There were a lot of great takeaways from James Gunn’s Superman but the best of them were undoubtedly the characters. Sure, the story was amazing, but the performers had to bring their characters to life. For example, you have to love Otis (played by Terence Rosemore) and the rest of Lex Luthor’s crew; they weren’t his lackeys, they actually believed in what they were doing, and it showed.
With that in mind, this article will highlight all of the major characters in Superman and the things that made them, well, super.

As cheesy as it may sound, the Man of Steel in this film will leave you feeling hopeful. He was beaten down physically and emotionally, but he never truly gave up.

Some of the biggest complaints from Dceu diehards about the new Superman film are centered around the fact that the characters is not as powerful as depicted in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel.
However, a strong counterpoint is that most of the MCU heavy hitters like Thor and Hulk, are not as powerful as their comic book counterparts and the general audience doesn't seem to mind.
Gunn recently chatted with CBS Mornings and addressed the issue.
"There are some writers in the comics, like Grant Morrison, who took the idea of the all-powerful Superman and told great stories with it. But for me, as a child, the reason I liked Batman better than Superman was because Superman was just too strong at times. We're building a whole universe of characters, and I didn't want to have one guy who was so much stronger than anybody else, that a guy...

Superman delivers one of the most despicable interpretations of Lex Luthor to date. The villain is determined to destroy the Man of Steel at all costs and finds himself surrounded by a team willing (or terrified enough) to do anything he demands of them.
Now, at least two of those Luthorcorp lackeys have been confirmed for Peacemaker season 2. Eagle-eyed fans have noticed that, in a previously released featurette for the HBO Max series, Otis (Terence Rosemore) and Sydney (Stephen Blackehart) can be seen alongside Rick Flag Sr.
In Superman, Otis doesn't hesitate to obey Lex's every order and seems more than happy to unleash destruction on Metropolis if it means bringing down its alien protector.
Sydney, meanwhile, was a scientist and ultimately seemed to have a change of heart when he attempted to convince his boss to close the dimensional rift that was tearing the city in half. He even offers to help Mister Terrific,...

According to a new behind-the-scenes featurette, the Dcu's next TV series is confirmed to include two important Superman characters. After Superman kicked off the Dcu on the big screen, the action is set to continue on the small screen with Peacemaker Season 2, bringing back John Cena's Christopher Smith to the forefront.
The upcoming HBO Max series is confirmed to explore the ramifications of the events of Superman, bringing Maxwell Lord's Justice Gang into the fold and including a "really big" cameo at some point who may or may not be one of the main characters in the David Corenswet-led DC Studios movie. Ahead of the show's premiere this August, more Superman characters are confirmed to appear in Peacemaker Season 2, which could play a crucial role in shaping the Dcu's grand storyline.

As James Gunn’s Superman surges to more than $22 million in box office previews (along with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes), the filmmaker reportedly is looking ahead to the possibility of at least two TV spinoffs.
Gunn is considering TV spinoffs for Superman characters such as Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific and Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen, according to a report Thursday night in the Wall Street Journal.
Gunn already has Season 2 of Peacemaker, from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television, set to release on August 21. And his series Lanterns, starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, is in post for premiere sometime in 2026.
In a recent Q&a with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn gave an update on Paradise Lost, saying it “is moving along. It’s slow-moving, but it’s moving.” He also mentioned another TV show “that’s my favorite thing in all of this, that is hopefully getting made soon.

At least two characters from James Gunn’s Superman — which is now in theaters and officially launches the film side of the new Dcu — are being eyed to headline TV spinoffs.
The Superman movie stars David Corenswet (of TV’s The Politician and Lady in the Lake) as the titular Kal-El aka Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent, while Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) plays Daily Planet journo Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (The Great) fills the role of supervillain Lex Luthor.

The most-awaited Superman movie is here. James Gunn has put a unique spin on DC’s Man of Steel, and fans have already loved what they got to see in the promotional material. Gunn brings optimism and hope back to the character while fleshing out interesting characters based on the comics and the original Superman movie of 1978.
During a press conference, the DC CEO shared that the hero in his movie represented “the basic kindness of human beings” (via ScreenRant). He has brought an interesting mix of characters to his first film, played by an ensemble cast. Gunn’s cast consists mostly of up-and-coming actors in Hollywood.

Ahead of tomorrow night's Amazon Prime Early Access Screenings, Warner Bros. is finally ready to debut Superman, their long-awaited Dcu launching pad, to the world and have started a red carpet world premiere live stream - similar to the ones held over by their friends at Marvel Studios - where many of the cast and crew, including leading man David Corenswet, are expected to make appearances, alongside family and possibly surprise members of the extended Dcu.
If you haven't already, make sure to secure your tickets for either tomorrow night or this weekend. While Jurassic World Rebirth will likely provide some stiff competition, especially after its gargantuan $323 million opening weekend, the early projections are looking at a $90 million to $125 million opening for the Man of Steel, and we'd reckon, it'll end up opening on the higher end of that range.

GQ calls the film, "one of the most distinct superhero films in a long time, with a tone that feels honest and true to the spirit of Superman- and therefore, at odds with pretty much everything else in the genre right now. Gunn's approach is colorful, both in its palette and the costumes; proudly fantastical with flying orbs, robots, portals, and giant monsters...You won't find any controversial neck-snapping here."

Superman's review embargo doesn't lift until tomorrow but it seems anticipation for the first Dcu film from James Gunn has several media outlets willing to risk being banned from future advance screenings by Warner Bros.
Previously, The Daily Beast posted a review three days ago, calling the film an "overstuffed Saturday morning cartoon" that was "silly" and overpopulated by "two-dimensional heroes and villains."
There have been other reactions that have broken the embargo in the interim, but we now have our second full review and it's much more positive.
The Sunday Times calls the film a "triumph" and says that "after a long wait, this is the film the character deserves."

While in the comics, Hawkgirl is traditionally romantically linked to Hawkman, the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited cartoon introduced a relationship between Hawkgirl and Green Lantern John Stewart that had its fair share of shippers.
Actress Isabela Merced, who plays Hawkgirl in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, appears to be a fan of that version of the character, especially the romance between Hawkgirl and Green Lantern that was depicted across several seasons.
In a recent interview with Nerdist, she expressed interest in exploring a similar storyline in the DC Universe, if that’s the direction the creative team decides to take her character.
"I really love the idea- and that's why I love Lois and Clark's story, of the alien and human love story. There's just something so romantic about that to me. It's like, 'We shouldn't, but we should, but we shouldn't.' And that really...

James Gunn, co-chair of DC Studios, recently revealed that he expects to read two different Batman scripts before the end of 2025.
One of those is likely The Batman Part II, written by Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, which was just completed. Gunn has said he hasn’t read it yet, but now that it’s finished, it’s safe to assume that’s one of the scripts he’s referring to. But what’s the second project?
Back in January 2023, Gunn announced The Brave and the Bold as part of the first wave of Dcu films under the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters banner. Andy Muschietti, director of The Flash, was confirmed to direct, but no screenwriter was publicly named.

In a recent interview snippet, Superman actor David Corenswet stated that he wants to see his Man of Steel meet up with Nightwing or one of the Robins.
"I think, like a Nightwing character, one of Batman's proteges. I think it would be really cool because Superman has good dad energy. I'd like to see his uncle energy."
In most comic book continuities, Nightwing gets his name from Superman. After parting ways with Batman and leaving his role as Robin behind, Dick Grayson turned to Superman for guidance.
During their conversation, Superman told him a story from Kryptonian folklore about a hero named Nightwing, a symbol of hope, transformation, and protection for the vulnerable. Moved by the legend and determined to become his own kind of hero, Dick embraced the name Nightwing as a way to honor that tale and step out of Batman’s shadow.

In Batman: The Animated Series and Superman: The Animated Series, Lex Luthor and the Joker first teamed up in the three-part 1997 episode titled "World's Finest."
In the crossover event, the story kicks off in Gotham City, where the Joker pulls off a heist involving a giant statue made of Kryptonite. After securing the radioactive prize, he makes his way to Metropolis with a plan in mind. There, he approaches Lex Luthor and proposes a deal: he’ll take down Superman if Luthor agrees to pay him a huge sum in return.
This leads Superman and Batman to inevitably cross paths and one-up each other by figuring out their respective secret identities. They team up and eventually stop Lex and the Joker, setting the stage for the later arrival of another fantastic animated series, Justice League.
Could something similar happen in the Dcu, where audiences are introduced to a reverse take on the World's Finest?...

Out of all the superheroes appearing in Superman, Michael Holt, aka Mister Terrific, might be the most intriguing. That's because he's a legacy character- the second person to take up the Mister Terrific mantle after Terry Sloane debuted as the character in the Golden Age.
Sloane, also known as the Man of 1,000 Talents, was a major figure in the Justice Society of America and the All-Star Squadron. That raises an interesting question: do these classic superhero teams already exist in James Gunn’s DC Universe?
So far, none of the promotional interviews for Superman have addressed whether Mister Terrific is a legacy character who follows in Sloane’s footsteps. That could be because it’s a plot point the film and these pre-release interviews want to avoid spoilers.
Another question that comes to mind about Mister Terrific is why would someone that's a genius inventor and billionaire and owner of Holt Industries,...

The fact that the Hall of Justice is featured in Superman has been something of an open secret for quite some time.
Back when filming moved from Cleveland and Cincinnati in February 2024, speculation had already begun about the possible inclusion of the Justice League's headquarters.

"You see the Hall of Justice, and you see that it’s not even finished yet," James Gunn said in a previous interview. "It’s owned by Maxwell Lord, and he owns the Justice Gang."

If you've been following Superman marketing and promotional materials for a lengthy amount of time, you'll likely be aware that in the upcoming film, Lex Luthor's company is not going by the traditional LexCorp. Instead, it's called LuthorCorp.
Speaking to Comicbook, director James Gunn stated that the decision was intentional and that it partially stems from the fact that he's a big Smallville fan.
Gunn stated, "I was taking lots of different stuff from comic books, TV shows and movies- and I'm a Smallville fan. It was LuthorCorp in Smallville. But it also let the door..first of all, most people don't name their corporations after their first name, so I believe it more, in terms of that. A newly released Superman clip showcases a tense and explosive confrontation between the Man of Steel and Lex Luthor.
Storming into Lex’s office, Superman blasts the double doors off their hinges and hurls the villain’s lavish desk aside with ease, demanding answers, as it's revealed that Spoiler: [Krypto] has been kidnapped. Despite the chaos, Lex stays calm and collected, casually sipping his coffee as if nothing’s amiss.
The scene is arguably the most impactful footage revealed so far and does a great job of selling the tone of the film. For fans still unsure, it’s well worth a look, though with the film’s July 11 release fast approaching, you might want to avoid any further clips to keep the experience fresh.

We finally have solid confirmation about who's playing Superman's parents in the Dcu's first cinematic outing.
Bradley Cooper has been rumored to be portraying Jor-El in the film, and that's been confirmed via the 30 minute screening released earlier this month.
However, we also have a report on who's portraying Superman's biological mom, Lara Lor-Van.
Westworld alum Angela Sarafyan is portraying Jor-El's wife.
While James Gunn has previously stated that Superman isn't an origin movie, perhaps we will still get an all-too-familiar shot of a baby Kal-El blasting off from Krypton, right before it explodes?
There's also a chance that Superman's parents appear as AI holograms in the Fortress of Solitude, as there's precedent in previously released comics and animated films.
While Superman’s biological parents connect him to the legacy of a lost alien world, it’s his adoptive Earth parents- Ma and Pa Kent, who shape the man he becomes.

Esquire Philippines caught up with Superman director James Gunn as the film's press tour recently kicked off in Manila. Gunn fielded a number of questions that hopefully showcase that he was the right person to write and direct this new interpretation of the Big Blue Boy Scout.
On the topic of creating a Superman that isn't just perfect and powerful but also has flaws, Gunn stated, "Even though this is a very kind, very good Superman- we see that he can be a little bit stubborn and he can be a little impulsive with his actions. He's got a really, incredibly complex personality."
When asked if he was concerned about dropping the audience into a fully-formed fictional superhero world, Gunn explained that he didn't have any trepidation about it. At least not anymore, as he's screened the film for a number of people and no one expressed that they felt confused or lost.

Imagine Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige taking time out of his packed schedule to regularly shut down fan rumors online.
That’s not something we’ve seen or ever will, but it’s a routine part of James Gunn’s reality as co-chair of DC Studios.
Despite the massive responsibility of overseeing the DC Universe reboot and directing Superman, Gunn still finds time to engage with fans on social media, frequently correcting misinformation.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he revealed that his main motivation for stepping in is to protect the filmmakers, actors, and creatives involved in these high-stakes projects.
“I’m trying to cut back,” Gunn admitted. “But every once in a while, a rumor spreads fast enough that it could actually affect someone personally—and that’s when I feel the need to step in.”

With three weeks left to go, James Gunn and DC Studios’ Superman is tracking to open in the $135 million range at the domestic box office.
If that forecast is right, Superman would land high up on the list of DC openings, although it would lag well behind the $166 million domestic debut of 2016’s Batman v Superman: The Dawn of Justice, not adjusted for inflation. At the same time, it would come in safely ahead of the last solo Superman movie, Zack Snyder’s 2013 film Man of Steel ($116 million).
Opinion, however, is sharply divided as to just how high Superman can fly.
The $135 million stat is from leading tracking service the National Research Group, according to sources with access to the data. Nrg always provides a range in addition to a solo number; in this case, the range for Superman’s domestic opening is $125 million to $145 million.

Superman Tracking Toward Impressive Box Office Opening Weekend (But It Won't Be a James Gunn Record)
James Gunn's Superman has arrived on tracking ahead of its July 11 release. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the first DC Universe movie will be able to break the director's opening weekend record.
Per Deadline, Nrg has Superman earning between $125 million and $145 million during its domestic debut. However, various distribution sources believe the real range for the Dcu blockbuster is closer to the $90 million and $125 million range. Regardless, Superman seems unlikely to beat the opening weekend of Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which made $146.5 million back in 2017. On the upside, Superman looks like it will become Gunn's second-best opening weekend, so long as it lands somewhere around that $125 million mark.
The opening weekends for Gunn's remaining five directorial efforts, from highest to lowest, are Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($118M), Guardians of the Galaxy ($94M), The Suicide Squad ($26M), Slither ($3.8M), and Slither ($46K). There's a chance,...

An interview with DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran appears in all the new DC Comics titles released this week as part of the DC Nation Spotlight series.
In the write-up, Safran discusses how Nicholas Hoult will redefine the role of Lex Luthor for a new generation when Superman hits theaters later this summer.
"He is the Lex Luthor for the next generation, for sure. He is who people will think of when they think of Lex. Nick is an extraordinary actor. He has been doing this since he was five years old. I think he kind of knew Lex was the role of a lifetime for him, and he embraced it immediately."
Safran also shares details on where the film picks up in terms of Clark's superhero and professional career, as well as his romance with Lois.

Recently, remarks from DC Studios co-chair and Superman director James Gunn about Marvel Studios' recent struggles with box office and critical reception have made waves online.
In the Rolling Stone article, Gunn stated that the high output of Marvel content for Disney+ "killed them."
Now, Gunn, is clarifying those comments a bit over on @Threads, where he posted, "To be clear - & as Is clear in the context of the interview- I didn't say "it killed them" like they're over but they were screwed by the situation they had no control over. They're on the other side of that now, which is good. "
He went on to add, "The sacrifice-everything-for-streaming craze killed many good things by forcing a demand for "content" that couldn't possibly be met, putting movies on TV before they had a proper theatrical run & much more. The insanity has died down & balanced out everywhere. Thank God."

While responding to fans on @Threads, Superman director and DC Studios co-chair James Gunn was asked about the possible return of Princess Ilana Rostovic of Pokolistan.
In the action-packed season finale of Creature Commandos, "A Very Funny Monster," Princess Ilana Rostovic is killed by none other than the Bride. The Creature Commandos originally set out to assassinate Ilan based on a vision from Circe that she would kick off World War III. But as things unfolded, Amanda Waller ultimately called off the hit.
Even with the mission canceled, a deadly fight broke out. Ilana ended up killing Nina Mazursky during Nina's attempt to assassinate her, though Ilana acted in self-defense. Heartbroken over Nina's death, and now having proof that Ilana was actually planning to start World War III (she'd even tricked Waller using Clayface!), the Bride took matters into her own hands and shot Ilana in the head.

A brand new episode of the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast has just dropped, featuring two exciting guests from the upcoming Superman film: Edi Gathegi, who plays Mister Terrific, and María Gabriela de Faría, cast as The Engineer, an associate of Lex Luthor.
During his appearance, Edi Gathegi clarified a key detail about Mister Terrific's iconic "T-mask," confirming that it's not paint, but rather made of nanotechnology. This aligns with the comic book portrayal, where Mister Terrific's entire costume often forms from millions of nanotech bots released from his T-spheres.
Gathegi also shared insights into how he developed his portrayal of Michael Holt (Mister Terrific). He initially approached the role with a clear idea formed during his screen test. However, once filming began, the collaborative process led to a more nuanced and intricate performance. "I didn't know what was going to happen until we did it," Gathegi revealed. "I had...

The debut adventures of David Corenswet's Man of Steel will be shorter than some fans might have expected. International distributors have received the official runtime for James Gunn's Superman, and it's set to be one of the iconic superhero's shortest movies ever made.
Per Dcu Superman News on X, Superman will have a runtime of two hours and two minutes, or 122 minutes. This is a significant runtime drop from the last solo movie featuring Superman, Zack Snyder's Man of Steel (2013), which clocked in at 143 minutes long. In fact, Gunn's movie is the fourth-shortest Superman movie ever made, having a runtime longer than just Superman and the Mole Men (58 mins), Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (90 mins), and Superman II: The Richer Donner Cut (116 mins). The longest Superman movies remain the television cut of Superman: The Movie (an astounding 188 mins) and Superman Returns (154 mins).

You'd be hard-pressed to find a DC Comics fan who doesn't admit that Hawkman and Hawkgirl's history is one of the most notoriously tangled sagas in all of comics. Their story stretches back to ancient Egypt, where a jealous priest's Nth metal dagger cursed them to an endless cycle of death and rebirth.
Thanks to numerous comic reboots and retcons, the mantle of Hawkgirl has been worn by three prominent figures:
Shiera Sanders Hall: The original Golden Age Hawkgirl. Shayera Hol (née Thal): A Thanagarian police officer from the Silver Age. Kendra Saunders: Often depicted as a direct reincarnation of Shiera.

The previous year proved to be a whirlwind for Isabella Merced, who skillfully balanced two major projects during the summer months.
She took on the role of Kendra Saunders, also known as Hawkgirl, in James Gunn's highly anticipated Superman film, while simultaneously portraying Dina in HBO's acclaimed adaptation of the video game The Last of Us.
Reflecting on this demanding period, Merced likened her experience to "dating two people at once," explaining the constant "juggling" of schedules and even quipping about ensuring she was texting the correct assistant director. This intense workload involved a flurry of travel, with Merced recalling hitting "like eight flights a month."
Despite the challenges, the prospect of her character inspiring Halloween costumes brought a wave of excitement, as Merced exclaimed, "I cannot wait that's what I'm really excited for that and the action figures."

Nicholas Hoult breaks down his take on Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman, which sounds like the villain's most dangerous incarnation. Lex Luthor is Superman's arch enemy and has been interpreted in various ways by Gene Hackman, Jesse Eisenberg, Michael Rossenbaum, and Jon Cryer, to name a few. Hoult, who originally auditioned for Superman, is tasked with putting a fresh spin on a villain that audiences have seen countless times.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Hoult broke down his vision of Lex Luthor. While many would call Luthor a mad scientist, director James Gunn described him as a "sorcerer of science," a description Hoult agrees with, saying he has such an understanding of technology that it seems to verge on supernatural. Hoult wanted Luthor to be intimidating, describing the character as "an alpha." Hoult acknowledged that he did draw some inspiration from tech moguls like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, but...

Superman: Metamorpho Actor Anthony Carrigan Hints At The Elemental Hero's Explosive Big Screen Debut
Actor Anthony Carrigan is the latest Superman cast member to appear on the DC Studios Showcase podcast, following Skyler Gisondo, Beck Bennett, and Mikaela Hoover.
Longtime DC Comics fans are incredibly excited to see a big-screen version of Rex Mason aka Metamorpho appear in Superman, as it's well-established comic book lore that the somewhat obscure character is a bona fide powerhouse.
Carrigan shared that he definitely felt a responsibility to bring such a complex character to life, stating, "The real ones- the real ones know this character is incredible. So I knew that there was a big responsibility to come in and do something that honors the character. That lights a fire in me. James Gunn's Superman figures to be one of the biggest movies of the year and Hawkgirl actress Isabela Merced and Engineer actress Maria Gabriela de Faria are reflecting on their experiences at different points of the filming process.
For De Faria who portrays one of DC Comics' most powerful characters, the Engineer, she reflected on the physical nature of her role. It sounds like she'll have some intense fight scenes, although we haven't seen much of the character in any of the previously released footage.
Speaking to Remezcla, de Faria stated, "This experience was super challenging physically, but it was also very challenging emotionally. My character as The Engineer is a very physical character."
"And not only because of the image that the character has in the comic. But because of all the things I had to do on set. here is a lot of fighting and flying there.

While there were a ton of casting rumors for Superman: Legacy, now known as Superman back in late-2023, there was only one name ever attached to the role of Jimmy Olsen, and that was actor Skyler Gisondo .
This is a rare instance where the #1 fan choice for a character actually secures the role.
Jimmy Olsen is a rich comic book character with over 80 years of history as Superman's best pal. However, he gets into trouble so much, Olsen often wears a high-frequency supersonic Signal Watch that, when switched on, will signal to the Man of Steel that he needs to be rescued.
With all of that history in mind, how does Gisondo feel about taking on such a legacy character? Appearing on the DC Studios Showcase podcast, the actor revealed that he's anxious to see a first cut of the film and that he hopes he did the character's legacy justice.

A video has surfaced online of David Corenswet's Superman suit, and it offers a chance to get a close-up of the reimagined costume the actor wears in the upcoming film.
Judianna Makovsky, who previously collaborated with James Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, The Suicide Squad, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is the costume designer for Superman. Although it should be noted that the Superman suit was a collaborative process between Makovsky, Gunn, and Corenswet.

As for the Man of Steel himself, David Corenswet has expressed how much he’s loving every moment of stepping into the role of DC’s iconic big blue Boy Scout. Interestingly, he’s also admitted that he feels the real pressure falls more on James Gunn as the director and mastermind behind the Dcu.

"Being a child, I loved the purity of Superman. It was a time when I was starting to understand what movies were," Gunn shared at the beginning of the video, as a couple of clips from the Christopher Reeve-led Superman are shown. Peter Safran, who co-heads DC Studios with Gunn, then opened up about the road to the new Superman, explaining that Gunn was initially unsure that he should be the one to bring the Man of Steel back to the big screen. "I had been trying to crack it for years," Gunn admitted in the video over top of new behind-the-scenes looks at Superman.
In James Gunn we trust.
