'Candyman' Star Pens Loving Tribute to Late Tony Todd on His 70th Birthday
Image
On Nov. 4, the world of cinema lost one of the greats when Tony Todd passed away. While he was primarily known for his roles in the horror genre, Todd’s career stretched far and wide to reach the theater, audio dramas, and video games. Along the way, he was known by his peers as one of the kindest men you’d ever meet, something that was reaffirmed by his Candyman co-star Virginia Madsen, who penned a touching tribute to her late friend on what would have been his 70th birthday.

Madsen took to Variety on Dec. 4 to share what Todd meant to her, recalling how she first met the 6' 5" star before cameras began rolling on their 1992 seminal horror classic that was based on the Clive Barker story, The Forbidden. "I first met Tony at a lunch," she recalled, before noting that she was only cast opposite Todd after the director’s wife got sick.

Virginia Madsen rememebers Tony Todd: “I will always be proud to have been his Helen”
Image
We were all shocked to learn of Tony Todd’s death last month, and Virginia Madsen has penned a lovely tribute to her late friend and Candyman co-star.

“I believe Tony is one of the iconic greats, up there with Dracula — and when you think about the power they have, it’s not strength. It’s seductive and romantic and draws you in,” Madsen wrote. “On top of that, he had the most beautiful voice. He could just say ‘Hi,’ and it would resonate through your whole body. I remember when ‘Candyman’ came out some people asked me what they did to his voice to make it so smooth and powerful. I was like, ‘No, it’s just like that!’“

Madsen continued, “I first met Tony at a lunch. I was originally going to play Helen’s best friend, Bernadette. Bernard’s wife at the time, Alexandra Pigg, was going to play Helen.

Tony Todd Remembered by ‘Candyman’ Co-Star Virginia Madsen: ‘I Will Always Be Proud to Have Been His Helen’
Image
Today marks the 70th birthday of actor Tony Todd, who died on Nov. 8. A genre staple whose hundreds of credits included “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Platoon” and the “Final Destination” series, Todd was best known for his performance in writer-director Bernard Rose’s 1992 horror film “Candyman,” which he led as the eponymous hook-wielding ghost. Here, Todd is remembered by his co-star, Virginia Madsen, who recounts meeting the actor for the first time, their yearslong friendship and how they made the decision to return for director Nia DaCosta’s franchise revival in 2021.

My husband Nick worked with Tony on a movie in 2008 and I recently asked him what he remembered about Tony. He said Tony was so kind and generous, which is something you always hear about him. And one day he went up to Nick and said, “This is your first movie, isn’t it?” And Nick said, “Yes,...

Virginia Madsen Almost Played A Completely Different Role In Candyman
Image
In Clive Barker's original short story "The Forbidden," published in Volume Five of his "Books of Blood" (called "In the Flesh" in the United States), the character of Helen is studying graffiti patterns in Liverpool as part of her college thesis research into urban legends. A lot of language in the original short story is devoted to the horrors of big city blight, and Helen aims to write a paper on "the semiotics of urban despair." As she delves further into Liverpool, she encounters repeated painted representations of the Candyman, a yellow-skinned ghoul with sharpened teeth and a hook hand, who is said to have committed many horrendous acts of violence in the neighborhood. In true Barker fashion, the protagonist's obsessions get the better of her, and she continues to probe until she encounters the actual Candyman.

Bernard Rose's 1992 film adaptation, "Candyman," transposes the action from Liverpool to Chicago's Cabrini-Green housing projects,...

The top 20 underappreciated films of 1985
1985 was the year of Back To The Future, Rocky IV and Rambo II. But what about these 20 movies, that also deserve a fair share of love?

Thirty years ago, Marty McFly was riding high with the smash hit Back To The Future, while Sylvester Stallone enjoyed his most successful year yet with the one-two punch of Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rocky IV. It was an era of family sci-fi and teen comedies and bullet-spraying action, where The Breakfast Club and Teen Wolf rubbed shoulders with Death Wish 3 and Commando. Then there were low-key dramas like Out Of Africa and The Color Purple, which were both awards magnets at the Oscars.

Away from all those big hits, 1985 saw the release of a wealth of less successful movies, some of which found a second life on the then-huge home video circuit. Here's our pick of 20 underappreciated films from the year of Rambo,...
