CBS Cancels New Sitcom With 86% Rt Score After 1 Season
Image
CBS has decided which shows will not return for another season. Despite positive reviews, Poppa's House was canceled before its first season aired in full.

Per Deadline, CBS axed not just one, but two shows: Poppa's House and The Summit. The sitcom that comes from Damon Wayans Sr. and Damon Wayans Jr. premiered in October 2024 to positive reviews. However, that wasn't enough to keep it on the air. With a season finale set for release later this month, Poppa's House will end after 18 episodes.

Poppa's House was created by Wayans Sr. and Kevin Hench. The series starred Wayans Sr. and Damon Wayans Jr. as a father and son duo. Essence Atkins and Tetona Jackson also had main roles Dr. Ivy Reed, Poppa's new co-host, and Nina, respectively. It followed legendary radio host and happily divorced Poppa, who struggles when a new female co-host is hired, all while dealing with parenting his adult son.

CBS Cancels ‘Poppa’s House’ and ‘The Summit’ After One Season Each
Image
CBS has canceled “Poppa’s House” and “The Summit” after one season each.

Neither the sitcom from Damon Wayans Sr. and Damon Wayans Jr., nor the mountainous competition series will return on the network’s schedule next season.

“Poppa’s House” was created by Wayans Sr. and Kevin Hench, and starred the real-life father-son duo as father and son, alongside Essence Atkins and Tetona Jackson. Geoffrey Owens, Caleb Johnson, River Blossom and Wendy Raquel Robinson had recurring roles.

“The Summit” was a spinoff of an Australian series of the same name. Hosted by Manu Bennett, the series followed a group of contestants tasked with climbing a treacherous mountain, all while surmounting mental and social challenges.

The news of these cancellations comes as CBS has ordered two new projects to series: “Dmv,” a single-camera comedy starring Harriett Dyer, Tim Meadows, Molly Kearney and Alex Tarrant; and “Einstein,” a drama led by Matthew Gray Gubler and Rosa Salazar.

Mr. Santa: A Christmas Extravaganza (2024)
Mr. Santa: A Christmas Extravaganza (2024) Movie Review: A poorly conceived holiday movie that neither saves Christmas nor itself
Mr. Santa: A Christmas Extravaganza (2024)
Christmas movies are a dime a dozen — especially when the Holiday season is just around the corner. The priorities of these movies are pretty straightforward. They are either about the togetherness that the season brings for families – a good narrative would use this aspect to either bring estranged ones together or dysfunctional ones closer. Subsequently, there are those movies that take the holiday spirit head-on, and push the viewers, and humans in general, to be at least a little bit kinder to each other. And then there are some that use the ‘saving Christmas’ narrative; the big-ol-grinch trying to mess things up followed up by a redemption of sorts.

“Mr. Santa: A Christmas Extravaganza” wants to be all of them at once. It follows three teenage high schoolers – Aj (Fey Soetan), Logan (Emmet Smith), and Keyara (Shanel Cheatham) who represent the geeks of the grade. The three have been best...

‘Poppa’s House’ Review: Damon Wayans Sr. and Jr.’s Warm Familial Chemistry Boosts an Otherwise Slight CBS Sitcom
Image
Back before social media became irrationally obsessed with nepo babies, we used to accept that comedy could be a family business to at least some degree, and that if your TV show or movie featured one person named “Wayans” in the cast, there were probably 10 or 15 other people with that last name working behind the scenes in various capacities.

If you were raised on In Living Color, watching the Wayans torch get passed from Keenan Ivory Wayans to siblings Damon, Kim, Shawn, Marlon and their additional brothers, sisters, children, aunts, uncles and cousins over three decades has been the source of much amusement and a fair amount of talent.

Though the Damons Wayans, Jr. and Sr., have played father and son before on ABC’s beloved Happy Endings, the new CBS sitcom Poppa’s House is their most extended starring vehicle in this capacity. The series also features Kim as director-producer,...

Sitcom Review Roundup: Do New Comedies Happy’s Place and Poppa’s House Bring the Laughs?
Image
Sitcoms are back! Well, not really. But NBC and CBS are partying like it’s 1994 this fall and rolling out a pair of old-fashioned situation comedies that would’ve fit right in on a primetime schedule three decades ago: NBC’s Happy’s Place (premiering Friday at 8/7c), starring Reba McEntire; and CBS’ Poppa’s House (premiering Monday at 8:30 pm), pairing up Damon Wayans with his son Damon Wayans Jr. Both shows feature seasoned sitcom veterans cracking jokes in multi-cam yukfests… but unfortunately, both seem to be sorely lacking in the laughs department.

Happy’s Place reunites McEntire with her Reba co-star...

‘I’ll Be Right There’ Review: Edie Falco Leads a Wry Comedy as the Wise and Weary Heart of a Family
Image
In one of the best scenes in I’ll Be Right There, a character reveals a family story involving an improbable getaway driver. Taking in this tale is her middle-aged daughter, who knows a thing or two about driving — although her role behind the wheel is more along the lines of schlepping to and fro than making a break for it. These two strong women are played, respectively, by Jeannie Berlin and Edie Falco, actors of ineffable down-to-earth zing. When, later in the movie, the screen fills with a slo-mo shot of them running side by side down a hospital corridor, it feels like a winking, loving gift, one of the giddy dividends from this wry take on family and midlife anxieties.

Set and shot in a Northeastern hamlet (Pearl River, in New York’s Rockland County), director Brendan Walsh’s second feature (after Centigrade) is a modestly scaled affair that...

Dispatches From The Picket Lines: ‘Breaking Bad’ & ‘Better Call Saul’ Alums Hit The Street In L.A.; Kids/Family TV Day In NYC
Image
This is Day 120 of the WGA strike and Day 47 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Amid the heat in Los Angeles, the cast and crew members of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul hit the picket lines Tuesday at Sony Pictures Studios. Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Betsy Brandt, Rhea Seehorn, Jesse Plemons and Matt Jones were among the stars seen strolling past the familiar rainbow in Culver City.

“Honestly, it just feels like it’s just beginning,” Paul told Deadline as the SAG-AFTRA strike approaches Day 50 on Friday. “It’s important for everyone out there to know we’re not going anywhere. … We’re fighting the good fight. We’re standing in solidarity with every SAG member out there, trying to make ends meet, put food on the table and do what we love.”

One of the key proposals from both SAG-AFTRA and the WGA, the latter of which remains a...

Susie Searches Review
Image
A college student with a terminally ill mother and struggling podcast decides to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a popular classmate. Susie Searches is a dark comedy and borderline sinister thriller on the trappings of social media fixation. The need for belonging and a desperate desire for fame leads a seemingly sympathetic protagonist down a troubling path. The film makes clever use of voiceover narration, reaction shots, and deft camera placement to layer a narrative with twists aplenty. Some you can spot a mile away but the performances and directorial execution is very good.

Susie Wallace (Kiersey Clemons), sporting braces and a bright smile, sits at her desk for her true crime podcast. Susie Searches dives into unsolved crimes with unfettered passion. She tells her nonexistent audience of a special gift. Susie always had the ability to guess the ending before anyone else. A flashback shows a young Susie (Ellie Reine...

‘Susie Searches’ Review: Kiersey Clemons’ True Crime Podcaster Attracts More Attention Than She Bargained For
Image
The morbid draw of true crime — vicariously experiencing other people’s tragedies by sifting through the elements that caused them — goes under the microscope in the kitschy whodunnit “Susie Searches.” Sophie Kargman’s feature debut, expanded from her short of the same name, plays on the dangers that come when voyeur becomes an interference, but the sort-of thriller doesn’t have the bite to investigate the provocative sympathy it has for its meddling antihero.

An aspiring gumshoe, Susie is first introduced as a precocious grade schooler, sitting beside her mother, Anne (Jammie Patton) as the two read a detective novel — the nice kind that encourages adolescent curiosity and ends with a virtuous sleuth catching a mustache-twirling menace. An affecting montage shows the pair continuing their shared hobby as the years pass. Anne falls ill as her daughter dutifully cares for her, growing into a wannabe wunderkind (Kiersey Clemons), now a...

TIFF Review: Susie Searches is a Quirky Look at the Destructive Nature of Popularity
WESTWOOD, CA - OCTOBER 14: Actress Kiersey Clemons arrives at Bottega Veneta Hosts Hammer Museum Gala In The Garden on October 14, 2017 in Westwood, California. (Photo by Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic)
Susie Wallis (Kiersey Clemons) has never met a mystery she couldn’t solve. At least not when it comes to those that populate the crime books her mother (Jammie Patton’s Anne) read to her as a child. It got to the point where she wondered if they should stop reading them altogether, but Susie refused. She didn’t care that she always guessed the culprit. All she cared about was spending time with Mom. So when Anne’s Ms diagnosis advanced enough to take away her speech, Susie took over reading duties to keep the tradition alive. And she even took things one step further by choosing to make her mother’s wish come true: using her knack for literary detective work to do good in the world and become famous.

Unlike her college’s quasi-celebrity Jessie (Alex Wolff), however, you can’t just post something online and become an overnight sensation.

‘That Damn Michael Che’ Trailer: ‘SNL’ Star Courts Controversy in HBO Max Comedy
Image
HBO Max has released the first official trailer for “That Damn Michael Che,” a new six-episode original comedy series starring — you guessed it — Michael Che. The “Saturday Night Live” star, co-head writer, and stand-up comedian will use the series to address controversial topics — which he’s been known to do in the past. From this early look at the series, the pointedly-titled “That Damn Michael Che” appears to feature scripted sketches and segments alongside Che’s commentary as a kind of sit-down comedic talking head.

Here’s the official description: “This groundbreaking new original comedy series uses sketches and vignettes to illustrate what it feels like to experience various every-day situations including racial profiling, unemployment, falling in love and more, from Michael’s perspective.”

The series will feature guest spots from “Saturday Night Live” cast members Cecily Strong, Heidi Gardner, Colin Quinn, Ellen Cleghorne and Colin Jost. Other notable guest stars include Omari Hardwick,...

Liam Neeson's The Marksman Dethrones Wonder Woman 1984 at the Weekend Box Office with $3.2M
Image
Liam Neeson's The Marksman takes the number one spot at this weekend's holiday box office after taking in $3.2 million. This is the third Neeson movie to open at number one for Open Road after October's Honest Thief and The Grey. The action thriller is directed by Robert Lorenz and follows a rancher and former Marine (Neeson) living in an Arizona border town who must help a young boy (Jacob Perez) escape a Mexican drug cartel. Katheryn Winnick, Juan Pablo Raba, and Teresa Ruiz also star.

As of this writing, over 60% of movie theaters in North America remain closed. Open Road President Tom Ortenberg says, "The Marksman has filled a void in the marketplace. It's mid-sized distributors like us that have been able to fill the void and serve the need," when discussing the current market for the theatrical experience. "There is a great thirst for product among consumers, and the opportunity is there.

Wonder Woman 1984 Wins Second Weekend at the Box Office with $5.5M, a 67% Drop from First Week
Image
Wonder Woman 1984 has won its second weekend at the box office after earning $5.5 million. The sequel fell 67% when compared to its debut last weekend. So far, the domestic total for the movie is $28.5 million, with a global total of $118.5 million. As of this writing, analysts don't believe that Wonder Woman 1984, which is also currently streaming on HBO Max for the next 21 days, will go past $40 million domestically.

Currently, 60% of movie theaters in North America remain closed. Many believe that Warner Bros. should have waited to release Wonder Woman 1984 later in 2021 to maximize profits. However, they rolled out the hybrid release method with the sequel, which they will attempt to replicate for the rest of their 2021 releases. The big screen news comes as HBO Max subscribers continue to reveal problems with the official stream, with many noting that it stops and stutters. Adding to problems are the mixed...

Peers Honoring Peers: What Makes SAG Awards Special
The 26th annual SAG Awards will be held Jan. 19 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and broadcast live on both TNT and TBS at 8 p.m. Est.

The SAG Awards are different from typical awards ceremonies for a number of reasons — beginning with length. The show, which comes in at two hours, is always the shortest of the major kudofests, as it only honors acting categories. However, it is one of the few to present awards in film, television and stunts.

The SAG Awards nominees and winners are also voted on entirely by their peers. The nominees are picked by separate film and TV committees, but the winners are voted on by the approximately 160,000 members of the SAG-aftra union. This spirit of camaraderie is celebrated in the opening “I Am an Actor” segment in which performers directly address the audience about how they became actors, about early jobs or what acting means to them.

‘Power’ Unveils Guest Stars For Final Episodes; 50 Cent Teases Spinoff Casting
Omari Hardwick in Power (2014)
Exclusive: Who shot Ghost may make up the final episodes of Power next year, but there’ll be some extra firepower joining the Omari Hardwick and Naturi Naughton led Starz drama too. Plus, there may be some casting twists for the Mary J Blige fronted spinoff courtesy of Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.

First of all, sharp eyes may have noticed Cedric the Entertainer briefly in the November 3 midseason finale strewn out on a warehouse floor after a shootout involving the Joseph Sikora portrayed Tommy Egan. The Barbershop alum’s name also popped up in the credits for the “No One Can Stop Me” episode penned by Power creator Courtney Kemp.

Well, Cedric will be joining the last five episodes of Power as part of an out of town underworld team with Brandon Micheal Hall, I’ve learned. A CBS reunion of sorts on premium cable with the God Friended Me star...

Billions Season 4 Episode 6 Review: Maximum Recreational Depth
One party recovers while the other unknowingly flounders on the latest episode of Billions.

This Billions review contains spoilers.

Billions Season 4 Episode 6

Jaws dropped when last week’s “A Proper Sendoff” saw Wendy Rhoades (Maggie Siff) respond to colleague turned rival Taylor Amber Mason’s (Asia Kate Dillon) initial attempt to offer consolation following her husband’s public revelations about their private life on Billions. It turns out that Bobby “Axe” Axelrod’s (Damian Lewis) seemingly ever-faithful lieutenant was more than willing to reach out to the enemy when the going got tough. So this would mean that Wendy’s phone call was a direct violation of the Axe Capital founder’s early season four declaration that none of his underlings were to associate with Mason and the other traitors under any circumstances, right?

Well, yes. When Axelrod’s spymaster Hall (Terry Kinney) informs him that Wendy and Mason were spotted together,...

(Future) Cult Classic: Cast and Everything to Know for Syfy Pilot
Joseph Baxter Mar 1, 2019

Syfy is putting a serial killer spin on teen movie tropes, with television pilot (Future) Cult Classic.

(Future) Cult Classic might be calling its own shot like Babe Ruth with its very title. However, the dark teen comedy pilot does bring some intriguing concepts to the table over at Syfy in an increasingly crowded small screen playing field.

Syfy ordered the pilot back in January along with cyberthriller Cipher. The series –an original concept, not adapted from a novel or comic book – is the brainchild of Shay Hatten, an up-and-coming talent whose first feature, crime thriller movie Ballerina, is still developing. The story is satirical in nature, set to manifest as a levity-laced genre pastiche of old-school slasher films and teen drama tropes, centered on Bree (Emily Alyn Lind), a ‘90s castaway living in a technology-teeming future.

(Future) Cult Classic Cast

The cast of (Future) Cult Classic just added two more,...

‘(Future) Cult Classic’: Justin Bartha & Geoffrey Owens Cast In Syfy Pilot
Justin Bartha
Justin Bartha (The Hangover) and Geoffrey Owens have joined the ensemble cast of Syfy’s dark comedy pilot (Future) Cult Classic from Shay Hatten (Ballerina), Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video and Universal Content Productions.

Written by Hatten, (Future) Cult Classic combines the genres of slasher films, high school drama and speculative satire. It is set 18 years in the future and centers on a group of teens whose community is rocked by a 1990s slasher-movie obsessed serial killer. Our heroes quickly realize they’re being targeted and decide to take matters into their own hands and track down the killer—before time runs out.

Bartha will play Jeff, Bree’s (Emily Alyn Lind) father who is a formerly successful true-crime novelist whose career has dried up now that murder has been virtually eradicated. What’s good for society has been bad for him and his family– and leaves him in a desperate...
