Biography

    • Edward Leon Park, sometimes known as E. L. Park or Ed Park, was the owner of a costume store in L.A.'s Chinatown when he was recruited to play Charlie Chan in Behind That Curtain (1929). He was the first Chinese American to play Charlie Chan on-screen. He was married to Oie Chan and had two daughters, Bo-Ling and Bo-Ching Park, who all played minor parts in Charlie Chan films.

Trivia

  • Not much is known about the first person to play Charlie Chan in a Fox production. Indeed, it is not even known if he was a professional actor. What is known is that he was the last person of Asian extraction to play the part.
  • Served as an interpreter at the Angel Island immigration station for many years before coming to Los Angeles in 1928.
  • His death obituary listed him as being born 1876, his WWI draft says he was born April 1881.
  • Has two daughters. Actresses Bo Ling and Bo Ching.
