To be a proper spy, you tend to need the backing of some sort of organization, governmental or otherwise. Without that, you're just sort of a guy skulking around, and that's not very James Bond, is it? In "Burn Notice," Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) finds out firsthand what it's like to be a spy left out in the cold, when he is "burned" (or discredited) and abandoned by his former employer. Left with an impressive but fairly limited set of skills, he has no choice but to go freelance, taking on assignments within the criminal underworld of Miami.

"Burn Notice" initially ran on the USA Network, and it was popular enough to earn itself a respectable seven seasons from 2007 to 2013, as well four Emmy nominations over the years. Slow Horses is a spy thriller dark comedy-drama series written by Will Smith, Morwenna Banks, Mark Denton, and Jonny Stockwood. Based on the Slough House novel series by author Mick Herron, the Apple TV+ series follows the story of River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) as he ends up in Slough House after a botched training mission. Slough House is a part of Mi-5, but everybody there are the rejects, who aren’t capable of being real agents, they are known as Slow Horses to the rest of the agents and the head of the Slough House is Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), a mean old man who once was a brilliant field agent. The series follows Cartwright’s relentless drive to get out of the Slough House. Tracker is an action drama series created by Ben H. Winters. Based on a 2019 book titled The Never Game by author Jeffrey Deaver, the CBS series follows the story of an extremely skilled survivalist who goes from town to town to find missing people and things to collect rewards for them. Tracker stars Justin Hartley in the lead role with Robin Weigert, Abby McEnany, Eric Graise, and Fiona Rene starring in supporting roles. We often joke about Burn Notice being stuck in its formula but we’ve noted that Season 6 has been superbly different with a more serious tone and a focused Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) risking his own life and limbs to get Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar) out of jail. TV spots warned us that episode 606, “Shock Wave” would bring death to the show and the inclination is to suspect Agent Pearce (Lauren Stamile) or Agent Card (John C. McGinley) would take the fall because most viewers don’t expect to have a significant death this early in the season. But we didn’t get one big death, we got two.

Agents Pearce and Card would certainly give Michael a duty of loyalty to fulfill, to see to it that their killer would be found if their time was indeed up–we saw how Michael reacted to Max’s death, even though he was framed for it.

Burn Notice creator Matt Nix has explained the decision to kill off Nate (Seth Peterson) in this week's episode. The showrunner revealed that Nate's murder was intended to teach lead character Michael (Jeffrey Donovan) that his actions "come at a cost". "A big emphasis this year is on the idea that Michael's quest to deal with all of it - whether it's being burned or going after Anson (Jere Burns) - that all of these things come with a cost," Nix told TV Guide. Getting "burned" is nothing compared to the pain Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) & Co. suffered on tonight's (July 26) explosive episode of "Burn Notice."

Major spoilers ahead, so if you haven't seen "Shock Wave" (what's wrong with you?), run away like your hair is on fire.

Rip, Nate Westen (Seth Peterson). Did anyone see that coming? When we accused showrunner Matt Nix of cruelty, he deftly deflected the charges. "When I think about my favorite episodes of shows I love, they tend to be shows that change the game. For me, out of cruelty to characters comes new life."

There is no question that Nate's murder invigorates "Burn Notice," whose central storyline was running out of steam. Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) has been the good soldier, helping those in need while trying to find out who burned him as a spy. After getting so close to the truth so many times, Michael began risking those he cared about to get any morsel or favor to help him get to the end. Once he got there, he wasn’t prepared for the most surreptitious villain he’s faced so far. Anson Fullerton (Jere Burns) has been up there all along, pulling the strings and orchestrating the madness in Michael’s life and then used Michael and his crew in Season 5 with Fiona’s (Gabrielle Anwar) life as leverage because he could frame her for the killing of two security guards at the British Consulate. The first two episodes have shown that Burn Notice is noticeably different this season–noticeably awesome that is!

Ep. 602 “Mixed Messages”

There’s something very different this season, something very rough around the edges and I like it! In seasons past, Burn Notice would make a large splash in its season premiere that furthered Michael’s progress up the burn list, and then retreat back to safety like Sam Axe reclining in a South Beach cabana with a mojito in hand. After an explosive Season Premiere, creator and showrunner Matt Nix and star/producer (and director of this episode), Jeffrey Donovan kept pedal floored.

Viewers had to know that Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar) would not be safe going to prison and her “Dear Michael” letter set the tone for the episode.

Chris Caldovino (The Sopranos) has joined the cast of another HBO mob drama, Prohibition-era series Boardwalk Empire, as a recurring. Cassandra Freeman (Numbers) has been added to VH1′s hourlong series Single Ladies, executive produced by Queen Latifah. The actress, repped by Innovative and Framework, will play Morgan Hayes. Sedona: the Movie, the second feature film from filmmaker Tommy Stovall, reminded me of a very fun cross-blending between the Kafka-esque comedy of After Hours, and the road movie plot staple of a stranger breaking down in a very odd town. The film intercuts two stories. First, we meet Tammy (played by Frances Fisher), who does, in fact, break down in Sedona, Arizona (when a plane lands on the road behind her) en route to a huge business meeting in Phoenix. She’s forced to spend the better part of the day with some very eccentric Sedona characters, portrayed by actors Beth Grant, Barry Corbin, Christopher Atkins, Kylee Cochran, and Lin Shaye (who you’ll remember as the Cameron Diaz’s very tanned next-door neighbor in There’s Something About Mary), amongst others.

Tammy’s story is paralleled by the more serious tale of Scott (Seth Peterson...

“Mind Games” was a straight-forward formulaic episode of Burn Notice. Michael (Jeffrey Donovan) goes undercover–in this case as a forger inspired by his brother Nate (Seth Peterson)– to infiltrate a business deal with some loan sharks. They take the shark’s pit bull, Carter (Wade Hunt Williams) and make it seem like he’s an undercover federal agent, turning the Carter and Wallace against each other. Um, except that Carter really was an undercover FBI agent. Whoops. Wade Hunt Williams was very convincing playing Carter and someone who was genuinely annoyed by Westen’s Trey cover. What a surprise that Michael put his life in danger with one of his citizen spy jobs. This was a stunt gone awry and forced Michael to think on the fly which brought out my “Okay, Westen. Lemme see you get out of this,” goggles. What a fun twist on this classic formula that usually gives good results.

Burn Notice creator Matt Nix has revealed that Nate will return in the next episode of the show. Nix explained that Nate (Seth Peterson), who is the brother of Michael (Jeffrey Donovan), will have started to settle down. "He has a kid now," Nix told TV Line. Nate's (Seth Peterson) back in town! Michael's injuries have pushed him on the sideline and pushed his mom into action. She's called in Michael's brother Nate to keep him company and out of trouble. Needless to say, Nate's return has some ulterior motive. Michael had enough trouble keeping himself out of the spy game when he was burned, it's doubtful a little gunshot wound will keep this Westen out of the game for too long. But, brotherly problems may just be more than he's up to dealing with. The title of the series refers to the 'burn notices' issued by intelligence agencies to discredit or announce the dismissal of agents/sources who are considered to have become 'unreliable'.

When a spy is burned, they are wiped off the grid, without access to cash or influence. According to the narration during the opening credits, the burned spy has no prior work history, no money; in essence, no identity.

The series is a first-person narrative (including frequent voice-overs) from the viewpoint of covert-operations agent 'Michael Westen' (Donovan).

Bruce Campbell answered the question so many were wondering. Why is there a Burn Notice panel taking place at Comic-Con?

"Why is a spy show being paraded in front of all the freaks and geeks?" he asked. "Why? Science fiction, fantasy and horror. Horror: My character's name is Sam Axe. Science fiction: If you've ever been to Miami you'll know there's lots of aliens there. Fantasy: My character Sam Axe sleeps with a string of rich Miami women and that's a fantasy to me."

Regardless, it was clear that the audience assembled were appreciative of the chance to celebrate the show, and it quickly became clear that this was to be the Bruce Campbell show.

After, of course, the applause for Michael Shanks, the surprise moderator of the panel, died down a bit.

Even with MacGyver’s current 5 ½ season lead on Michael Westen, the lead of Burn Notice, is quickly rising to eclipse his cunningly creative predecessor. MacGyver was the master of minutiae and seemed to know the result of every possible chemical combination which, admittedly, is badass. But Michael Westen has a more complete combination of brains and brawn. MacGyver was more prone to running with creative escape routes while with Westen you can bet that when things get hairy he’ll throw his fair share of punches. The two may not occupy the exact same niche, but there’s enough overlap for the comparison. And “classic” television be damned, Burn Notice wins.
