Disney movies are some of the most beloved and popular. Most Disney films are known for their classic happy ending and sweet love stories that leave audiences feeling happy by the end. But there are many other Disney films so sad that those who've seen them warn that people should be mentally prepared before watching them. While most Disney movies deal with coming-of-age stories and idyllic romances with humor and lighthearted scenes, other Disney films include extremely sad moments, or heartbreaking endings.
Many Disney fans know that almost every Disney movie has a sad moment, from a parent's death to a betrayal or a love story that can't be. But a few Disney films take the sadness to a whole new level, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Some of the saddest Disney movies end up also becoming some of the most memorable for fans. Animated films are some of the first pieces of fictional storytelling that young audiences are exposed to, having a deep impact on new generations' understanding of how narratives can impact them. The best animated movies, the ones that resonate with children and adults alike, are the ones that are able to entertain audiences young and old with stories that hide deeper meaning under the surface.
A few animated films were able to appear on Roger Ebert's coveted Great Movies list, a collection of a few hundred films that he felt stood the test of time and would remain important pieces of movie history. These animated films are the ones that best capture the human experience and deep emotional truths through one of the oldest mediums in the history of film.

It seems that some of the older titles in Pixar Animation Studio's impressive library are finding a resurgence in popularity on streaming. Three of the studio's films have hit the top 10 movies chart on Hulu, with Finding Nemo (#2), Ratatouille (#3), and The Incredibles (#4) all having found strong viewership on the streaming service this week. Combining the libraries of Disney+ and Hulu has made an array of titles available to people who previously had just one or the other service, leading to many old classics now suddenly finding relevance again. In Pixar's case, it is a testament to the timelessness of their animated masterpieces.
Finding Nemo was released in 2003 and was the fifth Pixar film ever made. Its number two spot on Hulu more than two decades after its release further cements it as an animated classic; the Oscar-winning animated film also holds the very special record of being the highest-selling DVD of all time.

“Win or Lose,” Pixar’s first original, long-form series for Disney+, was previewed at 2022’s D23 and again last summer at the Annecy International Animation Festival in France. And then … crickets.
Well, at Friday night’s D23 presentation, we got the release date — December 6 — for “Win or Lose,” and they showed a new trailer, which you can watch below.

The series, created by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates — story artists who worked on “Toy Story 4” — centers around a middle school softball game. (Go Pickles!) Each episode is told from a different perspective – it could be one of the kids, it could be the umpire, it could be one of the kids’ parents like it was in the episode that was screened at Annecy last year.

“Inside Out 2” roared into cinema in June, becoming Pixar’s highest-grossing film in a debut weekend of all time, while its current worldwide haul at this time of writing stands at just over one billion.
The first movie — one of the most ingenious films of this century — took audiences inside the head of young Riley as she navigated a move to a new city while her emotions tried to guide her through the move in her head. This second film brings back those emotions as Riley goes through her teenage years. But Joy and Sadness and the gang have to deal with several new emotions in headquarters, including Anxiety, Embarrassment, and Ennui.
But while the film marches towards $1 billion at the box office, could it also be marching towards awards glory? Well, animated flicks don’t get the justice they deserve when it comes to the Academy Awards. So often,...

Monsters, Inc. 2 can finally address Sulley and Boo's reunion following the first film's cliffhanger ending. Disney previously scrapped a devastating sequel idea where Boo would have died. Pixar must make sure Monsters, Inc. 2 lives up to the original film's high standard.
A Monsters, Inc. sequel has been a long time coming, and although Pixar hasn't officially confirmed another movie, one has been teased, hopefully finally paying off the original film's ending. The 2001 animated comedy, directed by Pete Docter, was only the fourth Pixar movie ever made, following in the footsteps of Toy Story, A Bug's Life, and Toy Story 2. Although Monsters, Inc. is one of Pixar's oldest films, it's still among the animation company's best. It deserves a sequel, which must live up to the hype that's been building since Monsters, Inc. ended on a cliffhanger 23 years ago.

Hayao Miyazaki enjoyed Pixar's film Up for its heartbreaking opening sequence and attention to detail in animation. The Pixar film received critical acclaim, won numerous awards, and grossed approximately 735 million dollars at the box office. Miyazaki's nod to Pixar's Luxo Jr. mascot in Spirited Away shows his respect for the Western animation studio's success.
A well-known fact about Hayao Miyazaki is that he holds a general distaste for a great deal of modern animation. While many of his own films have implemented CGI, he's especially disinterested in any productions that use it entirely in place of traditional animation. Over the years, this, combined with Miyazaki only rarely watching new films in general, has led to him having few kind words to say about one of the most famous animation studios in the world: Pixar. However, there is a single Pixar film that Miyazaki has expressed a fondness for.

Pixar considered a redemption arc for the villain, Charles Muntz, in Up, but ultimately decided against it due to the potential for a long, dialogue-heavy scene. The creators also considered trapping Muntz in Carl's house as it floats away, but realized it would undermine the story of Carl's relationship with his late wife Ellie. The chosen ending, where Muntz falls to his death after his foot gets tangled in balloon strings, provides closure for Carl and allows the story to end on a positive note.
Pixar's 2009 animated movie Up proved to be a cinematic masterpiece, but the struggle to bring an end to its lead villain caused problems behind the scenes. Directed by Pete Docter, the movie tells the story of an elderly man, Carl Fredricksen, who ties thousands of balloons to his house to fulfill a lifelong dream to travel to South America; a young wilderness explorer named Russell...

The main antagonist in Disney/Pixar's Up is based on a real-life person who stole from Walt Disney, adding a layer of intrigue and real-world inspiration to the film. Up remains a beloved Disney/Pixar film due to the heartfelt passion and thought put into its creation by writer and director Pete Doctor, known for other animated classics like Monsters, Inc., Inside Out, and Soul. A sequel to Up, titled Carl's Date, has been brought to life as a short film in 2023, featuring the return of Edward Asner as the protagonist Carl Fredricksen, with a runtime of just 8 minutes.

There’s a scene in the 2010 film Eat Pray Love where Julia Roberts’s character Liz basks in the experience of eating a guilt-free pizza. It was an important character moment for her–and for many audience members. And whatever your specific dietary preferences or requirements may be, we hope that you’ll enjoy whatever your guilt-free “pizza moment” is this Thanksgiving, surrounded by friends and family (chosen or otherwise.)

Animated flicks don’t get the justice they deserve when it comes to the Academy Awards. So often, animated movies are some of the most original, memorable, and well-told stories of the entire year yet they are, more often than not, confined to the category of Best Animated Picture.
“Snow White and the Seven Dwarves,” “Fantasia,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “The Lion King,” “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo,” “Wall-e,” “Shrek,” and last year’s Best Animated Picture winner, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” are just a handful of all-time classic movies that aren’t great animated movies, they are great movies period. Despite this, however, we have only had three animated movies in Oscars history that have been nominated for Best Picture.

The last few years of Pixar have been rather dispiriting. I don't mean this in terms of quality. Far from it. "Soul," "Turning Red," and "Luca" have ranged from good to great, continuing to show a studio brimming with imagination as newer voices come into the mix. When I say they have been dispiriting, I mean it from a business sense, as under the Bob Chapek regime of Disney the company was relegated to a being a content farm for Disney+. Every year, a Pixar movie was an event, and because nothing can become an event on a streaming service, Pixar's specialness has wasted away. Their first film back in theaters was "Lightyear" and it was a financial disaster. They have "Elemental" releasing this June, and the early box office tracking for it isn't promising.

Among the layoffs that took place at the Walt Disney Company were job cuts at Pixar that included the director and producer of Lightyear, Deadline has confirmed.
Director Angus MacLane, a 26-year animator who was part of the Senior Creative Team in animated films like Coco, Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4, was cut from the studio in late May, which was part of the 7,000 layoffs Disney had planned. Galyn Susman, who had been at the studio since the original Toy Story was released in 1995, was also part of the cuts.
There was a total of 75 jobs that were made redundant on May 23, Reuters first reported. It’s worth noting that cuts at the animation studio are rare and the last time it happened was in 2013 when The Good Dinosaur was delayed. At the time, 5% of Pixar’s 1,200 workforce was cut, including director Bob Peterson.

Carl's house from Pixar's Up is recreated with over 68,000 Lego bricks before taking flight with balloons. Up debuted in 2009, telling the story of Carl Fredricksen, a 78-year-old man who uses balloons to float his house out of the city with his sights set on Paradise Falls, only to inadvertently take off with a young Wilderness Explorer aboard. The film was co-directed by Pete Docter and Bob Peterson, with voice talent that includes Ed Asner, Christopher Plummer, and John Ratzenberger. Up was a hit with critics and audiences, earning over $735 million worldwide and ranking one of the top-rated Pixar movies.

The Walt Disney Company has been synonymous with animation ever since Mickey Mouse's debut in 1928's "Steamboat Willie." Almost 100 years later and Disney is not so much a little mouse but an enormous whale lunging through the media landscape and devouring properties such as Marvel, Pixar, and 20th Century Studios.Disney's holdings are so vast that its catalog ranges from "Bambi" and "A Bug's Life" to "Predator," "Die Hard," "Family Guy," and "The Simpsons," but that doesn't mean the company hasn't tripped up. On the contrary -- many Disney films have been financial blunders, even beloved works such as "Pinocchio," the initial failure of which caused Walt Disney to be, according to his friend and colleague Joe Grant, "very, very depressed."
The fortunes of "Pinocchio" have changed since its release in 1940 -- numerous rereleases pulled its lifetime grosses to over $120 million -- but that can't be said of other Disney productions.

Earlier this week, Pixar dropped a new trailer for "Elemental," which will mark the animation studio's return to the big screen with an original movie since "Onward" hit theaters just before the coronavirus pandemic ruined everything. Since 2020, Pixar's movies "Soul," "Luca," and "Turning Red" have all been relegated to Disney+, though the latter was intended for theaters, it ended up being pushed to streaming because of a coronavirus variant outbreak. Frankly, we're ready for Pixar to bring their brand of storytelling magic to the big screen with a movie like "Elemental," especially after "Lightyear" turned out to be a bit of a disappointment.

This summer, Pixar's new film "Elemental" (watch the new trailer here) will be the animation studio's first original film to get a wide theatrical release since "Onward" hit the big screen just before the coronavirus pandemic swept the globe. "Lightyear" was given a theatrical release last year, but it wasn't exactly a sensation, so we're overdue for some real Pixar magic.
Thankfully, after Disney and Pixar invited /Film and other members of the media to screen roughly 30 minutes of footage from "Elemental" during an early press event, I can tell you that this is a return to form for the animation studio. With the exception of "Wall-e," this feels like Pixar's first proper romantic comedy, giving us a charming meet-cute between a fire woman named Ember Lumen (Leah Lewis of "The Half of It") and a water man named Wade Ripple (Mamoudou Athie of "Jurassic World Dominion"). Their relationship...

Pixar Animation Studios has revealed today it will be releasing a new short film based on Up together with Elemental. The short will bring Carl (voiced by Ed Asner) and Dug (voiced by Bob Peterson) back to face a new challenge, the man’s first date since his wife’s passing. This short also marks the return to Pixar presenting shorts ahead of their theatrical releases since Incredibles 2.

While visiting Pixar Studios in Emeryville, California, for a behind-the-scenes look at Elemental, the studio’s upcoming animated epic, we learned that the Pixar short Carl’s Date would play ahead of the new film. Carl’s Date hails from the creators of Dug Days, the television series of shorts produced by Pixar Animation Studios for the Disney+ streaming service. Bob Peterson directs Carl’s Date, a standalone short featuring the cantankerous balloon enthusiast and his energetic golden retriever, Dug, from 2009’s Up.
Carl’s Date centers on Carl and Dug living together and Dug advising the older man when Carl gets invited on his first date. The late Ed Asner voices Carl as one of his final performances. Asner died of natural causes a few months after completing Pixar’s Carl’s Date project. The short places a bow on Carl’s storyline and leaves him in a good...

For many years, it was customary that every new theatrical release from Pixar would include a short film as an opener for the film, usually sharing a similar tone or thematic idea with the feature film. The last one was 2018's "Bao," which eventually won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film and led to director Domee Shi helming her first feature, the breakout hit "Turning Red." Sadly, the tradition came to an end with the release of "Toy Story 4" in 2019, and if we're being honest, we've been missing it. Sure, Disney+ has been a fantastic outlet for fantastic short films out of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation studios, but there was always something magical about seeing a Pixar short before a feature — a cinematic appetizer to help the real world drift away and allow audiences to fully immerse themselves into a new, animated world.
