This Day That Year: Bol Bachchan Clocks 13 Years
Image
Subhash K Jha looks back at the Ajay Devgan, Abhishek Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan starrer, Bol Bachchan, which released 13 years ago in this new edition of This Day That Year.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee would be unable to recognize this version of his comedy Golmaal on which Bol Bachchan is based.

Hell, he might have even sued for subversion of his creative property. But then he always loved the Bachchan family. And there are the two Bachchans in the film: Abhishek Bachchan and his likeable comic partner Krushna Abhishek. No, make that 3. At the very start, the senior-most Bachchan, the Big B himself, makes a gracious song-and-dance appearance where the director Rohit Shetty lets us know he loves the Bachchans. In one way or another.

The film casts Abhishek Bachchan in a double role of Abbas and his doppelganger, Abhishek Bachchan. Yes, that’s the name given to Abhishek’s character when he...

Ratna Pathak Shah and Naseeruddin Shah are one of the most adored couples in the Hindi film fraternity. Love blossomed between the two because of their mutual love for acting, theatre and creativity. However, they also had their share of obstacles since Naseeruddin was not divorced officially from his first wife and there was also some resistance from Ratna’s parents towards their union.

According to Bollywood Shaadi, Ratna Pathak Shah met Naseeruddin Shah in during Satyadev Dubey’s play ‘Sambhog Se Sanyaas Tak.’ They were drawn towards each other for their dedication towards their craft and the passion for acting. The couple soon fell in love but could not tie the knot since Shah was not divorced legally from his first wife Manara Sikri.

That was not the only issue that the couple faced. Ratna Pathak...

Gol Maal (1979) Box Office: With A 600% Profit, Amol Palekar’s Og Blockbuster Registered 10.7 Times Higher Bo Returns Than Rohit Shetty’s Remake – Decoding Stats
Image
Bol Bachchan (2012) Was A Remake Of 1979 Film Gol Maal ( Photo Credit – IMDb )

It has been 45 years since Hrishikesh Mukerjee’s classic film Gol Maal was released in the theaters. The film received a cult status the moment people walked out of the theaters smiling. And it still leaves you with a smile whenever you watch the classic.

The film starred Amol Palekar and Utpal Dutt in the lead role, with Bindiya Goswami, Shubha Khote, and Dina Pathak in the supporting lead. It earned a blockbuster status at the box office.

Years later, Rohit Shetty was so inspired by the film that he took inspiration twice. Once for Golmaal: Fun Unlimited, which borrowed only the name of the Og classic, and for the second time, he attempted a remake that was titled Bol Bachchan!

“ Hum Do Hamare Do, Lost Opportunity, Missed Quarrels” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Hum Do Hamare Do(Disney-Hotstar)

Starring Ratna Pathak Shah, Paresh Rawail, Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon

Not even the wonderful Ratna Pathak Shah and Paresh Rawal could rescue this dreary rom-com from sinking so low into the abyss that it’s hard to find one single moment of joy from the mirthless mess.

On the premise level it sounds promising. Rajkummar Rao is Dhruv ,an orphan craving for a, awww, family. Ever-bubbly Kriti Sanon , the new-age Preity Zinta, craves for a Bunty with a large heart and a larger family. So what does Dhruv do? He hires two long-in-love estranged people Purushottam(Rawal) and Deepti(Pathak) to play his parents.

There is an unintentional tribute to Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Golmaal here. In that film Amol Palekar(who was to middle-of-the-road cinema in the 1970s what Rajkummar Rao is now to the romcom industry) had hired Ratna Pathak Shah’s mother...

Rupali Ganguly: I will be remembered as ‘Monisha’ and ‘Anupamaa’
Image
Rupali Ganguly’s flourishing TV career spanning over two decades is an inspiration to many. The actor feels blessed and proud of the way her journey has created a path. Looking back to the time she stepped into the world of television, the actor, who plays the titular role in Rajan Shahi and Deepa Shahi’s show Anupamaa, feels she has been “a chosen one” because of the plethora of the roles and the variations of characters that she got the opportunity to portray on screen.

Mithun uncle practically worked in all of my dad’s films. When I was 7, there was a film 'Saheb' where I just had to run into the house and touch...

Khubsoorat (1980)
'Khubsoorat' extremely contemporary, says Sonam
Khubsoorat (1980)
Mumbai, July 12: Actress Sonam Kapoor, who will be seen in the remake of "Khubsoorat", says it's a contemporary film and the story does not ape the 1980 hit movie.

The original "Khubsoorat" had Rekha in the lead role of a happy-go-lucky girl and she was joined by the likes of Ashok Kumar, Dina Pathak and Rakesh Roshan in the cast.

"Honestly, the script of 'Khubsoorat' is extremely contemporary. There's nothing about it that resembles the Hrishikesh Mukherjee film," said Sonam while talking about the film's setting.

"We had the rights to the film and we took the character, spirit of the character and have put her in.

The Celluloid Mother - Feature
When one talks of mothers on celluloid, one generally visualizes the image of a sacrificing mother who is either bent over a sewing machine stitching clothes in umpteen films or, working at a construction site bent under the weight of bricks on her head, such as Nirupa Roy in Deewar (1975). Over time, the mother image sometimes transformed itself to Dina Pathak in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Khubsoorat...
