At the end of September, JoBlo Media and Octane Multimedia teamed up to launch a new YouTube channel named JoBlo TV, which hosts multiple feature films to watch for free throughout the week. The genres we’ll be focusing on at JoBlo TV are Action, Horror, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Thrillers – and the free movies we shared this week were packed with an action, along with a bit of drama and even a touch of the supernatural.

The movies were The City of Gold, Terra Nova, and The Rebels. Here’s some information on each of them:

An action adventure movie with a bit of the supernatural dropped in, The City of Gold was directed by Harry Locke IV from a script by Ronald A. Blum. Here’s the synopsis: An anguished media magnate, Jonathan Davenport, accompanies his estranged lover to the Peruvian Amazon in pursuit of a reclusive artist living in rebel occupation.

Here’s an indie horror film that was filmed entirely on the island of Oahu. Ordinarily the center of big-budget productions like Lost or Jurassic Park, you might be interested to know the Island State has its own thriving indie cinema scene. Dark Star Pictures is distributing Decade Of The Dead, which launches today on VOD. The zombie apocalypse hit ten years ago, and Rachel, Tweeter, and Ben have just barely hung on. They think they’ve finally reached sanctuary when they come across a secluded tropical island — surely the undead haven’t infected this place, right? Wrong…they soon discover the island is home to a deadly cult that worships zombies and follows in their practices (meaning they eat people). They should just get out of there, but when Rachel finds her sister alive and unwell as a High Priestess of the cult, things get complicated. Decade of the Dead stars Sean Patrick Thomas,...

The 2002 film, The Scorpion King, directed by Chuck Russell, depicts the journey of Mathayus as he attempts to overthrow the despotic warrior Memnon. The Scorpion King serves as a prequel to The Mummy Returns, and it helped explain the origin story of how Mathayus came to be the Scorpion King and the villain of the latter film. Luckily for fans of The Mummy Returns, The Scorpion King was able to bring back the same actor for the titular role as well as add other prominent actors to the cast list.

The Scorpion King received modest reviews from critics and currently holds a 41% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film did well enough with audiences, grossing $180.6 million on a $60 million budget, and it spawned several Scorpion King direct-to-video sequels. Along with the entertaining action sequences, much of the movie's success came from its actors' performances as fantastical ancient characters.

Exclusive: Lydia Peckham (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), Roimata Fox (Chief of War) and Branscombe Richmond (Renegade) have joined the cast of The Wrecking Crew, Amazon MGM Studios’ action comedy from Blue Beetle helmer Ángel Manuel Soto.

Details as to the trio’s roles are under wraps. As previously announced, Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa lead the ensemble, which also includes Claes Bang, Temuera Morrison, Jacob Batalon, Frankie Adams, Miyavi, Stephen Root, and Morena Baccarin.

Set to enter production in New Zealand in October, The Wrecking Crew centers on a pair of half-brothers — one, a loose-cannon cop (Momoa), and the other, a disciplined Navy Seal (Bautista). After 20-odd years of bad blood, the duo must work together to unravel the conspiracy behind their father’s murder in Hawaii.

Movie Review

Here we are offered an extremely irregular film, which at times comes across as a TV production, and at others surprises with good dialogues and photography. It combines simple and easy scenes with hackneyed plots that seem to have a failed ulterior motive, failed in the sense that they are diluted and disappear in what is a simple thriller, with a retro 90’s touch, maybe even 80’s (you decide).

Its strongpoint: John Travolta taking on the role as the kingpin, big kahuna in Hawaii. Let’s admit it,...

There aren’t many recognizable faces in “Finding ‘Ohana,” Netflix’s adorably entertaining reimagining of “The Goonies” set in Hawaii. Paying homage to adventure movies like “The Goonies,” “Dora and the Lost City of Gold” and “Tomb Raider” without blatantly mimeographing them, this family-friendly, character-forward feature from Netflix charms as well as entertains. Yet by the time the first hour has ended, a slight fatigue encroaches on the effervescent fun and it begins to lose its way.

A summer in rural O'ahu takes an exciting turn for two Brooklyn-raised siblings when an old journal pointing to long-lost treasure sets them on an epic adventure with new friends, and leads them to reconnect with their Hawaiian heritage. 'Ohana means "family", so the movie is essentially about "Finding Family" and reconnecting with her family and her roots on Hawaii. "What if he escape from a zoo, or something?" Lionsgate has released a trailer for Lena and Snowball, a charming lion cub drama based on a true story. This seems to be a cheesy American remake of the French film Mia and the White Lion, about a young woman who befriends a lion cub living in Africa. This one has a similar story. Lena tries to keep playful Snowball out of trouble, but the clumsy poachers who kidnapped the valuable cub, and the cruel trophy collector who paid for him, are desperate to get him back. That sounds like an entirely uninspired story. Melissa Collazo stars in this as Lena; she's joined by Robert Knepper, Wade Williams, Branscombe Richmond, Ansuman Bhagat, and Elliott Sancrant. Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center has launched Black Carpet Speaker Series, a free series providing Black filmmakers a platform to discuss their careers, influences, latest works, and filmmaking insights. Bherc has tapped powerhouse directors Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard) and Kasi Lemmons (Harriet) to host the first live virtual speaker series where they’ll be discussing the urgency to tell stories of black women and disrupting the status quo. Following the Black Carpet Speaker Series, which kicks off July 31, is Bherc’s annual Reel Black Men Film Festival that runs from August 1 – August 8. The fest spotlights shorts created by African-American male filmmakers. Reel Black Men provides an opportunity to screen these shorts and showcase the directors’ skills, talent and vision through film screenings while giving the audience a chance to view and discuss the artistry, passion, and sacrifice involved in the independent filmmaker process.

In today’s film news roundup, a spy thriller is set for a September start, “Permanent Green Light’ gets distribution, and “The Unhealer” wraps shooting.

Production Start

Producers are planning a September start for writer/director Daniel Lusko’s spy thriller “Quandary” about a CIA operative with Ptsd, Variety has learned exclusively.

Lusko joins forces with Doug McKay (“What to Expect When You’re Expecting”), Dennis Rice (“Charming”), Mark Kamine (“Bad Moms”), Tom Sanders, and Tommy Goodwin to produce the film, which will be shot in Hawaii and Los Angeles.

Lusko said the story is inspired by true events and addresses the psychological effects of post-traumatic stress disorder on American intelligence operatives. He also asserted the story has been vetted and endorsed by FBI officials and CIA operatives.

The story centers on a CIA operative who struggles to maintain his sanity after an explosion where he sees his wife and son killed.

Summertime is Showtime. The premium cable channel is teasing its upcoming summer slate.
