Mubi’s Cannes Acquisition ‘The History Of Sound’ Sets Early Fall Release
Image
Exclusive: Mubi’s Cannes Film Festival pick-up of Oliver Hermanus period gay romance, The History of Sound, is hitting theaters on Sept. 12.

While nothing has been confirmed, it wouldn’t be a surprise if this movie makes a pit stop at TIFF, many Cannes hits making their North American debut there as they tee up for awards season.

Mubi took North America out of Cannes, while Focus Features took international rights.

Blurb for movie which stars Paul Mescal, Josh O’Connor, Molly Price, Alison Bartlett, and Chris Cooper: In 1917, Lionel—a young, talented music student—meets David at the Boston Conservatory, where they bond over a deep love of folk music. Years later, Lionel receives a letter from David, leading to an impromptu journey through the backwoods of Maine to collect traditional songs. This unexpected reunion, ensuing love affair, and the music they collect and preserve, will shape the course...

How And Just Like That Originally Tried To Hide Mr. Big's Death Twist Revealed By Og Sex And The City Stars
Image
Two original Sex and the City stars revealed the lengths to which the reboot went to hide Mr. Big’s (Chris Noth) death in And Just Like That’s premiere. After their on-again/off-again romance played out for six seasons in Sex and the City, Carrie and John Preston finally tied the knot in the franchise’s self-titled first movie. However, Carrie’s long-awaited romance ended unexpectedly, with Mr. Big dying in And Just Like That’s first episode. The development came as a complete shock to audiences and charted a clear course for the reboot.

During Kristin Davis’ podcast, Are You a Charlotte? (via Entertainment Weekly), the host discussed the particulars with Molly Price’s Susan Sharon, revealing that when on set for Big’s funeral, the crew referred to Mr. Big with “she” and “her” pronouns, not wanting to give the impression that Carrie’s husband had died...

Paul Mescal's First New Movie Since Gladiator 2 Debuts With Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score Following Cannes Premiere
Image
Paul Mescal continues to emerge as one of the finest young actors working today. The Irish actor rose to fame for his lead role in the BBC/Hulu miniseries Normal People, for which he earned an Emmy nomination. From there, Mescal transitioned to film with his feature debut in The Lost Daughter and quickly earned his first Academy Award nomination for his quietly devastating performance as a troubled father in A24's Aftersun. He also starred in the LGBTQ+ romance All of Us Strangers, earning a BAFTA nomination for his performance.

However, for his first major action blockbuster, Mescal carefully chose Ridley Scott's Gladiator II, playing the lead role of Lucius, the son of Russell Crowe's Maximus. Despite expanding to big-budget filmmaking, Mescal hasn't lost his identity as an actor and continues to opt mostly for smaller, independent projects that showcase his subtle sensibilities as an actor. This...

Paul Mescal Says Movies Are ‘Moving Away’ From ‘Alpha’ Male Leads, Calls It ‘Lazy and Frustrating’ to Compare ‘History of Sound’ to ‘Brokeback Mountain’
Image
Paul Mescal reflected on masculinity in film during the Cannes press conference for “The History of Sound,” saying that he thinks cinema is “moving away” from alpha male roles. Mescal stars in Oliver Hermanus’ gay romance alongside Josh O’Connor, with the two playing musicians who travel to New England together in the summer of 1919 to record the folk songs of their rural countrymen.

“It’s ever shifting,” he said. “I think maybe in cinema we’re moving away from the traditional, alpha, leading male characters. I don’t think the film is defining or attempting to redefine masculinity, I think it is being very subjective to the relationship between [their characters] Lionel and David.”

The actor also spoke out against comparisons of the film to “Brokeback Mountain,” calling them “lazy and frustrating.” Several reviews of “The History of Sound,” including Variety‘s, drew a connection between the two films.

“I personally don...

‘The History of Sound’ Review: Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor Bring Aching Poignancy to Restrained but Heartfelt Queer Love Story
Image
Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor offer more proof that they are among the best contemporary actors we have in The History of Sound, a resonant account of a tender but too-fleeting gay love affair interrupted by World War I. Adapted by Ben Shattuck from his jewel-like short story of the same name, the film’s romance and heartache are intensified by the intimate experience the two men share of traveling the backwoods of Maine in 1919, collecting traditional folk tunes and ballads from rural people, essentially the equivalent in music of an oral history.

South African director Oliver Hermanus had a breakthrough in 2019 with Moffie, a searing indictment of institutionalized homophobia in the Apartheid-era military. He switched gears from the visceral physical and psychological violence of that film to a more subdued approach three years later with Living, a delicate adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1952 classic Ikiru, scripted by Kazuo Ishiguro...

Paul Mescal Seduces Cannes With Gay Romance ‘The History of Sound’
Image
Paul Mescal came to seduce Cannes, and it appears to be working.

The red-hot young star of The History of Sound received a warm welcome from the festival audience for the world premiere of Oliver Hermanus’ new film, in competition, in Cannes on Wednesday night.

Hermanus and Mescal walked the red-carpet while co-star Josh O’Conner didn’t make it to the Croisette for the History of Sound debut but is expected Friday for the premiere of Kelly Reichardt’s The Mastermind, in which he also stars.

Also walking the History of Sound carpet were castmembers Raphael Sbarge, Molly Price, Hadley Robinson, Emma Canning and Peter Mark Kendall as well as Fast & Furious star Michelle Rodriguez; John C. Reilly and Italian actor Alessandro Borghi, here with the neo-Western Heads or Tails? playing in Un Certain Regard; and Julian Assange, in town for the premiere of The 6 Billion Dollar Man,...

Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor Make Cannes Sob With Powerful Gay Romance ‘The History of Sound,’ Which Earns 6-Minute Standing Ovation
Image
Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor made Cannes Film Festival sob on Wednesday night with Oliver Hermanus’ “The History of Sound,” which earned a six-minute standing ovation.

While Mescal received a standing ovation when walking in, O’Connor had to miss the premiere because he was finishing filming his part in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film and couldn’t make it.

Though O’Connor wasn’t present, Mescal carried the weight. One rowdy fan screamed, “We love you, Paul!” seconds before the film started, when the audience usually sits in reverent silence. By the end, moviegoers were weeping and swatting at each other trying to get video of Mescal, who was also tearing up.

“This has been one of the most wonderful creative collaborations of my very, very short career, but this has been a testament to the genius of Paul Mescal,” said director Hermanus.

The film’s stark, gorgeous folk...

‘The History Of Sound’ Review: Paul Mescal And Josh O’Connor Make Beautiful Music Together In Moving Love Story – Cannes Film Festival
Image
On questionnaires for movie research screenings they always ask “Choose words that best describe the film.” Okay, here are the words I would write down to best encapsulate the new film The History of Sound which had its world premiere tonight in competition at the Cannes Film Festival: Meditative. Beautiful. Musical. Reflective. Heartbreaking. Love. Quiet. Soothing. Life Affirming. Haunting. Tasteful. Adult. Unforgettable.

The title makes it sound rather academic, but it certainly isn’t that. Perhaps more pointedly it should have been called The Sound of Music, but I think somebody already had that. Okay, how about The Sounds of Music? Actually the title they have fits perfectly once you get to the end, but will it sell tickets? That is the problem for the distributor (Mubi in North America; Universal/Focus Features international), but the film itself, directed by Oliver Hermanus and written by Ben Shattock from his own short story,...

Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 12 Is a Master Class in How Not to Get Away with Murder
Image
The award for dumbest murderer on Elsbeth goes to Lawrence “Larry” Grey. At least Matthew Broderick is somehow still charming, even as a killer.

Also, is the whole college admissions scam still a thing? And who in their right mind would start when the student is a toddler?

After so many big-name convictions, I would think people wouldn’t still be playing with fire. Then again, I’ve never been rich and powerful.

(Michael Parmelee/CBS)

As far as Elsbeth episodes, this one hit all the right marks with a bit of drama, a fistful of funny, and a pinch of intrigue right there at the end.

For a show about murder, it sure does manage to deliver a lot of good news and keep things surprisingly upbeat.

Granted, the killers of Elsbeth are not exactly genius masterminds. Still, Larry takes the cake with more rookie mistakes than anyone with...

Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 6 Review: Gold, Frankincense, and Murder
Image
What in the ho, ho, ho holidays did we just watch on what can only be described as the most chaotic and campy of Christmases for Elsbeth? I have two words for you: snow globes and loved ones’ ashes.

This episode had its stocking stuffed with holiday cheer and merry murder mayhem. From beginning to end, it was a laugh riot with some of the best running jokes of the season and so many shoutouts to previous episodes.

Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 6 was somehow a “howcatchem” and a murder mystery in one. Now, that is what I call an early Christmas present.

(Michael Parmelee/CBS)

So many moments had viewers asking themselves, “Did DeeDee kill Dirk, or was it a happy accident?” By “happy accident,” I meant she would’ve avoided being killed if she were innocent.

Alas, in the end, America’s Mrs. Claus turned out to be the Grinch that killed Christmas.

Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 6 Spoilers: It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Murder On Elsbeth
Image
It’s beginning to look a lot like homicide — I mean, Christmas on Elsbeth. This holiday season, snow won’t be the only thing falling around here. Get your ugly Christmas sweater on because it’s a special Elsbeth holiday episode.

You may have to watch the promo for “Gold, Frankincense, and Murder” to understand the reference above. Don’t worry because we are going to unpack what could be the campiest episode of the season.

That being said, Elsbeth has enough quirkiness for two shows. Couple that with some holiday cheer, and you have some certified yuletide mayhem.

(Michael Parmelee/CBS)

It may be the happiest time of the year, but let’s not forget the crowds, alcohol consumption, desperation, gift-giving pressure, emotional instability, and homes left vacant.

This is a tough time of year for many people, and someone always snaps. So, let’s all be thankful for...

Investigating The Investigators Of Elsbeth Season 2: Where Have We Seen These Detectives Before?
Image
When it comes to police procedurals, keeping things fresh and exciting is the key to success. Many shows try numerous tactics, but CBS‘s Elsbeth has created a unique advantage for itself.

As the series comes to the halfway point of its sophomore season, it’s fair to say there are endless guest appearances. Something that has indeed worked in the show’s favor.

Fans of Elsbeth have more than become accustomed to the revolving door of detectives.

(Michael Parmelee/CBS)

While we will likely still have more new faces down the road, we at least have a core group of investigators.

Now that a good handful of the detectives are buddying up with Elsbeth, it’s about time we get familiar with some of these wildly different but equally entertaining sleuths.

ABC Pilots Update: Drama ‘Acts Of Crime’, Comedies ‘Black Don’t Crack’, ‘Bucktown’ Not Moving Forward
Image
ABC has passed on three more pilots. Drama Acts of Crime and comedies Black Don’t Crack and Bucktown will not be picked up to series. They join comedy pilot Adopted, whose team was notified of ABC’s decision not to proceed with it Thursday night.

None of these pilots had stood out in the past months or so, with the frontrunners among ABC’s 2021 pilots produced before the upfronts, The Wonder Years, Queens, Maggie and Abbott Elementary all landing series pickups earlier today.

Meanwhile, several pilots were left in consideration for midseason, including Kevin Costner’s National Parks Investigation, which was filmed but not finished in time for the upfronts, drama pilots Epic, Promised Land and Dark Horse, which have not been shot, and off-cycle drama pilot Triage, which has undergone recuts with conflicting results.

Acts of Crime, written and directed by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, marked Esmail’s first foray into broadcast television.
