Beta Film Brings ‘Perfect Life’ Director Leticia Dolera’s ‘Pubertat,’ a Max Original, to the London TV Screenings (Exclusive)
Image
Beta Film, the leading European independent film-tv company, has picked up international sales rights to Leticia Dolera’s family drama “Pubertat – Secrets, Lies and Human Castles,” the Spanish writer-director-actor’s follow-up to “Perfect Life,” her Canneseries wining take on adult relationships and challenged coming of age,

Structured as a six one-hour-episode series, “Pubertat” completes Beta’s line-up at the upcoming London TV Screenings, which runs Feb. 23-28.

In “Pubertat,” a Max Original series, Dolera takes a look at lost love between parents and their teenage children and how it might be rediscovered, after an alleged sexual assault that sheds light on the adults’ sexual taboos.

The series is set in a Catalan town with a long-standing tradition of building human towers, the “castells.” Declared Intangible Heritage of Humanity by Unesco, “castells” are not only a spectacle of local festivities but a symbol of the importance of each of its members,...

US Trailer for Kooky Comedy 'Waiting for Dalí' on the Spanish Coast
Image
"This is the passport to Dalí coming here." Music Box Films has revealed an official US trailer for a Spanish comedy called Waiting for Dalí, arriving to watch in US theaters this July. It first premiered and opened in Spain last summer. Yet another Dali-related comedy film to watch, with plenty others recently including Daaaaaali! and Dalíland (with Sir Ben Kingsley). This one involves mixing Dali with food, following a chef who starts working in a kitchen at a place called El Surreal, a whimsical restaurant run by Jules, a man with a consuming obsession for local resident Salvador Dalí. Fernando, a talented chef, arrives to the village of Cadaqués (Google Maps) during the 70s, residence of the internationally renowned Dalí. The paths of the chef and the artist will cross and cause the birth of a new culinary genius. Waiting for Dalí "is a fanciful tale of love, art,...

Libertad Review – Cannes 2021
Image
Admittedly, when it becomes clear Libertad is about an upper-middle class family holidaying on the Costa Brava, rather than the titular Colombian girl working in their summer home, I feared it would be a bourgeois fantasy about servants’ hearts of gold. Thankfully it isn’t. A study of two teens’ fleeting friendship during one summer on the Spanish coast, Libertad is much more interesting – and self-aware – than that.

Spanish filmmaker Clara Roquet focuses mostly on the trials and tribulations of Nora (Maria Morera), a wealthy teen whose mum Teresa (Nora Navas) drags her on another endless summer trip to all the usual haunts. Nora is told to avoid the town, avoid going out at night, avoid Libertad (Nicolle García), the elusive daughter of housekeeper Rosana (Carol Hurtado). All Nora can do is stare at Manuel (Carlos Alcaide), the handsome first mate who works on the family boat.

That all changes...

2020 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Clara Roquet, Chad Hartigan, Lee Isaac Chung, Ana Lily Amirpour
Libertad

A burgeoning screenwriter on such films as 10,000 Km (2014) and Jaime Rosales’ excellent Petra (2018), Clara Roquet workshopped this project at the 2019 January Screenwriters Lab. Filming took place this summer in Barcelona with players Nora Navas, Maria Rodríguez Soto and Vicky Peña onboard. Set on Catalonia’s gorgeous Costa Brava, the feature turns on the Vidal family which is spending a summer with their Alzheimer-affected grandmother Ángela. Overprotected and shy, 14 year-old Nora goes through a difficult time after her parents’ separation, but what looked like another tedious, sad summer for Nora, turns into a dangerous coming of age experience with the arrival of Libertad, the wild 15-year daughter of Ángela’s Colombian caretaker.…...

Film Acquisition Rundown: Oscilloscope Picks Up ‘Lost In Paris,’ Gkids Grabs ‘My Life As a Zucchini’ And More
Jackie Chan, Wing-Lun Ng, Kai Wang, Ping Sang, Talu Wang, and Zitao Huang in Railroad Tigers (2016)
Keep up with the wild and wooly world of indie film acquisitions with our weekly Rundown of everything that’s been picked up around the globe. Check out last week’s Rundown here.

– Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired U.S. rights to acclaimed filmmakers Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon’s charming and romantic fourth feature film, “Lost in Paris.” The film will have its premiere this fall and have a theatrical release in 2017.

Filmed in their signature whimsical style, the feature “stars the filmmakers as a small-town Canadian librarian and a strangely seductive, oddly egotistical vagabond. When Fiona’s (Gordon) orderly life is disrupted by a letter of distress from her 93-year-old Aunt Martha (delightfully portrayed by Academy Award nominee Emmanuelle Riva) who is living in Paris, Fiona hops on the first plane she can and arrives only to discover that Martha has disappeared. In an avalanche of spectacular disasters, she encounters Dom (Abel), the affable,...
