Chet Hanks Recreates Forrest Gump Scenes with Tom Hanks in New Music Video: Watch
Image
Chet Hanks is stepping into his father’s shoes in a new music video, recreating several scenes from Forrest Gump, dressing as the character, and even inviting Tom Hanks for a cameo.

Like many men before him, Chet Hanks has made the pivot from hip-hop to country music, and he’s teamed up with singer-songwriter Drew Arthur for the new duo Something Out West. They made their debut with “Leaving Hollywood” last month, and now, they’re back with the country rock track “You Better Run.”

Though the song doesn’t reference the 1994 film beyond the playful title, the music video goes full Forrest Gump parody, with Hanks donning the character’s blue and grey suit and reprising the iconic bench scene from the movie. Hanks also appears on a boat inspired by Gump’s shrimping vessel and recreates the film’s “run across America” sequence.

Around the minute-and-a-half mark,...

Brian Wilson Sings Heartwarming Posthumous Duet with Glen Campbell on “Strong”: Stream
Image
Brian Wilson has joined forces with the late Glen Campbell for a posthumous duet of Campbell’s song, “Strong.”

“Strong (with Brian Wilson)” is the latest entry in the upcoming duet collection Glen Campbell Duets — Ghost on the Canvas Sessions, which is out everywhere on April 19th. Originally appearing on Campbell’s 2011 “farewell” album Ghost on the Canvas, “Strong” is a warm, string-laden track that describes Campbell’s onset of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Campbell vows to his wife to maintain his resilience in the face of the disease, confessing, “All I want to be for you is strong.” All the while, signature harmonies from Wilson add a dreamy, hopeful feel, and Wilson shares Campbell’s verses with conviction and clarity. Listen to the song below.

Of the posthumous collaboration, Brian Wilson said in a statement, “Glen was a great singer and a great guy. Our intention in doing ‘Strong’ was...

Hope Sandoval Sings Posthumous Duet with Glen Campbell on New Version of “The Long Walk Home”: Stream
Image
A posthumous duet between Hope Sandoval and Glen Campbell that reimagines his song “The Long Walk Home” has been released as the latest preview of the upcoming album Glen Campbell Duets – Ghost on the Canvas Sessions. Stream it below.

On the new version of “The Long Walk Home,” the Mazzy Star singer’s airy vocals pair seamlessly with Campbell’s, bringing extra melancholy to the song — which was written about the late country singer’s battle with Alzheimer’s. “I know I’ll never be the same again/ I hope I’ll still remember you,” they sing together. “Above it all I know our love will transcend/ On my long walk home.”

In a press statement, producer and co-writer Julian Raymond revealed how Sandoval inspired Campbell’s music: “Glen and I listened to a couple of different Mazzy Star songs while we were preparing to record the Meet Glen Campbell...

Glen Campbell Sings With Eric Church, Dolly Parton, Elton John on New Duets Album
Image
As the tenth anniversary of Glen Campbell’s Ghost on the Canvas was approaching, Dave Kaplan —whose Surfdog Records released the haunting album in 2011 — was pondering ways to honor it. A late-period landmark for Campbell, who died in 2017 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Ghost on the Canvas found the venerable pop-country singer and guitarist covering songs by a new generation of writers — alt-rock types like Paul Westerberg, Guided By Voices’ Robert Pollard, Jakob Dylan, and Teddy Thompson. The album ranked Number 88 on Rolling Stone‘s list of...

Brian Setzer Announces New Album The Devil Always Collects, 2023 Tour Dates
Image
Brian Setzer has a new solo album coming out on September 15th called The Devil Always Collects. Ahead of its release, the Stray Cats frontman has shared the record’s lead single “Girl on the Billboard,” as well as a run of 2023 tour dates — his first live shows in four years.

The Devil Always Collects is Setzer’s eleventh solo effort, which he co-produced himself along with Julian Raymond and mixer Chris Lord-Alge. A press release promises “virtuosic” guitar riffs and “non-stop freight train rhythms” that will appease “fans of rock, Americana, rockabilly, and punk” alike. Pre-orders are ongoing.

Like a lot of Setzer’s work, “Girl on the Billboard” sounds retro by nature; the song was originally popularized in 1965 by country music singer Del Reeves. “It’s an old truckers song,” Setzer adds in a statement. “At first I wasn’t getting the sound I wanted until I picked...

Mental health is a common theme throughout the show and in the latest episode with country singer Mickey Guyton, the two discuss how experiencing racism can severely impact a person of color's mental health.

Guyton, who is the first Black female artist to earn a Grammy nomination in a country music category for her single "Black Like Me," begins the interview discussing her break into the industry. She talks about how meeting DJ D-Wrek led to her working with Julian Raymond, a Grammy Award winning record producer who helped put Guyton on the map. But the interview takes a much more serious tone when the country music artist and trailblazer begins to share...

Brian Setzer on the Art of Writing Car Songs and What Made ‘Rock This Town’ Slap
Image
Car songs are a must on any Brian Setzer album. His latest, Gotta Have the Rumble, is no exception — it opens with the one-two punch of the racer’s taunt “Checkered Flag” and the noir-ish “Smash Up on Highway One.” But the singer, guitarist, and co-founder of rockabilly heroes the Stray Cats favors a particular kind of car. In other words, there’s no Tesla parked in the driveway of his Minnesota home. “No, no, no,” Setzer laughs when asked the question. “That’s a pretty amazing ride, though.”

Image
Cheap Trick have released a new song, “Boys and Girls Rock N Roll,” from their upcoming album, In Another World, out April 9th.

“Boys and Girls Rock N Roll” has all the hallmarks of a classic Cheap Trick anthem, anchored by an array of big riffs and an enormous sing-along chorus. “She lives and bleeds rock & roll,” Robin Zander sings, before the rest of the group jumps in behind him, “Now see what she’s done to me boys/Well she lays it down for me boys/She says she...

Glen Campbell’s ‘Galveston’ at 50: Inside the Album’s Classic Title Track
Glen Campbell
In 1969, there was no bigger star in popular music than singer-guitarist Glen Campbell. Although Johnny Cash was by then a weekly TV star like his fellow Arkansan, Campbell’s broad appeal ensured chart dominance across the genres of pop, country and easy listening, and his album output was impressive by any standard. In 1968, five Campbell albums were issued, with four of them topping the country chart and one, Wichita Lineman, also hitting Number One on the multi-genre Billboard 200.

Fifty years ago on March 17th, 1969, Capitol Records released Campbell’s thirteenth album,...

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in A Star is Born (2018)
Lady Gaga isn’t the first performer in a film to compete for a Best Song Oscar — some have even won
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in A Star is Born (2018)
Can we agree that among the eight Oscar nominations granted “A Star Is Born,” its likeliest win will be Best Song for “Shallow”? That soaring ballad sold the music-packed showbiz saga’s first trailer like nobody’s business as Lady Gaga‘s Ally started to roar before a mic. The pop chanteuse herself would receive the honor alongside her co-writers Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt. The song has already won a Golden Globe and is up for four Grammys, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Judging by the combined odds chart based on rankings by Experts, Editors and Users, “Shallow’s” support is quite deep, with more than 2,200 predicting it will win.

Songs that bring home the Academy Award usually benefit from actually being performed onscreen and not just heard, and Gaga and Bradley Cooper do a mesmerizing job of selling this tune. But...

Flashback: Glen Campbell, Stone Temple Pilots Perform ‘Wichita Lineman’
Glen Campbell
As a vital member of L.A.’s Wrecking Crew, the group of ace studio musicians who backed countless recordings in the Sixties and Seventies, guitarist Glen Campbell was heard on songs that ran the gamut from the sunshine pop of the Partridge Family to the gritty R&B of Ike and Tina Turner. Campbell would move from session work to worldwide superstardom with 1967’s “Gentle on My Mind,” which was followed closely that year by “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.” Those two songs would serve as the...

Birdman wins best film, director
Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Amy Ryan, Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, and Andrea Riseborough in Birdman ou (La Surprenante vertu de l'ignorance) (2014)
A memorable 87th annual Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight saw Birdman claim best film, director and two other statuettes to tie with The Grand Budapest Hotel’s four-strong haul.

Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.

The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.

Eddie Redmayne from The Theory Of Everything prevailed in a tight best actor contest to deny Michael Keaton another success for Birdman. The popular victory had the British actor jumping with excitement on stage at the Dolby Theatre.

Julianne Moore finally converted her fifth Academy Award nomination into a win for her performance in Still Alice in what...

Sean Penn walks on. It’s time for the big one. Best film. Will it be Birdman or Boyhood? It’s Birdman! The movie ends the night tied with The Grand Budapest Hotel on four Oscars. Oscars Predictions 2015 According To Wamg
When the first Academy Awards were handed out on May 16, 1929, at an Academy banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, movies had just begun to talk. The attendance was 270 and guest tickets cost $5. It was a long banquet, filled with speeches, but presentation of the statuettes was handled expeditiously by Academy President Douglas Fairbanks.

The suspense that now touches most of the world at Oscar time was not always a characteristic of the Awards presentation. That first year, the award recipients were announced to the public three months ahead of the ceremony.

Today, Oscar pundits and fans alike avidly watch the precursor and guild awards to ultimately make their predictions in the 24 categories. Academy members have cast their ballots, so now it’s our turn for our Oscar picks.

Need some help in that office Oscar pool or at the party you’re throwing at home? Wamg is here to help.

Oscars 2015: Why 'Selma's' Best Hope Is "Glory"
Julian Raymond
"Of course we're disappointed that the movie wasn’t nominated, but at least we got in through the side door with a song.” That’s Julian Raymond talking — he’s nominated for “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” his contribution to the documentary Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me — but it could be almost any of the other writers up for the Oscar for original song, as each song nom is its film’s best or only chance for a win. The Lego Movie and Beyond the Lights may have had vastly different commercial results ($468 million globally versus $15 million), but they’re both singing the same

Still Glen: Alzheimer’s-Stricken Best Song Nominee Provides Oscar’s Most Dramatic And Moving Story
Glen Campbell
Exclusive: Best Actress front-runner Julianne Moore playing a victim of early-onset Alzheimer’s in Still Alice has been drawing the lion’s share of attention to that mind-robbing disease this awards season, but it’s a fictional character. There is another Alzheimer’s-related Oscar story that is even more compelling — because it’s real, as one of this year’s most recognizable nominees is deep into his own battle with the horrible disease.

Country superstar Glen Campbell, now living in a facility in Nashville and suffering from an advancing case of Alzheimer’s, received his first Oscar nomination for the remarkable song, “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” from the documentary Glen Campbell…I’ll Be Me, which chronicles his final concert tour as the disease closed in on him. The song, serving as a goodbye to his loved ones, wryly and knowingly gets to the heart of what it...

Oscars: Best Original Song Nominees All In One Place – Hot Vids For Voters
Glen Campbell
An Academy voter yesterday told me she wished there was one place to hear all five of the Oscar-nominated songs at once. Alhough the Academy sends out a lavish DVD package of the Foreign Language, Documentary Feature and Live Action, Documentary and Animated Shorts, it does nothing regarding the songs, which at best show up in downloads or the occasional CD.

So instead of making you rummage through YouTube videos, Oscar voters, here is every one of the five nominees for Original Song. And this year they are, to quote the title of the first entry, awesome. Check out the contenders below.

“Everything Is Awesome” from The Lego Movie

Music and Lyric by Shawn Patterson

“Glory” from Selma

Music and Lyric by John Stephens and Lonnie Lynn

“Grateful” from Beyond The Lights

Music and Lyric by Diane Warren

THR Song Summit: Common, Diane Warren, Other Nominees Talk Music, Oscars (Podcast)
By Scott Feinberg

The Hollywood Reporter

People tune in to the all-star games of the various professional sports because they provide a rare chance to see a significant number of the great talents of a profession gather in one place and have fun with one another. In Hollywood, such opportunities are surprisingly rare. And in the music business, they are even rarer.

That’s why The Hollywood Reporter was so excited to corral almost all of this year’s best original song Oscar nominees for an extended conversation and photoshoot immediately following the Oscar Nominees Luncheon on Feb. 2. And perhaps that’s also why the six individuals who joined us — Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois for “Lost Stars” from Begin Again, Common for “Glory” from Selma, Shawn Patterson for “Everything is Awesome” from The Lego Movie, Julian Raymond for “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” from Glen Campbell: I...

"I'm Not Gonna Miss You" is featured in the documentary I'll Be Me, which followed Campbell on his farewell tour in the U.S., Australia and Europe as he battled Alzheimer's. The song was co-written by Campbell's longtime friend and producer Julian Raymond.

The Nominations For The 87th Annual Academy Awards
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just finished announcing their nominees for the 87th Annual Academy Awards, with Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the way with nine nominations apiece, followed by The Imitation Game with eight. As usual, there were plenty of surprises to be found this morning, so let’s take a look at a few:

Selma ended up not making as grand a showing as many thought it would, nabbing only two nominations (Best Picture and Best Original Song). In a shocking turn of events, Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl has been snubbed from Best Adapted Screenplay after being the leader throughout awards season, making it a wide-open category. Bennett Miller made a completely surprising appearance in Best Director for Foxcatcher, while Steve Carell managed to squeeze into the incredibly crowded Best Actor category. Bradley Cooper has also managed to sneak into Best Actor for American Sniper.
