Melanie Peterson was born and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to Rebecca and Lynn Peterson two radiologists who met and fell in love at U of S medical school. Melanie first came to our television screens in the TV movie Scandalous Me: The Jacqueline Susann Story (1998) playing the small, but important role of Patty Duke. Her first major television role came in the form of Gretchen, a stalker obsessed with Erik Estrada, in season two episode ten of Jeff Ltd. (2007), a Canadian television comedy series that aired on CTV and The Comedy Network.

Between acting jobs, she often picked up the Gibson guitar her father had given her as a curious parting gift upon leaving home and moving to Toronto. She soon began the second leg of her artistic journey: songwriting, recording and performing her songs live. She launched her first full-length album 'Unbreakable' in April 2013 at The Piston in Toronto. With support from FACTOR Canada, Melanie Peterson teamed up with producer and band member Mitch Girio (Kirsten Jones, Emma Lee, Susan Cadogan) to record her second full-length album 'Anywhere From Here' released on March 16, 2016. In 2019 Melanie released a holiday single - produced by legendary, multiple Juno Award and Polaris Prize-winning Canadian producer and musician Michael Wojewoda - "Christmas Breaks My Heart," which became available on all digital platforms November 29, 2019 and celebrated with a single release party at The Free Times Cafe in Toronto. This song was a finalist in the Great American Songwriting Competition.

She joined the cast of the acclaimed series The Boys for The Female of the Species (Jul 26, 2019) Season 1, Episode 4 - Sweet Mom. She shared the screen with Jennifer Tilly in the TV series Chucky for Jennifer's Body (Oct 18, 2023) Season 3, Episode 3 - Jury Foreman

She is an animal lover and who describes herself having a silly, often groan worthy, sense of humour.
