11 Great Sci-Fi Movies for Kids to Watch After ‘Elio’
Image
Children watching Pixar’s new animated sci-fi adventure “Elio” may be dazzled by the film’s science fiction concepts, wild alien characters and outer space adventures. Adults, however, might experience a sense of déjà vu. “Elio” may be an original story but it’s cobbled together from memorable pieces of other sci-fi movies, classics and cult classics alike, which makes it a perfect opportunity to introduce younger audiences to the wonderful, weird movies that inspired it. And also some other films which are remarkably similar and got unfairly overlooked.

So if you or your kids exit the theater wanting more films like “Elio” — despite the film’s many flaws — here’s your viewing list. Plop yourselves down on that couch and make a whole weekend of it. You’ll be glad you did!

Review: Captain Planet: The Complete Franchise
Image
Conceived by Barbara Pyle and media mogul Ted Turner, Captain Planet was an ecological hero way ahead of his time. The animated series ran for years with some nifty design work by Neal Adams and his Continuity Associates. Each episode featured an adventure and a lesson (of course). It endeared itself to a generation of viewers and remained an enduring figure from the 1990s.

Now, Warner Home Entertainment has released Captain Planet the Complete Franchise, with 41 hours and 31 minutes of environmental goodness. For silly legal reasons, the show has two titles evenly split among its six seasons: Captain Planet and the Planeteers (animated by Dic) and The New Adventures of Captain Planet (animated by Hanna-Barbera) for the final three seasons.

Gaia, the spirit of Earth, was voiced by Whoopi Goldberg, who set the tone and standard for the entire series. She was accompanied by a voice cast that included Margot Kidder...

Time Bandits' Future on Apple TV+ Revealed Weeks After Season 1 Finale
Image
The future of Time Bandits on Apple TV+ has been revealed. Unfortunately for fans of the series, it's not good news at all.

Per Deadline, it's been reported that Time Bandits has been canceled after one season. The news comes less than a month after the show ended its freshman season on Apple TV+, concluding on Aug. 21 after initially debuting on July 24. Consisting of 10 episodes in total, the first and only season released two episodes together on a weekly basis. While the show garnered a respectable 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes, its viewership was not particularly high, as Time Bandits failed to crack the Nielsen Top 10 rankings for streaming titles.

10 Biggest Differences Between Taika Waititi's Time Bandits Show & The 1981 Movie
Image
Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Time Bandits (1981) and Time Bandits season 1.

Time Bandits season 1 brings a fresh take on the classic movie, offering new storylines and character developments. The show diverges in casting choices, featuring diverse actors and a more detailed exploration of the time bandits' characters. Changes in historical figures and character fates differentiate the show from the original movie, setting up the potential for season 2.

Time Bandits season 1 revealed many differences between the 2024 Taika Waititi show and the 1981 Terry Gilliam movie it was based on. The 1980s fantasy movie was adapted into an Apple TV+ show that featured 10 episodes in its first season, allowing for an expansion of the story. Along with this expanded story came many changes, though they followed similar premises, making it a clear remake rather than a show inspired by the movie.

Perhaps the biggest changes between the show and the movie came...

'Sign Me Up': Lisa Kudrow Confirms She Was Offered Time Bandits Role Via Dm
Image
Time Bandits star Lisa Kudrow recently shared that Taika Waititi slid into her DMs to ask her if she would star in the Apple TV+ series. According to the former Friends star, getting her to sign on to the fantasy adventure project didn't take much convincing.

In an interview with Collider, Kudrow confirmed reports that Waititi offered her the role of Penelope, leader of the Time Bandits, via a Dm. "I was thrilled. Id met him once at my friends house and had been a huge fan. I just met him really briefly, and then got this [message] that said, 'Hey, would you ever consider working in New Zealand?'" she recalled. "I was like, 'Well, Ive always wanted to go to New Zealand. It depends on what [it is].' And he was like, 'Oh, Jemaine Clement and I wrote a show thats based on Time Bandits.' And I just went,...

The Time Bandits TV Series Just Rewrote the Original Film’s Shock Ending
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Time Bandits (1981) & (2024) episodes one & two.

“Strong language, self-harm references & violence. This programme isn’t suitable for younger viewers,” is the warning from Channel4.com to anybody currently wishing to stream Terry Gilliam’s 1981 fantasy adventure film Time Bandits in the UK. Despite the film’s “G” (all ages admitted) rating, the streamer asks viewers to confirm that they’re over the age of 16 before it will play.

An overreaction, or fair dos, in light of the film’s meaty battle scenes and famously bleak ending?

The Original Time Bandits Ending

In the film’s final scenes, 11-year-old Kevin (Craig Warnock) awakens in his own bed following a series of perilous adventures through history with a band of time-travelling wannabe thieves played by actors with dwarfism.

After romping through Napoleon’s battlefields, having a hand in the killing of the Minotaur, experiencing the sinking of the Titanic,...

How ‘The Comeback’ Led to Lisa Kudrow’s Gender-Flipped Starring Role on ‘Time Bandits’
Image
A couple of years ago, Taika Waititi slid into Lisa Kudrow’s Instagram DMs with a once-in-a-lifetime proposition: How would she feel about visiting New Zealand for the first time and filming a fantasy show — a genre she had yet to explore — for six months?

It was an offer that Kudrow, who was born and raised in Los Angeles and doesn’t particularly love to travel for long stretches of time, couldn’t pass up. The show in question was Time Bandits — Waititi, Jemaine Clement and Iain Morris’ series adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s 1981 fantasy classic. The original film starred Gilliam’s Monty Python co-stars John Cleese and Michael Palin, as well as Sean Connery, Shelley Duvall and Ian Holm.

In the new Apple TV+ series, which premiered Wednesday, Kudrow stars as Penelope, the de facto leader of a ragtag group of thieves who is forced to journey through time and space with an 11-year-old,...

Time Bandits (2024)
Image
Streaming on: Apple TV+

Episodes viewed: 10 of 10

On paper, it looks like the perfect comedy storm: a cult-classic post-Monty Python adventure from Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin, adapted and updated by the dudes behind What We Do In The Shadows and The Inbetweeners. But, for all its pedigree and Apple-funded VFX budget, this 21st-century Time Bandits doesn’t deliver the swag.

The main culprits are the titular gang. Portrayed in the original by dwarf performers including David Rappaport, Kenny Baker and Jack Purvis, the Bandits were an engagingly energetic crew, whose fractious antics powered much of the action-comedy (when the big-star cameos weren’t happening) — as loveable as they were amoral. Here, the noticeably ganglier likes of Lisa Kudrow, Roger Jean Nsengiyumva and Charlyne Yi fail to measure up.

The extended running time doesn’t do the concept any favours

This is mostly down to the new troupe’s oddly low-energy shtick,...

Time Bandits Gets Exciting Update Ahead of Apple TV+ Series Premiere
Image
Time Bandits may not be one and done. Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, who developed the modern-day reimagining of the beloved 1981 film, recently revealed that a second season is being written.

Speaking with ComicBook.com to promote the upcoming Apple TV+ series, Clement shared that a second season is in the process of being written, although it has not officially received the greenlight from the streamer yet. "We are actually writing a second season, but it depends on if people watch the first season. If no one watches it, we throw it away in a bin," he said. "But I cannot tell you because I don't want to spoil the second season." Time Bandits is the latest collaboration between Waititi and Clement after the What We Do in the Shadows franchise.

Starring Sting, Jennifer Beals, Clancy Brown, David Rappaport Directed by Franc Roddam Distributed by Scream Factory The Bride (1985) isn’t really a horror flick. Stephen Amell Teases “Awesome” Arrowverse Crossover Featuring Batwoman
At long last, one of the Bat-family is coming to the Arrowverse!

Next season’s big four-way crossover between The CW’s four DC shows will introduce Gotham City and one of its heroes, Kate Kane Aka Batwoman, into the Arrowverse for the very first time. The announcement was made earlier this month but, obviously, plot details and the like were kept under wraps.

That didn’t stop fans from trying to pick Arrow star Stephen Amell’s brain about the crossover though while he held a Q&A panel at this weekend’s Heroes & Villains Fan Fest in London. When asked about the incoming introduction of Batwoman, the actor couldn’t give anything away, but he did reveal that he knew the whole story and promised that it’d be “awesome.”

“I know the entire story of the crossover. It’s awesome, and I can’t talk about it at all.

This Flash Season 2 Mystery Casting Has Fans In A Frenzy
The Flash Is Casting A Mystery Role That Has Many Fans Thinking Jay Garrick Fresh off their scoop that The Flash is looking to cast their own Felicity Smoak-type character for season 2, TV Line is now reporting on More additions to the show. Fans are already speculating that the description could be for Jay Garrick, who was previously teased in the epic season one finale. Read for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments below. In addition to Wendy – is casting the season-long role of a classically handsome, square-jawed hero in his 30s to early 40s, a slightly cynical man “with an edge.” The casting call lists the character as “John Clark,” which is obviously fake/a nod to the DC Comics letterer. Though I must wonder if one of Clark’s works hints at the character being introduced…. If David Rappaport is indeed looking to...

Are We About To Get The Supergirl We Deserve?
Following the news that the casting of the planned Supergirl TV series will be handled by David Rappaport Casting (Arrow, The Flash), interest in the Casting Director’s Twitter account has inevitably increased. Eagle-eyed followers were not disappointed, either, as a sizeable hint appeared on December 30th.

“She’s coming soon” suggests that the casting process is beginning to crystallize, and an announcement could be imminent. Interestingly, unlike developing series such as Marvel’s Jessica Jones, there does not seem to be a popular shortlist of actresses for the role. Some names have come and swiftly faded, but a single name has led the field for some time – British actress Gemma Atkinson. The rumours swirling around the involvement of the...

Criterion Collection: Time Bandits | Blu-ray Review
Terry Gilliam’s second solo directorial effort, Time Bandits, remains an oddly hilarious bridge between his work with the Monty Python gang and his subsequent dystopian solo films like Brazil, Twelve Monkeys and even last year’s The Zero Theorem. Drenched in English dry wit and warped by the cartoonist’s soul that pervades all of Gilliam’s work, the film sees a gang of little people abandoning their posts as the creator’s right hand men to leap through the corridors of time pillaging as many treasures as they can drag with them, while a child gets wrapped up in the mischief along the way. Of its period in more ways that one, it feels a bit like a valiant attempt at emulating Spielberg with Gilliam-Goggles on.

With a stolen map of all time and space in hand, the little gang of burglars, led by Randall (played by a...

"Barry Allen Comes To Starling City"; Arrow S02E08 "The Scientist" Description
The CW have released the description (via FlashTVNews) for the eighth episode of the second season of Arrow, titled "The Scientist", featuring Glee's Grant Gustin guest starring as Barry Allen, who ultimately becomes The Flash in Episode 20. The following description reveals just what exactly brings Barry Allen to Starling City and how he gets tangled up in all of it. Will this episode bring more hints about the S.T.A.R Labs particle accelerator? Gustin's screentest has been praised by the likes of Geoff Johns, and his performance in the episode was even moreso praised by the producers and talent involved with Arrow. David Rappaport and the Arrow crew haven't missed a beat with casting yet, so Grant Gustin will probably be no different.Barry Allen Comes To Starling City — A seemingly impossible robbery at Queen Consolidated’s Applied Sciences Division brings Central City police scientist Barry Allen...

‘Time Bandits’ Blu-ray Review
Stars: Sean Connery, John Cleese, Shelley Duvall, Ian Holm, Michael Palin, Ralph Richardson, Peter Vaughan, David Warner, David Rappaport, Kenny Baker, Malcolm Dixon, Mike Edmonds, Jack Purvis, Tiny Ross | Written by Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin | Directed by Terry Gilliam

Time Bandits was first released in 1981. A family adventure film that sported a fantastic and massive cast of names, with the likes of Sean Connery, John Cleese, Shelley Duvall, Ian Holm and Michael Palin, among others. It was like a fantastical family film with the cast of Monty Python.

Director and another former Python, Terry Gilliam, who went on to direct such incredible cinematic events as Brazil, Twelve Monkeys and Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas was behind the camera here, much like he was in the Monty Python movies and it feels very similar to his previous work in many ways. Surreal and at times incredibly weird, Time Bandits just feels like a Gilliam film.

Mirror Mirror and dwarfism at the movies
He may be the star of the new Snow White adaptation, but Povinelli's dwarfism means he's fighting for varied roles

In his hotel room in New Orleans, Mark Povinelli is reflecting upon the sort of scripts he receives. "They're usually obnoxious. I flick through to what page I'm going to be on and … 'Oh look! Biting someone on the ankle! Or punching someone in the balls!' … The trick is to be one step ahead of them. You can't just say, 'I don't like this', you have to come up with an idea that is better. And that's the real challenge – an extra added task that a lot of average actors don't have to deal with. Not only do you have to be a good performer, but you have to come up with better material than you're given a lot of times, to allow yourself to sleep at night."

Povinelli...
