The beguiling short-story feel of Paul Dano’s intimate family drama makes us share the experience of a teenager whose parents are ‘going through a rough patch’ that may break up the only security he’s known. The performances of Jake Gyllenhaal, Carey Mulligan and especially young Ed Oxenbould are low-key and high-intelligence; each seems a study of people we know, or people we might be. The observance of what rural America was like in 1960 Montana is acute. Highest recommendations.

Netflix's Earthquake Bird Trailer Has Alicia Vikander Caught in a Wicked Thriller
Netflix has revealed the first trailer for Earthquake Bird. This is the latest from acclaimed director Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice), who has, it seems, put together a twisted little thriller for the streaming service. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Susanna Jones. To help bring the story to life, he's enlisted the help of Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander and Riley Keough in what looks like to be cut from the same cloth as a classic David Fincher flick.

The trailer quickly gets to the point that we're dealing with a grizzly whodunnit. The character played by Alicia Vikander is relatively new to Tokyo and makes friends with another American, played by Riley Keough. It then devolves into a love triangle filled with jealousy, twists, turns and a great deal of uncertainty. The footage isn't showing its hand, really just laying some cards out on the table.

Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased Acquired By Focus Features – Stars Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman
Focus Features has acquired worldwide rights to Boy Erased, the coming-of-age and coming-out drama from writer/director Joel Edgerton based on Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith, and Family by Garrard Conley.

Academy Award nominee Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea) will star opposite Academy Award winners Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman.

The movie will be produced by Anonymous Content and will begin production this fall for a 2018 theatrical release. Focus chairman Peter Kujawski made the announcement today.

The film will tell the story of Jared (to be portrayed by Mr. Hedges), the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who is outed to his parents (Ms. Kidman and Mr. Crowe) at age 19. Jared is quickly pressured into attending a gay conversion therapy program – or else be shunned by his family, friends, and church. It is within the program that Jared comes into conflict with its head therapist (Mr. Edgerton).

“I’m excited to work with an ensemble of actors, seasoned and new, to bring Garrard’s story to the screen. I think Focus is the perfect partner on this, and I will always thank Garrard for trusting my passion for his life story. I can’t think of a better reason to get behind the camera again,” said Mr. Edgerton.

Boy Erased is being produced by Mr. Edgerton and Anonymous Content’s Kerry Kohansky-Roberts and Steve Golin, an Academy Award-winning producer of Best Picture Oscar winner Spotlight. Executive-producing the film are Rebecca Yeldham, Ann Ruark, and Anonymous Content’s Kim Hodgert and Tony Lipp. Josh McLaughlin, recently promoted to Focus president of production, will supervise the project for the company.

Mr. Conley’s book was first published last year by Penguin Random House, and was issued earlier this year in paperback. Mr. Edgerton has written the screenplay adaptation; Boy Erased will be his second feature as director following the sleeper hit The Gift (also produced by Ms. Yeldham), which earned him a Directors Guild of America Award nomination. He was recently a Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award nominee for his performance in Focus’ Loving.

Focus Features was honored in 2012 by Point Foundation, the nation’s largest scholarship-granting organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (Lgbt) students of merit, with its Point Inspiration Award, given to a company or organization that champions respect and inclusion of the Lgbt community and operates with the vision that investing in today’s potential will produce a brighter tomorrow.

Celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2017, Focus Features has made and released Academy Award-winning Lgbt-themed films including Beginners, Dallas Buyers Club, The Danish Girl, Milk, and Brokeback Mountain, the company’s all-time top-grosser.

Mr. Kujawski commented, “Garrard’s story is both timely and timeless, both personal and universal. It is a story which will not only deeply move people, but one that we hope will change outlooks. We are thrilled to work once again with Joel, and with the Anonymous Content team. These filmmakers’ passion for this heart-rending project speaks to all of us at Focus, and to why we make the movies we do.”

Watch Miles Teller In Thank You For Your Service Trailer
DreamWorks Pictures has released a first look at their upcoming film Thank You For Your Service.

The drama follows a group of U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq who struggle to integrate back into family and civilian life, while living with the memory of a war that threatens to destroy them long after they’ve left the battlefield.

Starring an ensemble cast led by Miles Teller, Haley Bennett, Joe Cole, Amy Schumer, Beulah Koale, Scott Haze, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Brad Beyer, Omar J. Dorsey and Jayson Warner Smith, the drama is based on the bestselling book by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author David Finkel.

Jason Hall, who wrote the screenplay of American Sniper, makes his directorial debut with Thank You For Your Service and also serves as its screenwriter.

Book synopsis:

No journalist has reckoned with the psychology of war as intimately as David Finkel. In The Good Soldiers, his bestselling account from the front lines of Baghdad, Finkel embedded with the men of the 2-16 Infantry Battalion as they carried out the infamous “surge,” a grueling fifteen-month tour that changed them all forever.

In Thank You for Your Service, Finkel follows many of those same men as they return home and struggle to reintegrate―both into their family lives and into American society at large. He is with them in their most intimate, painful, and hopeful moments as they try to recover, and in doing so, he creates an indelible, essential portrait of what life after war is like―not just for these soldiers, but for their wives, widows, children, and friends, and for the professionals who are truly trying, and to a great degree failing, to undo the damage that has been done. Thank You for Your Service is an act of understanding, and it offers a more complete picture than we have ever had of two essential questions: When we ask young men and women to go to war, what are we asking of them? And when they return, what are we thanking them for?

Jon Kilik (The Hunger Games series, Babel) produces the film, while Ann Ruark (Biutiful) executive produces.

Universal Pictures will release the film October 27.

Paul Dano Sets Directorial Debut With ‘Wildlife,’ Jason Eisener to Adapt ‘New York City Outlaws,’ and More
Following this summer’s Swiss Army Man and after currently taking a part in Bong Joon-ho’s upcoming Okja, Paul Dano is gearing up for his directorial debut Wildlife, Variety reports. The script, penned by Zoe Kazan and Dano himself, is adapted from the 1990 coming-of-age novel by Richard Ford, following a boy who watches his parents marriage unravel after a move. It is being produced, along with Dano, by Alex Saks, Oren Moverman, Ann Ruark. There is no word yet on when it will begin production.

Neither actor is expected to appear onscreen in the film, reports Variety. “Wildlife” tells of a teenager named Joe Brinson whose parents’ marriage slowly dissolves after the family moves to Montana in 1960. Dano and Kazan have been in a relationship since 2007 and co-starred in “Ruby Sparks” (which Kazan wrote solo) together four years ago. In the meantime, here’s the official synopsis, and cast and crew information for “The Beaver,” which will be in theaters in the Spring.

From a release:
