‘Murderbot’ Creators Defend Robot’s Decision to Ditch Its Found Family in Finale
Image
[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Murderbot Episode 10, “The Perimeter.”] The finale of Murderbot saw the title robot (Alexander Skarsgård) wake up to have its memory wiped by the Company, a new governor module installed, and a client assignment of the worst order. By the end, though, it was freer than ever. In the episode, Dr. Mensah (Noma Dumezweni) worked furiously to secure its release by the corporation’s reluctant board, with Gurathin (David Dastmalchian), Pin-Lee (Sabrina Wu), Arada (Tattiawna Jones), and Bharadwaj (Tamara Podemski) all pitching in to make the case for their claim to it. However, the damage was already done — when Ratthi (Akshay Khanna) saw “SecUnit” out and about, it was fully unaware of their shared history and followed orders to pull a weapon on him right then and there. Mensah didn’t want to give up, though; she refused to believe the data had been completely erased. That proved to be somewhat...

Image
Apple TV+ is giving Murderbot another chance to keep watching its favorite shows by renewing the series for a second season. The announcement came just a day before the first season’s finale, which will air on July 11.

The show stars Alexander Skarsgård as Murderbot, a security robot who has secretly gained free will. While it’s supposed to protect its human clients on dangerous missions, Murderbot mostly wants to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its own identity.

This series is based on All Systems Red, the first book in Martha Wells’ Murderbot Diaries series, which has won major awards like the Hugo and Nebula. Chris and Paul Weitz adapted the book for the screen and also run the show.

Murderbot Episode 10 review: "The Perimeter" is an unpredictable, emotional farewell
Image
It's been quite a journey, but at last we've arrived at the season finale of Murderbot, Apple's sci-fi series based on The Muderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. After nine episodes of drama on a remote planet, the Preservation Alliance team and the SecUnit played by Alexander Skarsgård have returned to civilization. But it comes with plenty of its own perils, especially for Murderbot.

The thrilling penultimate episode of the season saw the SecUnit make a heroic sacrifice, shielding Doctor Mensah (Noma Dumezweni) with its own body as they fell from a cliff in order to save her life. When last we saw it, the SecUnit was powering down from catastrophic damage, its mission to stop the nefarious GrayCris team from killing PresAux accomplished.

In "The Perimeter," we find out what happens next. It's an emotional, dramatic finish to the season that had me on the edge of my seat...

Murderbot Renewed For Season 2 At Apple TV+ Before Season 1 Finale Drops
Image
Despite delivering a lot less killer android action than its title may have led us to believe we'd be getting, Paul and Chris Weitz's Murderbot has won us over with its mordant funniness, absorbing off-kilter vibe, and inspired central performance from star Alexander Skarsgård. More importantly though, it's clearly won over the execs at its Apple TV+ home, too. Yes, ahead of the sci-fi comedy's Season 1 finale landing on the streamer tomorrow, Apple confirmed just this afternoon that Murderbot has already been recommissioned for Season 2.

Adapted from the first book in speculative fiction author Martha Wells' bestselling The Murderbot Diaries series, the first season of the Weitz brothers' show has followed Skarsgård's titular self-hacking security construct as he struggles to hide his newfound free-will and to reconcile his general apathy towards humans with an ever-growing interest in the species and his own burgeoning humanity. But while it's been a...

Murderbot Season 2 Is Coming, But The Sci-Fi Series Faces One Major Challenge
Image
There's some great news for fans of the Apple TV+ sci-fi comedy series "Murderbot," though it's sadly not a spin-off that's entirely just full-length episodes of "Sanctuary Moon." We'll still probably get more chances to see our favorite fictional space soap opera, however, as Apple has announced that "Murderbot" has been greenlit for a second season. That's right folks, we're talking more murder, more bot, and more of star Alexander Skarsgård absolutely killing it as an awkward weirdo robot who just wants to watch his shows in peace instead of getting dragged into human nonsense.

The show, based on the first novella in Martha Wells' "The Murderbot Diaries" series, is a tremendous amount of fun with a terrific ensemble cast that helps make Skarsgård's dryness work and makes this unbelievable world feel more real. There's just one teensy problem for fans who have gotten attached to the scrappy hippies from...

Murderbot Episode 8 review: "Foreign Object" reveals secrets but struggles with exposition
Image
We're hurtling toward an exciting conclusion on Apple TV+'s Murderbot. After last week's episode gave the SecUnit and PresAux team some time out in the wilderness, they're forced to head back to the habitat — and towards the climactic events of the book, All Systems Red.

Murderbot has been a delight to watch each week, but there's an undercurrent of tension to "Foreign Object" that makes it hard to fully relax, no matter how effective the punch lines are. Things have gotten dangerous for our team of hippie scientists, and Murderbot is thinking hard about whether it's even worth it to keep protecting them when they seem so determined to paint him as a bad guy. And can you blame it? Humans are so ungrateful.

Beware Full Spoilers ahead for "Foreign Object."

Murderbot Episode 6 review: "Command Feed" brings out the best and worst in Murderbot
Image
We've officially crossed the halfway point in the first season of Murderbot on Apple TV+, and things are starting to get pretty dicey for Murderbot (Alexander Skarsgård), Doctor Mensah (Noma Dumezweni), and the rest of the PresAux survey team. Last week's episode ended with another cliffhanger, as Murderbot and Mensah's hopper was caught in an explosion from their sabotaged emergency beacon. Their shuttle has crashed, and now they'll have to work together to get back to safety.

Meanwhile, Gurathin (David Dastmalchian), Bharadwaj (Tomara Podemski), Arada (Tattiawna Jones), Pin-Lee (Sabrina Wu), and Ratthi (Akshay Khanna) find out that there's more to the DeltFall refugee Leebeebee (Anna Konkle) than they thought. By the end of the episode, it all comes crashing back together as Murderbot is forced to finally do a bit of murdering.

Full Spoilers for Murderbot Episode 6 ahead.

Murderbot stars find it "very comforting" that author Martha Wells is a producer
Image
We're deep into the first season of Murderbot on Apple TV+, and the hits keep coming. In the fifth episode of the series, our reluctantly heroic SecUnit played by Alexander Skarsgård was brought back from the brink by the Preservation Alliance team after it sacrificed itself to save them from a rogue SecUnit at the ruined DeltFall habitat. This led to some frank conversations where Murderbot's biggest secret finally came out. But by the time the credits rolled, it was once more in a dire situation as the emergency beacon it was flying toward with Doctor Mensah (Noma Dumezweni) exploded, causing their shuttle to crash. Can't a Murderbot catch a break?

The show is excelling at these sorts of quick, catchy cliffhangers. Thank goodness we've still got five more episodes of the series left to go.

The cast has been out there drumming up excitement for the show and...

‘Murderbot’ Episode 5 Review: Ping, Boom, Panic – Another Day in the Dysfunctional Galaxy
Image
“I’m not a good person. I’m just a bot with access to way too many serials and not enough patience for idiots.” If Alexander Skarsgård’s Murderbot could write its own diary, I bet that’s how it would start. But lucky for you, I’m the one doing the talking: fully human, mildly caffeinated, and hopelessly addicted to sarcastic sci-fi.

Episode 5 of Murderbot, coyly titled Rogue War Tracker Infinite, isn’t just another 22-29 minutes of quirky robot-human bonding and interstellar drama; it’s a full-blown therapy session wrapped in dry humor, trust issues, and enough passive-aggressive dialogue to make Jane Austen roll over and take notes.

From rogue bots with god complexes to ‘woke’ humans flexing their liberal arts degrees at the worst times to Leebeebee and her questionable trauma response, this episode delivers both laughs and existential dread like a perfectly malfunctioning delivery drone.

Add in some betrayal,...

Murderbot Episode 5 review: the truth comes out in "Rogue War Tracker Infinite"
Image
Believe it or not, we're officially halfway through the first season of Murderbot on Apple TV+. The fourth episode ended with a bang, as the SecUnit played by Alexander Skarsgård was forced to shoot itself in the chest before a malicious override module could force it to kill all its friends. Is this the end for our reluctant hero?

Of course not! "Rogue War Tracker Infinite" picks up with Murderbot in the medbay of the PresAux habitat, where the rest of the team is hard at work repairing it. Which it thinks is a pretty stupid idea, since it doesn't particularly trust them to do the job well and the tendrils from the override module are still embedded in its system. But hey, who can blame Murderbot for having some trust issues?

Beware full spoilers ahead for Murderbot Episode 5, "Rogue War Tracker Infinite."

In the third episode of the first season, “Risk Assessment,” the PreservationAux goes looking for something completely unprepared.

‘Murderbot’ Review: Alexander Skarsgård’s Goofy-Great Apple Series Wants Us to Watch TV, Together
Image
Alexander Skarsgård — the six-foot-four Swedish actor you may know from playing one of two Northmen — is a giant, beautiful weirdo. Those less familiar with his work as a bloodthirsty creature of the night (or his character in “True Blood”) may only see a classic Hollywood hunk — the kind of guy who could conceivably marry Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst; who looks like he was built by Hasbro to sell Tarzan action figures but can still slap on a tuxedo and win the red carpet; who can convincingly step onscreen as a soldier or a doctor or an international man of mystery.

The Alexander Stangårds out there know better. They know the star’s mysterious allure sparks from within. They know his characters range from terrifying monsters to hilarious parodies of those monsters to something indefinable in between. They know even when he plays himself, he’ll somehow end up jerking...

Murderbot hits the ground running with fun, engaging two-episode premiere
Image
Today, Apple TV+ premiered the first two episodes of Murderbot, its new sci-fi comedy based on The Murderbot Diaries books by Martha Wells. The series stars Alexander Skarsgård as the titular Murderbot, a security construct (SecUnit) who has hacked its own governor module and gained free will. No longer will it obey humans! Its destiny is now its own to decide!

Except Murderbot doesn't quite know what to do with this free will, so it binge watches television shows and keeps quietly working for a group of hippy scientists from the Preservation Alliance, who take it along for security on their latest survey mission.

If you can't tell from that description, Murderbot is a very fun show. It's created by Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz, brothers who have worked on comedies like American Pie and About A Boy as well as genre fare like The Golden Compass and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Murderbot episode 1 throws you right into the intriguing sci-fi world (Review)
Image
I feel like sci-fi thriller comedy shows aren't very common, but if done right they can be really interesting and entertaining. So far based on Apple TV+'s new show that falls in that category, Murderbot, the series definitely fits that bill. Two episodes dropped on premiere day, with one installment released each week of the 10-episode season.

The show is based on author Martha Wells' book series of the same name, starring Alexander Skarsgård as a security unit robot tasked with protecting the PreservationAux team who are on an expedition on an unknown planet. While it's there to protect them, SecUnit would rather watch its soap operas. Here's our review of Murderbot episode 1, "FreeCommerce!" Spoilers Below.

Alexander Skarsgård in Apple TV+'s Murderbot.

We're introduced to Murderbot itself from the very first scene, fed up with having to protect people. Especially those who are disrespectful. That's because the units...
