2021 Emmy awards nominations ballot: See all 41 Best TV Movie contenders from ‘As Luck Would Have It’ to ‘Wendy Williams: The Movie’
Image
The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 41 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 13; last year only 28 TV movies were submitted.

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 28 to cast their 2021 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017 that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Anna Paquin, Ryan Kwanten, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, Nelsan Ellis, and Rutina Wesley in True Blood (2008)
The end is nigh for Sookie (Anna Paquin) and the rest of our favorite Bon Temps residents as HBO draws True Blood to a close with Season 7. We have the full episode recap detailing all the thrills and drama from last night, along with a first look at next week's new episode "Death is Not the End", which airs Sunday July 13.

'True Blood' Recap: Sarah Newlin Returns, Rip Alcide
Alicide died at the hands of the Bon Temps vigilantes and Pam convinced Eric to go after Sarah Newlin with her in True Blood’s “Fire in the Hole.”

Sookie And Bill Try To Track Hep-v Vamps

In Bon Temps, Sookie (Anna Paquin) put her master plan with Bill (Stephen Moyer) in motion: she was going to drink his blood (after last season’s transfusion, the blood she already had in her system is no longer adequate to alert Bill of her being in danger), and then sit in the woods as bait for the Hep-v vamps. Sookie would allow herself to be taken, just like the others, and Bill would then be able to locate them and rescue Sookie, Arlene (Carrie Preston), Holly (Lauren Bowles) and Nicole (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) from becoming Hep-v vamp dinner.

Bill isn’t all too thrilled with the plan, but he uses the time to...

'True Blood' Recap: Eric Returns, Bon Temps Turns Against Sam And Andy
Sookie, Jason, Alcide, Andy and Sam took a road trip to learn more about the Hep-v vampires while Arlene struggled for a way out of Fangtasia in True Blood's "I Found You."

True Blood "I Found You" Recap

The episode began with Jason (Ryan Kwanten) having a sexy dream about vampire Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) – a side effect of having drunk Eric’s blood last season. Just as things start getting truly steamy, Jason wakes up with a jolt in a church.

Outside the church, Sookie (Anna Paquin) suggests to Andy (Chris Bauer) that they track where the Hep-v infected vamps came from by investigating the dead girl Sookie stumbled upon in the woods the other night. Andy, desperate for a lead to find Holly (Lauren Bowles), agrees, and tells Sookie and Alcide (Joe Manganiello) to meet him at the station. As for everybody else, Sam (Sam Trammell) encourages them...

Is a True Blood Musical in the Works?
Remember back in January when rumors of a possible "True Blood" movie were floating about? Well, grab your dancing shoes and get ready to do the Bon Temps Boogaloo because it looks like we might be getting a musical instead!

Per the AP, at the "True Blood" season premiere this past Tuesday night in Hollywood, composer Nathan Barr, who has written the instrumental scores for the series' entire seven seasons, said that True Blood: The Musical is indeed in the works.

"This was something that I pitched to HBO and [series creator] Alan Ball," said Barr, adding that the musical will revolve around protagonist, telepath, and waitress Sookie Stackhouse, portrayed in the HBO series by Anna Paquin. But, Barr added, after seven seasons of twists, turns, and characters for Sookie, it's proven a challenge to trim the saga down.

"I think we're really going to try to return to the roots of the show,...

DVD Review: Bereavement
Bereavement

Stars: Alexandra Daddario, Spencer List, Brett Rickaby, Michael Biehn, Kathryn Meisle, John Savage, Chase Pechacek | Written and Directed by Stevan Mena

What makes somebody evil? Is it just in their nature to be that person, to have the ability to harm others without remorse or is it their environment that builds the monster inside. This is the well-known argument of nature vs. nurture and Bereavement is a film that pushes for the belief that its nurture that creates the monster, that the parent is to blame.

Bereavement is actually the prequel to a movie called Malevolence, looking at the tale of Martin Bristol. In Bereavement we see him as a six year old boy with a rare disease; he lacks the ability to feel pain. When he is kidnapped by a serial killer he is taught that torturing and killing is ok because pain is not felt, which of course he understands.

The actor’s responsible for a number of particularly chilling characters including The Crazies‘ Bill Farnum and Bereavement‘s Graham Sutter, but based on the new teaser for CarnieVille, Bonzo might give both a run for their money. When a neighbor murders his wife dressed as a clown and a young Corey catches it all, she’s left with an intense case of coulrophobia (fear of clowns). Years later, Corey’s boyfriend and his friends decide it’s time for her to overcome the fear and take her to a local carnival. Well, if the gang runs into Rickaby’s Bonzo at this carnival, I’d like to...

Jesse's Top 5 Horror Films of 2011
by Jesse Miller, MoreHorror.com

2011 was somewhat of a quiet year for the horror genre and me and I still haven’t seen everything I would’ve liked to – but so far, here’s the top 5 horror films of 2011 that made quite an impression on me.

5. Final Destination 5

Let’s face it, they never meant The Final Destination to be the last one.

After all, you really can’t stop death, can you? – Haven’t these film makers learnt anything from their characters?

But seriously, Final Destination 5 was a return to form for the series, after the drab and dreary last two installments. Tony Todd’s return was a welcomed one and the writers threw in this interesting little twist to shake up the familiar formula.

Not all of it worked but damn if it wasn’t tense as all hell – and with one of the year’s best horror soundtracks,...

Bereavement

Year:  2010Director:  Stevan MenaCast:  Michael Beihn, Alexandra Daddario, Brett Rickaby, Spencer List, John Savage

Six year old Martin Bristol is abducted from his yard by psychopath Graham Sutter, who has a penchant for hanging women in his basement and brutally butchering them.  He keeps Martin as a protege of sorts, exposing him to the slaughters and eventually teaching him what it takes to murder.  When Allison moves in with her uncle who happens to reside next door to Sutter's slaughterhouse, her curiosity about the creepy neighboring property gets the best of her, resulting in a blood soaked climax.

The long-awaited prequel to 2004's Malevolence, a fabulous homage to Halloween and Friday the 13th and easily one of the best slasher films of the last decade, extremely high expectations were had going into Bereavement.  Director Mena proved to have a real talent for creating Carpenter-like tension and suspense with Malevolence, but...

Bereavement (Review)
2011 - 107 mins. - Rated Rd: Stevan Mena

C: Alexandra Daddario, Nolan Funk, Michael Biehn, John Savage, Spencer List, Peyton List, Brett Rickaby

Prequel to Malevolence detailing how a serial killer came to be and his earlier escapeds as a child.

Dreary prequel is competently acted, but Bereavement forgets one of the most important things when it comes to making a good horror film – a compelling storyline! Bereavement just drags along from one scene to the next without a sense of urgency or immediacy as the characters are either – A.) tortured B.) feel sad about their home life situation C.) act bonkers D.) or stand alone in complete silence. The final outcome of Bereavement is a given, so there isn’t much suspense as to what is going to happen at the end. Key horror sequences lack the impact that it could have had, due to poor staging, setup. Malevolence was...

Malevolence (2003)
Exclusive: Brett Rickaby On Being a Psychopath in 'Bereavement'
Malevolence (2003)
A follow-up to Stevan Mena's 2004 directorial debut Malevolence, Bereavement is actually a prequel. In it, we get a glimpse at how Martin became the depraved killer he was in Malevolence. Brett Rickaby plays Graham Sutter, the man who kidnapped young Martin. We spoke to Rickaby about how he handles such a dark role (he promises he isn't Method) and Sutter's own tortured childhood. Bereavement is available on DVD and Blu-Ray today. How did this role come about? What about you says, "I would make a good psychopath?" I have an empathy for people who are not normal. Even when I was in school, I was always drawn to more "character roles" than the leading men roles. And back then,...

Exclusive Interview: Writer/Director Stevan Mena Talks Bereavement, Trilogy Plans, Real-Life Serial Killer Joel Rifkin and More!
In 2005 up-and-coming writer/director Stevan Mena set the indie horror world ablaze with his feature film debut, Malevolence, which introduced us to the twisted world of serial killer Martin Bristol, who made a living of capturing and torturing innocent people. For Bereavement, the prequel and second film in the filmmaker's planned trilogy, Mena takes us back to where it all began.

For Martin (Spencer List) that would be the day he was kidnapped by deranged sociopath Graham Sutter (Brett Rickaby) and taken back to Sutter's farm, where the youngster would be groomed over the next five years and molded into a killing machine just like his captor.

Last week Dread Central had the opportunity to talk exclusively with Mena regarding his experiences making Bereavement after assembling a top-notch cast including the aforementioned Rickaby and List as well as Michael Biehn, John Savage and Alexandra Daddario. The writer/director also discussed...

Brett Rickaby
Interview: Bereavement's Brett Rickaby
Brett Rickaby
Brett Rickaby has made quite the name for himself in the horror genre over the past year. No, he didn’t have a lead role in The Crazies, but thanks to a particularly disturbing performance, he practically wound up becoming the face of the film. Still, that was only Rickaby scratching the surface of his potential because it’s in Stevan Mena’s Bereavement that the actor really gets the opportunity to show what he’s capable of and, boy, does he seize the opportunity. In 2005′s Malevolence, Mena introduced us to Martin Bristol, a six-year-old boy who was snatched up and emerges as a ruthless killer years later. What happens during that time...

Exclusive Interview: Director Stevan Mena talks Bereavement
I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Stevan Mena, the director, writer, and producer of Bereavement. This is the second film in the Malevolence trilogy, with his previous efforts including Malevolence (2004) and Brutal Massacre: A Comedy (2007).

During our interview, Stevan and I got to chat about the actors in the Bereavement, plans for the third film in the trilogy, and a bit about Mena beyond the limelight.

**Spoiler Warning: This interview discusses elements of Malevolence that would be considered spoilers to those that have not seen the film. **

Acting:

For anyone who has seen Malevolence, you probably expect that Bereavement would follow suit in brutality and anguish. While Bereavement continues to pack the ferocious nature seen in Malevolence, one thing it adds to the mix is character growth. Not only does the viewer get more insight into the enigma that is Martin Bristol, but we actually have deeper connections between the characters in general.

Exclusive Interview: Actor Brett Rickaby Talks Bereavement and More!
In 2005, writer/director Stevan Mena introduced genre fans to the twisted world of serial killer Martin Bristol in his breakout indie horror flick called Malevolence which was the middle part of a trilogy of films surrounding the serial killer as envisioned by storyteller Mena.

Now, the indie horror filmmaking maverick is back with his follow-up to Malevolence called Bereavement (review here), a prequel that introduces us to Martin's world soon after he was kidnapped at age six by psychotic recluse Graham Sutter, who is not only a kidnapper but a serial killer that tortures and kills teenage girls on his pig farm in the middle of nowhere.

Graham raises the young boy to be more like him- by teaching Martin (who suffers from Cipa- a condition that makes it impossible for the youngster to feel any sort of pain) about suffering while Sutter forces the young boy to watch him...
