The Shining Mashes Up Perfectly With The Grand Budapest Hotel
You.d think that a horror classic about a man dealing homicidal past life issues with his family and a charming period piece comedy about an assiduous hotel concierge and his lobby boy apprentice would have little to nothing in common. However, this amazing mashup of The Shining and The Grand Budapest Hotel flows so smoothly it makes you want to get out your tinfoil hat and ponder if it was too perfect. A filmmaker named Steve Ramsden pieced together this spectacular cut, The Grand Overlook Hotel, which brilliantly showcases a rather disturbing compatibility between the two seemingly dissimilar dilemmas of the films. characters. While the clip contains footage from Stanley Kubrick.s tension-teeming horror masterpiece, the power of peppy music and editing has somehow absorbed the late helmer.s work into the folksy, charming stylistics of Wes Anderson. In essence, as the clip.s labeling suggests, this has become...

Video of the Day: Watch a mashup of ‘The Shining’ and ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’
Over the years, filmmakers Stanley Kubrick and Wes Anderson have garnered critical and commercial acclaim for their work, with each of them having their distinctive style. However, the similarities between the two mostly end there, with the two having worked in different time periods, dabbling in different genres, and possessing different strengths.

There is another notable similarity between the two as of last year, however; both filmmakers have made movies about hotels. Kubrick’s 1980 film The Shining, the adaptation of the Stephen King novel, follows the Overlook Hotel and its caretakers, the Torrance family, during its off-season of winter, when the trio are the only humans in the place. Anderson’s 2014 film The Grand Budapest Hotel, on the other hand, deals with the trials and tribulations of M. Gustave, the concierge at the titular hotel who gets embroiled in issues surrounding a family’s inheritance.

The Grand Overlook Hotel
Yes, another day and another Internet video involving Stanley Kubrick. Hell, another video playing up, and spoofing, the themes and visuals of Wes Anderson for that matter, but YouTuber Steve Ramsden has done one hell of a job mashing the two together as he's taken Kubrick's The Shining and Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel and created The Grand Overlook Hotel and, well, it actually says just as much if not more about Kubrick and Anderson than any one of the video essays created over the years. It speaks largely to the use of camera movement utilized by the two directors, the center framing and the tone of these two films. Both defy genre, one a mind-bending horror that utilizes plenty of dark comedy, the other a dark comedy that utilizes moments of horror, though mostly for comedic effect. Ramsden not only played with the aspect ratio of The Shining, but...

Wes Anderson Meets ‘The Shining’ in ‘The Grand Overlook Hotel’ Mash-Up
Wes Anderson
At first, you might think that directors Wes Anderson and Stanley Kubrick don’t have much in common. Their films couldn’t be on more opposite ends of the spectrum. The Shining and Grand Budapest Mash up Perfectly in “The Grand Overlook Hotel”
Who doesn't love a good movie mashup? Everyone is capable of making them, so there's a slew of them out there, but Birth Movies Death tracked down an especially impressive gem well worth sharing that pairs The Shining with The Grand Budapest Hotel called "Wes Anderson's The Shining." This thing is absolutely seamless. Not only does the mashup's creator, Steve Ramsden, find some spot-on dialogue crossovers, but he actually manages to make it look like an Overlook hallway leads right into a Grand Budapest room. And how about that coloring? I never realized how many visuals in The Shining had such a Wes Anderson feel to them. However, Ramsden did. Here's what he told Live for Films: "I noticed how Wes Anderson and Stanley Kubrick frame their shots in a similar way – this was the result: 'The Grand Overlook Hotel'!" It's a simple, one-sentence observation, but that's the key to quality mashups right there.
