    German production designer. He first worked at the Vilnius Army Theatre in 1916, where he joined the team of art directors Hermann Warm and Walter Röhrig. In 1919, he entered films as a set painter, later advancing to production design. In collaboration with Warm and Röhrig, he worked on the design for Fritz Lang's classic 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)_. He also had a brief spell in Hollywood, designing an alpine village in the Californian desert for Ernst Lubitsch's L'abîme (1929).
