It has been well over two years since “Magazine Dreams” made its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Following its premiere, the movie received largely mixed reviews but most critics were quick to heap praise on the performance given by its star, Jonathan Majors. It was subsequently picked up by Searchlight Pictures, which originally slated it to be released on December 8, 2023 — likely targeting a potential awards campaign for Majors.
The actor was caught up, however, in a domestic assault scandal in March 2023 that tarnished his previously shining, fast-rising star profile. Searchlight later dropped “Magazine Dreams,” reportedly due to both Majors’ assault case and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Briarcliff Entertainment has since acquired the film’s distribution rights, though, and it is now on the verge of finally being released.

Two years ago, prior to Jonathan Majors being arrested for assault and harassment of his former girlfriend, his movie Magazine Dreams was a critical hit. Reviews praised the actor as "a revelation" who was Oscar-bound for his "astonishing lead performance" as Killian Maddox, an aspiring bodybuilder. The film received an 82 percent at Rotten Tomatoes (based on 95 reviews), and a 72 score at Metacritic (based on 22 reviews). But Majors was arrested and the film was shelved, abandoned by its distributor, Searchlight Pictures.
Cut to today, and Magazine Dreams' new distributor, Briarcliff Entertainment, is finally dropping the film in theaters on Friday. Have critics changed their tune following the actor's many recent controversies, which include his eventual conviction on one assault count and and the release in recent days of audio with him admitting that he "aggressed" his ex-girlfriend?
Surprisingly, the answer is no.

After his exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and subsequent legal troubles), Jonathan Majors has been looking to get his acting career back on track. It begins with the release of his newest movie, Magazine Dreams, which drops in theaters on March 21.
Days ahead of the movie's premiere, Magazine Dreams garnered its debut Rotten Tomatoes score with its early reviews by critics. The film has a Certified Fresh score of 84%, which is one of the best-rated films of Majors' career. The former MCU star's performance in particular is getting big praise from many critics, with some suggesting he'd likely have been up for an Oscar for his role if not for his real-life controversies.
As Silver Screen Riot critic Matt Oakes stated, "In another multiverse, Majors could have won an Academy Award for his work here. In this one, it may end up being the tragic capstone on a too-short career.

The Briarcliff CEO has revealed why his distributor is still releasing Magazine Dreams. The upcoming film tells the story of Jonathan Majors' amateur bodybuilder who confronts his past and pushes his physical limits to gain recognition for his craft. Magazine Dreams is written and directed by Elijah Bynum, and the cast features Harrison Page, Taylour Paige, and Harriet Sansom Harris. The film was originally supposed to be distributed by Searchlight, who dropped the project when Majors was convicted of assaulting and harassing his girlfriend.
Per the Wall Street Journal, Briarcliff CEO Tom Ortenberg addressed taking on the film. Let’s get this out of the way first: In December 2023, actor Jonathan Majors was found guilty on two of four charges in a domestic violence case involving ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari — assault in the third degree and harassment in the second degree — and sentenced to 52 weeks in a domestic violence intervention program. After Marvel Studios made the controversial decision to fire him, Searchlight Pictures announced it would no longer release writer-director Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams, in which Majors earned raves at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
Cut to 2025 and Majors has paid his debt to society, and the daredevils at Briarcliff Entertainment have picked up Magazine Dreams for U.S. distribution. Whatever your stance is on the actor, there is no denying that Majors' stunning turn as a rage-filled bodybuilder in Magazine Dreams is so transfixing that it’s only a stone’s throw away from iconic performances by Robert De Niro...

Magazine Dreams has had a long and winding road to getting a wide release date and theatrical distribution. After its premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and winning the Sundance Special Jury Prize, the film was initially slated for December 2023 release after being acquired by Searchlight Pictures. However, following controversy surrounding Jonathan Majors, who stars in and executive produced the film, Magazine Dreams was subsequently dropped by Searchlight, leaving the film without a home for quite some time.
Now, Entertainment Weekly has exclusively revealed the first official trailer for the film, which was written and directed by Elijah Bynum. "The world ain't fair. It ain't supposed to be fair... that's how it works." Briarcliff Entertainment has finally unveiled an official trailer for Magazine Dreams, the long-delayed film featuring actor Jonathan Majors as a psychotic body builder in LA. This initially premiered back at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival to great reviews (here's mine), and was bought by Searchlight Pictures pretty quickly. But then Majors was arrested and then found guilty for assault and harassment, so they sold off the film and pulled it from the schedule. Briarcliff has picked it up instead years later and is now setting it for a March 2025 release coming soon. An amateur bodybuilder struggles to find any human connection in this exploration of celebrity and violence. Magazine Dreams stars Jonathan Majors as a body builder named Killian Maddox, who is obsessed with winning body sculpting competitions but has nothing else in life. Jonathan Majors’ violent bodybuilding drama “Magazine Dreams” has received its first trailer, after the actor was convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and the film was temporarily shelved. It will now release in theaters on March 21 from Briarcliff Entertainment.
In the film, Majors plays amateur bodybuilder Killian Maddox, who aspires to make a name for himself within the violent world of bodybuilding. However, to the detriment of his physical and mental health, he continues to strive to become a star, as he continues to go against doctors’ orders and grapple with his peers.
While “Magazine Dreams” was met with buzz after its debut at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, sparking a bidding war that led the film to find a home at Searchlight Pictures for a reported mid-seven figures, the distributor dropped the film in January 2024 after Majors was accused of domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari.

Premiering two years ago at the Sundance Film Festival, Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams was to be the start of a major year for Jonathan Majors, delivering a ferocious performance in the Taxi Driver-esque drama set in the world of bodybuilding. Picked up by Searchlight Pictures for a pretty penny, it was then shelved after assault charges against Majors. Eventually dropped by the distributor it was recently picked up by Briarcliff Entertainment who will give it a March 21 theatrical release. Here’s the synopsis: “Killian Maddox is consumed by his dream of becoming a world famous bodybuilder and one day gracing the cover of fitness magazines. He lives a lonely, regimented life, and his relentless drive for perfection only pushes him deeper towards self-destruction, but beneath his tenacious pursuit of superstardom lies a desperate, aching need for human connection.

Vixen is a piece of Sixties sexplotation from director Russ Meyer. The film straddles soft core porn, farce and action. It starts with a somewhat innuendos voice over placing the viewer in the Canadian bush. Tom Palmer (Garth Pillsbury) is a bush pilot. In his light plane he connects the isolated communities of the Canadian wilderness. Erica Gavin plays his loving and unfaithful wife, the film's titular - pun intended - protagonist.
While her husband is away, the hypersexual Vixen Palmer plays with almost anyone she can get her hands on. The exception is her brother Judd's (Jon Evans) friend Niles (Harrison Page), a black Vietnam draft dodger to whom she is overtly racist. Just as things are coming to a head between Vixen and Niles, Tom finds a new client, O'Bannion (Michael Donovan O'Donnell). O'Bannion is an Ira terrorist who plans to hijack Tom's plane and take it to Cuba.

Russ Meyer, who singlehandedly put the sexploitation film on the map in 1959 with his pioneering The Immoral Mr. Tees, was a veritable one-man band. He produced, wrote, directed, shot, and edited his own films, which are instantly recognizable by an inimitable aesthetic dominated by cuts delivered at a stupefyingly rat-a-tat pace. Meyer described his personal tastes as centered on “big bosoms and square jaws”, and his films usually traded in stereotypes pushed to the limits of absurdity and the cartoonish. Meyer’s ability to serve up heaping helpings of unabashed sex laced with withering social satire is virtually unrivaled.
So it was a lamentable loss for lovers of film (smut or otherwise) when Meyer’s work, practically ubiquitous in the VHS era, sank into unavailability at the dawn of the DVD era, with the sole exception of his one major studio production: 1970’s Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. But...

The 1990s was a peak time for martial arts movies, with a distinctive '90s' fusion of old-school kung fu choreography, hyper-dynamic action sequences, and different martial arts styles that thrilled global audiences. Martial arts cinema was making a distinct change at this time as more classic Hollywood elements were being used throughout films as their popularity grew. The best films of this era used those elements while remaining true to Eastern martial arts traditions that focused on stories of honor and redemption to make films that were both exciting and emotionally satisfying.
The 1990s weaving of acrobatic fight sequences with larger-than-life characters made the decade a golden age for performances in martial arts films. Jet Li’s Chen Zhen in Fist of Legend (1996) and Jackie Chan’s Wong Fei-hung in Drunken Master II (1994) both had incredible charisma and depth in their onscreen roles, making the martial arts more than mere action and combat.

After some rearranging, Jonathan Majors’s Magazine Dreams will be released on March 21, 2025, courtesy of Briarcliff Entertainment. Previously, the bodybuilder drama focused on Killian Maddox’s life and struggles premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival with talk of a Best Actor nod at the Oscars for Majors’ powerful performance. Unfortunately, Majors’s Hollywood cache quickly fell when he was found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of assault and harassment against his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. Searchlight dropped its distribution of Magazine Dreams shortly after Majors’ story made headlines, making Briarcliff Entertainment a knight in shining armor.
On the bright side, audiences will see the hard work of everyone involved with the film early next year. Elijah Bynum directs Magazine Dreams from his script, with Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige, and four-time Mr. Universe Mike O’Hearn co-starring.

Actor Jonathan Majors has reportedly settled a lawsuit filed by his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, stemming from their highly-publicized trial, where the actor was found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of assault and harassment. Jabbari filed the lawsuit in March 2024, stemming from allegations on Majors' end that he had never physically assaulted a woman before.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jabbari's lawyer Brittany Henderson claims that the lawsuit was "favorably settled" after legal representatives for both parties appeared in court together to say that a deal had been reached. Terms of the agreement have ultimately, however, not been disclosed, and there has been no official comment from Majors on the matter.

Doc Severinsen was a snitch.
After a night off, Johnny Carson was back in his Tonight Show chair, and it didn’t take him long to notice something was off. A cigarette box that had been a mainstay on his desk for years was broken. “What the hell happened to this?” Carson asked the bandleader. “You know how long I’ve had this cigarette box? I brought this out from New York. What on earth?”
“Rickles!” came the shouts from offstage, either from the audience, stagehands or both. “Don Rickles,” Doc clarified in case Carson thought some other Rickles was the perpetrator.
Carson wasn’t happy. “What the hell did he do with it?” he wondered. “The wood is broken! That’s an heirloom!”
It was an easy explanation. He was screwing around with guest host Bob Newhart, banging Johnny’s desk and accidentally busting Carson’s box.
This indignity would not stand.

Jonathan Majors will not be in the upcoming Avengers movies, as was the original plan at Marvel Studios, but he will still be back on the big screen in 2025. A release window has been announced for Magazine Dreams, a new movie starring Majors in the leading role.
Per Deadline, Magazine Dreams is set to be released in theaters nationwide in "early 2025," but an exact date hasn't yet been pinned down. The release news follows the movie enduring some turbulence, as it was previously set to be released by Searchlight Pictures. Because of Majors' well-known arrest and subsequent guilty verdict in 2023, the company ultimately dropped Magazine Dreams from the release calendar. It has now been picked up by Briarcliff Entertainment, the distributor behind the new film The Apprentice featuring Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump.

“Magazine Dreams” is turning the page.
The drama, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023, quickly became one of the most buzzed-about films at the festival and was promptly acquired by Searchlight Pictures. But after its star Jonathan Majors was found guilty of assault and harassment, the studio dropped the movie from its release schedule. It was initially thought of as a potential Oscar powerhouse, especially for Majors’ towering lead performance.
Now, Briarcliff Entertainment, which is releasing the similarly hot-button Donald Trump movie “The Apprentice” later this month, has acquired the rights to “Magazine Dreams.” Briarcliff is planning an early 2025 release.
The film is the directorial debut of writer Elijah Bynum, who recently co-wrote Lee Daniels’ Netflix horror movie “The Deliverance.” It follows a bodybuilder (Majors) who slips into a world of obsession and violence in his quest for body perfection. The movie also stars Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige,...

One week after Jonathan Majors was convicted of assault and harassment, his film “Magazine Dreams” has been released back to the filmmakers by Searchlight, which will no longer be distributing, Variety has confirmed.
The Walt Disney Studios specialty arm acquired the body building drama a few weeks after it premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. The filmmakers will now be free to shop the film to other distributors.
“Magazine Dreams,” directed by Elijah Bynum, debuted to positive reviews at the festival and sold for a reported mid-seven figures. Majors was hailed for his performance as amateur body builder Killian Maddox.
But Majors’ March 25 arrest put the film’s release in question, and it was officially removed from Searchlight’s calendar in October.
The Majors conviction came after an incident involving his ex-partner Grace Jabbari. His sentence hearing is scheduled for Feb. 6.

Jonathan Majors' film Magazine Dreams is on hold indefinitely after his trial, leaving Disney undecided on its release. Disney may use morals clauses as a reason to avoid paying the promised $2 million to the film's financiers. Insider tip sheet "What I'm Hearing" suggests that Disney is in no rush to make a final decision on releasing the acclaimed movie.
Jonathan Majors’ Magazine Dreams, which was getting Oscar buzz, receives an update after the actor’s trial verdict. Has there ever been a rise and fall quite as swift and dramatic as that of Jonathan Majors? 2023 started off as a killer year for Majors. After years as an up-and-comer, he had three films set to debut within the first three months of the year. His two big studio films, Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania and Creed III, seemed poised to make him a real-deal movie star, while his indie film, Magazine Dreams, was going to serve as an acting showcase.
Indeed, when the film debuted last January at Sundance, many believed his tortured, Travis Bickle-like role would win him an Oscar nomination (I was one of them in my review). His character, Killian Maddox, a wanna-be bodybuilder with serious anger issues, was a distinct creation for him and director Elijah Bynum. The movie quickly sold to Fox Searchlight, and a December 2023 release date was set. Everyone assumed...

Hot on the heels of Warner Bros. moving Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to Friday, December 22, 2023, and Robert De Niro’s Alto Knights to later in 2024, Disney is doing its version of the release date shuffle for two of its upcoming releases. Additionally, Searchlight is no longer opening Magazine Dreams, starring Jonathan Majors, on December 8. Majors faces a trial date on November 29, 2023, for a domestic violence case involving his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari.
Meanwhile, Disney will push its live-action adaptation of Snow White from March 22, 2024, to March 21, 2025, with Disney/Pixar’s Elio going from March 1, 2024, to June 13, 2025. The shuffle stems from uncertainty about the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
Other projects jumping ship include an untitled Disney feature moving from February 14, 2024, to April 5, 2024. Disney is also pulling The Bikeriders from its December 1 theatrical release because Queen B, Beyonce, is dropping a concert film in theaters, and, of course, the actors’ strike.

Jonathan Majors is stripping down for his latest movie role, but there's no telling when viewers will see it. Following his turns as boxing character Damian in "Creed III" and "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" villain Kang the Conqueror, the actor's next big film was slated to be "Magazine Dreams." However, Variety reported on Oct. 27 that the film's December release date has been pulled off of Walt Disney Studios's calendar amid Majors's assault and harassment allegations.
The actor was arrested on March 25 in New York City following an alleged domestic dispute, which he's pled not guilty to, and he's slated to appear in court for the matter on Nov. 29. Now, it's unclear if/when Majors's drama film - which made its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival - will get a rescheduled theatrical release.

Happy Emmy season, “you clock-watching fucks” — Logan Roy is still leading the way.
Brian Cox has submitted his performance as Logan Roy, the recently departed Waystar Royco CEO on HBO’s “Succession,” into the lead actor (drama) category. Cox’s team exclusively confirmed to Variety that the actor’s iconic turn as the bold father and media mogul will be considered alongside his two co-stars, Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin, who opted to switch into the category for the show’s fourth and final season.
Cox’s character died in the third episode of this season, “Connor’s Wedding,” which left many pundits speculating the Scottish actor, who received two previous noms in the lead drama actor field, would downgrade to either the supporting actor or guest categories. That won’t be the case, which puts the drama series uniquely positioned to make history in several ways.

Magazine Dreams. The Sundance Film Festival returned this year for its first in-person edition since the oblivious winter of 2020, when Zola was the talk of Park City and the coronavirus still seemed like something that Purell could contain. During two consecutive years of virtual iterations, Sundance managed to launch visionary, critically-praised narrative features onto dissimilar post-festival trajectories. Rebecca Hall’s Passing, a provocative adaptation of Nella Larsen’s novella, rode out awards season on the considerable strengths of its lead performances, only to fizzle out come Oscar time. Conversely, the Academy Awards triumph of Siân Heder’s Coda, now the first festival selection to win Best Picture, is surely fueling the daydreams of many past, present, and future Sundance-stamped filmmakers. Acquired by Apple for $25 million and showered with a $10 million awards campaign that equaled its production budget, Coda seems to offer definitive proof that no matter how visually flat and...

2023 Sundance Film Festival: Early highlights include ‘Fairyland,’ ‘Magazine Dreams,’ ‘Past Lives’ …
The first week of the Sundance Film Festival is drawing mixed-to-positive reactions, but several performers have garnered unanimous praise. Jonathan Majors made a big splash in Elijah Bynum’s “Magazine Dreams.” He stars as Killian Maddox, an obsessive bodybuilder who takes care of his Vietnam vet grandfather (Harrison Page) and pursues a relationship with a store clerk (Hayley Bennett) while trying to become a celebrity. The film, which is being compared to Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver,” looked noteworthy heading into the festival and is reportedly just as intense as early buzz had promised. Even critics who have expressed skepticism regarding the film’s third act are in awe of Majors’ committed work.
Kate Erbland of IndieWire writes, “As mistakes and missteps and pain continues to pile on to Killian, Majors turns an already wonderfully empathetic and deeply touching performance into something much more brutal, something explosive, something truly shocking.

Written and directed by Elijah Bynum, Magazine Dreams operates on sheer ferocity alone. The film tackles a plethora of thought-provoking themes, and it leans into the heaviness and discomfort quite a bit, so much so that it will have audiences squirming in their seats. Powered by an incredible, devoted performance from Jonathan Majors, Magazine Dreams stumbles in its last act and repeats itself too often, but it is gripping and intense all the same.
Killian Maddox (Majors) is an aspiring bodybuilder who hopes to one day be famous, emulating his idol by being on the cover of magazines. Killian lives with his sick grandfather, William Lattimore (Harrison Page), and struggles to balance his bodybuilding training and food intake while taking care of his grandfather, working at the local grocery store, and attending court-mandated therapy sessions. Killian has difficulty keeping his temper at bay and lives under constant, and self-imposed, pressure to be the perfect bodybuilder.

Jonathan Majors’ incredible transformation to play bodybuilder Killian Maddox in Magazine Dreams is breathtaking, first seen in godlike glory in a daydream, striking the requisite professional competition poses, caressed by shafts of golden light. But as the soaring strains of Jason Mills’ score wind down into a deflating drone, signaling trouble ahead, the image shifts to Killian under the naked lightbulbs of his humble garage. That’s the first hint that this physically imposing Adonis is in fact a lonely, painfully shy and desperately insecure man, whose feelings of inadequacy, buried self-loathing and resentment often manifest in eruptions of violent rage.
It’s an all-in performance for the ages, layered with as much vulnerability as anger, and it’s to Majors’ credit that our hearts ache for Killian even — or perhaps especially — when he’s out of control. Majors and writer-director Elijah Bynum manage the considerable feat of making us...

Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams is both too much and not enough. At its center is a role for which star Jonathan Majors has said that he “ate 6,100 calories a day for about four months” to prepare — work that needed to pay off to convince us of its central character, and it does. Majors plays an amateur bodybuilder named Killian Maddox who, at the movie’s start, has already gotten in trouble for his anger and antisocial issues, who is already in counseling for his past misjudgments, and is already...

Plot: An amateur bodybuilder (Jonathan Majors) struggles with severe psychological issues while dreaming of stardom.
Review: Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams offers star Jonathan Majors his meatiest role to date. Undergoing a massive transformation that saw him change his body into that of a professional-level bodybuilder, his Killian Maddox is reminiscent of the roles Robert De Niro famously played by Martin Scorsese. Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy both famously inspired Todd Phillips’ Joker (we recently did a Face Off comparing Joker to Taxi Driver), and Bynum’s inspirations seem similar. Yet, as often as we’ve seen this type of role played by white actors, it’s relatively rare for a black actor to dig his teeth into material like this. His race shakes up the formula, making the character a distinct creation for Bynum and Majors.

The Sundance Film Festival-hosted world premiere Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams may have gotten off to a bumpy start as traffic delays and festival congestion in Park City caused the film to start 45 minutes late. But after the credits rolled and the lights came up, its star Jonathan Majors faced the Eccles Theatre audience and received an electric standing ovation.
In what many are calling a brutal and fully committed performance, Majors stars as Killian Maddox, an amateur bodybuilder who sacrifices health, both mental and physical, to pursue a dream of superstardom while he struggles to maintain control of a volatile temper.
The official fest synopsis calls the film “a provocative film that respects the dignity of its protagonist as it pulls no punches in portraying the most physically and emotionally painful moments of his darkening odyssey.” Those who caught the screening were quick to describe it as Taxi Driver.

Magazine Dreams is a drama and second feature directed by Elijah Bynum, which stars Jonathan Majors, Haley Bennett, Taylor Paige, and Harrison Page
The film opens with a beautiful shot of Killian Maddox (Majors) showing off his chiseled physique under an orange hue of lights as if he’s at a bodybuilding competition. This is overlaid with a voiceover of him having a discussion with his therapist about his erratic behavior after a stint in the hospital. Killian takes working out very seriously and takes steroids to achieve the perfect body. He seems to be on the Asd spectrum and writes letters to his favorite bodybuilder Brad Vanderhorne (Michael O’Hearn) in hopes of hearing from him. He has no friends, only his grandfather (Page) whom he takes care of. There is Jessica (Bennett), a woman at the local grocery store who he has a crush on. He asks her on a date,...
