There were a lot of great takeaways from James Gunn’s Superman but the best of them were undoubtedly the characters. Sure, the story was amazing, but the performers had to bring their characters to life. For example, you have to love Otis (played by Terence Rosemore) and the rest of Lex Luthor’s crew; they weren’t his lackeys, they actually believed in what they were doing, and it showed.

With that in mind, this article will highlight all of the major characters in Superman and the things that made them, well, super.

As cheesy as it may sound, the Man of Steel in this film will leave you feeling hopeful. He was beaten down physically and emotionally, but he never truly gave up.

Some of the biggest complaints from Dceu diehards about the new Superman film are centered around the fact that the characters is not as powerful as depicted in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel.

However, a strong counterpoint is that most of the MCU heavy hitters like Thor and Hulk, are not as powerful as their comic book counterparts and the general audience doesn't seem to mind.

Gunn recently chatted with CBS Mornings and addressed the issue.

"There are some writers in the comics, like Grant Morrison, who took the idea of the all-powerful Superman and told great stories with it. But for me, as a child, the reason I liked Batman better than Superman was because Superman was just too strong at times. Superman delivers one of the most despicable interpretations of Lex Luthor to date. The villain is determined to destroy the Man of Steel at all costs and finds himself surrounded by a team willing (or terrified enough) to do anything he demands of them.

According to a new behind-the-scenes featurette, the Dcu's next TV series is confirmed to include two important Superman characters. After Superman kicked off the Dcu on the big screen, the action is set to continue on the small screen with Peacemaker Season 2, bringing back John Cena's Christopher Smith to the forefront. 

The upcoming HBO Max series is confirmed to explore the ramifications of the events of Superman, bringing Maxwell Lord's Justice Gang into the fold and including a "really big" cameo at some point who may or may not be one of the main characters in the David Corenswet-led DC Studios movie. As James Gunn’s Superman surges to more than $22 million in box office previews (along with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes), the filmmaker reportedly is looking ahead to the possibility of at least two TV spinoffs.

Gunn is considering TV spinoffs for Superman characters such as Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific and Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen, according to a report Thursday night in the Wall Street Journal.

Gunn already has Season 2 of Peacemaker, from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television, set to release on August 21. And his series Lanterns, starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, is in post for premiere sometime in 2026.

In a recent Q&a with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn gave an update on Paradise Lost, saying it “is moving along. It’s slow-moving, but it’s moving.” He also mentioned another TV show “that’s my favorite thing in all of this, that is hopefully getting made soon.

At least two characters from James Gunn’s Superman — which is now in theaters and officially launches the film side of the new Dcu — are being eyed to headline TV spinoffs.

The Superman movie stars David Corenswet (of TV’s The Politician and Lady in the Lake) as the titular Kal-El aka Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent, while Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) plays Daily Planet journo Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (The Great) fills the role of supervillain Lex Luthor.

Superman's review embargo doesn't lift until tomorrow but it seems anticipation for the first Dcu film from James Gunn has several media outlets willing to risk being banned from future advance screenings by Warner Bros.

Previously, The Daily Beast posted a review three days ago, calling the film an "overstuffed Saturday morning cartoon" that was "silly" and overpopulated by "two-dimensional heroes and villains."

There have been other reactions that have broken the embargo in the interim, but we now have our second full review and it's much more positive.

The new Dcu’s Clark Kent and Lex Luthor make their big screen debuts this Friday having the support of TV predecessors Tyler Hoechlin and Michael Rosenbaum.

The highly anticipated Superman (fka Superman: Legacy) film, written/directed by DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn, hits theaters July 11 and stars David Corenswet (of TV’s The Politician and Lady in the Lake) as the titular Kal-El aka Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent.

While in the comics, Hawkgirl is traditionally romantically linked to Hawkman, the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited cartoon introduced a relationship between Hawkgirl and Green Lantern John Stewart that had its fair share of shippers.

James Gunn, co-chair of DC Studios, recently revealed that he expects to read two different Batman scripts before the end of 2025.

One of those is likely The Batman Part II, written by Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, which was just completed. Gunn has said he hasn’t read it yet, but now that it’s finished, it’s safe to assume that’s one of the scripts he’s referring to. But what’s the second project?

Back in January 2023, Gunn announced The Brave and the Bold as part of the first wave of Dcu films under the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters banner. Andy Muschietti, director of The Flash, was confirmed to direct, but no screenwriter was publicly named.

In most comic book continuities, Nightwing gets his name from Superman. After parting ways with Batman and leaving his role as Robin behind, Dick Grayson turned to Superman for guidance.

During their conversation, Superman told him a story from Kryptonian folklore about a hero named Nightwing, a symbol of hope, transformation, and protection for the vulnerable. Moved by the legend and determined to become his own kind of hero, Dick embraced the name Nightwing as a way to honor that tale and step out of Batman’s shadow.

In Batman: The Animated Series and Superman: The Animated Series, Lex Luthor and the Joker first teamed up in the three-part 1997 episode titled "World's Finest."

In the crossover event, the story kicks off in Gotham City, where the Joker pulls off a heist involving a giant statue made of Kryptonite. After securing the radioactive prize, he makes his way to Metropolis with a plan in mind. There, he approaches Lex Luthor and proposes a deal: he’ll take down Superman if Luthor agrees to pay him a huge sum in return.

This leads Superman and Batman to inevitably cross paths and one-up each other by figuring out their respective secret identities. They team up and eventually stop Lex and the Joker, setting the stage for the later arrival of another fantastic animated series, Justice League.

Could something similar happen in the Dcu, where audiences are introduced to a reverse take on the World's Finest?...

Out of all the superheroes appearing in Superman, Michael Holt, aka Mister Terrific, might be the most intriguing. That's because he's a legacy character- the second person to take up the Mister Terrific mantle after Terry Sloane debuted as the character in the Golden Age.

Sloane, also known as the Man of 1,000 Talents, was a major figure in the Justice Society of America and the All-Star Squadron. That raises an interesting question: do these classic superhero teams already exist in James Gunn’s DC Universe?

So far, none of the promotional interviews for Superman have addressed whether Mister Terrific is a legacy character who follows in Sloane’s footsteps. That could be because it’s a plot point the film and these pre-release interviews want to avoid spoilers.

If you've been following Superman marketing and promotional materials for a lengthy amount of time, you'll likely be aware that in the upcoming film, Lex Luthor's company is not going by the traditional LexCorp. Instead, it's called LuthorCorp.

Speaking to Comicbook, director James Gunn stated that the decision was intentional and that it partially stems from the fact that he's a big Smallville fan.

Gunn stated, "I was taking lots of different stuff from comic books, TV shows and movies- and I'm a Smallville fan. It was LuthorCorp in Smallville. But it also let the door..first of all, most people don't name their corporations after their first name, so I believe it more, in terms of that. A newly released Superman clip showcases a tense and explosive confrontation between the Man of Steel and Lex Luthor.

Storming into Lex’s office, Superman blasts the double doors off their hinges and hurls the villain’s lavish desk aside with ease, demanding answers, as it's revealed that Spoiler: [Krypto] has been kidnapped. Despite the chaos, Lex stays calm and collected, casually sipping his coffee as if nothing’s amiss.

The scene is arguably the most impactful footage revealed so far and does a great job of selling the tone of the film. For fans still unsure, it’s well worth a look, though with the film’s July 11 release fast approaching, you might want to avoid any further clips to keep the experience fresh.

Esquire Philippines caught up with Superman director James Gunn as the film's press tour recently kicked off in Manila. Gunn fielded a number of questions that hopefully showcase that he was the right person to write and direct this new interpretation of the Big Blue Boy Scout.

On the topic of creating a Superman that isn't just perfect and powerful but also has flaws, Gunn stated, "Even though this is a very kind, very good Superman- we see that he can be a little bit stubborn and he can be a little impulsive with his actions. He's got a really, incredibly complex personality."

When asked if he was concerned about dropping the audience into a fully-formed fictional superhero world, Gunn explained that he didn't have any trepidation about it. At least not anymore, as he's screened the film for a number of people and no one expressed that they felt confused or lost.

Marketing for Superman is kicking into high gear as the film's X/Twitter account has shared footage from the press tour's first stop in Manila, the capital and second-most populous city of the Philippines.

It looks like it was a sun-up-to-sun-down celebration, and the fans definitely had a ton of energy and enthusiasm for the upcoming James Gunn-directed film.

Superman hits North American theaters on July 8th and the Philippines on the 9th.

Advance press screenings are slated for June 25. First reactions go live on July 7th, with Warner Bros. permitting full-blown reviews on July 8th. Prime Video is also holding special advanced screenings for Prime members on July 8.

That’s not something we’ve seen or ever will, but it’s a routine part of James Gunn’s reality as co-chair of DC Studios.

Despite the massive responsibility of overseeing the DC Universe reboot and directing Superman, Gunn still finds time to engage with fans on social media, frequently correcting misinformation.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he revealed that his main motivation for stepping in is to protect the filmmakers, actors, and creatives involved in these high-stakes projects.

“I’m trying to cut back,” Gunn admitted. “But every once in a while, a rumor spreads fast enough that it could actually affect someone personally—and that’s when I feel the need to step in.”

With three weeks left to go, James Gunn and DC Studios’ Superman is tracking to open in the $135 million range at the domestic box office.

If that forecast is right, Superman would land high up on the list of DC openings, although it would lag well behind the $166 million domestic debut of 2016’s Batman v Superman: The Dawn of Justice, not adjusted for inflation. At the same time, it would come in safely ahead of the last solo Superman movie, Zack Snyder’s 2013 film Man of Steel ($116 million).

Opinion, however, is sharply divided as to just how high Superman can fly.

Per Deadline, Nrg has Superman earning between $125 million and $145 million during its domestic debut. However, various distribution sources believe the real range for the Dcu blockbuster is closer to the $90 million and $125 million range. Regardless, Superman seems unlikely to beat the opening weekend of Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which made $146.5 million back in 2017. On the upside, Superman looks like it will become Gunn's second-best opening weekend, so long as it lands somewhere around that $125 million mark.

In the write-up, Safran discusses how Nicholas Hoult will redefine the role of Lex Luthor for a new generation when Superman hits theaters later this summer.

The final trailer for James Gunn’s Superman isn’t afraid to rattle a few teeth.

Warner Bros. released the latest trailer for the DC Studios movie that hits theaters July 11. Superman stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

The new film focuses on the titular superhero, who made his way to Earth from the planet Krypton and grapples with his powers while blending in as journalist Clark Kent.

This trailer shows Superman being warned to “stop messing around,” to which the superhero replies, “I’m not messing around. I’m doing important stuff.” The footage also shows a punch from Superman knocking out some teeth, which appear to hit the camera.

Additionally, the trailer includes Guy Gardner (played by Nathan Fillion) telling Superman menacingly, “Make a move, Big Blue.”

Superman’s release marks a pivotal and high-stakes moment for Warner Bros.

The long-awaited DC Comics movie is slated to premiere on July 11 this summer, and there are rumors about the runtime.

A Threads user asked Gunn if the Superman runtime of 2 hours and 9 minutes was correct, to which the filmmaker and DC Studios co-head replied, confirming it was accurate.

“Inclusive of credits/post credits the runtime is 2 hours 9 minutes,” Gunn confirmed.

Discussing the same topic of runtime, another user asked Gunn if it was true that Warner Bros. had forced him to make the film shorter.

James Gunn's Superman figures to be one of the biggest movies of the year and Hawkgirl actress Isabela Merced and Engineer actress Maria Gabriela de Faria are reflecting on their experiences at different points of the filming process.

For De Faria who portrays one of DC Comics' most powerful characters, the Engineer, she reflected on the physical nature of her role. It sounds like she'll have some intense fight scenes, although we haven't seen much of the character in any of the previously released footage.

Speaking to Remezcla, de Faria stated, "This experience was super challenging physically, but it was also very challenging emotionally. My character as The Engineer is a very physical character."

As for the Man of Steel himself, David Corenswet has expressed how much he’s loving every moment of stepping into the role of DC’s iconic big blue Boy Scout. Interestingly, he’s also admitted that he feels the real pressure falls more on James Gunn as the director and mastermind behind the Dcu.

To celebrate Superman Day, DC Studios has released an exciting and heartfelt new look at James Gunn's Superman. The behind-the-scenes video is filled with new footage and commentary from the cast and crew of the first DC Universe movie.

"Being a child, I loved the purity of Superman. It was a time when I was starting to understand what movies were," Gunn shared at the beginning of the video, as a couple of clips from the Christopher Reeve-led Superman are shown. Peter Safran, who co-heads DC Studios with Gunn, then opened up about the road to the new Superman, explaining that Gunn was initially unsure that he should be the one to bring the Man of Steel back to the big screen. "I had been trying to crack it for years," Gunn admitted in the video over top of new behind-the-scenes looks at Superman.
