Damn the Defiant!
Image
Haven’t yet seen all the best old-school vintage naval combat epics? This color & ‘scope thriller has a terrific cast of Brit stars and up-n-comers, can boast excellent visuals and is historically accurate. Alec Guinness captains a ship during the Napoleonic Wars, and finds his duty complicated by a psychopathic top officer (Dirk Bogarde) who usurps authority and sees the crew as fresh meat for his sadistic ideas about discipline. All the tech and art credits are top-tier, plus we get nice supporting perfs from the likes of Anthony Quayle, Nigel Stock, Maurice Denham, Victor Maddern, Tom Bell, and Murray Melvin.

Alan Shallcross obituary
Producer of popular BBC television dramas

Alan Shallcross, who has died aged 78, epitomised the BBC television producer of the 1970s and 80s. Always dapper, never without a tie and eminently respectable, Alan had a passion for drama and a respect for writers, actors and the creative process. He knew what he wanted and he got it by searching out talented individuals, nurturing them and then watching them weave their magic in his productions.

In those days, when Paul Fox was controller of BBC1 and Christopher Morahan was head of plays, the BBC drama department bubbled with life. Producers such as Alan were given commissioning power. The writer Brian Phelan, who worked with him often, has described how they went out to lunch, chewed over an idea and, if all was well, went ahead and did it: no committees, no commissioning department, just one producer with an eye for a good...

Lucas tracks down Morahan's 'Spy'
Josh Lucas
LONDON -- Josh Lucas is set to star in Andy Morahan's God's Spy, a U.K.-Canadian thriller based on the true events that culminated in the discovery of Italian banker Roberto Calvi hanging under London's Blackfriars Bridge in 1982, the producers said Friday.

The $15 million-budgeted picture, which will shoot in 2008 in Montreal, also features Jordi Molla, Giancarlo Giannini and Peter O'Toole.

Written by Brian Phelan, it's produced by Lovett Bickford of Cardinal Pictures and exec produced by Kim Leggatt of Local Films. CAA is handling U.S. rights.

The movie centers on a young Wall Street trader (Lucas) who is really a Jesuit priest working undercover to gain experience of the financial markets. He becomes embroiled in a political and financial conspiracy involving the Vatican Bank, the CIA, the Mafia and Masonic Lodge P2.
