Heart Like a Hand Grenade review – Green Day rock doc hits too many bum notes
This documentary of the pop-punk band lacks curiosity, with not enough insight into their music

Embedded with the pop-punks as they recorded their American Idiot opus, film-maker John Roecker soon fades into the furniture: the between-takes downtime is unrevealing, while sequences on the construction of Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and other songs, cut too early to polished live performances, before we can witness their craft. We get a passing sense of the band’s personalities – incorrigibly boyish, even as they head into fatherhood – yet there is nothing of substance on the music, or its notionally oppositional slant.

Green Day Prep Lost 'American Idiot' Doc 'Heart Like a Hand Grenade'
Billie Joe Armstrong, Tré Cool, Mike Dirnt, and Green Day
Green Day will finally release Heart Like a Hand Grenade, the "lost" documentary chronicling the making of their Bush-era protest album/rock opera, American Idiot, with a wide release scheduled for October 10th, Diy reports.

Shot by John Roecker over a period of nine months, the film marks the first time Green Day allowed cameras into the studio. Why Isn't a Gay Porn Star Documentary Available on Amazon?
John Roecker (director of the upcoming Green Day documentary Heart Like a Hand Grenade, and cult hits Live Freaky, Die Freaky and Svengali) set out to explore the world of the sex industry and wound up making frank, bold documentary Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Gay Porn Stars, *But Were Afraid to Ask! The seven episodes which aired on Here! TV featured some of the hottest names in the male sex industry, talking about the how and why of their careers. The actors discuss their past history as abused children, their drug use, their love lives off screen, their pasts and their futures. It's gritty and gnarly, moving. Out of 16 of the actors, two are now dead, and one, Harlow Cuadra, is in prison. Roecker told me, "I want these guys to be heard, I want to...

Wellspring gets 'Freaky' rights
Billie Joe Armstrong
A stop-motion-animated musical inspired by the Manson family crimes is about to hit the midnight-movie circuit. Wellspring said Thursday that it has acquired all North American rights to director John Roecker's Live Freaky! Die Freaky! which boasts a voice cast headed by Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day and Tim Armstrong of Rancid and Operation Ivy. Tim Armstrong's Hellcat Pictures produced the movie, its first project. Freaky tells the tale of a young man (voiced by Billie Joe Armstrong) in the year 3069 who discovers a copy of Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry's Helter Skelter, which described the murders committed in the '60s by Charles Manson and his followers. Treating the book as a biblical text and adopting Manson as a messiah, the young man preaches a better world through "music, murder and mayhem."...
