Harry Reems at an event for Inside Deep Throat (2005)

Trivia

Harry Reems

Edit
  • After his porn career waned and he couldn't find work, he became a serious alcoholic who ended up in Los Angeles, begged on the streets and often slept in dumpsters. He briefly considered suicide, but by 1989 he was living in Park City, UT, and used a 12-step program to stop drinking. He even converted to Christianity, obtained a real estate license and married Jeanne Sterret.
  • Was prosecuted by the federal government in 1976 on federal charges of conspiracy to distribute obscenity across state lines. He was convicted, but the conviction was overturned on appeal one year later. He received public support from a number of Hollywood celebrities during his trials, including Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty.
  • Was offered the role of Coach Calhoun in Grease (1978), but producers replaced him with Sid Caesar at the last moment for fear of his adult movie notoriety.
  • He studied dentistry for a year at the University of Pittsburgh until his number came up for the Vietnam draft and enlisted in the Marine Corps. He was home on leave and came down with pneumonia when his unit was deployed to Vietnam. His father became terminally ill and he applied for a hardship transfer and never got sent overseas. He said that 87% of his unit were wounded or died in Vietnam.
  • Left the adult film business in the late 1980s and eventually married a deeply religious woman. In interviews he said his past work was in the past, but it was not anything he was ashamed to have done.
  • The computer game Leisure Suit Larry Goes Looking for Love (In Several Wrong Places) (1988) references Reems in the name of one of the hair salons: "Hairy Reams."
  • He had sex with Traci Lords in Those Young Girls (1984), who was 16 at the time.
