An Underrated Star Trek: The Original Series Episode Had A Darker Sequel Fans Have Forgotten
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

In the "Star Trek" episode "Miri", the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise beams down to a planet that, quite mysteriously, has the same continental layout as Earth. When Kirk (William Shatner), Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and Yeoman Rand (Grace Lee Whitney) beam down to investigate, they find a burned-out, post-apocalyptic wasteland. The only survivors are children, and Kirk will eventually learn that all the planet's adults were wiped out by a fatal virus centuries before. The virus also turned the adults mad, and they turned to badgering, hunting, and harming the planet's uninfected children. The children remember this time, and have come to see all adults as sinister and untrustworthy, calling them "grups," short for "grown-ups."

The same virus, as a side effect, also slowed the aging of the children, so they have been kids for over 300 years,...

10 Old-School Gangster Movies That Are Still Awesome Today
Image
Crime and gangster films have dominated Hollywood for nearly 100 years. These movies have drawn audiences in with stories of organized criminals and the worlds they swim in for almost the entire history of motion pictures.

Though the implementation of the Hays Code in 1934 meant that films were not allowed to show criminal activity without the "bad guys" getting their due, many of the best gangster movies are more than 50 years old. From the boom of crime films in the 1920s with iconic performers like James Cagney to the disillusion with the thrill of a life of crime in the late 1960s and early 1970s, gangster movies have been at the forefront of American cinema.

10 Christmas Movies Where The Villains Are People That Don't Believe In Santa Claus
Image
Santa Claus is very much one of the main characters when it comes to the holiday, but some Christmas films feature people who aren't fond of Old St. Nick. Also known as Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, and many, many more, the big guy in red has cropped up in many a holiday celebration, and therefore, many a holiday movie. Whether he's the actual Santa from the North Pole, or simply a representation of the idea of the Christmas spirit, his presence is what adds to the magic of the season.

There have been plenty of characters in Christmas films that have ended up on the Naughty List who didn't believe in his existence or refused to embrace the meaning of the holiday. Whether they're robbing houses and stealing presents from right under the tree, or spoiling the fun for everyone around, there are definitely quite a few characters who need...

10 Movies From The 1990s That Were Just Plain Weird
Image
The 1990s were a special time for creating some weird and downright bizarre films that pushed every boundary imaginable. It was a decade that started seeing a snowball effect in terms of the advancement of technology and techniques of special effects and visuals that helped provide an outlet for the filmmaker's wildest ideas. Before the time of big-budget franchises and endless sequels, studios were more likely to take risks both in terms of films with weird source material and the way the films were shot, which produced some incredible and extremely odd films.

Many of these movies took weirdness to new heights in almost every aspect of cinema to create some intense, thought-provoking, and mind-bending film experiences. Movies like the shocking Freaked, which presented some grotesque characters and haunting sequences, and Harmony Korines Gummo, which provides a unique and mostly horrifying snapshot of small-town America and its inhabitants. Many films...

10 Iconic Gangster Movie Quotes You Can't Get Out of Your Head
Image
Gangster movies have become a popular sub-genre over the years. The glimpse inside a fast-paced, dangerous world that a lot of people aren't part of is both thrilling and interesting. While it can be more gripping to watch such a movie that is based on real life, others that are total fiction have proven to be just as good. With the right creators, actors and script, gangster movies have the potential to make cinematic history.

The importance of great dialogue can't be underestimated. Not every scene in a gangster movie can be filled with action or violence. Oftentimes, the words can be just as intimidating, particularly when said by the right actor. The creators who have kept this in mind have delivered a stream of incredibly iconic quotes that fans simply cannot get out of their heads.

Bonnie and Clyde Were an Infamous Duo

Kris Kristofferson’s Talking Blues
Image
This story originally ran in an April 1974 issue of Rolling Stone.

In Peru, one kept a daily journal; now Kristofferson bends grinning over its pages, on which, in the winter of ’70, Andes mud spilled and dried like blood spots. “Hell,” he offers rurally, “wouldn’t surprise me none you said it was blood.”

One had gone there to write about the making, or rather, wresting from the soil, of Dennis Hopper’s The Last Movie; Kris, totally unknown then, was doing the film’s score. Rain hung over the Andes...

Almost None Of The Dialogue In Star Trek's Miri Was In The Original Script
Image
In the "Star Trek" episode "Miri", the Enterprise happens upon a distant planet whose geography, by mysterious coincidence, appears to mirror that of Earth's. The denizens of this parallel Earth appear to be human, although the planet had been nearly wiped out by a mysterious plague. The only survivors are the planet's children; the plague seems to coincide with puberty. The children live in fear of grown-ups -- nicknamed "grups" -- because they were once targeted out of spite by the world's dying adults and, as such, are suspicious of Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and his visiting away team.

Oh yes, and the children are all incredibly long-lived on this planet. The oldest of them appears to be 12, but is, in fact, over 300. Additionally, Kirk -- in a very unsavory twist -- has to use his masculine wiles on the titular 12-year-old Miri in order to convince her that adulthood won't be so bad,...

Al Ruddy, Oscar-Winning Producer of ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Million Dollar Baby,’ Dies at 94
Image
Al Ruddy, who co-created the famed CBS sitcom Hogan’s Heroes, then captured Academy Awards for producing the best picture winners The Godfather and Million Dollar Baby, has died. He was 94.

Ruddy, also credited as one of the creators of the long-running CBS police drama Walker, Texas Ranger, died Saturday following a brief illness at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center, a publicist announced.

On the heels of The Godfather (1972), Ruddy produced another box-office hit with the original The Longest Yard (1974), the prison-set football movie that starred Burt Reynolds. The pair then reteamed for the action road films The Cannonball Run (1981) and its 1984 sequel, both directed by stuntman-turned-helmer Hal Needham.

The personable Ruddy also produced such films as Bad Girls (1994), the first Western with all female leads (Madeleine Stowe, Mary Stuart Masterson, Andie MacDowell and Drew Barrymore); the baseball comedy The Scout (1994), starring Albert Brooks and Brendan Fraser; and Matilda (1978), a comedy...

Split Second: The Best Rutger Hauer Sci-Fi Movie You Never Saw
Image
In the 1980s, Hollywood didn’t quite know what to do with Rutger Hauer. The actor broke out in a pretty major way following his acclaimed turn in Paul Verhoeven’s Soldier of Orange, paving the way for his American debut in the Sylvester Stallone thriller Nighthawks, where he played the villain Wulfgar. His performance as Roy Batty in Blade Runner blew people away, and for a while, it looked like he might become the next big Hollywood heartthrob, especially when he signed on to star in the epic adventure film Ladyhawke opposite Michelle Pfeiffer for Richard Donner.

But major stardom didn’t happen? Why? Perhaps it was because the movies of Hauer’s that did best at the box office were the ones where he played the villain, such as The Hitcher. He was so unforgettable as a bad guy that when he played a hero, such as in...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Bonnie And Clyde
Image
The real Bonnie and Clyde may have died in 1933, but the legend of the couple's crime spree lives on in the form of songs, stories, and one groundbreaking movie. Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde" took Hollywood by storm when it hit theaters in 1967, generating controversy for its on-screen violence and sensuality -- and kick-starting nationwide conversations about who deserves to be the subject of a movie. While film fans still talk about these topics today, the movie's brutal final shootout feels mild compared to modern blood-soaked movie scenes.

Still, "Bonnie and Clyde" is a fantastic film, thanks in large part to its great cast. Warren Beatty plays cocky Clyde Barrow to Faye Dunaway's initially innocent Bonnie Parker, while actors Michael J. Pollard, Gene Hackman, and Estelle Parsons round out the Barrow gang. A young Gene Wilder made his big screen debut as one of Clyde's hostages, while Denver...

‘American Gothic’ – Weird and Underseen ’80s Slasher Turns 35
Image
By the time American Gothic had come out, horror fans were familiar with the “don’t go in the woods” trope. Trouble was, and still is, expected for anyone who trades city comforts for the great outdoors. John Hough’s 1988 slasher admittedly follows the same path taken by others before it. However, where many of these kinds of movies continue to complete the same old routine, American Gothic takes a delightfully twisted turn that helps it stand out, even after all these years.

With a tagline like “The family that slays together, stays together,” it’s not hard to figure out where American Gothic is heading. The classic poster art, a dark parody of Grant Wood’s famous painting, even puts Yvonne De Carlo and Rod Steiger’s villainous characters front and center. Yet before they show up, viewers first meet Cynthia (Sarah Torgov), the movie’s ostensible Final Girl.

Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland (1989) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Massacre au camp d'été 3 (1989)
It’s time for a new episode of the Real Slashers video series, and with this one we’re looking back at the 1989 release Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland (watch it Here). You can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above!

Directed by Michael A. Simpson from a screenplay written by Fritz Gordon (a.k.a. Michael Hitchcock), Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland started filming three days after Sleepaway Camp 2 wrapped. This one has the following synopsis: Psychotic Angela is itching to do what she does best: slaughter dozens of teenage campers. As luck would have it, the previous site of her murders has been renamed and converted into an experimental summer camp meant to bring together privileged and lower-class teens. On the day the youths are boarding the buses to camp, Angela runs over a potential camper with a garbage truck and assumes her identity.

Gene Hackman Is The Best Actor Ever
Image
We took Gene Hackman for granted, and he's making us pay for it.

Between 1964 and 2004, there wasn't a more reliably excellent film actor in the industry. He'd knock out two or three (or more!) movies a year, and even when they were dire propositions — like the Kryptonite-ridden "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace" or Bob Clark's laugh-free buddy-cop comedy "Loose Cannons" — you knew Hackman would be present and compelling. He also never went too long between watchable films, so the charge that he was phoning it in (which was also leveled at his prolific contemporary Michael Caine) never made sense.

Hackman was — and, oh, how I hate to refer to this still-very-alive master's career in the past tense — a true working actor. He was grateful for the gigs and took them eagerly. He knew what it was to not only struggle but to be told there is no future...

House of 1000 Corpses image shows Sid Haig in the lost alternate ending
Image
A couple days ago, writer/director Rob Zombie shared an image from the alternate ending to his feature directorial debut House of 1000 Corpses (watch it Here). An ending that would have shown Sid Haig’s character Captain Spaulding giving a ride to final girl Denise (Erin Daniels) in his Museum of Monsters and Madmen truck. In the film, Spaulding gave Denise a ride in a convertible – and Otis (Bill Moseley) was revealed to be in the backseat. In the deleted ending, Denise would’ve been dragged into the back of the truck by Spaulding’s pal Ravelli (Irwin Keyes). Zombie has now shared another image from the alternate ending that shows Haig and Daniels in the truck, before Ravelli emerges from the back.

Unfortunately, it’s not likely we’ll ever see footage of this alternate ending, because all of the cut scenes were lost while the movie was passed from studio to studio.

House of 1000 Corpses: Rob Zombie shares an image from the alternate ending
Image
The screenplay for Rob Zombie’s feature directorial debut House of 1000 Corpses (watch it Here) can be found online, and is quite different from the film that made it to theatres in 2003. Not only was Grampa Hugo revealed to be Dr. Satan, but there are scenes in the script that were filmed and cut – and Zombie has no access to the footage, as it was lost while the movie was passed from studio to studio. Among the differences is an alternate ending… and Zombie took to Instagram to share a rare still from the film’s original ending! In this image, we see Captain Spaulding’s Museum of Monsters and Madmen truck:

John Trent
Canada’s isolated countrysides are fertile territory for thrillers like John Trent’s Sunday in the Country where Ernest Borgnine fends off a trio of violent thugs before revealing his own bloodthirsty tendencies. Michael J. Pollard plays the lead psychopath and Hollis McLaren is Borgnine’s granddaughter. Trent wrote the screenplay with Robert Maxwell (TV’s Adventures of Superman!).

‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ will make Oscar history with at least two Best Supporting Actor nominations
Image
Four of the featured fellows in “The Trial of the Chicago 7” — Sacha Baron Cohen, Frank Langella, Eddie Redmayne and Mark Rylance — made the BAFTAs longlist of 15 contenders for Best Supporting Actor. We are predicting that Cohen, who also reaped Golden Globes and SAG bids, will earn a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. Rylance, who won this award in 2015 for “Bridge of Spies,” is jockeying for the fifth slot.

Four-time Tony winner Langella and Redmayne, who took home the Best Actor Oscar in 2014 for “The Theory of Everything,” are longer shots than another of the supporting actors in the film: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II makes our Top 10 for his searing portrayal of Bobby Seale.

Since the supporting acting categories were introduced in 1937, 19 films have reaped bids for at least two of their male featured players. As you can see from the list below, it took till the ninth time that this...

Rutger Hauer's Split Second Is Making Its Long-Awaited Blu-Ray Debut This Summer
Image
Horror lovers and moviegoers of the early 90s will remember seeing the trailer for Split Second, though perhaps they never saw the actual movie itself. Rutger Hauer was at the precipice of his fame, and it seemed like you couldn't walk into a theater throughout 1991 and 1992, to see any given movie, without having to sit through the sci-fi horror alien madness that is this cult favorite. And then, it was also tacked to the front of a bunch of VHS releases. Perhaps missing from some collectors' collections here in 2020, Mvd is making sure you don't go a second longer without this fine piece of celluloid sitting on your shelf. And it comes packed with all-new extras.

Mvd Entertainment is proud to announce the North American High Definition debut of the 1992 Sci-fi action cult classic Split Second on Blu-ray in an ultimate Collector's Edition.

Academy Responds To Complaints About Oscars In Memoriam Snubs – Update
Kobe Bryant
Updated with Academy statement: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has responded to complaints about the exclusion of some entertainment figures from its annual In Memoriam segment on Sunday’s Oscar telecast.

“The Academy receives hundreds of requests to include loved ones and industry colleagues in the Oscars In Memoriam segment,” the organization said in a statement obtained by Deadline. “An executive committee representing every branch considers the list and makes selections for the telecast based on limited available time. All of the submissions are included on Oscar.com and will remain on the site throughout the year.”

Previously: Kobe Bryant led off the Oscar telecast’s In Memoriam segment and Kirk Douglas was the last film personality it honored.

The annual portion late in the show, introduced this time by Steven Spielberg and accompanied by a rendition of “Yesterday” by Grammy winner Billie Eilish, appeared to avoid major controversy.

In amongst the various awards, acceptance speeches and musical interludes, the ceremony reflects on those whom we have lost over the past year in the 'In Memoriam' montage that is sure to bring a few tears to your eyes. Luke Perry
Luke Perry was not recognized at the 2020 Oscars.
