How To Train Your Dragon: Why The New Astrid Actor Looks So Familiar
Image
If you're a fan of "How to Train Your Dragon," you may be pleasantly surprised at the changes director Dean DeBlois has made to the classic 2010 animated film (which he also co-directed) for his live-action remake. While the Viking Stoick is once again played by Gerard Butler and the Night Fury dragon Toothless looks virtually the same in both films, DeBlois gets a lot of mileage out of the new actors he casts to take over the roles. In addition to some welcome famous faces like Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, and Peter Serafinowicz, this version of "How to Train Your Dragon" has a pair of new leads in Mason Thames (playing dragon trainer Hiccup) and Nico Parker, who portrays dragon-training student Astrid.

While Parker may not yet be a name star in Hollywood, she's certainly not a total unknown. Although her acting career only began in 2019, she's appeared in several high-profile projects since then,...

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Star Nico Parker Says Astrid Is a ‘Boss Bitch’ in New Live-Action Film
Image
The cast and crew of the new live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon” celebrated the Los Angeles premiere Saturday at the Academy Museum.

On the carpet, the stars of the film spoke about the universal message of the bond between viking Hiccup and the dragon Toothless, and how it resonates with audiences of all ages. “One of the powerful things about the film is that it makes people feel seen,” Nico Parker, who plays Astrid, told Variety. “Despite the element that is otherworldly, whether you’re a Hiccup or an Astrid, a lot of people are touched by it.”

Gabriel Howell, who plays Snotlout, said he related to the characters the first time he watched the animated trilogy. “You feel in-between phases and in-between versions of yourself, and [director Dean DeBlois] injects the film with wonder and heart,” Howell said. “It’s the ultimate wish fulfillment, meeting a best friend who is a dragon.

Nico Parker On ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ Backlash Over Her Casting: “I Just Don’t Care”
Image
Nico Parker is paying no attention to the How to Train Your Dragon backlash over her casting.

In a new interview, Parker addresses the negativity surrounding her appearance in the live-action remake of the DreamWorks animated film.

“There’s some people that really love the animated movies and really want to see an exact play-by-play of that film, and I hope that you can watch [the new version] and find something that you love about it, regardless,” she told The Times of London.

She continued, “But for the people that just hate inclusivity, hate change — when it comes to that side of things, I just don’t care. If I wouldn’t value your opinion on most things in life, I can’t value your opinion on my hair. If I did, I would go mad.”

The controversy surrounding Parker’s casting in the role of Astrid is that the actress does not...

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Star Nico Parker Reacts to Trolls About Her Casting: “I Can’t Value Your Opinion on My Hair”

'Mamma Mia's Pierce Brosnan Knows Who The Daddy Is
Image
Is it the biggest unanswered question in cinematic history? Who is Sophie's father? It's the question that's plagued so many fans of the Mamma Mia! Cinematic Universe (Mmcu), but it also has an answer — one that our beloved Sam Carmichael (better known as actor Pierce Brosnan to the rest of you) knows. But the artist formerly known as James Bond is not going to be the one to spill the beans, it seems: no, he's letting the as-yet-to-be-confirmed third film, Mamma Mia! 3 (or Mamma 3!a to those with class and style) have the glory there. Which is absolutely maddening, but also completely and totally fair.

The actor was asked about the prospect of a third film during a chat with The Hollywood Reporter about his latest project, the Paramount+ drama, MobLand. And at the tail end of that interview, THR asked one of the greatest questions of our time: "I...

Image
Mamma Mia!took the box office by storm in 2008, with its sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Againarriving ten years later, but the Abba-infused movie musical franchise has fallen silent ever since. Global producer Judy Craymer has now shared some news that might inspire fans to sing from the rooftops again, as she has not only confirmed that Mamma Mia 3is still in active development, but also hinted that there could be a role for pop icon Sabrina Carpenter in the long-awaited third film, even though casting has not yet been finalized.

Fans campaigned for Carpenter to be in Mamma Mia 3 after the chart-topping singer started covering the movie's titular Abba song and other hits on tour. Many believed she would be the perfect fit to play Amanda Seyfried's onscreen daughter. When asked what role Carpenter could take in the third feature, Craymer suggested, "She'd be a goddess or...

Mamma Mia! producer considers Sabrina Carpenter for a possible third film
Amanda Seyfried in Mamma Mia! (2008)
The popular stage musical Mamma Mia!, which showcases the songs of 70s pop group Abba, is making a triumphant return to Broadway in a limited engagement at the Winter Garden Theatre with performances from August 2 and a gala official opening night on August 14. The play will be performed on the heels of George Clooney’s Good Night and Good Luck production. Additionally, the Clooney Good Night and Good Luck Broadway show was recently announced to be a first-time live play broadcast on CNN.

As Mamma Mia! returns to the stage, producer Judy Craymer sits down with Deadline to talk about the musical. Craymer teases a bit about what is coming next for the franchise, including a planned TV version. However, she retains the secrecy around the details of all her future plans and says, “It’ll be a comedy-drama made for TV. I’m not doing that now. But I...

Christine Baranski had fans laughing during her recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert as she dished on her Mamma Mia! co-stars- and one actor’s less-than-enthusiastic attitude toward dancing to Abba. Watch the video! Baranski, who played Tanya in the 2008 movie musical, recalled filming the joyful “Dancing Queen” number with co-stars Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård. Brett Goldstein and Jennifer Lopez's Office Romance on Netflix announces cast
Image
Brett Goldstein might be one of the more underrated players in movies and TV series. He doesn't just act, either. Nor does he only act and write. He creates, and what he comes up with are some excellent and highly entertaining ideas.

Many might know him from playing Roy Kent on the Apple TV series, Ted Lasso. Kent is a good-hearted menace. He is not easy to please, but he will help those in need. Goldstein plays the character dynamically and exceptionally well.

Some might know him from another Apple TV series, Shrinking. His part is minor on that show (he doesn't appear until season two), but essential. He plays the character who drives drunk and kills Jason Siegel's character's wife. The show is a comedy with a heavy dose of kind-hearted drama. Goldstein also co-wrote the episodes and created the show.

Brett Goldstein, Jennifer Lopez and Netflix should...

'That's Not My Job': George Clooney Explains Why He's Done Making Romantic Movies
Image
George Clooney is arguably one of the most popular leading men in Hollywood. However, the actor says he no longer has much interest in the romance genre.

"Look, I'm 63 years old. I'm not trying to compete with 25-year-old leading men," Clooney told 60 Minutes. That's not my job. I'm not doing romantic films anymore," he added. The actor is currently preparing for his Broadway debut in the upcoming production of Good Night, and Good Luck. The stage play is adapted from the 2005 film of the same name which starred David Strathairn as the newsman.

Image
George Clooney is putting his romance movie days behind him. Speaking to “60 Minutes” to promote his starring role in the Broadway production of “Good Night, and Good Luck,” Clooney told his fans that he will no longer act in “romantic films anymore.” Clooney’s last romantic-comedy was 2022’s “Ticket to Paradise” with Julia Roberts, which grossed a decent $168 million at the worldwide box office.

“Look, I’m 63 years old. I’m not trying to compete with 25-year-old leading men,” Clooney said. “That’s not my job. I’m not doing romantic films anymore.”

“60 Minutes” noted that Clooney’s “sexiest man of the year phase” in the early 2000s marked one of the heights of his film career, to which the Oscar winner agreed that it “was a big time” for him. However, that time is over. Across Clooney’s filmography, he appeared in such romance films as 1996’s...

20 Years Ago, Lena Headey Starred in a Criminally Underrated Rom-Com That’s as Bold as It Is Beautiful
Image
Between her prominent roles in projects like Game of Thrones, 300, and both The Purge and Terminator franchises, Lena Headeyis a certified badass when it comes to playing powerful leading characters. Headey's time as Cersei Lannister alone showcases her skill at developing a cruel, intimidating screen presence, which is why it's still surprising to learn the actor's legacy on film is as varied as it is compelling. In particular, those searching for Headey's softer side can do no better than Imagine Me & You, the 2005 rom-com that sees Headey trade her crown for a flower shop. Directed by Ol Parker, who later went on to direct Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Imagine Me & You offers the same blend of humor and heartwarming charm, delivering one of the most underrated rom-coms of the early 2000s in the process.

Why Meryl Streep Didn't Fully Return for Mamma Mia 2
Image
Quick Links Why Is Meryl Streep Not in Mamma Mia! 2? Meryl Streep Was Still Involved in Mamma Mia! 2 Will Meryl Streep Return For Mamma Mia 3? What Will Mamma Mia 3 Be About? What Is Meryl Streep Working On Now?

Meryl Streep, a Hollywood heavy hitter, has the resume to pick and choose her roles, and she has a reputation for taking on fresh and challenging parts. That's likely why the part of Donna Sheridan in Mamma Mia! appealed to her. Playing a mother with a complicated past who occasionally breaks out in song isn't something that comes around every day. However, sequels are more complicated (as in the case of Downton Abbey: A New Era) because Streep isn't as passionate about them. This preference possibly influenced why Meryl Streep didn't fully return in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

The widespread success of the original Mamma Mia! begged for a sequel,...

'How to Train Your Dragon' Director Addresses Live-Action Astrid Casting Controversy
Image
How to Train Your Dragon director Dean DeBlois has weighed in on the recent controversy around the decision to cast actress Nico Parker as Astrid in the live-action remake. Nico Parker, the daughter of Ticket to Paradise director Ol Parker and Westworld star Thandiwe Newton, has become a star in her own right, appearing in the live-action Dumbo and also as Sarah Miller on the hit HBO series The Last of Us. The decision to cast Nico Parker as Astrid in How to Train Your Dragon has caused a typical backlash that comes with casting a non-white actor as a previously white character, including the disappointing barrage of racist comments.

Now, director Dean DeBlois has weighed in on the casting decision. On Instagram, DelBois made a post talking about the decision to cast Parker in the role of Astrid for How to Train Your Dragon, saying that Parker captured the...

Live-Action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Director Responds to Astrid Casting Backlash
Image
Seemingly following in the footsteps of Disney, whose live-action remakes are now more frequent than their animated movies, DreamWorks has decided to give us a live-action remake of one of its most famous series, How to Train Your Dragon. The live-action remake of the first movie is scheduled for a 2025 release, and we have recently received some new footage from the movie.

And while we could debate the purpose of such a live-action remake, it is happening, and there is not much we can do there.

The first visuals look pretty nice if you ask us, and we are sure that the film will retain some of the charm of the original animated series.

But, as you might have assumed, there are also some controversies surrounding the upcoming movie and the biggest one at this point is the casting of Nico Parker, daughter of actress Thandiwe Newton and filmmaker Ol Parker,...

She found life hysterically funny and unbearably painful. Her company was exhilarating – she was even sharper and wittier than her legions of fans imagined her to be. But since the death of her husband,...

The Thursday Murder Club: David Tennant, Naomi Ackie & more cast in Pierce Brosnan mystery
Image
Back in 2020, it was announced that Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again director Ol Parker would be following that film up by taking the helm of The Thursday Murder Club, an adaptation of the debut novel by Richard Osman (creator and co-presenter of the BBC quiz show Pointless), for Amblin. Given that Parker’s involvement was announced just days before the pandemic lockdowns, it’s not surprising to hear that iteration of the project didn’t hold together… but The Thursday Murder Club is still moving forward. A couple months ago, word came out that Pierce Brosnan (GoldenEye), Helen Mirren (The Queen), and Ben Kingsley (Iron Man 3) were being eyed for lead roles in the film, which is now coming our way from Home Alone and Harry Potter director Chris Columbus. Now Deadline confirms that Brosnan, Mirren, and Kingsley are on board to star in the film alongside Celia Imrie...

Celia Imrie
Celia Imrie completes the main cast of the film adaptation of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club. More here.

The Thursday Murder Club follows the residents of a retirement home who find themselves attempting to the solve the case of a deceased property developer. It was reported last month that Dame Helen Mirren will play the role of Elizabeth Best, a former spy, Pierce Brosnan will play Ron Ritchie,...

London Book Fair Attracts Hollywood Producers and Execs as Adaptation Craze Continues: ‘IP Supercharges the Conversation’
Image
This year’s Oscars were as much a celebration of books as they were cinema. Five of the 10 best picture nominees were based on books, and three of those – “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things” and “The Zone of Interest” – took home the most statues overall. Even the winner for best animated picture, Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” was loosely inspired by a 1937 novel Miyazaki had read as a child.

Which is why many of those partying in L.A. on Sunday night boarded planes across the Atlantic days later bound for the London Book Fair, which kicked off yesterday and runs through the end of the week, in search of their next Oscar-contending project. “It feels like there’s an influx of film and television executives, studio executives, producers etc., all coming into town,” Jason Richman, co-head of media rights at UTA, tells Variety.

With TV also wild about...

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 1: Everything We Know So Far
Jeremy Irvine, Hermione Corfield, Jamie Roy, and Harriet Slater in Outlander: Blood of My Blood (2025)
The original Doughtlander may not be over, but Outlander: Blood of My Blood hopes to close the gap.

For sure, it will be taking over where Outlander leaves off, even if it explores a story long before Jamie and Claire were figments of their parents' imagination.

Here’s what we know bout Blood of My Blood Season 1 so far.

What is Outlander?

It’s best to start with what we know, which is what came before. Outlander is based on a series of books by author Diana Gabaldon.

Outlander is a time-traveling love story between 20th-century (married) nurse Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser and 18th-century Jamie Fraser.

When visiting the ancestral home of her husband, Frank, Claire stumbles through the rocks at Craigh na Dun, which takes her back in time.

Unable to easily find her way back, the sassy lady leans on handsome laird Jamie for protection, and soon, they are in love.

How to Train Your Dragon: What to Expect From the Live-Action Adaptation
Image
With the announcement of a live-action adaptation of the highly successful animated feature film How to Train Your Dragon, many are quick to question the true intentions of the creators at Dreamworks and Universal. Though some scoff at the mere mention of a new reboot, there should be reasonable anticipation for the potential narratives and creative possibilities of an expanded Dragon universe.

The odds are surely stacked against Universal. Audiences and critics seem to be weary of the exhaustive effort Disney has put into their live-action adaptations. Starting with 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, Disney has repeatedly brought their animated favorites to real life with upcoming releases including Snow White, Moana, and Lilo & Stitch.

Universal has also struggled to launch an expanded cinematic universe. Their unsuccessful Dark Universe, initiated by Tom Cruise’s Mummy adaptation, failed enough to shut down the whole operation. Fast & Furious is currently delayed due to...

‘Suncoast’ Review: Nico Parker, Laura Linney, Woody Harrelson In Heartfelt Semi-Autobiographical Story Colliding With Real Life Events – Sundance Film Festival
Image
Laura Chinn’s feature film writing and directing debut hits close to the heart — her heart especially — in a semi-autobiographical story set in 2005 and inspired by her own growing pains at a dark time in her family’s life as her brother is dying of cancer and moved unknowingly into what turned out to be the same nursing facility, Suncoast, where Terri Schiavo was also a patient.

If you don’t know the name, Terri Schiavo, you probably weren’t seeing the news in 2005 as this was the notorious right-to-die case that actually started in 1998 in a dispute between Schiavo’s husband and parents over removing the feeding tube of the woman who was in a irreversible vegetative state. It sparked worldwide protests by many on all sides including religious zealots, non-stop news coverage, government interference and more all playing out in front of this Florida facility where Chinn’s brother,...

Meryl Streep initially had no interest in a Mamma Mia! sequel but was eventually convinced by producers' idea for a prequel following a younger version of Donna Sheridan. Streep's character was killed off in the sequel to allow the story to be told through prequel flashbacks, where Lily James portrayed a younger version of Donna. Despite her character's death, Meryl Streep is willing to return for Mamma Mia 3 if the film is ever green-lit.

Meryl Streep, a Hollywood heavy hitter, has the resume to pick and choose her roles, and she has a reputation for taking on fresh and challenging parts. That's likely why the part of Donna Sheridan in Mamma Mia! appealed to her. Playing a mother with a complicated past who occasionally breaks...

Parker and Harrelson’s characters bond over their shared grief, with the title coming from the Suncoast hospital center where Parker’s brother is being treated. Ella Anderson, Daniella Taylor, Amarr, and Ariel Martin also star.
