The City of Gold (2018)
At the end of September, JoBlo Media and Octane Multimedia teamed up to launch a new YouTube channel named JoBlo TV, which hosts multiple feature films to watch for free throughout the week. The genres we’ll be focusing on at JoBlo TV are Action, Horror, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Thrillers – and the free movies we shared this week were packed with an action, along with a bit of drama and even a touch of the supernatural.

The movies were The City of Gold, Terra Nova, and The Rebels. Here’s some information on each of them:

An action adventure movie with a bit of the supernatural dropped in, The City of Gold was directed by Harry Locke IV from a script by Ronald A. Blum. Here’s an indie horror film that was filmed entirely on the island of Oahu. Ordinarily the center of big-budget productions like Lost or Jurassic Park, you might be interested to know the Island State has its own thriving indie cinema scene. Dark Star Pictures is distributing Decade Of The Dead, which launches today on VOD. The zombie apocalypse hit ten years ago, and Rachel, Tweeter, and Ben have just barely hung on. They think they’ve finally reached sanctuary when they come across a secluded tropical island — surely the undead haven’t infected this place, right? Wrong…they soon discover the island is home to a deadly cult that worships zombies and follows in their practices (meaning they eat people). They should just get out of there, but when Rachel finds her sister alive and unwell as a High Priestess of the cult, things get complicated. Decade of the Dead stars Sean Patrick Thomas,...

The Scorpion King Cast & Character Guide
Image
The 2002 film, The Scorpion King, directed by Chuck Russell, depicts the journey of Mathayus as he attempts to overthrow the despotic warrior Memnon. The Scorpion King serves as a prequel to The Mummy Returns, and it helped explain the origin story of how Mathayus came to be the Scorpion King and the villain of the latter film. Luckily for fans of The Mummy Returns, The Scorpion King was able to bring back the same actor for the titular role as well as add other prominent actors to the cast list.

The Scorpion King received modest reviews from critics and currently holds a 41% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film did well enough with audiences, grossing $180.6 million on a $60 million budget, and it spawned several Scorpion King direct-to-video sequels. Along with the entertaining action sequences, much of the movie's success came from its actors' performances as fantastical ancient characters.

Lydia Peckham, Roimata Fox & Branscombe Richmond Join Amazon MGM’s Action Comedy ‘The Wrecking Crew’
Image
Exclusive: Lydia Peckham (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), Roimata Fox (Chief of War) and Branscombe Richmond (Renegade) have joined the cast of The Wrecking Crew, Amazon MGM Studios’ action comedy from Blue Beetle helmer Ángel Manuel Soto.

Details as to the trio’s roles are under wraps. As previously announced, Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa lead the ensemble, which also includes Claes Bang, Temuera Morrison, Jacob Batalon, Frankie Adams, Miyavi, Stephen Root, and Morena Baccarin.

Set to enter production in New Zealand in October, The Wrecking Crew centers on a pair of half-brothers — one, a loose-cannon cop (Momoa), and the other, a disciplined Navy Seal (Bautista). After 20-odd years of bad blood, the duo must work together to unravel the conspiracy behind their father’s murder in Hawaii.

After seeing Bautista and Momoa sell MGM on a pitch following a four-bidder battle in the fall of 2021, as we were first to report,...

Paradise City (2022) – Movie Review: Willis Is Back. Yes, He Is.
Image
Paradise City is a movie starring Bruce Willis, John Travolta and Stephen Dorff. It is directed by Chuck Russell.

A run-of-the-mill thriller that funnily enough, counts on some sequences and scenes that barely saves it from being a complete fiasco.

Premise

The renegade bounty hunter, Ryan Swan, has to pave his way into the Hawaiian criminal underworld to avenge his father’s murder.

Movie Review

Here we are offered an extremely irregular film, which at times comes across as a TV production, and at others surprises with good dialogues and photography. It combines simple and easy scenes with hackneyed plots that seem to have a failed ulterior motive, failed in the sense that they are diluted and disappear in what is a simple thriller, with a retro 90’s touch, maybe even 80’s (you decide).

Its strongpoint: John Travolta taking on the role as the kingpin, big kahuna in Hawaii. Let’s admit it,...

‘The Unhealer’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Elijah Nelson, Lance Henriksen, Natasha Henstridge, Adam Beach, Chris Browning, Branscombe Richmond | Written by J. Shawn Harris, Kevin E. Moore | Directed by Martin Guigui

In the past I’ve often talked about how I spent my teenage years basically living in the local video shop, renting title after title – mainly from the pound a week section. Now that particular section of my local video store consisted mainly of older titles that the majority of people weren’t renting any more, most of which were from the late 80s/early 90s. So I had a plethora of films that many now consider ‘classics’ to watch… I say this not to brag but to give some context to why I adore The Unhealer so much… It feels like it stepped directly out of that era of filmmaking. In the best way possible.

‘Finding ‘Ohana’: Netflix’s Reimagined Take on ‘The Goonies’ in Hawaii Soars with Authentic Casting
Image
There aren’t many recognizable faces in “Finding ‘Ohana,” Netflix’s adorably entertaining reimagining of “The Goonies” set in Hawaii. Though Chris Parnell and Marc Evan Jackson jazz up some very funny “Drunk History”-inspired scenes, the speaking roles include Branscombe Richmond, a veteran Hawaiian actor who played owner of the bar where Jason Segel sings his Dracula musical in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” There’s also Ke Huy Quan, harder to recognize since his 20-year retirement from acting, in a supporting role. Quan was a childhood hero for many Asian American kids, who first saw themselves onscreen in his performances in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and of course, “The Goonies.”

One of those kids was Jude Weng, now a prolific director on beloved TV comedies “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “The Good Place,” and “Fresh Off the Boat,” making her splashy feature debut with “Finding ‘Ohana.” (The film reached the...

‘Finding ‘Ohana’ Review: A ‘Goonies’-Inspired Adventure for the Geocaching Generation
Image
Director Jude Weng’s “Finding ‘Ohana” starts on a good note and continues that feeling through most of its story, which focuses on a tween girl and her family searching for buried treasure while reconnecting with each other and their Hawaiian heritage. Paying homage to adventure movies like “The Goonies,” “Dora and the Lost City of Gold” and “Tomb Raider” without blatantly mimeographing them, this family-friendly, character-forward feature from Netflix charms as well as entertains. Yet by the time the first hour has ended, a slight fatigue encroaches on the effervescent fun and it begins to lose its way.

After winning a competition that involves a high-intensity race around the streets of New York City, 12-year-old Brooklynite Pilialoha “Pili” Kawena (Kea Peahu) expects to cash in her prize by spending a perfect summer vacation at a geocache camp in the Catskills. But those dreams are dashed when her semi-estranged Hawaiian...

Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, and Ke Huy Quan in Les Goonies (1985)
Official Trailer for Netlix's Hawaiian Adventure Film 'Finding Ohana'
Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, and Ke Huy Quan in Les Goonies (1985)
"This is it! This is where the coin wanted us to go." Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for a teenage adventure movie titled Finding 'Ohana, set on Hawaii's island of Oahu. This kind of looks like a Hawaiian remake of The Goonies, with over-saturated sets and mesmerizing pirate-treasure locations. A summer in rural O'ahu takes an exciting turn for two Brooklyn-raised siblings when an old journal pointing to long-lost treasure sets them on an epic adventure with new friends, and leads them to reconnect with their Hawaiian heritage. 'Ohana means "family", so the movie is essentially about "Finding Family" and reconnecting with her family and her roots on Hawaii. The authentic full cast features Kea Peahu as the youngster Pili, Alex Aiono, Lindsay Watson, Owen Vaccaro, with Kelly Hu, Branscombe Richmond, Ke Huy Quan, Brad Kalilimoku, and Chris Parnell. Looks super fun! Plus, who doesn't love spending time on Hawaii?...

Thor and Daniah De Villiers in Mia et le Lion Blanc (2018)
Trailer for Lion Cub Movie 'Lena and Snowball' with Melissa Collazo
Thor and Daniah De Villiers in Mia et le Lion Blanc (2018)
"What if he escape from a zoo, or something?" Lionsgate has released a trailer for Lena and Snowball, a charming lion cub drama based on a true story. This seems to be a cheesy American remake of the French film Mia and the White Lion, about a young woman who befriends a lion cub living in Africa. This one has a similar story. Lena tries to keep playful Snowball out of trouble, but the clumsy poachers who kidnapped the valuable cub, and the cruel trophy collector who paid for him, are desperate to get him back. That sounds like an entirely uninspired story. Melissa Collazo stars in this as Lena; she's joined by Robert Knepper, Wade Williams, Branscombe Richmond, Ansuman Bhagat, and Elliott Sancrant. This looks way too much like it's trying to capitalize on the "Tiger King" buzz, and retell a story in a more cheesy way than actually...

Roadies: Will You Stay With the Band?
Almost Famous auteur Cameron Crowe this Sunday invited you to go on tour with the Roadies for the Staton-House Band. Will you stick around for upcoming dates?

In quick (and shamelessly Showtime-y) fashion, Roadies first introduces us to tour manager Bill (played by Luke Wilson) as he unwittingly beds a bigwig promoter’s (very) young daughter — which is par for the course for the divorcé, production manager Shelli (Carla Gugino) later points out. The premiere revolves around the Staton-House Band’s tour stop in New Orleans, where we next meet Kelly Ann (Imogen Poots), an electrician on the cusp of...

Riotous First Trailer For Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates Lands
