"Death Wish" began its life in 1972 as a Brian Garfield novel. The story followed Paul Benjamin, a mild-mannered accountant living in a dangerous neighborhood in pre-Giuliani New York. He has spent his adult life being a civic volunteer and trying to mitigate crime in the city, feeling that society was merely out of whack. Paul does a philosophical 180, however, when criminals break into his apartment, steal his stuff, beat his wife to death, and leave his daughter in a vegetative state. He immediately becomes bitter, angry, and violent, evolving into a pro-police conservative so quickly it actually disturbs his conservative friends. Before long, Paul even takes to the streets with a gun in his pocket and starts committing lethal acts of vigilante justice.
The book ends with a cop catching Paul in the middle of a murder ... and then letting him go free. It's a polemic about humanity's natural tendencies...

An auction of items owned, used and tinkered with by David Lynch netted $4.25 million last week, with items ranging from screenplays, furniture, art, and much more.
Last week, Julien’s Auctions (in partnership with Turner Classic Movies) had 441 items up for bidding, with David Lynch fans attending both in person and virtually. When it was all said and done, the estate brought in more than the entire budget of David Lynch’s final film, Inland Empire. As for which items took in the most money, that would be the screenplays. The top earner on that front with $195,000 was a collection of 11 scripts for Lynch’s unproduced Ronnie Rocket: The Absurd Mystery of the Strange Forces of Existence, one of which is annotated. At the exact same price was a copy of Lynch’s Lost Highway script, which was estimated to fetch $200-300.

“The shark’s not working.”
For weeks, the cast and crew of “Jaws” kept hearing the same four words over their walkie-talkies while shooting the film’s climactic ocean battle. That familiar message terrified Steven Spielberg, 27 years old at the time, with only one theatrical feature to his name. If one of the production’s three animatronic great whites broke down, it could mean another wasted day. All the setbacks put the film more than 100 days behind schedule and doubled its budget to $8 million.
“We didn’t know how they were ever going to finish this movie,” remembers Jeffrey Kramer, who played a sheriff’s deputy in the film. “There were rumors all around the set that the studio was going to shut us down.”
Spielberg, who had been entrusted with turning Peter Benchley’s bestselling novel about a rampaging shark into a cinematic event, feared he’d be fired.

Eli Roth, the horror filmmaker most famous for movies like Cabin Fever and Thanksgiving, has decided to give underrated filmmaker Joe Begos a chance to play his latest film on the big screen. The movie is titled Jimmy & Stiggs, and upon a screening, Roth was so impressed that he made it a personal mission to plan a theatrical release. The Hostel director says that Jimmy & Stiggs stands out because it "has such life, and it is going to mess some people up."
Judging by Begos' previous filmography, Roth may have a strong point, as Jimmy & Stiggs is the latest in a career filled with horror entries so graphic that they're too intense for those with a weak stomach. Per the report by IndieWire, the duo was present at a Q&a session after an early screening of Jimmy & Stiggs. The event was the result of Roth's...

Major League Baseball is getting into business with one of the sport’s top creators.
The league is acquiring a stake in Jomboy Media, with the company and MLB set to strike a strategic partnership that will lead to the development of new content and IP. Jomboy is led by CEO Courtney Hirsch, who was elevated to the role in March, as well as founders Jimmy O’Brien and Jake Storiale.
Jomboy’s content includes Talkin’ Baseball and Talkin’ Yanks as well as The Warehouse Games, which applies TV-level production to backyard pick up games. MLB says it will work with Jomboy to get MLB stars and celebrities to participate.
Jomboy is also known for his signature “breakdown” videos on YouTube and other social platforms, including sports highlights, but also pop culture events like his breakdown of the Will Smith-Chris Rock Oscars slap heard round the world.

A powerful shot of cinematic ipecac, “Jimmy & Stiggs” is meticulously disgusting. The neon-splattered alien abduction flick took its filmmaker, star, and practical effects wizard Joe Begos four years and roughly $200,000 to make. Genre impresario Eli Roth loved it instantly, and after launching the Horror Section earlier this spring, his new label acquired “Jimmy & Stiggs” for a wide release. On August 15, Begos’ obsessive and bizarre sci-fi nightmare will play in 1,500 theaters.
“You can’t fake authenticity and passion,” said Roth during a recent Q&a — moderated by this reporter, Alison Foreman. “A lot of times horror movies get dismissed because they’re horror movies. This is a work of art. This is David Lynch when he spent six years making ‘Eraserhead,’ or Sam Raimi when he spent years making ‘Evil Dead.’ You can’t fake what these guys did.”

A few months ago, when I was covering CinemaCon for the site, I had the thrill of interviewing none other than Ana de Armas, who teased her role in the John Wick spin-off Ballerina, which opened this week. I enjoyed the action-packed film, and in our chat she talked about her approach to action, and how it felt to reunite with her former Knock Knock co-star, Keanu Reeves, who had actually just filmed the first John Wick when they filmed that Eli Roth movie. She mentioned how surreal it feels to now be leading an instalment in the series with him.
We also got the chance to talk to Norman Reedus, who plays a small, but pivotal role in the film as an assasin who seeks shelter in The Continental, and reminds de Armas’s Eve Macarro of her father, who died protecting her as a child, paving the way for an action-packed second half.

After Avatar: Fire and Ash, James Cameron will venture out of Pandora. The acclaimed filmmaker took to Facebook today to announce that his company, Lightstorm Entertainment, had acquired the rights to Joe Abercrombie's recently released dark fantasy, The Devils. Cameron will co-write a screen adaptation alongside Abercrombie. This marks a significant pivot for Cameron, as the Avatar saga will continue with two more planned sequels following Fire and Ash, which are scheduled for releases in 2029 and 2031.
The Devils will follow Cameron's third anticipated Avatar feature, which will land in theaters in December. According to the dark fantasy novel's description, The Devils follows Brother Diaz, who "has been summoned to the Sacred City, where he is certain a commendation and grand holy assignment awaits him. But his new flock is made up of unrepentant murderers, and outright monsters. The mission he is tasked with will require bloody measures from them...

John Bellairs' "The House with a Clock in Its Walls" is the definition of a cozy horror story. Bellairs' 1973 book fuses the supernatural with the mundane, where the familiar feels a bit off-kilter until it fully embraces the fantastical. It's gothic horror meets weird fiction for young adults, evoking unbearable suspense from the moment our protagonist moves into the town of New Zebedee, Michigan. Given how delightfully spooky this book is, it is no surprise that Hollywood decided to adapt it into a dark fantasy comedy aimed at a younger demographic in 2018. Although key elements from Bellairs' gothic horror tale were changed or omitted, Eli Roth's "The House with a Clock in Its Walls" can be deemed a decently enjoyable adventure. However, if you're partial towards the rustic charm of a book whose horror thrives on subtlety, then Roth's CGI-infested, pop-colored extravaganza might start to feel a bit like an unbearable migraine.

Borderlands 4 is officially coming out on September 12, 2025, and the long-awaited mainline sequel has fans very, very excited. The fans are eagerly awaiting the game’s release after seeing the released images and videos.
But while the game is projected to do well at this point, a lingering question about the game’s price still remains, especially with the market being as volatile as it is now, and many publishers raising their prices.
The game’s boss, Randy Pitchford, recently caused even more controversy when he said that “real fans” would pay even $80 for the game, but he now claims that it was not a stab at the fans and that it was a misunderstanding.

Complicated or Stilted?
Jenn and I have reached the end of our month exploring texts on Countess Elizabeth (or Erzsebet) Báthory. The 17th century noble woman was accused of torturing and murdering young girls, but over time her crimes have taken on a life of their own. Listen to our primer on the historical figure.
Did she really bathe in a bathtub of blood? Did she really kill 650 people? Did she consort with a witch?
The answer is probably no. And after inflammatory texts like Hammer’s Countess Dracula (listen) or Eli Roth’s sensational modern day take in Hostel: Part II (listen), it’s interesting to see writer/director/star Julie Delpy‘s more grounded take.
In 2009’s The Countess, Delpy plays Erzsebet Báthory, a stern, determined widow who doesn’t take flack from men. After being propositioned by a suitor she deems unworthy of her stature (William Hurt...

But first, he intended to wrap up a horror project he had been working on since the early days of the Covid pandemic lockdowns: an alien invasion horror movie that he stars in, because the alternative would have been to cast someone who was in the Screen Actors Guild, which would have added thousands to the budget. Now we know that his sci-fi horror project is called Jimmy and Stiggs, and it’s going to be released by The Horror Section, a company that was just launched by genre regular Eli Roth a few months ago. How Leonardo DiCaprio Almost Starred In Inglourious Basterds & Changed Quentin Tarantino’s WWII Epic
Leonardo DiCaprio Almost Played Hans Landa ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Quentin Tarantino delivered something sharp and unpredictable with Inglourious Basterds. After the blood-soaked frenzy of Kill Bill and the grindhouse style of Death Proof, this World War II tale felt like a shift, not only for himself, but to his fans as well.
The movie still had his signature energy, but there was more precision to it. A group of soldiers led by Aldo Raine slicing through the Nazi ranks, and a young Jewish woman named Shosanna setting fire to revenge using cinema itself sounds like Tarantino was having fun with history.

Horror icon Eli Roth is set to serve another twisted treat to global audiences as his latest spine-chiller, “Ice Cream Man,” racks up a flurry of international sales following its market debut in Cannes.
The film, backed by Media Capital Technologies (McT) and Roth’s newly launched horror label The Horror Section, has closed new distribution deals with Spentzos Film (Greece), Sun (Latin America and Spain), Selim Ramia (Middle East), Mis.Label (Scandinavia), United King Films (Israel), Plaion (Italy), Praesens-Film Ag (Switzerland), Pioneer Films (Philippines), Bir Film (Turkey), Vertical, Blitz Film and Video Distribution (former Yugoslavia), Aqs (Czech Republic and Slovakia) and Acme Film (Baltics).

A decade on, Borderlands director Eli Roth plans to return to his thriller Knock Knock – this time with a German remake.
For a relatively obscure, low-budget thriller, 1977’s Death Game has had a remarkably long afterlife. It was remade in 1980 under the title Vicious And Nude, and then again by director and co-writer Eli Roth, this time as Knock Knock, in 2015.
A decade on, and Roth has plans to re-tell the home invasion nail-biter once more: Variety reports that he’s set to produce a German-language remake of Knock Knock through his new company, The Horror Section. It’s all part of a deal recently made with the German production company, Construction Film.
Announced earlier this year, The Horror Section is an independent studio that will make ‘uncut, hardcore’ genre films, as well as TV, games and podcasts. By the sounds of things, it has a number of feature ideas...

Thanksgivingstar Nell Verlaque has offered an exciting update on the horror movie's sequel. Eli Roth will return as director for the second installment of the horror franchise.
Verlaque, who played serial killer John Carver's nemesis Jessica in the first film, told Deadline on Monday (May 19) that she was "really excited" to get back on set for Thanksgiving 2. She also confirmed that filming is tentatively scheduled to take place very soon.
Nell Verlaque Offers New Hints about Thanksgiving 2

Roth's 2023 hit made more than $46 million at the worldwide box office against a modest budget of only $15 million. The holiday-themed horror movie achieved critical acclaim as well as commercial success, as it received a 84% critical score and a 78% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Verlaque, who played serial killer John Carver's nemesis Jessica in the first film, told Deadline on Monday (May 19) that she was "really excited" to get back on set for Thanksgiving 2. She also confirmed that filming is tentatively scheduled to take place very soon.

Get a head start on the fall festivities with the Thanksgiving: John Carver’s Carving Board Game from Fright-Rags.
Based on Eli Roth‘s Thanksgiving, the game is designed by Roth and Jon Cohn. It features cover art by Zachary Jackson Brown and a layout by Fright-Rags’ Joe Guy Allard.
3-12 players start by attending a department store Black Friday sale that quickly gets out of hand, with people horrifically dying in every aisle. But things go from bad to worse, because a killer wearing a John Carver mask is also on the loose murdering the townsfolk in droves.
Players are rewarded for dying… a lot! The player who dies the most is revealed to be John Carver, triggering a final battle between the rest of the players and the killer.
It includes a game board, die, Carver standee and clip, two Carver’s Carving cards, six Reference cards, one Round Counter token,...

Thanksgiving star Nell Verlaque is excited to get back to the dinner table for another serving. Eli Roth’s schedule has been filling up considerably lately (possibly to wash his mouth out after Borderlands). Next up for Roth is the slasher film The Ice Cream Man. Additionally, his Knock Knock will be getting a German remake and, as part of a deal with Construction Films, he’ll also be directing Final Cut, a giallo-style feature that will star German actress Veronica Ferres, who founded the studio. A sequel to his Grindhouse-trailer-turned-feature was in the cards, but it will be starting much sooner than you think.
Variety reports that Nell Verlaque revealed that filming on Thanksgiving 2 is attempting to commence this year. Verlaque told the publication that she’s read parts of the screenplay and shared that her and Roth bounced ideas off each other. She explained, “I would...

With Thanksgiving months away, Nell Verlaque is getting ready for a second serving of Eli Roth‘s seasonal slasher.
At last Wednesday’s premiere of Prime Video‘s Overcompensating, the actress told Deadline that she’s “really excited” to get into production on the sequel to 2023’s Thanksgiving, which she hopes to film after completing production on her upcoming MGM+ series American Classic.
“I think we will be filming this year,” said Verlaque on the red carpet at the Hollywood Palladium. “I actually just saw Eli, and we’re talking about some plot points, so I’m really excited for it.”
With the first installment surpassing $46 million worldwide and Certified Fresh at 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, Roth announced a sequel on Instagram a few weeks after the original’s premiere in November 2023.

With Eli Roth directing the upcoming horror films Ice Cream Man and Final Cut for his own company The Horror Section, you might be wondering if his studio slasher franchise Thanksgiving has fallen by the wayside. Last we heard, Roth would be returning to direct Thanksgiving 2 for Sony and Spyglass, but what’s the latest on the holiday slasher sequel?
Thanksgiving star Nell Verlaque, who will return for the sequel, says in a new chat with Variety that she expects filming to take place on Thanksgiving 2 later this year.
“There is a script. I know that the goal is to film it this year,” Verlaque tells the outlet.
The actress notes, “[Eli Roth’s] a great director. I told him I really wanted to be tortured… like fully pain, tortured [in the sequel]. I would like to get covered in blood. I’ve read certain parts of [the script] and… he’s told me a few of the ideas.

Long before they shared the screen in Ballerina, Keanu Reeves and Ana de Armas shared the screen in Eli Roth’s Knock Knock. With the director now going the independent route with a new shingle, The Horror Company, Roth is looking to continue his return to hardcore horror via a new production deal set with German company Construction Film, which was founded by German actress Veronica Ferres.
According to Variety, part of the package includes a German-language remake of Knock Knock, which he will produce (but not direct). Next up for Roth is the slasher film The Ice Cream Man, but as part of the deal with Construction Film, he’ll also be directing Final Cut, a giallo-style feature in which Ferres will also appear. “Thanksgiving” star Nell Verlaque can’t wait to shoot the sequel to the surprise box office hit.
Her character Jessica is one of the few who survived director and co-writer Eli Roth’s first Turkey-time holiday slasher.
Verlaque tells me she’s read parts of the follow-up script and Roth has shared some more ideas with her.
“I would like to get covered in blood,” she told me at the premiere of Benito Skinner’s new Prime Video comedy series, “Overcompensating.”
That’s the least gruesome of her ideas. “I told him I really wanted to be tortured,” Verlaque said. “Like fully pained [and] tortured.”
She said of Roth’s boundary-pushing work, “I think it’s more fun as an actor. The crazier, the better for me.”
The first film revolved around a serial killer who dresses like a 17th-century pilgrim and terrorizes residents of Plymouth, Mass., during the holiday season.

Eli Roth’s filmmaking career is getting a fresh shot of life with his new venture The Horror Section, which will see Roth making new horror movies outside of the studio system. One of the first projects on the slate is a new original horror film Roth will be directing titled The Ice Cream Man, which he described as his “most terrifying and insane film to date.”
Variety reports that The Horror Section has signed a deal with German production banner Construction Film, said to be a “multi-year, multi-picture co-financing and production alliance.”
Two titles are already on the Horror Section x Construction Film slate, one of which is a German remake of Roth’s movie Knock Knock – which itself was a remake of 1977’s Death Game.
Released back in 2015, Roth’s Knock Knock starred Keanu Reeves, Ana de Armas, and Lorenza Izzo, and Roth will produce the upcoming German-language remake.

Eli Roth’s recently-launched company The Horror Section has signed a deal with Construction Film, the German-based production banner founded by producer and actress Veronica Ferres.
The multi-year, multi-picture co-financing and production alliance — signed in partnership with Media Capital Technologies — has launched with the announcement of two genre-driven feature titles.
Leading the slate is a German-language remake of Eli Roth’s 2015 psychological crime thriller “Knock Knock,” which originally starred Keanu Reeves and Ana de Armas. Roth is set to produce. He will also write and direct an original project, “Final Cut,” a giallo feature currently in development in which Veronica Ferres will play a principal role. The video game curse strikes again! While gamers and movie fans alike are still reeling from the spectacular failure of Borderlands at the box office, it’s worth remembering that Hollywood’s obsession with adapting interactive entertainment has produced far worse results.
The Eli Roth-directed Borderlands adaptation starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart may have crashed and burned with a dismal 10% Rotten Tomatoes score, but it’s practically Oscar-worthy compared to the absolute bottom of the video game movie barrel.
That dubious honor belongs to a film so terrible, it makes Borderlands look like a masterpiece.
When you’re alone in the dark, the real horror is the movie itself
Long before Borderlands disappointed audiences worldwide, a pioneering survival horror game called Alone in the Dark revolutionized gaming in 1992. This groundbreaking title featured 3D characters against pre-rendered backgrounds and established many conventions that would later define the horror genre in games like Resident Evil.

Horror filmmaker Eli Roth is ready to develop his next terrifying movie. While we wait for the follow-up to 2023's holiday slasher Thanksgiving, it looks like Roth is setting his sights onto a new project called Ice Cream Man.
Media Capital Technologies (McT) and Roth's own independent studio The Horror Section will fully finance the film (via Variety). Given that Roth is relatively well-known in the filmmaking world, it might come as a surprise that his movie is getting the indie production treatment, but when you learn more about Ice Cream Man, you'll understand why.
Notably, he claims it will likely be his "most terrifying and insane film to date." And considering this is the man that brought us the Hostel franchise, that's saying something.
The first Hostel is still considered one of the most disturbing horror movies ever made, perhaps most infamously for the graphic eyeball torture scene that happens near the end.

Horror maestro Eli Roth has lined up his next horror movie after Thanksgiving 2 and according to the director, it's a film that studios "were too afraid" to make. However, longtime horror fans might be confused by its title.
Per Variety, Roth is set to write and direct Ice Cream Man, a new horror movie from Media Capital Technologies and The Horror Section. According to the outlet, Ice Cream Man is the "story of an idyllic summer town descending into madness when an ice cream man serves kids sweet delights with horrifying results." Roth launched The Horror Section, a horror media company, in March alongside Media Capital Technologies to produce and distribute movies, TV, and podcasts in the horror landscape, according to The Hollywood Reporter. For Roth, Ice Cream Man is the perfect project for The Horror Section, as studios were apprehensive to make the movie, according to the horror filmmaker.

The Environmental Media Association kicked off its ninth annual Impact Summit on Thursday, rolling out a two-day lineup of stars and activists for wide-ranging conversations about the environment.
A large focus of the summit’s first day was discussing the aftermath of the Los Angeles wildfires that devastated the Pacific Palisades and Altadena areas earlier this year. Jenna Dewan led a conversation about philanthropy and how the city banded together after the fires, while Property Brothers star Drew Scott moderated a panel about rebuilding homes in the destroyed areas.

Neapolitan soft scoop has never been more terrifying, as Eli Roth prepares to make his “insane” horror film, Ice Cream Man.
It’s probably fair to say that Eli Roth found little success with Borderlands, his highly expected videogame adaptation that bombed at both the box office and with critics. This writer didn’t mind the film, but it does seem that Roth is more comfortable working in horror than action blockbusters.
Roth is set to return to horror with Ice Cream Man: a new, original movie idea he’s been working on for over 20 years, as Variety notes.
Roth has written the script and will direct, but plot details are being kept under wraps, though it sounds likely that Roth is back on similar darkly comic territory to his 2023 movie, Thanksgiving.

Sixteen years passed from the time Eli Roth made a slasher faux trailer called Thanksgiving for the Robert Rodriguez / Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse to the day when a feature version of Thanksgiving (read our review Here) finally made its way into theatres – and soon after that movie was released in 2023, it was announced that a sequel would be coming along in 2025. Five months ago, we heard that Thanksgiving 2 would start filming in March… but that didn’t happen. To be ready for a Thanksgiving 2025 release, the slasher sequel would need to start filming any day now. But apparently we’re not getting Thanksgiving 2 this year, because it has just been announced that Roth will be making a different horror movie called Ice Cream Man in Canada this summer!

Adam Cesare’s smash-hit horror novel Clown in a Cornfield (2020) makes the leap from page to screen this week, bringing to life one of the most talked about villains in the recent horror fiction scene: Frendo The Clown. I haven’t read the book myself, but literally everyone around has been singing its praises for years now and good luck finding a “Best Young Adult Horror Books To Read This Summer” list that doesn’t include it somewhere. Directed by Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil), who also co-wrote the adaptation, Clown in a Cornfield (2025) is a genre-bending, grease paint splattered slasher that breaks rules, bashes brains and delivers one hell of a gory harvest for Horror fans.

Amazon MGM Studios has assembled the main cast of its new YA series Off Campus, based on the best-selling book series by Elle Kennedy.
Ella Bright (The Crown), Belmont Cameli (Until Dawn), Mika Abdalla (The Pitt), Antonio Cipriano (Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin), Jalen Thomas Brooks (The Pitt), Stephen Kalyn (Gen V) and Josh Heuston have been tapped as series regulars in the Prime Video romantic drama, created by Louisa Levy who serves as co-showrunner alongside Gina Fattore.
There are 5 books in Kennedy’s Off-Campus series, which depicts the elite ice hockey team, and the women in their lives, as they grapple with love, heartbreak, and self-discovery — forging deep friendships and enduring bonds while navigating the complexities that come with transitioning into adulthood.
In the vein of Bridgerton, each of the first four novels tells the love story of a hockey player, with the fifth being a novella collection of all four couples.

Singer/songwriter Charli xcx is working on building up her film acting career, and she’s going about it in a really interesting way. A couple of years ago, we heard that she was set to make her feature acting debut with Legendary Entertainment’s remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death… and someday we might even get to see that movie, but as of right now it still doesn’t have a distributor. Since working on Faces of Death, Charli xcx has taken roles in the Gregg Araki thriller I Want Your Sex, Cathy Yan’s The Gallerist, Romain Gavras’s Sacrifice, Jeremy O. Harris and Pete Ohs’ Erupjca, and Julia Jackman’s graphic novel adaptation 100 Nights of Hero. Francis Ford Coppola’s 2024 film Megalopolismay have failed to become a box office success, but one of the movie’s actors says that while making the sci-fi epic, he received the best direction he’s ever heard on set. Adam Driver(Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens) paid tribute to Coppola at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on April 26 as the Oscar-winning director received AFI’s 50th Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute.
Per Deadline, Driver called Coppola one of his “cinematic heroes” and talked about working with The Godfather director on Megalopolis. Driver starred in the film, which Coppola self-funded after first coming up with the idea back in 1983, as Cesar Catilina.
Driver called Coppola “A theater director who brought his process to film and revolutionized how we think about cinema, and certainly how we make it.” He continued, “His movies, for some, are...

Over the last few years, we’ve seen an uptick in holiday-centered horror fare. With movies like Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving and Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 putting the fear back in festive, the subgenre is staged for a major comeback. Earlier this year, filmmaker Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within) blended slasher with rom-com when he unveiled his Valentine’s Day-themed feature, Heart Eyes. Now, three months since the film terrorized audiences in cinemas, it’s set to slice and dice its way onto streaming. Those looking to snuggle into a scarefest with their sweetie can switch on Netflix beginning May 8 when the Olivia Holt (Totally Killer) and Mason Gooding (Scream)-led film hits the platform.
The idea behind Ruben’s latest project is an intriguing one. From a screenplay co-penned by Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy comes a story about a crazed serial killer who stalks couples on Valentine’s Day.

Ryan Coogler responded to the media attention surrounding his Warner Bros. agreement for Sinners, stating that the arrangement he secured is neither new nor unusual in the film industry. During an interview with journalist Amy Goodman on Democracy Now!, Coogler explained that filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, Eli Roth, and Christopher Nolan have received similar deals involving first-dollar gross participation and long-term ownership rights.
“I’m not the first filmmaker to get any of these deals. And Warner Bros. is not the first studio to provide these deals to a filmmaker,” Coogler said. He noted that the studio’s decision to transfer ownership after 25 years was in line with existing industry practices. When asked why his deal drew such heightened attention, Coogler laughed and declined to speculate, adding, “I have my guesses, but I’d rather not say.”
Reports suggested that some rival studios were surprised by Warner Bros.’ willingness to structure the agreement.
