Maria Protopappa
Widely regarded as one of the best Greek stage and screen actresses of her generation, Maria Protopappa was born in Korydallos (Attica, Greece) on February 28, 1971. After graduating from St. George's Commercial College, she studied acting at "Karolos Koun" Theatro Technis (i.e. Art Theatre) Drama School. Her brilliant screen work includes exquisite interpretations, such as in To 10 (2007), To nisi (2010), I lexi pou de les (2016), Adults in the Room (2019) and Sasmos (2021). She has also directed stage productions of Euripides' "Iphigenia in Aulis" (Athens and Epidaurus Festival, 2013), "Sweet Tyranny of Oedipus" based on Sophocles' "Oedipus Rex/Oedipus the King" (National Theatre of Greece, 2016), Thomas Bernhard' s "Ritter, Dene, Voss" (Theatro Neou Kosmou, 2019) and Jean Anouilh' s "Antigone" ("Karolos Koun" Theatro Technis, 2022). Her sublime stage acting work, among others, also includes superb characterizations of notable roles in Bertolt Brecht' s "The Caucasian Chalk Circle" (as Grusha Vashnadze), Tracy Letts' "August: Osage County" (as Barbara Weston), Euripides' "The Bacchae" (as Pentheus and Agave), Eugene O'Neill' s "Mourning Becomes Electra" (as Lavinia Mannon), Luigi Pirandello' s "To Clothe the Naked" (as Ersilia Drei) and Sophocles' "Aias/Ajax" (as Tecmessa).
