Golden Globes: ‘Wicked’ Wins Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Honor
Image
Delivering another huge boost for musicals, Universal’s Wicked took home the award for best cinematic and box office achievement at the 2025 Golden Globes after wowing audiences across the globe over the year-end holidays. It’s only the second time the honor has been handed out in an effort to make sure more populist movies are recognized.

Wicked, from director Jon M. Chu and veteran Hollywood producer Marc Platt, has smashed numerous records since debuting over Thanksgiving and is a major win for top Universal and NBCUniversal exec Donna Langley. Through Sunday, it has earned $644 million globally, making it the top-grossing Broadway musical adaptation of all time after passing up Mamma Mia!. It had previously achieved the same milestone domestically, where it has earned $432 million to date.

In appropriate fashion, Vin Diesel of Fast & Furious fame was tasked with announcing the winner at Sunday night’s telecast. He noted...

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Tell All on ‘Wicked’ Oscar Buzz, Queer Glinda, That Viral Press Tour and What to Expect From Part 2
Image
Seeing Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in action is a remarkable study in contrasts. Even after months of their omnipresence on social media and TV screens — as fans have consumed every morsel of the ongoing press tour for their film “Wicked,” in which tears have been shed — it’s hard not to be mesmerized as the London-born theater actor and the Boca Raton-born pop singer, newly minted co-stars, pose for photographs in a New York City studio in early December. Erivo is stoic, silent, channeling the power of her character Elphaba, though once she’s off-camera she lets loose watching her director Jon M. Chu take solo shots: “Give me Calvin Klein, Jon!” she shouts. “C’mon, profile! Work!” And on cue, Chu grows half an inch taller, straightening his spine and adjusting the tilt of his chin.

Grande, on the other hand, seems never to stop singing, harmonizing to...

Breaking Baz: ‘Wicked’s Jon M. Chu On Unlocking The Musical For The Big Screen And How Casting Cynthia Erivo As Elphaba Was “Like A Coup”
Image
Exclusive: Jon M. Chu learned to use his power in the right way — just as Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba does in Wicked.

Chu says that after 15 years working with studios he knew “how the machine works” because otherwise, he says, it’s very easy to get “overwhelmed by the pressures of fans, by the pressure of the studio, by spending money, by pressures of people who originated the parts …so I already have a sort of resilience to that.”

He says that he knew with Wicked that he “had to follow my instincts, and I knew how to manipulate the studio to get the right money, to get the right resources.”

After all, he asserts, “I’m protecting them in my mind. You have gold in your hands. This is an IP that’s never been out onto the screen…”

Chu claps his hands and reveals the pitch he made to top executives at Universal.

There's a new scene in Wicked: For Good that Stephen Schwartz "always wanted to do"
Image
Just like Galinda dropping the precious "a" from her name, Stephen Schwartz knows that sometimes, things need to be cut for the greater good. In the case of musical writing, that meant that certain ideas he really loved never found their way into the original production of Wicked. Now, he has a second chance.

Doctor Who's Movie Got The Daleks Badly Wrong, Even Though They Never Appear
Image
The 1996 Doctor Who TV movie got the Daleks badly wrong, even though they don't appear. The BBC canceled Doctor Who in 1989, but the world's longest-running science-fiction TV show still had so many fans - including those in the industry itself. Philip Segal successfully negotiated a partnership between Fox and the BBC that led to the release of a TV movie in 1996, intended as a backdoor pilot for a relaunch. The Doctor Who TV movie was sadly a failure, but it wasn't due to lack of effort or ambition.

The Doctor Who TV movie featured Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor and Eric Roberts as the newest iteration of the Master. Naturally, though, the Daleks simply had to appear in some capacity - even though negotiating the right to use the Daleks was fiendishly complex. They were ultimately woven into the story's introduction, which revealed the Master had been put on...

Extraction Director Sam Hargrave To Helm Live-Action Shinobi Video Game Movie At Universal
Image
With the likes of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic The Hedgehog doing big business in the multiplexes and The Last Of Us and Fallout receiving critical acclaim on TV, stock in video game adaptations has never been higher. Hell, even Minecraft is about to get the cinematic treatment! And now, according to Deadline, Universal and Sega are looking to capitalise on the genre boom with a live-action take on ninja hack-and-slash classic Shinobi. And that's not all, either — Extraction director Sam Hargrave is set to direct it.

Chronicling modern day ninja Joe Musashi's battles with the forces of evil, the Shinobi series — which comprises 14 mainline and spin-off entries to date, with another on the way — has long-since been an IP on Hollywood's mind. Wicked's Runtime Shows How The Movie Can Improve The Broadway Musical
Image
Wicked's reported runtime is a major green flag, signaling how the movie adaptation can take the core ingredients from Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz and conjure up something even more magical. Given the mammoth success of the stage show, news of an upcoming Wicked movie adaptation was hardly a surprise when reports surfaced in the early 2010s. Wholly more surprisingly was the subsequent update that Wicked would be split into two distinct parts, the first releasing in November 2024 and the continuation following a year later.

According to a more recent update, Wicked Part One's runtime clocks in at a relatively hefty two hours, 40 minutes - almost as long as the original musical Wicked is based on, which lasts a scant five minutes more. That number is slightly north of 2012's Les Miserables movie, and also beats Chicago (1h 53m), Cats (1h 50m), and Steven Spielberg's West Side Story...

‘Wicked’ Shifts Earlier In November, Dates Against ‘Gladiator II’: Is Another ‘Barbenheimer’ Box Office Weekend In Store?
Image
Universal’s massive musical tentpole bet Wicked originally was dated to go head-to-head with Disney Animation’s five-quad movie Moana 2 on Wednesday, November 27, the day before Thanksgiving, but will now go five days earlier on Friday, Nov. 22. A very smart release date change.

Both movies are aimed at females. But Wicked counts a fanbase of a reported 30M people from around the globe who’ve seen the Stephen Schwartz stage show. Not to mention, it’s the first of two parts — this movie has to work. Uni isn’t plotting a Horizon scenario here.

The new earlier date puts it up against Paramount’s Gladiator II, creating potentially a Barbenheimer moment: One highly anticipated big movie aimed at dudes, the other at females. There’s a lot of box office upside with both movies ahead of the Thanksgiving break, and, as we saw over the Barbenheimer weekend, moviegoers will watch both.

‘Wicked’ Film Moves Up November Release
Image
Wicked fans won’t have to wait quite as long as expected to watch Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical.

Universal Pictures announced Monday that director Jon M. Chu’s musical feature will hit theaters Nov. 22. The film has moved up from its previously scheduled release on Nov. 27, the day before Thanksgiving, with the new date giving the movie more time to build word of mouth heading into the holiday corridor. The new date also allows it to avoid Disney’s Moana 2.

It will now compete against Paramount’s Gladiator II, which also hits theaters Nov. 22 and stars Paul Mescal in Ridley Scott’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning 2000 historical epic.

Wicked adapts the Tony-winning Broadway musical of the same name, which is itself based on author Gregory Maguire’s 1995 book, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

Jon M. Chu Discusses Meeting Cynthia Erivo for the First Time, Seeing Her Perform ‘Defying Gravity’ and Her Allyship to the Api Community
Image
This weekend, “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo will receive the Gold Ally honor at the Gold House Gold Gala, and filmmaker Jon M. Chu will present the award to her.

Ahead of the Gala, Chu spoke with Variety celebrating his leading lady. He recalls the first time he met her over Zoom while casting for his upcoming movie musical “Wicked.”

Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel that inspired Broadway’s acclaimed musical of the same name, “Wicked” precedes Dorothy’s arrival in Oz and tells the legend of the world and the story behind Elphaba, (Erivo) the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda (Ariana Grande), who becomes the good witch.

Chu shares insight into the performance that blew him away, and why Erivo receiving the Gold Ally award has special meaning for him.

‘I Was There at the Fall of Arcadia’ and Other Throwaway Lines that Transformed Doctor Who
Image
Doctor Who has a habit of taking a throwaway line and making it into a big deal.

In 60th anniversary special “Wild Blue Yonder”, Russell T. Davies wrote what seemed like a passing joke about Isaac Newton mishearing the word ″gravity″ as “mavity” before committing to the bit and changing the word in the timeline from that point onwards, making the gag not so inconsequential after all.

Mavity isn’t alone in the show’s history. Throwaway lines have been seized upon and expanded over the years, some by the show’s fandom, but also by its writers. What started as world-building, texture or a dramatic beat has become the foundation for a whole new level of storytelling.

Lines like these…

“The heart of the machine is under the column”

The Edge of Destruction (1964), written by David Whitaker

In this First Doctor story, set almost entirely inside the Tardis, a...

Jon M. Chu Says ‘Wicked’ Film Will Feature Live Vocals From Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo
Image
When audiences see Wicked on the big screen, director Jon M. Chu promises to expect live vocals.

In a preview with Vanity Fair, the director shared that both Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo insisted on singing live during the production. Grande stars as Glinda, opposite Erivo’s Elphaba in the film.

“These are live vocals,” Chu said. “When we were shooting it, those girls were like, ‘Fuck the pre-records. We’re going live.’ ”

Despite feeling skeptical and questioning the decision (“There’s going to be a lot of wind in your air pipes. Is that okay?” he recalled asking), Chu said the stars “didn’t miss a beat” and said, “Yeah. That’s what we do.”

While performing “Defying Gravity,” Erivo “had a harness pulling and pushing and yanking and tugging on every nook and cranny that there is,” Grande described. Meanwhile, Erivo said of Grande: “I’m literally never...
