This time of year the WWE makes every effort they can to step up their performance. With Wrestlemania around the corner, they want to make sure as many eyes as possible are watching the Granddaddy of Them All. It’s also a time to reflect and honor the past as this is usually the time of year they start announcing the next WWE Hall of Fame class. Thanks to Bryan Alvarez from the Wrestling Observer, we may have some clue as to who will be a part of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2017. Pro wrestlers have been assigned outlandish characters for a very long time, and the creativity of promoters has known no bounds. Sometimes, it seems that everything has been done before, and yes, most characters wind up being variations on an established theme. But what about the truly bizarre, one-off characters that barely worked in the first place? Surely, they must have been horrid anomalies that happened only once, and stunk up the ring so badly that potential imitators would be forever deterred.
Well, not so much. This list compiles no less than 15 gimmicks so strange that they shouldn’t have happened once, yet somehow did, twice. In some cases, these bad ideas slipped through the cracks three or four times. I’ll try to provide some kind of historical context, but most of the time, nope, these were just hopelessly bad ideas that got pitched — and aproved — repeatedly,...

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that WWE officials have reached out to all talents, including those no longer wrestling but still affiliated with the company, and told them not to have any contact with Hulk Hogan after the racist comments scandal.
This new development arrives after Hogan recently went on a media tour in hope of clearing his name and getting back in Vince McMahon’s good books. The Hulkster still has a one-night appearance in the UK with former WWE talents Lanny Poffo, Jimmy Hart, Outback Jack, Bushwacker Luke and Fred Ottman (Tugboat) coming up, a number of which, still have connections to the company through the Hall of Fame amongst others.

Right now, if you were to google ‘terrible gimmicks wrestling’, your laptop would give you a sad look and start playing the piano melody from the end of the Incredible Hulk TV show. There have been so many articles on the subject over the years, with top tens, top twenties – top Fifties – that it’s almost like googling ‘breasts’: whatever you’re actually after, the results will not help you.

A lot of people have been talking about Benjamin Morris’ 538 piece, “Are Pro Wrestlers Dying at an Unusual Rate?”
Like Morris, I am neither an actuarial scientist nor a demographer. So, our interpretations of the data should be taken with a grain of salt. My results were somewhat different from Morris’ due to a difference data set and changes in how we calculated actuarial predictions.

I also used Social Security Actuarial Life Tables, but my “expected mortality rates” for the age groups were not the same as Morris’. For each wrestler, I calculated what their age would have been as of today. Then, based on gender, I looked up the number of lives (out of 100,000) that were expected to still be alive and converted that to a percentage. His analysis looked at wrestlers who were on 20+ WWF PPVs through 2002. I went with a...
