Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival, widely acclaimed as one of the largest and most influential genre film festivals in the world, has just announced the Off-Frontières selections of the fourth edition of its Frontières International Co-Production Market.

Following the selection of the official Frontières line-up of film projects for the Frontières International Co-Production Market, another 12 projects have been chosen for the return of the Off-Frontières selection, for the market’s 4th edition.

The Off-Frontières projects line-up features a predominance of Canadian projects, complemented by projects from American, Mexican, Irish, British, French, German and Australian directors and producers. FRONTIÈRES International Co-Production Market has announced it’s official selection for it’s return to this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival. Frontieres is the first and only co-production market to connect North America and Europe in an environment focused specifically on genre film production. The initiative began in 2012 with 14 projects selected including works by Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (Resolution), Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) and Bruce McDonald (Pontypool). This fourth edition will bring together 12 projects hailing from Canada, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Portugal, the UK and the United-States.

Frontieres will take place from July 24th to 27th. This group of filmmakers in particular presents a high volume of fresh filmmakers, many of whom will be presenting their debut feature length films. This is rounded off by a handful of internationally known filmmakers.

Montreal, Thursday May 15, 2014 – Just over a month after its first European edition in Brussels, the Frontières International Co-Production Market has selected the official line-up of Frontières projects for its 4th edition.

For its return to Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival, from July 24 to 27, 12 Frontières projects have been selected, hailing from Canada, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Portugal, the UK and the United-States.

This project selection boasts a higher-than-usual concentration of fresh talents, many of them presenting first feature film projects after many award-winning shorts, or second features following debuts that traveled extensively on the festival circuit.

Frontières International Co-Production Market has unveiled the official lineup of its fourth edition.

Returning to Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival following its first European edition in Brussels, Frontières has selected 12 projects hailing from Canada, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Portugal, the UK and Us.

Among the projects are new works from established film-makers Gabriel Pelletier, George Mihalka and Simon Rumley, but the selection also includes a strong concentration of new talents presenting their first or second features.

Ahead of this edition, Lindsay Peters has been promoted to market managing director, while Stephanie Trepanier [pictured] will focus on market creative director duties.

As another fantastic edition, the sweet sixteen, of Fantasia wraps up, the Juries are in with the fests winners.  And the two big ones are Kim Jee-woon and Yim Pil Sung's science fiction anthology Doomsday Book, which one the Best Feature film and documentary/horror fusion Toad Road which won best Director, Jason Banker, and Best Actor, James Davidson.  Korea proved very popular, winning the inaugural Satoshi Kon award for best Animated film at the festival, with Yeon Sang-ho's King of Pigs getting the honour.  Horror descent into madness, Crave, won best first feature for Charles de Lauzirika.The rest of the award winners, and the Juries that picked them, can be found in Fantasia's full press release below.Feature Film JuryPresident: Gabriel Pelletier, with Jay Baruchel, Sylvain Krief and...

Fantasia 2012 has come to an end, which means it's time for the announcement of this year's jury winners. As usual, they're an eclectic bunch, and hopefully we'll get to see them and all the other great films that screened during the fest here in the States sooner rather than later.

As we roll into Berlin where War Witch (aka Rebelle) (Isa: Films Distribution) by Kim Nguyen is in Competition. While it’s Kim’s 4th feature, this is the first of his films to have a world premiere at an international festival. This is exceptional as well because the last time the Canadians had a Canadian director in Competition at the Berlinale was in 1999 with Emporte-Moi ! Guy Madden’s Keyhole holds a Berlinale Special slot. Guy is Canada’s cultural ambassador in Berlin and a regular at the Festival and sat on the Berlinale’s Official Jury last year – with Isabella Rossellini.

Sheldon Larry’s Leave It on the Floor (Isa: Arrow) is a U.S.-Canadian Co-pro which has played Laff, Tiff and is now in the Panorama.

Films in the Forum include Green Laser by another Berlinale favorite, John Greyson. Green Laser is his 8th film at the festival. His first was Urinal in 1989. Denis Côté’s Bestiary, straight from Sundance, and Francine, the first narrative feature by Melanie Shatzky (Canada) and Brian M. Cassidy (U.S.) the team that directed Patron Saints (Tiff 2011, Rotterdam 2012) are are all in the Forum.

In Berlinale Shorts Competition, The Man That Got Away by Trevor Anderson is his second film in this section (2009 The Island). His doc short The High Leve Bridge was in Sundance in 2010.

All we have to do now is wait to see which prizes go to them! Last year Canadian productions came away with three.

Go Films, a Canadian production company, announced that director Gabriel Pelletier's next film, La peur de l'eau, had received funding from Telefilm Canada, a federal financing corporation for the production of feature films.

The film is adapted from Jean Lemieux's novel On finit toujours par payer.

It takes place in the Magdalen Islands (Îles-de-la-Madeleine) in Quebec. The mayor's daughter had been brutally murdered and the inhabitants of the town are shocked and an investigation will be led.

Finally, the production on the film should begin in fall 2010 and the casting has yet to be confirmed.

Toronto – Canadian government coin for local indie production continues to flow.

Telefilm Canada, Ottawa's film financier, on Friday said it will hand out more than $25 million in funding to French-language movies over the current year through the Canada Feature Film Fund.

And the Ontario Media Development Corp., which hands out film tax credits to Canadian and Hollywood producers shooting locally, on Friday named Pinewood Toronto Studios chairman Paul Bronfman and four other industry players to its board of directors.

The latest round of financing from Telefilm Canada has seen $7 million going into six Quebec films, including "Bashir Lazhar," the latest feature from Writer-director Philippe Falardeau ("Congorama").

Based on the stage play by Evelyne de la Cheneliere, "Bashir Lazhar" portrays an Algerian refugee to Quebec who replaces a school-teacher who hanged herself, only to be faced at school by a group of traumatized pupils and Canadian immigration hurdles.

The Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (Sodec), Quebec's cultural sponsor for the film industry, announced the 12 lucky feature films that will be subsidized. Speaking of homegrown films, eight will be in French and one will be in English. The rest of the films are co-productions.

Homegrown films in French:

Bo$$É: Directed by Claude Desrosiers, this film is a satirical comedy about financial scandals seen through the eyes of a corrupt man, Bernard Bossé. The film will be scripted by André Ducharme, Luc Déry and Yves Lapierre. The film is produced by Les productions Équinoxe and will be distributed by Alliance Atlantis.

Décharge: A criminal who found redemption randomly meets a prostitute. However, the meeting, brings back in the criminal things from his past. Written by Benoît Pilon and Pierre Szalowski. Directed by Benoît Pilon (Ce qu'il faut pour vivre). Produced by Forum Films and distributed by Remstar Distribution.
