Official Trailer for 'Nobu' Doc on the Famous Chef & His Restaurants
Image
"He finally had his own restaurant." Vertical has revealed an offiical trailer for the documentary film titled simply Nobu, about the famous chef and about the famous restaurants around the world known as "Nobu". Nobu examines culinary legend Nobuyuki Matsuhisa's empire, offering an intimate portrait of a man who has redefined global gastronomy alongside his business partners Robert De Niro and Meir Teper. The film premiered at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival last year, and it also just played at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival this summer (thanks to the De Niro connection of course) before its release during July. Beyond his artistic mastery, the film also explores the evolution of the Nobu restaurant group into a global symbol of luxury and hospitality. This exquisite biopic doc film Nobu highlights the far-reaching impact of Matsuhisa's culinary innovation, featuring appearances from his founding partner Robert De Niro, supermodel Cindy Crawford, and the chefs Wolfgang Puck & Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

‘Nobu’ Review: Japanese Celebrity Chef Gets a Food Doc That Plays Like a Branded Advertisement
Image
Among the world’s most famous chefs, Nobu Matsuhisa makes for a wildly interesting cinematic subject — or at least, he would in a more accomplished film. From documentarian Matt Tyrnauer, “Nobu” lays out the factual bullet points of Matsuhisa’s early life in Japan, his fledging business in Peru, and eventually, his success in LA and New York City. However, the movie often brushes past what might have been its most intriguing moments in favor of an unobtrusive hagiography. It approaches dramatic rigor and visual intrigue in only the briefest of scenes, often far too late into its runtime.

The opening images of “Nobu” are enticing: mouth-watering extreme closeups of freshly prepared gourmet sushi and sashimi bathed in golden light, prepared by an expert hand. However, this is the first and last time the food in this food documentary feels like the central focus. There’s much talk about preparation,...

Vertical Acquires Matt Tyrnauer’s ‘Nobu’ Documentary (Exclusive)
Image
Vertical has acquired North American distribution rights to Matt Tyrnauer’s documentary “Nobu” ahead of its 2025 Tribeca Festival premiere.

Based on the book “Nobu: A Memoir by Nobu Matsuhisa,” the film about the famous chef and restaurateur Nobu Matsuhisa had its world premiere at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival.

In the documentary, Tyrnauer examines Matsuhisa’s empire while also chronicling his roots from a delinquent childhood to his emergence as a promising young chef and eventually the man who redefined global gastronomy.

“Nobu is arguably the most successful chef of all time, having invented his own style of Japanese cuisine and achieving mononym/household name status,” says Tyrnauer. “But his story, as I discovered when shooting this film, is a much more textured and deeply moving one than we all know. It’s rooted in family tragedy and wrenching business failures that preceded his explosive late-blooming success. Starting in the punk-food scene in L.

Spago Elevates Passover Cuisine With Annual Interfaith Seder
Image
In a town full of transplants, the Passover holiday presents a unique challenge for Jewish residents without immediate family in the area. I’m speaking from experience. Every year, I wonder (read: stress) about the three whos: who will take us in, who will lead-and-read and who will be doing the cooking?

A Passover seder is intended to be an annual rite of passage, as so many religions have in some form, but the menu is almost as challenging as the Hebrew prayers recited and symbolic rituals recreated, to say nothing of the downer stories of slavery, plagues and all-around suffering.

Cold fish balls and dry flatbread doesn’t sound all that enticing — yes, it’s ultimately all about the food — which is why I was so enchanted to learn of an elevated interfaith seder experience right here in Beverly Hills, courtesy of dining institution Spago.

Leave it to Barbara Lazaroff,...

Image
The pinnacle of film excellence is met with the gold standard of craftsmanship for a decade-long partnership that makes perfect sense.

Since 2016, Rolex has served as the official host of the Oscars greenroom. Easily the most exclusive VIP lounge in Los Angeles, this backstage haven is strictly open to the evening’s host, presenters, nominees and winners. Here, they escape the ceremony’s hustle to relax, celebrate and mingle while sipping champagne and enjoying bites by Wolfgang Puck.

Each year, the Swiss watchmaker reimagines the space to thoughtfully capture its annual theme. In 2025, that theme is rewilding, otherwise known as the restoration of the natural world. This stems from Rolex’s ongoing conservation efforts supported by the brand’s Perpetual Planet Initiative, which partners with non-profit Tompkins Conservation and its offspring organizations Rewilding Chile and Rewilding Argentina to regenerate and sustain ecological communities.

To successfully execute the vision, Rolex’s...

Nightlife Impresario Bryan Rabin Is Bringing Back Giorgio’s and a Bit of Disco Decadence to New Year’s Eve in L.A.
Image
In the fall of 1990, inside a fully functional second floor magic shop located above a methadone clinic on Hollywood Boulevard, Bryan Rabin made his first splash on the Los Angeles nightlife scene (alongside his partner, the late actor Jimmy Medina) with a traveling, if extralegal, after hours club called The Lounge. “It was the Wild West. We’d just drive around at night and look for spots. I was 20 years old, full of moxie, and we’d just tell people we wanted to throw a bar mitzvah in their space,” recalls Rabin, noting the club migrated from photography and film studios to empty lofts and attracted everyone from Billy Idol to Thierry Mugler and Wolfgang Puck to dance there. “We moved every week to keep away from the police and had to call or fax everyone the day of each party.”

From there, he opened Prague in a Czechoslovakian meeting hall on Western Avenue,...

Stephen King Had A Secret Cameo In The Original Frasier Series
Image
One neat thing about the original "Frasier" series was that it had some major guest stars we never actually got to see. In fact, it had a ton of major guest stars we never got to see. Dr. Crane's Kacl talk radio show provided the perfect opportunity to land some of the greatest guests in TV history without having to worry about getting the celebrities into the studio — although Linda Hamilton actually doubled up as a caller and an in-person guest on "Frasier." Everyone from Christopher Reeve to Carrie Fisher called the good doctor for advice over the course of the show's 11 seasons, and it wasn't just actors.

"Frasier" also played host to the voices of musicians Eddie Van Halen and Art Garfunkel, as well as tennis star John McEnroe. While the show never struggled to get big-name actors in the flesh, these "hidden" cameos made for an undeniably cool...

‘Nobu’ Review: A Glowing and Straightforward Portrait of the Japanese Chef and His Empire
Image
A subject’s charm can take a documentary a long way. That’s the case in Matt Tyrnauer’s latest project, Nobu, a glowing portrait of Nobu Matsuhisa. The Japanese chef is best known for his empire of luxury sushi restaurants (and more recently, hotels), where guests can experience his medley of dishes inspired by his Japanese roots and early foray into Peruvian cuisine. In Nobu, based on Matsuhisa’s memoir of the same name, Tyrnauer (also in Telluride this year with Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid) anchors the global phenom’s name to a personality.

Nobu is a straightforward and admiring portrait of its subject. The film will likely appeal to fans of the chef (especially since this year marks the 30th anniversary of the first Nobu restaurant), but it may not completely satiate the culinary-curious. Less process-oriented and more wide-ranging than David Gelb’s glossy doc Jiro Dreams of Sushi,...

Hotel Bel-Air Debuts New Dining Room, Patisserie (Exclusive)
Image
The Hotel Bel-Air is now fully in its post-Wolfgang Puck era.

First it brought on culinary director Joe Garcia, a French Laundry vet who drew acclaim at West L.A.’s tasting-menu temple Manzke, as well as noted French-born pastry chef Christophe Rull.

Now the pair, who’ve already been freshening the offerings at the property’s eponymous al fresco restaurant — look out for the composed tuna tartare — are turning their attention to two new concepts.

The Living Room, done up in the fewer-frills casual refinement currently favored by today’s understated billionaires, now offers an extravagant afternoon tea. The service, at $140 per person, includes an array of savory and sweet bites, as well as a glass of champagne.

But the main event is a hyper-seasonal dinner menu which, at the outset, consists of elegant renditions of decidedly middle-Americana classics like grilled cheese (with black truffle and shallot marmalade...

If the Oscars Want a Great Host, They Should Probably Pay Better
Image
While it’s far too early to speculate on what movies will be nominated at next year’s Oscars (Dune: Part Two? Madame Web? A straight-to-streaming Sharknado sequel starring the Hawk Tuah girl?), the Academy has already been actively trying to lock down a host. Reportedly, Jimmy Kimmel and John Mulaney have been offered the gig, but both have turned it down.

This is especially disappointing news for Mulaney fans, who have been clamoring for him to host ever since he killed at the Academy’s Governors Awards and delighted the crowd at last year’s Oscars, when he presented the award for Achievement in Sound and reminded us all of the magic of the movies how downright goofy Field of Dreams really was.

Despite the widespread push for Mulaney to host the Oscars, Mulaney himself has remained fairly noncommittal on the issue. Just last month Variety asked him...

Michael Kors Takes Over Canter’s Deli Serving Spago Food to Olivia Wilde, Mindy Kaling and More Celebs

“It’s all about high and low,” exclaimed Michael Kors. “It always has been. Isn’t that what fashion’s all about?”

Tucked into a leather-lined booth in an elegant dining room replete with ivory flowers, passed trays of rosé champagne, spicy tuna cones and caviar handed out by handsome tux-ed waiters, he peered out into the softly lit, glorious sea of ladies during cocktail hour — many boldface names — decked out in his classic slinky black and gold jersey numbers — and chuckled: “Nobody would believe we’re in Canters!”

That’s right: Canter’s Deli on Fairfax, the old school almost hundred-year-old hangout for neighborhood regulars by day, and late-night post-club hipsters by night. Known for bagels, pastrami sandwiches, fat fries and Dr. Brown’s soda, not for being a celebrity hotspot.

Excuse me?

“Spago and Canters! That’s all you need to know!” laughed Kors. “I started a trend! But...

L.A.’s Real Estate Upfronts Reveal Penthouse A at Rosewood Residences Beverly Hills
Image
Timed to coincide with TV’s upfronts in New York, a real estate-focused event that also calls itself the Upfronts — a luxury property reveal thrown by The Society Group — took over The Wallis in Beverly Hills on May 15. Held in the Bram Goldsmith Theater, the confab saw L.A.’s biggest power brokers gather to preview some of the world’s most luxurious listings coming to market.

“This is fun for me because usually I’m sitting in the audience where you’re sitting looking at a performance,” Carolwood’s Linda May noted, “so it’s really nice to look out and see so many friends here enjoying the theater.”

Despite a few technical Av hiccups, the Upfronts ran like clockwork, with exuberant presenters giving succinct pitches to an involved audience about new-to-market skyscraper penthouses in NYC, $100 million-plus mansions in L.A. and even Hollywood production studios. After his presentation, Fredrik Eklund even joked,...

Oscars Highlights from MovieWeb's Time at the 96th Academy Awards
Image
The 2024 Academy Awards was one of the most entertaining in recent years, with big wins and unforgettable moments. Celebrities like Brendan Fraser and Kirsten Dunst mingled in the Dolby theater while we spoke with other stars. The live audience experience at the Oscars was unmatched, with loud cheers and a thrilling musical number by Ryan Gosling.

From the VIP food spread to schmoozing with the stars, MovieWeb was on-hand at the 2024 Academy Awards to soak in all that Oscars gold. The televised portion certainly captured all the show's highlights, including the big wins and a certain epic musical number. But as we were invited in and saw the ceremony play out in-person, there were a number of highlights that perhaps you didn't see, including the festivities inside the Dolby Theater beforehand.

Out of all the awards shows this year and even in recent years, it's safe to say this one...

Rob Lowe on Robert Downey Jr. Oscar Win: ‘His Life Story Is an Amazing and Inspirational Roller Coaster’
Image
On Hollywood’s biggest night, an exclusive viewing party in Beverly Hills brought together wall-to-wall reality television stars that gathered at Wolfgang Puck’s legendary restaurant Spago.

DirecTV Streaming With the Stars was an intimate affair for nearly 200 guests that was hosted by Rob Lowe. The event served plates of sautéed scallops and beet salads from the restaurant’s signature menu, along with specialty cocktails. And during a commercial break the DJ played “Happy Birthday” as staff wheeled out cakes and pies to celebrate Lowe turning 60 on March 17.

The host grinned with gratitude before turning his eyes to see the delivery of the Best Supporting Actor category on a screen in the middle of the lounge.

Watching his old friend Robert Downey Jr. take home the Oscar for “Oppenheimer” was a highlight of the evening for Lowe, who said he has known the Oscar winner since sharing a sophomore history class in Santa Monica.

Erika Alexander shines in 2023's American Fiction, adding depth to a mature, intellectual relationship with Jeffrey Wright's character. She spoke with MovieWeb's Will Sayre at the 96th Academy Awards. With 40 years in the business, Alexander reflects on her journey and the sacrifices her parents made for her success at the Oscars. Earth Mama and American Fiction reflect Alexander's roots in independent filmmaking, having shaped her career and powerful performances.

MovieWeb's own Will Sayre is at the 96th Academy Awards, down in the lobby where actors, filmmakers, and everyone in the industry are enjoying cocktails and Wolfgang Puck's appetizers. He ran into Kirsten Dunst and husband Jesse Plemons, young Dominic Sessa of The Holdovers, Brendan Fraser, and other stars, and had a moving conversation with Erika Alexander, one of the many great actors in the Oscar-nominated film, American Fiction.

Oscar Producers Talk Early Start Time, 20 Previous Winners Presenting Acting Prizes & That Massive ‘I’m Just Ken’ Number With 65 Male Dancers Backing Ryan Gosling: “We’re Going Big!”
Image
It is crunch time for Raj Kapoor, Katy Mullan, and Molly McNearney, the three Executive Producers of the 96th Annual Academy Awards. As they are putting final touches in place for what they hope will be a show that honors not just this year’s crop of movies but also Hollywood’s and Oscar’s rich history, the trio are planning a ceremony that excites viewers to the point of keeping the recent post-pandemic ratings rise rising.

All indications are good that this could be a banner year, ratings wise, for the Oscars, particularly with the potency and popularity of this year’s Best Picture contenders, most notably the dual phenomenon of summer blockbusters Barbie and front-runner Oppenheimer (aka Barbenheimer) which have 21 nominations between them. As host Jimmy Kimmel told me earlier this week, viewers will have actually seen this year’s movies and have a rooting interest in the outcome.

And the Oscar Goes to… Pigs in a Blanket
Image
Glad-handing is a competitive sport, one that’s all but impossible to win with both paws buried in a seafood tower. Such is the eternal conundrum of the awards season party circuit. These are celebrations, sure, yet the pressure to network, posture and kiss any proverbial ring that may be offered so often undermines that most basic of human urges: to cobble together a meal from passed hors d’oeuvres — especially after enduring a three-hour screening or even longer awards show on an empty stomach. It shouldn’t be so hard! And, thankfully, it needn’t be. By keeping a few helpful tips in mind — and, when the moments arise, in hand — any industry party can be professionally productive and filling.

The Smaller the Bite, the Better Sunset Tower, a perennial venue choice for studios, platforms and brands, likes to shrink standards from its Tower Bar menu — eliminating surprises for familiar clientele.

Michael Cieply: Why Official Oscar Night Fun Doesn’t Come Cheap
Image
In an idle moment, I kinda, sorta, half-thought that it might be fun to leave the pros behind and spend March 10, Academy Awards night, with some real fans at the annual “one-of-a-kind” viewing party at the Academy Museum.

So I did some window shopping on the museum web site. Wow.

Officially sponsored Oscar fun doesn’t come cheap. A single non-member ticket to the five-hour, black-tie optional affair goes for $250. For the arithmetically challenged, that’s $500 per couple, in exchange for which you get hors d’oeuvres and tacos, complimentary wine from European Oscar sponsors Clarendelle and Domaine Clarence Dillon (many of whose bottles are modestly priced), access to the museum galleries and store, and a shot at unreserved seating wherever.

For another $200, or $400 per couple — that’s 900 bucks in all — they’ll throw in dinner, free beer and cocktails, plus reserved seats in the Tea Room.
