Either Brand New Day Includes a J. Jonah Jameson Moment From Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Trilogy or We Riot
Image
I have a big issue with how J. Jonah Jameson was portrayed in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The character was made a caricature of a conspiracy theory podcaster, the likes of which seem to have become popular in some circles, which feels like a clear case of character assassination.

Jameson has no love for Spider-Man, but the comics, and even the Sam Raimi films, have proven time and time again that you simply cannot mess with J. Jonah Jameson, who can in all certainty, give the likes of Lois Lane a run for her money when it comes to being a journalist. I believe Spider-Man: Brand New Day can redeem this, but it needs to make sure that it get’s right vibe.

The Boys: Homelander & Butcher are "two sides of the same coin"
Image
The villain telling the hero 'we’re not so different, you and I' is one of the most overused tropes in movies, especially when it comes to the superhero genre. Look no further than the Joker, Norman Osborne, Magneto, and Thanos — they've all said it.

The cliche stretches to Prime Video's subversive superhero series The Boys. Throughout the show's first four seasons, Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and Homelander (Antony Starr) have been at each other's throats, and season 5 will undoubtedly bring their war to a violent, gruesome conclusion.

The two characters are intrinsically different in terms of their outlooks. Homelander is an oppressive 'evil Superman' with ties to the government and plans for world domination. On the other hand, hardened British vigilante Billy Butcher has been out to stop him — and all 'Supes' — from the start, along with his ragtag group, the Boys.

On the surface, Butcher and Homelander are very different people,...

'Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man' Is Finally Swinging Toward Your Funko Pop Collection
Image
It's been a few months since Disney+ released the first season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, a retelling of Peter Parker's (Hudson Thames) origin story set in an alternate universe from the MCU. It was well-liked by fans and critics alike, and a second season has already greenlit. With that in mind, it was only a matter of time before Funko released a Pop! Vinyl collection featuring characters from this Marvel TV series.

Funko's latest Spider-Man set will include seven figures. In addition to the different Spidey suits featured in the show, like his Oscorp suit, proto suit, and final suit, other characters will receive the Pop! Vinyl treatments, including Doctor Strange (Robin Atkin Downes) and a 6-inch Symbiote (Alien Monster). Sadly, other characters like Norman Osborn (Colman Domingo) or any of Peter Parker's friends won't be featured in this set. The figures will reportedly be available for pre-order on April 30th on Amazon,...

Everything We Know About Thunderbolts*
Image
Marvel had a rough year in 2023. Many of its properties underperformed, and they lost their big villain due to Jonathan Majors being fired. Looking forward to their upcoming slate, comic fans have been excited about some of the studio’s projects over the next few years. Will these films help Marvel regain control? The upcoming Thunderbolts film has been one that fanboys have been hoping to see since the MCU started. With some recent news about the property coming up, it seems like the right time to break down what we know about the production.

Who Are The Thunderbolts?

The team first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1997 in an issue of The Incredible Hulk. They seemed to be a new group of superheroes that had arrived on the scene and gained acclaim very quickly. The reader was informed that the group was actually a group of supervillains led by Baron Zemo.

Colman Domingo Would Love to Bring Norman Osborn to MCU Live-Action Movie
Image
It looks like another actor is joining the ranks of those who have had the honor to play one of Spider-Man's most compelling and iconic villains. Coleman Domingo, star of A24's Sing Sing, plays Norman Osborne in the latest Marvel animated show, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man who, as fans of Spidey know, undergoes a tragic transformation into the menacing Green Goblin. While Norman is still just a wealthy business executive in the recently released animated show, Domingo recently went on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to talk about his booming career, mentioning the exciting future for his portrayal of Norman Osborn.

“I’m having a good time, I love the animation. I love the idea of playing Norman Osborn, and you’ll see his evolution into the Green Goblin in the coming seasons, which will be very cool."

That's right, part of the incredibly talented actor's wish is already coming true,...

While We Still Wait for Tobey Maguire’s Return, His Co-Star From the Og Spider-Man Movies Is in Talks to Bring Back His Supervillian: MCU Rumor
Image
Tobey Maguire’s return in Spider-Man: No Way Home took the world by storm and even led the film to make over a billion dollars at the box office, which was a miracle considering the global pandemic. Joining him were actors like Andrew Garfield, Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx, reprising their respective roles from the broader Spider-Man multiverse.

While Maguire’s return to the MCU is being speculated (and wished upon) by fans, an industry insider reported that the Og foe himself i.e. Willem Dafoe would return to the MCU as Norman Osborne a.k.a the Green Goblin. While it is not confirmed which film he will be seen in, the Nosferatu star is sure to be a formidable antagonist in the MCU.

Is ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ MCU Canon?
Image
Spider-Man has been one of the biggest superhero names for decades, and his newest Disney+ series shows his heroic start at the beginning of high school. The animated series has him facing some of his most iconic villains from the comic books and teaming up with other Marvel heroes. It's different from what viewers have seen of Spider-Man in the MCU, but it shows a Peter Parker who's young enough for these events to maybe have taken place before the MCU films. However, there is a solid answer to whether or not Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man takes place in the MCU.

Colman Domingo Addresses MCU Casting Rumors, Denies Talks To Replace Jonathan Majors
Image
The rumors were true... kind of: Colman Domingo was, at one point, in talks to join the MCU. However, the rumors of Domingo taking over for Jonathan Majors as the powerful villain Kang might not be as accurate as you thought.

After appearances in Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Majors was set to be the McU's next big bad. Even though the Ant-Man sequel made Kang into a laughingstock, the MCU was still looking to establish the villain as an Avengers-level threat. When Majors was convicted of assaulting and harassing his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, Disney cut ties with the actor. This prompted a wave of speculation about how Marvel might move forward without Majors, and rumors began circulating that the studio was looking to recast Kang, possibly with Colman Domingo.

A flawed classic: Marvel's Spider-Man prequel rewrites the Wall-Crawler
Image
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is the newest Marvel series on Disney+, and it serves as the set-up for the McU's variant of the classic character. While there are several ties to the incarnation brought to us by Tom Holland, there are still enough familiar features and callbacks to the classic comics.

That being said, this new take on Peter Parker's origin story adds and subtracts new things to the established Spider-Man mythos that set up events that we will undoubtedly see in future films, but it also cuts away key components to Marvel's poster boy.

Warning: Spoilers for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man beyond this point!

A swing or a miss?

Let's get the obvious out of the way. Those expecting a modernized version of Spidey's origin story will only get a slice of a pie that's been dished out before. Remember, this isn't Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield's version,...

Here’s How ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ Fits Into the MCU Canon
Image
“Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” brings another iteration of the iconic comic book web-slinger to the screen. Spidey’s been swinging through the Marvel Cinematic Universe for nearly a decade and now, nine years after he made his debut in “Captain America: Civil War,” audience are getting a new story set in that same time period. Kind of.

Thanks to shifting creative priorities at the studios and behind-the-scenes corporate deals, Spider-Man has always had one of the more complicated cinematic canons as an oft-rebooted franchise header who’s also one of the only Marvel Cinematic Universe characters owned by another studio. Then the multiverse hit the MCU and “Spider-Man: Far From Home” blew open the canon even further, putting Toby McGuire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men in play right alongside current franchise star Tom Holland.

Now, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” enters the fray after its own canon-confusing creative journey, so if...

“J. Jonah Jameson must be smoking d**k”: Charlie Cox’s Daredevil: Born Again Can Address a Crucial Daily Bugle-Spider-Man Theory That Began With ‘No Way Home’
Image
Charlie Cox’s Matthew Murdock has proven a lot of things in his tenure in the Daredevil Netflix show, and one of them is the fact that J. Jonah Jameson is a scam artist and a fraud. While the character has been labeling Spider-Man a menace for the latter’s entire career, New York has had its fair share of brutal vigilantes that mothers told their children about to keep them on the straight and narrow, be it Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Moon Knight, or Daredevil.

While Spider-Man gets a bad rep from J. Jonah Jameson, there are heroes like Daredevil that are categorically more dangerous, the kind that criminals wish they never meet, opting to take their chances with the likes of Spider-Man, who is leagues stronger than most street-level vigilantes.

Daredevil merits a lot more scrutiny from the likes of J. Jonah Jameson Tom Holland...

“How are you different?”: Beau DeMayo Hates Marvel Turning White Characters Black, Forgets He Did the Same in X-Men ‘97
Image
Screenwriter Beau DeMayo is best known for his work on X-Men ‘97, which he created and wrote before he was fired from his role. The writer has been quite active on social media, revealing trivia about the making of the series and his intentions with certain characters, while he has also been vocal about his opinion on various other media.

He recently criticized Marvel for race-swapping traditionally white characters in the comics to Black actors in the film. He took the example of characters Electro, High Evolutionary, and Kang for his statement. However, fans called out his hypocrisy, pointing out how he chose actor Gui Augustini, a white actor to voice Sunspot, a canonically Afro-Brazilian character.

Thor 5's Darkest Story Setup Just Became A Dangerous Reality In The MCU
Image
The release of The Marvels has set up multiple upcoming MCU movies, including Thor 5, which could be the darkest Thor story yet. The events of the Siege run of comics provide a solid foundation for a war on New Asgard in Thor 5, with the Skrulls now inhabiting New Asgard - both of whom could come under fire based on President Ritson's statements against "off-world species". Thor 5 could potentially fix the biggest criticism of Thor: Love and Thunder by shifting the tone to a darker and more serious story, potentially involving an all-out war that roughly adapts the Siege storyline.

With the recent release of The Marvels comes a potentially dangerous story setup for the upcoming Thor 5, and it might be the darkest Thor story the MCU could tell. The MCU has a habit of setting up plots for other movies in its connected cinematic universe, and it looks like The...

10 Grossest Superhero Origins in Marvel History
Image
The Marvel Universe is filled with iconic heroes whose origin stories inspire, delight, and amaze. However, not all Marvel superheroes are so lucky, with many having incredibly horrific, disturbing, and downright disgusting origins that started them on their path to heroism. For every Ant-Man, inspired to become the minuscule hero after discovering Pym Particles, there is a Mettle, whose flesh was ripped from his body by Norman Osborne to create a super-powered being the villain could control.

From the classic 1940s hero The Whizzer to the Spider-Verse variant of Peter Parker called Spiders-Man, there are countless examples of Marvel characters whose gross origins have shaped them into the heroes they are today. Enjoy this list of some of Marvel's most disgusting superhero origins, ranging from the horrible manifestation of acidic vomit to the discovery of sentient slugs living in a young boy's stomach.

Theory: Marvel Already Set Up How Kamala Khan is Going to Return (With Her MCU Powers)
Image
Warning - Spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man (2022) #26 ahead! The death of Kamala Khan is one of the most controversial decisions plaguing the already-controversial The Amazing Spider-Man (2022) run, but there is reason to believe that this entire gambit is actually a way to change Ms. Marvel's powers in the comics in order to better match her depiction in the MCU. Rabin, the villain who has recently been terrorizing Spider-Man, has strange powers that seem to warp reality; the theory that follows is that Rabin was designed this way in order to explain why, when Kamala Khan inevitably returns, she will do so with markedly different powers and abilities.

Zeb Wells, John Romita Jr., Scott Hana, Marcio Menyz, and Erick Arciniega's The Amazing Spider-Man (2022) #26, "One Shall Fall!" makes good on the promise of its title. When the villainous Emissary aka Rabin returns in a whirlwind to menace Mary Jane Watson (whom he believes...

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Trailer Raises Questions About Venom’s Identity
Image
The 2023 PlayStation Showcase was a bit of a disappointment. Sure, plenty of our predictions came true, but the whole event was a very “meh” affair. Quite frankly, the most exciting part of the showcase was the final game, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and that’s mostly because its trailer showcased some actual gameplay. Despite the many new things we learned about the sequel in that trailer, though, it raised some new questions regarding Venom’s identity in the game.

Sony ended the PlayStation Showcase with a marvelous bang, pun definitely intended, by treating audiences to 12 uninterrupted minutes of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 footage. The video teased Kraven the Hunter as the main villain, a potentially larger world to explore that expands past Manhattan, and, most importantly of all, a Symbiote-infected Peter Parker. And where there’s a Black Suit Spider-Man, Venom isn’t far behind. But that raises an important...

‘Beetlejuice 2’: Willem Dafoe Joins Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton
Image
Willem Dafoe is the latest bold-faced name to join the cast of Beetlejuice 2.

The Warner Bros. feature began production this week with Tim Burton, who directed the original movie that was released in 1988, back in the director’s chair.

Jenna Ortega is leading the cast, with Michael Keaton reprising his role as the obnoxious ghost, while Winona Ryder is also back, playing Ortega’s mother. Catherine O’Hara is also among the returnees, while Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci are among the newcomers.

While plot details are being kept six feet under, it is understood that Dafoe is playing a law enforcement officer in the afterlife.

Warners announced Tuesday that the feature will be released Sept. 6, 2024, taking over the date from Marvel’s Blade, which last week shut down preproduction due to the writers strike.

Producing Beetlejuice 2 are Burton and Brad Pitt’s Plan B, among others. Al Gough and Miles Millar,...

10 Action Movies Where The Hero Isn't Who Kills The Villain
Image
While action movies are typically about the protagonist overcoming the antagonist, these ten action movies actually have someone besides the hero kill the villain. Oftentimes conflicts between action movie heroes and action movie villains end in one of two ways. Either the hero decides to kill the villain, or the hero lets the villain live in an attempt to be the bigger person. Having someone else kill the villain is an interesting bit of subversion, and these ten movies are well-known for taking that third option.

Villain deaths in action movies are often one of the most iconic parts of their respective films. Die Hard, Kill Bill, and all of the John Wick movies create antagonists so hateable that audiences want to see them put down, and then they do so in a spectacular way. Other times, the villain gets away, allowing for these antagonists to return in sequels. However,...

'People Will Be Upset': Spider-Man Writer Teases Most Shocking Twist in 50 Years
Image
During his recent tenure on Marvel’s flagship title, The Amazing Spider-Man, writer Zeb Wells has been responsible for a massive overhaul on the title, but, according to the prolific comics and television writer, the most dramatic change is yet to come. Speaking in an interview concerning his philosophy and intended direction for the title, Wells opined that his plans might prove controversial with the fandom. And coming off his current run, that is saying something.

Wells received the title of Amazing Spider-Man, complete with a relaunch, in 2022 following the exit of longtime scribe Nick Spencer at the end of his critically-panned run in 2021. Between Spencer and Wells' runs was a brief period where the title was governed by a conclave of writers in a brief, if not indelibly satirical run known as the “Beyond” era in which Peter Parker was replaced by his clone, Ben Reilly. Wells’ current tenure,...

1 Spider-Man Feat Is Based on a Real-Life Muhammad Ali Accomplishment
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Gold Goblin #5!While Spider-Man has pulled off some pretty creative and innovative things, he may have one of the greatest boxers to thank for one particular feat. A match between Peter Parker and Queen Goblin apparently took inspiration from heavyweight champion, Muhammad Ali.

In Gold Goblin #5 by Christopher Cantwell and Lan Medina, Norman Osborne in his Golden Goblin persona, along with Spider-Man, confront Ashley Kafka, aka the Queen Goblin. After triggering her transformation in public, the two begin to fight with the villain, with Peter doing his best to stoke aggravation in his foe. Queen Goblin strikes, but can't seem to hit Spider-Man.

I really love how this page turned out. What makes it even more fun is that Lan and I based it off Muhammad Ali famously dodging 21 punches in 10 seconds. https://t.co/dYHTtAJXa7 https://t.co/WETpOMEtQ9 — Christopher Cantwell (@ifyoucantwell) March 20, 2023

‘That’s a great role’: Willem Dafoe says he would reprise Spider-Man villain again
Image
Willem Dafoe has said he would gladly return to the role of Green Goblin, in another Spider-Man sequel.

The actor first played the Marvel Comics villain, whose real name is Norman Osborne, in Sam Raimi’s 2002 blockbuster Spider-Man.

He would later reprise the part briefly in Raimi’s two sequels, before making his full return as the character in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Speaking to Inverse, Dafoe described Norman Osborne as a “great role”, insisting that he could be coaxed back to the character “if everything was right”.

“I liked the fact that it’s a double role both times,” he said. “Twenty years ago, and fairly recently, both times [were] very different experiences, but I had a good time on both.”

Dafoe isn’t the only Spider-Man star to express an interest in returning to the universe.

Loki's Daughter Proves The God of Mischief Is More Powerful Than Thor
Image
The powerful "Asgardian" sorceress Sylvie Lushton - introduced in Dark Reign: Young Avengers - was revealed to be empowered and theoretically brought to life by the then-villainous Loki, proving just how much more powerful Loki is than their brother Thor.

Thor and Loki are epically powerful gods from the Norse-inspired realm of Asgard, both powered by humanity's belief in them, but it is often shown that the God of Thunder Thor is much more "powerful" than his sibling Loki. However, Loki's anti-heroic era of the past few years has consistently underplayed their incredible magical might. Loki literally creating life - in the form of "daughter" Sylvie Lushton aka the second Enchantress - just to mess with the Avengers, easily shows that while they might not be a powerful fighter, they are certainly more cosmically strong than their brother Thor Odinson.

A Shock MCU Hero Demolished the Real-World Meaning of Punisher's Logo
Image
The Punisher’s infamous skull logo has been a subject of much controversy over the last few years, but Hawkeye Kate Bishop called out the hypocrisy of those who would use it in the name of “justice” more than a decade ago in the pages of Marvel Comics.

After the Punisher’s skull logo was appropriated by several far-right extremists, Marvel made the controversial decision to replace it in the latest revamp of the character. The new storyline sees Frank Castle becoming the leader of the villainous Hand ninja clan, trading his guns in for a pair of katana and replacing the Punisher's classic skull logo with a new insignia that gives the skull an oni-like appearance with fangs and horns. Marvel feeling the need to rethink the whole ethos behind one of its characters shows just how serious the situation is in the real world, to the extent that...

Toy Sales Took Control Of Spider-Man: The Animated Series' Season 1 Story
Image
These days, Spider-Man is as ubiquitous as the Marvel Cinematic Universe of which he's a part. In recent years the character has come to fully realize his potential as an everyman hero by literally appearing as a multitude of varied characters across different forms of media. From Miles Morales to the many different incarnations of Peter Parker to emerge from the multiverse, Spider-Man has truly come into his own in the 21st century.

But back when I was a kid, there was nothing like the bevy of Spidey products on offer today. In fact, if you weren't reading the comics, there wasn't really much to delve into in the early '90s. Sam Raimi was yet to make his seminal movie saga, and James Cameron couldn't get his vision for the character off the ground after Carolco, the studio behind his action classic "Terminator 2," bought the rights and then went bust.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Concept Art Reveals Alternate Aunt May Death
Image
Though already a heartbreaking moment, new Spider-Man: No Way Home concept art reveals an alternate version of Aunt May's death. The third installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise saw Tom Holland's Peter Parker breaking the doors of the multiverse open with the help of Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange in the hopes of restoring his secret identity after being exposed by Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio in the previous film. Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Holland pitted against a variety of villains, namely Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, who delivered one of the biggest blows to the young webslinger near the halfway point of the film.

Just over a year after the multiverse epic first hit theaters, artist Phil Langone has taken to Instagram to share new Spider-Man: No Way Home concept art.

Marvel's New Gold Goblin Is Tony Stark's Legacy (Not Peter Parker)

Warning: Spoilers for Gold Goblin #3The Gold Goblin is Norman Osborn's newest identity, and while the former villain is most closely associated with Spider-Man, his new role is undoubtedly influenced by his time in the Iron Man armor.

Norman Osborn has had a tumultuous few years in the Marvel Universe. His sins were essentially removed from him by the Sin Eater in Nick Spencer's recent run on The Amazing Spider-Man. Afterwards, he decided to turn his life around and try to be a force for good instead of evil. He has even hired Peter Parker to work at his company and helped build Peter a brand-new Spider-Man suit. This is in addition to trying to reconcile with the Hobgoblin Roderick Kingsley and forming a relationship with his grandson and the boy's mother.

10 Most Bizarre Moments In Comics, According To Reddit
Image
Phase 4 of the MCU has wrapped up with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as the seventh film in the first part of the "Multiverse Saga". From reviews and audience reactions, Phase 4 has done much more poorly than the studios were probably hoping. One explanation for this is that the MCU simply used up its more standard storylines and characters for the first three phases and are left with the weird parts of Marvel Comics.

DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, and many other comic publishers have plenty of weird and strange moments throughout their, generally standard runs. Comics can get weird when creators get total control with no oversight or decide to write a well-known character with mature audiences in mind. The medium has a knack for shocking fans with strange and weird moments that Redditors have been discussing and cringing at for years.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Would Be Right To Ignore The Most Iconic Venom
Image
Thanks to the teaser in the first game’s ending, many fans are excited about the debut of Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, but the sequel should ignore the most iconic Venom symbiote host, Eddie Brock, and capitalize on the character development of Harry Osborn. The ending of Marvel’s Spider-Man hinted at Harry’s transformation into Venom. Disgraced former New York City mayor Norman Osborn visited his son in a stasis pod and witnessed movement from the goo within that many interpreted as foreshadowing a new version of the Venom symbiote.

In the comics many Spider-Man supporting characters have taken on the identity of Venom over the years by merging with the symbiotic alien. Spider-Man’s high school bully turned war hero, Flash Thompson, was a Venom host who dubbed himself Agent Venom. Mac Gargan, alias of the villain Scorpion, became a scorpion-themed Venom. The actor who played...
