Night of the Living Dead sequel from director Nikyatu Jusu is “currently in limbo”
Nikyatu Jusu
Three years ago, it was announced that Nikyatu Jusu, who had just made her feature directorial debut with the horror film Nanny, would be directing a sequel to George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead (watch it Here), with MGM acquiring the worldwide distribution rights and planning a theatrical release for the film. That was the last we heard of it… and now it has been confirmed that the project is “currently in limbo.”

This Night of the Living Dead sequel was coming to us from Romero’s ex-wife Christine Romero, the late George A. Romero’s Sanibel Films, Origin Story, Vertigo, and Westbrook Studios. Romero is the creative overseer on the project, producing alongside Village Roadshow’s Jillian Apfelbaum, Nic Gordon, and Tristen Tuckfeld, Origin Story’s Ryan Silbert, Vertigo’s Andrew Childs, Westbrook Studios’ Jon Mone and Ryan Shimazaki, and Sanibel Films’ Tina Romero, who...

Queens of the Dead Review: Slaying, Stumbling, and Surviving
Image
Just when you think the zombie genre has exhausted every possible permutation, a film like Queens of the Dead struts in, covered in glitter and gore, to prove you wrong. This is the feature debut from Tina Romero, and yes, that name carries weight. But while she works in the sandbox her father George A. Romero built, she is building a very different kind of castle.

This film trades bleak social dread for backstage bedlam, setting its story in a struggling drag club on the precipice of a make-or-break show. The curtain is about to rise when the world outside ends, trapping a motley crew of performers inside with their wits, their fabulousness, and an invading horde of the undead. It’s a comedy-forward horror movie that understands survival is a performance in itself.

‘Queens of the Dead’ Review: A Zombie Farce That Wears Its Bedazzled Heart on Its Sleeve
Image
Few films can coast on good intentions alone, but low-budget zombie romp “Queens of the Dead” comes close. Directed by Tina Romero, the delightful feature debut is a horror comedy chock-full of fun and meaningful ideas, most of which stop just short of fruition. Romero is notably the daughter of zombie movie progenitor George A. Romero (of “Night of the Living Dead” fame), and she channels her father’s decades-long fascination with undead ghouls as cinematic symbols for society at large. By filtering familiar hallmarks through a distinctly queer story set at a drag show gone awry, she channels the genre’s uglier, edgier leanings into a glamorous farce with a beating heart.

“Queens of the Dead” is the kind of movie that requires going with the flow — not by turning your brain off, but by keeping it especially sharp while sidelining expectations of refinement. Its aesthetic approach seldom lives...

Tribeca 2025 Review: Queens Of The Dead, A Next Gen Romero Spawns A Drag Zombie Winner
Image
A struggling drag club transforms into ground zero for a group of plucky survivors during a zombie infestation in Tina Romero’s fantastic debut feature, Queens of the Dead. Dre is desperate. Their drag club had booked one of New York’s hottest queens, Yasmine (Dominique Jackson), in the hopes of drumming some much needed business, but a last-minute cancelation puts them in a tight spot. The house queen, Ginsey (Andrew “Nina West” Levitt) and her catty crew of dancers/wannabes are left to pick up the pieces. That is, unless the prodigal queen Sam/Samoncé (Jaquel Spivey) is willing to return to the life after a panic attack sent them running toward a normal life as a nurse. Amidst the drama, a viral...

‘Queens of the Dead’ – New Images Preview Tina Romero’s “Big Gay Zombie Movie”
Image
Tina Romero, the daughter of late horror master George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead), is making her own mark on the zombie genre with Queens of the Dead, and Entertainment Weekly has provided us with some fresh images and insights this week.

Queens of the Dead premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival this month.

“The zombie apocalypse is such a rich sandbox to play in when it comes to social commentary. I can’t be my dad’s daughter without making an attempt at saying something with zombies,” Romero tells EW. “I did want this to be a film in which I am paying homage to the world and the monster he created, but I’m also introducing my own voice.”

Romero continues, “It’s very much not a film he would make, but it is using his vocabulary and is playing by his rules. As far as the queer element,...

Nina West Went From ‘Drag Race’ to a Piece of Zombie History

Nina West can thank a phone call from friend Zelda Williams for her biggest acting opportunity to date.

“Zelda Williams calls. ‘My friend has you on their vision board for this movie. Would you be Ok if I introduced you?’” recalls West, the drag queen who is also known as Andrew Levitt.

Their mutual friend was Tina Romero, a filmmaker and daughter of late zombie maestro George A. Romero, the revered Night of the Living Dead director.

The younger Romero wrote West a note, recalling how before her father’s death in 2017, she received his blessing on her own project, a movie called Queens of the Dead. The horror-comedy centers on drag queens and club kids battling the undead during an outbreak at a drag show in Brooklyn. Would West want to be a part of the movie?

'So Disrespectful': Simon Pegg Explains What's Wrong With Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead
Image
Shaun of the Dead star Simon Pegg has an issue with another major zombie movie that was also released 20 years ago. In 2004, director Zack Snyder released the James Gunn-penned Dawn of the Dead remake, a reimagining of the classic zombie movie by George A. Romero.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pegg shared how he really does not want to see Shaun of the Dead get rebooted. He explained how a reimagined version of the film wouldn't be able to recapture what the original one was, and that had him feeling leery about another filmmaker making a movie that used the same Shaun of the Dead name. He then addressed how Snyder's Dawn of the Dead bothers him, suggesting that it was "disrespectful" for that film to use the same title as Romero's 1978 classic.

'I Would Be Incensed': Shaun of the Dead Star Is Totally Against a Reboot
Image
A Shaun of the Dead reboot isn't impossible, but it's not something star Simon Pegg and director Edgar Wright want to see. Pegg, who starred as the titular character in the zombie comedy film, opened up on why he doesn't want a reboot to happen.

Pegg commented on the possibility in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He noted that Universal Pictures owns the rights to Shaun of the Dead, so a reboot could possibly be made whether he likes it or not. However, Pegg also said that if that happened, "Edgar [Wright] and I would be incensed." The actor went on to explain how Shaun of the Dead was such a personal project for both of them that it would tarnish what made the movie so special if it were to be reimagined. Pegg also said that he's hopeful that fans would push back on a possible reboot...

George A. Romero's Daughter to 'Take the Torch' With New Zombie Movie
Image
George A. Romero's legacy will continue with his daughter making more zombie films inspired by the work of her father. Called Queens of the Dead, the new film from Tina Romero will be paying homage while introducing the filmmaker's own unique take on the genre.

Tina Romero spoke about the project in a new intervie with Fangoria. She looked back at her father's legendary zombie films, including Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead. Not only did this movies spawn an all-new subgenre of horror, they served as allegories for real-life social issues of the era. Romero said that her upcoming film will take a similar approach, as this will keep the "Romero zombie alive" while adding something new to zombie horror.
