Additionally, an extension was announced of Yara Shahidi and her production company 7th Sun’s overall deal with Onyx Collective and ABC Signature.

Onyx is doubling down with non-scripted with three new series.

The Disney-owned brand is launching true-crime docuseries Ring of Fire: The Life of Annie Mae Aquash (w/t), The Untitled Swizz Beatz Project and Searching for Soul Food.

It comes after the brand won an Oscar for its Questlove-directed feature documentary Summer of Soul.

The orders were unveiled by Onyx President Tara Duncan at its virtual TCA presentation. All three shows will premiere on Hulu.

Yara Shahidi, arguably the face of Freeform, is extending her overall deal with the studio behind Grown-ish and adding Onyx Collective to the pact.

Producers Guild Sets PGA Create, New Program For Emerging, Mid-Career Creatives From Underrepresented Backgrounds

Emerging and mid-career producers from underrepresented backgrounds in the industry are being targeted by a new program, PGA Create, announced today by the Producers Guild of America.

The immersive lab is designed for producers in active development, financing, or packaging of a feature or series and is led by the PGA’s One Guild initiative. There are two program cycles: Scripted and Documentary (Spring 2022 with exact dates Tba).

The deadline to submit for the Scripted Cycle is June 17 and the deadline for the Documentary Cycle will be announced. The program is open to non-members of the Guild.

Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Laura Nix was supposed to board a flight to Copenhagen today, en route to the Cph:dox festival to pitch her latest project. But the Covid-19 pandemic abruptly forced that event to shift online only, one of countless ways the coronavirus emergency is impacting the documentary space.

Nix tells Deadline, “I was working on that pitch, honestly, preparing to give it and then that all went upside down.”
