Michael C. Hall in Dexter (2006)
Dexter: Season Nine; Showtime Show Revived for Limited Series
Michael C. Hall in Dexter (2006)
Apparently, we haven't seen the last of serial killer Dexter Morgan. Showtime has announced that the Dexter TV series will return for a "limited series" of 10 episodes. Star Michael C. Hall will return, as will the showrunner of the first four seasons, Clyde Phillips. Phillips and Hall will executive produce the limited series along with John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, Bill Carraro, and Scott Reynolds. Production is scheduled to begin in 2021 with an expected fall premiere.

"Dexter is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and for Showtime, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago," said Showtime Entertainment President Gary Levine. "We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. Well, I am...

Michael C. Hall in Dexter (2006)
‘Dexter’ Limited Series Revival Set at Showtime With Michael C Hall
Michael C. Hall in Dexter (2006)
Showtime is bringing back everyone’s favorite serial killer-turned-lumberjack. The pay cable network ordered a 10-episode limited series revival of “Dexter” with Michael C. Hall reprising his role as Dexter Morgan.

Clyde Phillips is returning as showrunner for the 10-episode limited run that is tentatively scheduled to premiere next fall. Phillips ran the show through its first four, and much more celebrated, seasons when the series was routinely nominated for Emmy awards, including Best Drama. “Dexter” cycled through showrunners after Phillips’ departure.

“Dexter” ran for eight seasons in total, though it has been panned for its series finale that ended with Michael C. Hall’s serial killer living out a life in solitude as a lumberjack, following the death of his sister, Debra (Jennifer Carpenter). Phillips revealed later on that he initially had a much different idea for the show’s ending.

The series was initially based on Jeff Lindsey’s novel,...

‘Dexter’: Showtime Revives Serial Killer Drama As Limited Series, Michael C. Hall & Clyde Phillips Return
Image
Dexter is back to his blood-splattering ways after Showtime ordered a new limited-series revival of the long-running serial-killer drama.

Michael C. Hall, who starred as the title character in the 2006-13 series, is back along with showrunner Clyde Phillips. The premium cable network has handed the series a 10-part run that is set to go into production in early 2021 with a tentative premiere date of fall 2021.

The original followed Dexter Morgan, who was a complicated and conflicted blood-spatter expert for the Miami Police Department but moonlighted as a serial killer.

Gary Levine, Co-President of Entertainment at Showtime, said that the network was only willing to revisit the “unique” character if they could find a creative take that was “worthy,” and they have “found it”.

[Spoiler Alert.] There are no details as to the whereabouts of Hall’s Dexter in the reboot, but the finale of Season 8 saw Dexter having faked his death...

‘Dexter’ Limited Series Revival Ordered at Showtime
Image
Sharpen your knives, “Dexter” fans. Showtime has ordered a limited series revival of the beloved serial killer drama with Michael C. Hall set to return.

The premium cabler has ordered 10 episodes, with production set to begin in 2021 for a fall debut. Former series showrunner Clyde Phillips is also set to return. Much like Dexter’s many victims, plot details for the series are being kept under wraps.

“’Dexter’ is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and for Showtime, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago,” said Gary Levine, co-president of entertainment for Showtime. “We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot...

Brittany Snow and Dave Bautista in Bushwick (2017)
'Bushwick' Directors Sign With UTA, Set Next Film 'Robbery 101' (Exclusive)
Brittany Snow and Dave Bautista in Bushwick (2017)
Directing team Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, who most recently helmed the action-thriller Bushwick which premiered at Sundance, have signed with UTA.

The visceral action film, which is slated for a theatrical release this summer, follows a Texas military force invading a Brooklyn neighborhood, home to Lucy (Brittany Snow) and Stupe (Dave Bautista). THR's review out of Sundance said: "What distinguishes Bushwick from your standard-issue, boneheaded video game is its cheeky cerebral wit."

In addition, the duo is currently starting to package their next film, Robbery 101, written by Scott Reynolds and produced by Nick Moceri. The film...

Tiff’s 25 Years of Midnight Madness: Best of the Fest #2
Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Midnight Madness: Toronto Film Festival's True Spirit
In September 1997, my first year covering the Toronto Film Festival as an earnest young accredited journalist, I wrote the following: "I'm not sure how many years it has been going on, but one of the most enjoyable things that I've discovered at this year's festival are the 'Midnight Madness' screenings. The programmers have amassed an eclectic, diverse program ... this is the true spirit of the festival."

What I hadn't quite caught onto was that Midnight Madness, the Tiff showcase for the weird and the wonderful, had been going on for a decade by that point. Originally programmed by Noah Cowan (who would eventually become co-director of the Fest and is now the Artistic Director for Tiff's Bell Lightbox Theatre), this internationally renowned subsection of Tiff's film selection has grown under the steady hand of Colin Geddes, who started that same year I first discovered the programme's magic.

On this,...

'Psych': Joey McIntyre! Plus, The Catch, Tap Man and the preying Mantis
What a delightful episode of "Psych." The case of the week is a rogue vigilante who calls himself The Mantis, going around town and thwarting drug busts of a local cartel. He seems to be a hero and Juliet certainly has some stars in her eyes.

But it all turns out to be a sham - the mild-mannered reporter whose alter-ego is The Mantis is actually taking the drug money from the cartel after he stops them. Naughty, naughty. Naturally, Shawn and Gus ... excuse us, The Catch and Tap Man, manage to figure it all out and bring him down.

What we loved:

Joey McIntyre as Officer Scott Reynolds. The 10-year-old girl in us squeed every time he was on screen. Please bring him back as a recurring character. We cried with laughter when Gus started tap dancing as Tap Man. Awesome. The comic book opening credits, segues to commercial...

Brendan Fraser To Play William Tell... In 3D
While I'm fairly certain that everybody knows about William Tell shooting an apple off of his son's head, I sometimes wonder if people are aware of the full story. Actually fairly dark, the full tale is filled with political oppression, rebellion, vengeance and murder. It's actually fairly compelling, but don't tell Brendan Fraser that. That would mean he just signed up for a project with potential and lord knows that he can't have that. A press released issued by Arclight Films (via Coming Soon) has announced that Fraser has been cast as the lead in William Tell: 3D, a new "historical family action adventure." Scheduled to shoot this fall in Europe, the film's script was written by Scott Reynolds and will be directed by Nick Hurran (The Prisoner, Doctor Who). Anna Paquin is also in talks for an unspecified role. Said producer Todd Moyer of Fraser's casting, "There is no...

Brendan Fraser Starring in ‘William Tell 3D’ and Historical Drama ‘Four Kings’
Brendan Fraser
If it feels like Brendan Fraser is suddenly everywhere, that's because he is. After being relatively low-profile for a couple years he is about to be in several films: he's shooting the Belfast-based heist comedy Whole Lotta Sole right now, will soon shoot Gimme Shelter (playing against type as a less than accepting father) and now has two new roles. He'll be in the 'sweeping epic historical drama' Four Kings (not a sequel to Three Kings, fortunately) that will shoot late this summer in Toronto with Damien Lee directing. And he'll play the title role in William Tell 3D (ok, not so exciting) from director Nick Hurran, a Doctor Who vet. More info on both new films is after the break. Deadline [1] broke word of Four Kings yesterday, saying that it will be "set against the French and Indian War that essentially divided North America," with Brendan Fraser playing " Colonel Lord Francis Nicholson,...

Cold Spots: Great Bend Tunnel
Talcott, West Virginia - Through a wall of granite hammer strikes ring out, echoing off stone. Grunts of effort can be heard, and when people reach the end of the tunnel, they feel pain. No matter who they are, they've heard the story. To ignore such a tale would be to ignore one of the greatest heroes of the United States. And while, to many, his tale is one tall enough to be considered mere folklore, to others his is a story of triumph of the human spirit, and such is the stuff of which legends are made.

When I was a kid, we had to learn folklore in school. Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill joined alongside real heroes like Davey Crockett and Buffalo Bill Cody to paint the picture of a young land where anything could, and often did, happen. Among those stories was one that we could never...

Jim Caviezel To Shoot For Apples In ‘William Tell: The Legend’
The man who once played Jesus Christ is about to step into the shoes of a completely different kind of legendary historical figure. Jim Caviezel will fill the starring role in Flagship Films’ “William Tell: The Legend,” according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter. The “fact-based retelling of the medieval legend” will follow Caviezel’s Tell as he challenges the brutal rule of Hermann Gessler, to be played by Til Schweiger. The story comes from a script by Scott Reynolds and Nick Hurran; Hurran will also direct.

William Tell is commonly known as the guy who shot an apple off his son’s head with a crossbow. As the legend goes, the expert marksman was arrested by agents of Gessler for refusing to bow in the monarch’s name. Tell was then offered a chance at freedom, provided he could shot an apple off of his son’s head with a crossbow.

New Zealand & South Korea Team for Soul Mate
Does anyone out there remember a little New Zealand horror film called The Ugly? It was one of those low-key flicks that came around direct to DVD here in the States just over a decade ago and got a good amount of buzz for its time.

Well, if you have fond memories of it, The Ugly’s director, Scott Reynolds, is getting ready to make his first film since 2001, which also happens to be the first in a new South Korea/New Zealand co-production treaty.

THR reports that Reynolds is on board to direct Soul Mate, a horror film about love and vengeful ghosts, which sounds about as South Korean as one could ask for. The script comes from Nick Ward, whose recent credits include another solid flick from New Zealand, The Ferryman (review), and Weta Workshop will be handling the visual effects on Soul Mate.

So far Korean actress...
