Immediately after last night’s star-studded dedication of The Steven Spielberg Theater, Universal Studios’ brand-new. state-of-the-art movie showcase, I spoke to the legendary director himself about this moment. He still was stunned by this honor at the studio that started his remarkable career.
“I have never had anything like this before. I have had my name on things but never a movie theater in the home of my career birthplace,” Spielberg told me on the third-floor patio just outside the magnificent new exhibition the studio has created with his films made for Universal. “It is one of the greatest honors ever given to me, to have my name on a theater on this particular film lot because the history of this studio is legendary. I am hoping that every single movie that plays here is a really good movie, but when movies play in this theater that aren’t very...

Rachel Zegler, like many young women coming up in Hollywood, is unfortunately no stranger to online negativity, though the starlet says she doesn’t let it get to her by reframing her perspective away from a “victim mindset.”
In a new cover story with British mag i-d, Zegler — who is currently starring in the London West End revival of Evita helmed by Jamie Lloyd, to stupendous reviews — discussed how tabloid media and online communities have overly scrutinized her and her behavior in the public eye, whether for being outspoken or simply for being cast in a project.
“It’s interesting,” she said of the opinions people share about her on social media, before adding, “It’s really alarming at times.”
In 2021, as she was cast as the title princess in Snow White, the West Side Story actress (who is of Colombian and Polish descent) faced hatred from right-wing social media users about her Latinx background.

When Dreamworks released the animated feature “How to Train Your Dragon” in 2010, it seemed almost inevitable that a live-action feature would come along.
Cinematographer Roger Deakins gave the feature a stunning cinematic style that felt almost live-action, and composer John Powell added a sweeping score to the narrative.
Director Dean DeBlois heard a live-action movie was in the works, and he called Powell. The animated feature was not only beloved, but it had also become part of pop culture history. His first call asked Powell, “Should we do a live-action?” Powell says, DeBlois next said, “Well, if I do it, would you do it?”
Powell said yes. After spending over a decade scoring all three films in the animated feature trilogy, Powell felt a sense of responsibility to the music of the franchise. And who better to do it than he to breathe new life into a beloved score?

Dean DeBlois returns to the fantasy world of Vikings and dragons with a live-action remake of his original How to Train Your Dragon. While many are concerned that the film is a retread of the original with live actors, our own Tyler Nichols enjoyed the film despite the concerns. He mentions in his review, “There’s always plenty of debate whenever one of these live-action adaptations of a cartoon releases. No matter what filmmakers do, there’s always going to be a sect of people who disapprove. As proven by Lilo & Stitch, I am not one of those people, and simply want the cartoon translated to real life. That means there are going to be some changes because, let’s face it, cartoons don’t have to deal with logic in the same way.”

Domestic box office estimates for this week’s opening of the live-action adaptation of Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon are between $65 million-$75 million-plus at 4,000 theaters, and don’t be shocked if this beloved title overperforms.
This isn’t Gus Van Sant’s take on Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, meaning a shot-for-shot version of the original 2010 movie — and that’s even with original Httyd architect Dean DeBlois behind the camera. There’s a lot of heart and there’s a lot of flying swoops that set this live-action reboot apart (even if Toothless the Dragon looks similar to his animated version), not to mention Mason Thames and Nico Parker’s respective turns as Hiccup and Astrid; the duo take entire ownership of the characters. No carbon copies here.

Lilo and Stitch has proven that there's still plenty of life in Disney's live-action remakes of animated classics, but the recent reimagining of one of the Mouse House's most popular and well-known tales was a rare misfire.
Snow White arrives on Disney+ tomorrow, and has officially finished up its box office run as one of Disney's worst performing live-action remakes.
The movie, which stars Rachel Zegler in the title role and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, ended its theatrical run with $205.5 million worldwide. Only 2016's Pete's Dragon ($143.7 million and 2020's Mulan ($69.9 million) - which, to be fair, debuted during Covid with a simultaneous Premier Access streaming release - have fared worse.
Snow White received mostly negative reviews (40% on Rotten Tomatoes), but was plagued by controversy (whether it was warranted or not is up for debate) in the build-up to its release, which probably didn't help.
Be it Zegler's comments about the animated original,...

DreamWorks and Universal’s live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” launched in South Korea on June 6 and immediately took first place on the charts, dethroning local hit Hi-Five over the June 6-8 frame. According to the Korean Film Council’s ticketing network, the Viking adventure commanded a 31.2 percent real-time reservation share on opening morning, backed by more than 102,000 presold tickets. Industry watchers estimate the picture drew about 550,000 admissions across its debut weekend, setting it up for a possible 1.8–2 million-ticket run.
Pre-release momentum had been building for weeks: the film opened its international rollout in Korea two full weeks ahead of the U.S. launch, part of a schedule that began May 30 for overseas markets. Universal’s strategy echoes Disney’s staggered campaigns for recent remakes and gives Dragon a clear runway before Pixar’s Elio enters the global conversation. U.S. tracking suggests the picture could deliver an $80-100 million domestic opening,...

With the first Wicked: For Good trailer released online, the forthcoming movie is aiming to be as popular as the first one.
Universal Pictures shared the trailer for director Jon M. Chu’s feature that hits theaters Nov. 21 and stars Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. The actresses graced the CinemaCon stage in April for the studio’s presentation to exhibitors, where the Wicked: For Good footage was initially screened.
Wicked: For Good centers on the two witches facing the consequences of their previous decisions and its impact on their friendship. The footage teases the first look at Dorothy, albeit without revealing her face, and also includes the yellow brick road, a wedding and no shortage of flying monkeys.
“Elphaba, they’re coming for you,” Glinda warns near the end of the trailer.
Rounding out the cast are Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum.

A Doctor Who story scrapped from the classic series is finally being produced 35 years later. Big Finish has announced a full-cast audio drama based on the lost Doctor Who serial "Alixion."
Robin Mukherjee was set to make history as the first person of color to write a Doctor Who story in a planned 1990 season that was axed by the BBC amidst falling ratings. The Seventh Doctor Serial would have seen "The Professor" (McCoy) and his companion Ace (Sophie Aldred) checking into a luxury spa, only to find themselves in the middle of another intergalactic entity's bid for interplanetary domination. This being, known as The Queen of the Hive, is able to exploit The Doctor and Ace's own memories by using their darkest fears in order to steal the Time Lord's regenerative life force.

The new Elle Woods is out and about in new set images from the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series. Lexi Minetree, who was handpicked by original star Reese Witherspoon to portray the younger version of the character, is clad head-to-toe in pink in the new images, which come via Backgrid. The prequel series, Elle, is set to stream on Prime Video. The images portray the high-school-aged Woods on a shopping trip with a group of friends, all wearing distinctly 1990s fashions. That's in keeping with the series' timeframe, which will depict the high school years of Woods before the events of the 2001 movie, which saw her head off to law school and prove to be surprisingly adept at jurisprudence.
The film subsequently spawned one theatrical sequel, a failed TV pilot, and a Broadway musical. The role launched Witherspoon to superstardom, and remains one of her most iconic roles. In the images,...

2024 was a soft hum for the industry, but this year is already off to an operatic start. How could Hollywood resist pushing a bunch of sequels down our throats? If last year was an appetizer, with Inside Out 2 and the Deadpool/Wolverine tag team, 2025 is arriving with far more plump (just look at what the Minecraft film was able to do) and impossible missions.
Superheroes are obviously back, as they have continued to do so for the last decade. James Gunn’s Superman will be figuring out life again, and with Marvel’s Phase V coming to an end with Thunderbolts*, the new Fantastic Four reboot will hope to erase the sour taste of its previous attempts.
Maybe this time they’ll get it right? Our fingers remain crossed. James Cameron, meanwhile, isn’t done with blue aliens either, and Avatar 3 will likely demand another three hours of your...

Disney's Snow White remake starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot had its fair share of controversy. Following a series of successful live-action versions of the Disney animated fairy tales, Snow White was a complete disappointment, both critically and commercially.
The film's controversy dates to its early days, as Disney received backlash over Zegler's casting as the titular character, and its problems have continued since. The movie received poor reviews from the critics and is a long way from making a profit. However, Disney's Snow White made one last effort and reached its final milestone as it surpassed $200 million worldwide, per The Numbers.
The new adaptation is based on the 1937 animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The story follows the journey of the first Disney princess to save herself after the Evil Queen asked a hunter to kill her after the Magic Mirror told her she was prettier than her.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament has returned, and as you’ll see from the most profitable films of 2024 that we’re about to disclose, a movie’s game doesn’t end at the box office. Rather, its downstream revenues and subsequent home windows must be taken into account. Streaming continues to be a wildcard: While traditional motion picture studios such as Disney, Warner Bros, Sony, Paramount and Universal rely on lucrative pay two and pay three streamer deals to catapult their slates into the black, those streamers who’ve embraced theatrical (specifically Amazon MGM Studios and Apple Original Films) have a clandestine metric as to how they evaluate a movie’s post-cinema success. By traditional studio P&l standards, some of those releases would be considered flops. Given that, Apple and Amazon are excluded from this year’s survey. The Most Valuable Blockbuster series runs later rather than sooner as...

As if Disney's live-action Snow White remake wasn't experiencing enough box office woes, the movie has now been banned completely in one particular region.
According to Variety, Snow White has been banned from playing in all movie theaters in Lebanon due to the involvement of Evil Queen actress Gal Gadot, who is said to be on the country's "boycott list."
Lebanon’s Interior Minister Ahmad Al-Hajjar reportedly ordered the ban after being prompted to take action by the country’s film and media watchdog amid Israel’s ongoing attacks on Hezbollah. However, Beirut-based Middle East distributor Italia Films believes that the ban would have happened anyway, as Gadot has long been on Lebanon’s “Israel boycott list” and no movie in which she appears in has ever been released there.
The Wonder Woman star has been an open supporter of Israel, and served in the Israel Defense Forces (as her...

Disney’s “Snow White” has been banned from playing in movie theaters in Lebanon as star Gal Gadot is on the country’s boycott list, according to local media reports.
Local newspaper An-Nahar reported that the ban was ordered by Lebanon’s Interior Minister Ahmad al-Hajjar, who made the decision amid Israel’s ongoing attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon, which have killed civilians.
Gadot, who portrays The Evil Queen in the live-action remake, was born in Israel and served in the Israel Defense Forces. She has been an outspoken advocate for the country since the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks.
“Never did I imagine that on the streets of the United States, and different cities around the world, we would see people not condemning Hamas, but celebrating, justifying and cheering on a massacre of Jews,” Gadot said in a March 4 speech at the Anti-Defamation League’s annual summit in New York City.

Lebanon has banned Disney’s Snow White remake from playing in cinemas because Israeli actress Gal Gadot, one of the film’s stars, is on the country’s boycott list.
Ahmad Hajjar, Lebanon’s Interior Minister, recommended the ban, according to local newspaper An-Nahar.
Gadot stars as the Evil Queen in Snow White. The actress was born in Israel and prior to becoming a model and actress, served in the Israel Defense Forces, as her native country mandates it. Gadot has been a prominent supporter of Israel since October 7 and the country’s subsequent military campaign in Gaza. During an impassioned speech at the Anti-Defamation League’s summit in 2024, she said: “Never did I imagine that on the streets of the United States, and different cities around the world, we would see people not condemning Hamas, but celebrating, justifying and cheering on a massacre of Jews.”
