Walter Rojas left Pitalito and studied journalism at the Sabana University in Bogotá Colombia and for Film Director at the International Film and TV School in San Antonio de Los Baños, Cuba. His writer career started at earlier age at El Espectador. Later he wrote for Radio Caracol, Cromos Magazine and the Gabriel García Márquez's Youth Writers Desk in México. He studied also with American director Francis Ford Coppola, Italian director Guiseppe Ferrara, Chilean writer and director Raúl Ruiz, Peruvian writer Alfredo Bry ce Echenique and French player Jean Claude Carrière.

His mother left the family when he was five.
