One of the most significant additions to the Academy Awards ceremony around 30 years ago has been the In Memoriam segment. Producers find the perfect blend of music, photos and clips for the short annual presentation.

Which of the past Oscar winners and nominees from many different branches will be featured this Sunday, February 9, on the Oscars 2020 ceremony for ABC? Disney has found its Ariel for its live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid.” Actress and singer Halle Bailey will star in Rob Marshall’s film as the lead Ariel, the studio announced Wednesday.

Bailey is one half of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle and has also starred in episodes of “Grown-ish.” She’ll also star opposite Melissa McCarthy, who is in talks to play the sea witch Ursula. Most people would know Halle from the time she and her sister Chloe sang “America the Beautiful” at this year’s Super Bowl.

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Marshall said in a statement.

Though Woody and Buzz’s original owner, Andy Davis, is mostly missing from “Toy Story 4,” his legacy looms large over the plot of the new Pixar movie. It’s not hard to see why. Even nine years after the release of “Toy Story 3,” Andy’s voice actor, John Morris, says people still bring up that film’s tear-inducing ending where Andy hands off his beloved cowboy to little Bonnie.

“A lot of people tell me ‘Oh my gosh, I just broke down and cried!'” Morris told TheWrap. “I think that ending just taps into a universal milestone of childhood ending and entering adulthood. While recording that scene I went back to how I felt when I left for college and left childhood, and because it became so emotional for me, I think it became emotional for the audience.”

Son of immigrants became third Chinese-American employed by Disney.

It emerged on Tuesday (2) that Milton Quon, who worked on Disney classics Fantasia and Dumbo in the golden age of animation, died at home in California of natural causes on June 18. He was 105.

Quon was born in Los Angeles to Chinese immigrants and grew up with his seven sisters. Coaxed by his uncle, the young Quon began to explore his artistic flair, and soon found work as a designer for Chinatown restaurants.

When he joined Disney in 1939 he became the third Chinese-American to work at the studio, and landed jobs on Fantasia and Dumbo.

Milton Quon, an animator who worked on “Fantasia” and “Dumbo,” died of natural causes at his home in Torrance, Ca., on June 18. He was 105.

His son, artist Mike Quon, told Variety that his father was drawing up until his last days. He also acted in movies including “Speed,” “Chill Factor,” “Sweet Jane,” “The Cat Killers” and the TV series “NYPD Blue” in addition to working as a Disney publicity executive. He described his “Speed” character in a 2005 interview as the “token Asian on the bus.”

Mike Quon said his father maintained a sense of humor throughout his life. When asked about the secret to his longevity, he would reply, “A good wife and Chinese food.”

“Dad lived the full artist life,” Mike Quon told TheWrap.

Born in Los Angeles to Chinese immigrants in 1913, Quon was hired by Walt Disney Studios in 1939 and got his start in animation on the studio’s legendary classic “Fantasia.” Quon’s work could be seen in the “Waltz of the Flowers” segment, where fairies bring changes to the season in a peaceful forest to music from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite” plays.

When director Jan de Bont set about casting the various faces and secondary characters that populated bus #2525 in his 1994 actioner "Speed," it was very important to him that they reflect the multicultural identity of Los Angeles. Not only that, but he wanted there to be a heavy dose of realism in his choices, actors who seemed to be people you could look over on a morning commute and see reading the paper, sipping coffee, gazing out the window and starting their day.
