Here he grew up with his sister in middle-class circumstances. After primary school, Raab attended a Jesuit boarding school in Bad Godesberg until he graduated from high school in 1986, where he was also supported musically. He then completed military service until 1987. Raab began his professional life by training as a butcher in his parents' business. After completing his apprenticeship, he studied law at the universities of Cologne and Bielefeld. He also composed songs for various commercials, among others. After initial success, he finished his studies after the fifth semester and set up his own recording studio in 1990. Raab received numerous orders from radio stations, advertising agencies and television stations to produce melodies and jingles.

In 1993, the music channel VIVA was founded and Raab applied there to be able to compose the trailer music. As part of his application, he also took part in a casting where he was chosen as the presenter of the show "Vivasion". After a short time, the program was one of the station's most successful programs and Raab became known throughout Germany. The next year, for the 1994 World Cup, Raab produced his first, later typical Raab song, "Böörtie Böörtie Vogts", which also became a summer hit. In 1995, a cover version of Jürgen Drew's single "Ein Bett im Kornfeld" followed, which he recorded together with Bürger Lars Dietrich and Jürgen Drews. The single reached number 27 in the German hit parade. For the 25th anniversary of "Sendung mit der Maus," Raab made the well-known Mouse anthem a hit with an original rap.

In 1998, Guildo Horn won the German preliminary decision for the "Grand Prix d'Eurovision" with the Stefan Raab song "Guildo hat euch lieb", in which Raab himself took fifth place in 2000 with "Wadde hadde dudeda". In 1998, Brainpool TV GmbH acquired a 50% stake in the production company Stefan Raab TV GmbH, founded by Raab. Raab then acquired a 25% stake in Brainpool TV. In 1999, Raab got his own TV show "TV Total" on the private broadcaster Pro7, which was initially broadcast weekly. After great success, production was expanded to four programs per week in 2001. From this position, Stefan Raab developed into the founder of event television, which he was able to successfully transfer from his show to a wide variety of TV concepts.

On March 22, 2001, Raab staged a boxing match against the Karlsruhe boxing world champion Regina Halmich, which was announced on his broadcast. It was a victory on points for Halmich. Other competitions of this kind followed. On the occasion of the "Golden Camera" award ceremony on February 4, 2004, Raab was honored in the "TV Entertainer" category. At the 41st awards ceremony of the Adolf Grimme Prize in March 2005, Stefan Raab was honored for promoting musical talent as part of his event "Stefan sucht den super Grand Prix Star" (SSDSGPS). At the Echo Music Prize award ceremony on April 1, 2005, Raab was named the most successful music producer of the year for his productions by Max Mutzke, SSDSGPS ("Stefan sucht den Super Grand Prix Star") and the film music for "(T)Raumschiff Surprise". .

After successful productions such as "Wok-WM" (since 2003) and the "Bundesvision Song Contest" (since 2005), the game show "Schlag den Raab" started on ProSieben in 2006. On September 29, 2007, he received the German Television Award in the Best Entertainment Program category for the fifth edition of "Schlag den Raab". Since the beginning of 2007, Raab has regularly hosted celebrities on the "TV Total PokerStar.de Night". On February 6, 2008, the show "Schlag den Raab" received the Golden Camera. Furthermore, Raab was awarded the Bambi media prize in the "Entertainment" category on November 27, 2008. In 2009 he received the "Herbert Award 2009" in the category of Best TV Sports Program for TV Total Turmsprung. On June 18, 2015, Raab announced that he would no longer host any more shows after the end of the year.

In his private life, Raab lives very withdrawnly in Cologne. He has been in a relationship with Nike, an editor at the "TV Total" production company "Brainpool", for several years. Together they are parents of two children.
