Parsons is the younger daughter of Eben Parsons (1896-1969; born Massachusetts) and Elinor Ingeborg Mattson (or Mattsson; 1886-1972, born in Sweden) who wed on September 30, 1922 in Rowley, Massachusetts. Her elder sister, Mrs. Elaine Parsons Ruggles, was born on November 16, 1923 and died on December 20, 1996, aged 73.

Was offered the role of Mrs. Voorhees in Vendredi 13 (1980), but declined, and Betsy Palmer took her place. Coincidentally, her Bonnie et Clyde (1967) co-star, Michael J. Pollard, appeared in another 1980s slasher film, Massacre au camp d'été 3 (1989).
